We present Very Large Array (VLA) high resolution observations of the NH3(1,1) and NH3(2,2) molecular transitions towards the high mass star forming region AFGL 437. Our aim was to investigate if the poorly collimated CO molecular outflow previously detected in the region is the result of a projection effect, with no intrinsic bipolarity, as suggested by Gomez et al. We complemented our observations with radio continuum archived data from the VLA at 2 and 3.6 cm, and with unpublished public data at 450 μm taken with Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Ammonia emission was found mainly in three clumps located at the south and east of the position of the compact infrared cluster of AFGL 437, where the CO outflow seemed to have its origin. One of the NH3(1,1) clumps coincides with the maximum of NH3(2,2) and with a local peak of emission at 450 μm. A near infrared source (s11) is also found at that position. Our continuum map at 2 cm shows extended elongated emission associated with the infrared source AFGL 437W. This elongated morphology and its spectral index between 3.6 and 2 cm (\simeq 0.4) suggest the presence of a jet in AFGL 437W. We suggest that several molecular bipolar outflows may exist in the region. The observed CO outflow would be the superposition of those individual outflows, which would explain its low degree of collimation observed at larger scales.
We report on a detailed study of the water maser kinematics and radio continuum emission toward the most massive and young object in the star-forming region AFGL 2591. Our analysis shows at least two spatial scales of multiple star formation, one projected across 0.1 pc on the sky and another one at about 2000 AU from a ZAMS star of about 38 Solar masses. This young stellar object drives a powerful jet- and wind-driven outflow system with the water masers associated to the outflow walls, previously detected as a limb-brightened cavity in the NIR band. At about 1300 AU to the north of this obje…
Water is a sensitive tracer of physical conditions in star-forming regions because of its large abundance variations between hot and cold regions. We use spectrally resolved observations of rotational lines of H$_2$O and its isotopologs with Herschel/HIFI to constrain the physical conditions of the water emitting region toward the high-mass protostar AFGL2591. We use analytical estimates and rotation diagrams to estimate T$_{ex}$ and column densities of H$_2$O of the envelope, the outflow, and a foreground cloud. Furthermore, we use the non-LTE radiative transfer code to estimate the temperatu…
Most bipolar outflows are associated with individual young stellar objects and have small opening angles. Here we report the discovery of an extremely wide-angle ($\sim$180$\arcdeg$) bipolar outflow ("EWBO") in a cluster forming region AFGL 5142 from low-velocity emission of the HCN (3-2) and HCO$^{+}$ (3-2) lines. This bipolar outflow is along a north-west to south-east direction with a line-of-sight flow velocity of about 3 km~s$^{-1}$ and is spatially connected to the high-velocity jet-like outflows. It seems to be a collection of low-velocity material entrained by the high-velocity outflow…
We present multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) H$_2$O maser observations toward the massive young stellar objects (YSOs) VLA 2 and VLA 3 in the star-forming region AFGL 2591. Through these observations, we have extended the study of the evolution of the masers towards these objects up to a time span of $\sim$ 10 yrs, measuring their radial velocities and proper motions. The H$_2$O masers in VLA 3, the most massive YSO in AFGL 2591 ($\sim$ 30--40~M$_{\odot}$), are grouped within projected distances of $\lesssim$ 40 mas ($\lesssim$ 130 AU) from VLA 3. In contrast to other H$_2$O masers i…
Observations with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer in the most extended configuration toward two intermediate-mass star-forming regions, IRAS22198+6336 and AFGL5142, reveal the presence of several complex organic molecules at ~500 AU scales, confirming the presence of hot cores in both regions. The hot cores are not rich in CN-bearing molecules, as often seen in massive hot cores, and are mainly traced by CH3CH2OH, (CH2OH)2, CH3COCH3, and CH3OH, with additionally CH3CHO, CH3OD and HCOOD for IRAS22198+6336, and C6H, and O13CS for AFGL5142. The emission of complex molecules is resolved down to…
We present arcsecond resolution mid-infrared and millimeter observations of the center of the young stellar cluster AFGL961 in the Rosette molecular cloud. Within 0.2 pc of each other, we find an early B star embedded in a dense core, a neighboring star of similar luminosity with no millimeter counterpart, a protostar that has cleared out a cavity in the circumcluster envelope, and two massive, dense cores with no infrared counterparts. An outflow emanates from one of these cores, indicating a deeply embedded protostar, but the other is starless, bound, and appears to be collapsing. The divers…
We have studied the dust density, temperature and velocity distributions of the archetypal massive young stellar object (MYSO) AFGL 2591. Given its high luminosity ($L=2 \times 10^5$ L$_\odot$) and distance ($d=3.3$ kpc), AFGL 2591 has one of the highest $\sqrt{L}/d$ ratio, giving better resolved dust emission than any other MYSO. As such, this paper provides a template on how to use resolved multi-wavelength data and radiative transfer to obtain a well-constrained 2-D axi-symmetric analytic rotating infall model. We show for the first time that the resolved dust continuum emission from Hersch…
We aim to reveal the gas energetics in the circumstellar environment of the prototypical high-mass protostellar object AFGL2591 using space-based far-infrared observations of linear rotor molecules. Rotational spectral line signatures of CO, HCO+, CS, HCN and HNC from a 490-1240 GHz survey with Herschel/HIFI, complemented by ground-based JCMT and IRAM 30m spectra, cover transitions with E(up)/k between 5 and ~300 K (750K for 12C16O, using selected frequency settings up to 1850 GHz). The resolved spectral line profiles are used to separate and study various kinematic components. The line profil…
We present the results of multi-epoch VLBI observations of water masers in the AGFL 5142 massive star forming region. We measure an annual parallax of $π=0.467 \pm 0.010$ mas, corresponding to a source distance of $D=2.14^{+0.051}_{-0.049}$ kpc. Proper motion and line of sight velocities reveal the 3D kinematics of masers in this region, most of which associate with millimeter sources from the literature. In particular we find remarkable bipolar bowshocks expanding from the most massive member, AFGL 5142 MM1, which are used to investigate the physical properties of its protostellar jet. We att…
We present {\it Spitzer} IRAC mid-infrared photometry on the massive star forming region AFGL 437 (IRAS 03035+5819). From the IRAC colour-colour diagram, we identify several new embedded YSOs within 64 arcsec of the central compact cluster. Using the IRAC ratio images, we investigate the molecular outflows associated with the highly embedded young stellar object WK34 in the central cluster. We attribute the lobes seen (extended to $\sim$ 0.16 pc in the north) in the ratio map to shocked molecular hydrogen emission. IRAC images reveal a large diffuse nebulosity associated with the central clust…
Increasing evidence suggests that, similar to their low-mass counterparts, high-mass stars form through a disk-mediated accretion process. At the same time, formation of high-mass stars still necessitates high accretion rates, and hence, high gas densities, which in turn can cause disks to become unstable against gravitational fragmentation. We study the kinematics and fragmentation of the disk around the high-mass star forming region AFGL 2591-VLA 3 which was hypothesized to be fragmenting based on the observations that show multiple outflow directions. We use a new set of high-resolution (0.…
Massive young stellar objects (YSOs), like low-mass YSOs, are thought to be surrounded by optically thick envelopes and/or discs and are observed to have associated regions that produce polarized light at near-infrared wavelengths. These polarized regions are thought to be lower-density outflows along the polar axes of the YSO envelopes. Using the 0.2 arcsec spatial resolution of the Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer on the Hubble Space Telescope we are examining the structure of the envelopes and outflow regions of massive YSOs in star-forming regions within a few kpc of the …
[Context] Recent detections of disks around young high-mass stars support the idea of massive star formation through accretion rather than coalescence, but the detailed kinematics in the equatorial region of the disk candidates is not well known, which limits our understanding of the accretion process. [Aims] This paper explores the kinematics of the gas around a young massive star with millimeter-wave interferometry to improve our understanding of the formation of massive stars though accretion. [Methods] We use Plateau de Bure interferometric images to probe the environment of the nearby (~1…
This paper aims to investigate the hypothesis that the embedded luminous star AFGL2591-VLA3 (2.3E5Lsun at 3.33kpc) is forming according to a scaled-up version of a low-mass star formation scenario. We present multi-configuration VLA 3.6cm and 7mm, as well as CARMA C18O and 3mm continuum observations to investigate the morphology and kinematics of the ionized gas, dust, and molecular gas around AFGL2591. We also compare our results to ancillary near-IR images, and model the SED and 2MASS image profiles of AFGL2591 using a dust continuum radiative transfer code. The observed 3.6cm images uncover…
We have performed a 5-8 $μ$m spectral line survey of the hot molecular core associated with the massive protostar AFGL 2591, using the Echelon-Cross-Echelle Spectrograph (EXES) on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). We have supplemented these data with a ground based study in the atmospheric M band around 4.5 $μ$m using the iSHELL instrument on the Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), and the full N band window from 8-13 $μ$m using the Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph (TEXES) on the IRTF. Here we present the first detection of ro-vibrational transitions of CS i…
We present 1.3mm Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations at $\sim$3$^{\prime\prime}$ resolution towards the brightest section of the intermediate/massive star forming cluster NGC 2264-C. The millimetre continuum emission reveals ten 1.3mm continuum peaks, of which four are new detections. The observed frequency range includes the known molecular jet/outflow tracer SiO (5-4), thus providing the first high resolution observations of SiO towards NGC 2264-C. We also detect molecular lines of twelve additional species towards this region, including CH$_3$CN, CH$_3$OH, SO, H$_2$CO, DCN, HC$_3$N, and …
Hydrogen fluoride has been established to be an excellent tracer of molecular hydrogen in diffuse clouds. In denser environments, however, the HF abundance has been shown to be approximately two orders of magnitude lower. We present Herschel/HIFI observations of HF J=1-0 toward two high-mass star formation sites, NGC6334 I and AFGL 2591. In NGC6334 I the HF line is seen in absorption in foreground clouds and the source itself, while in AFGL 2591 HF is partially in emission. We find an HF abundance with respect to H2 of 1.5e-8 in the diffuse foreground clouds, whereas in the denser parts of NGC…
Observational signatures of infalling envelopes and outflowing material in early stages of protostellar evolution, and at small radii from the protostar, are essential to progress in the understanding of the mass-accretion process in star formation. In this letter, we report a detailed study of the accretion and outflow structure around a protostar in the well-known high-mass star-forming region AFGL 5142. We focus on the mm source MM-1, which exhibits hot-core chemistry, radio continuum emission, and strong water and methanol masers. Remarkably, our Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) ob…
We present a detailed analysis of the disk and circumstellar environment of the forming O-type star AFGL 4176 mm1, placing results from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) into context with multiwavelength data. With ALMA, we detect seventeen 1.2 mm continuum sources within 5$''$ (21,000 au) of AFGL 4176 mm1. We find that mm1 has a spectral index of 3.4$\pm$0.2 across the ALMA band, with $>$87% of its 1.2 mm continuum emission from dust. The source mm2, projected 4200 au from mm1, may be a companion or a blueshifted knot in a jet. We also explore the morphological differenc…
We present Submillimter Array 1.3 mm waveband continuum and molecular line observations of the HH 80-81 high-mass star-forming region. The dust continuum emission reveals two dominant peaks MM1 and MM2, and line emission from high-density tracers suggests the presence of another core MC. Molecular line emission from MM1, which harbors the exciting source of the HH 80-81 radio jet, yields a hot molecular core at a gas temperature of 110 K. The two younger cores MM2 and MC both appear to power collimated CO outflows. In particular, the outflow arising from MM2 exhibits a jet-like morphology and …
We present high angular resolution, high sensitivity 8.46 GHz (3.6 cm) radio continuum observations made toward the core of the HH~92 outflow with the Very Large Array in 2002-2003 and with the Expanded Very Large Array in 2011. We detect a group of three compact sources distributed in a region 2$''$ in extension and discuss their nature. We conclude that one of the objects (VLA 1) is the exciting source of the giant outflow associated with HH~92. In the case of HH~34 we present new 43.3 GHz (7 mm) observations that reveal the presence of a structure associated with the exciting source and elo…
The giant Herbig-Haro object 222 extends over $\sim$6$'$ in the plane of the sky, with a bow shock morphology. The identification of its exciting source has remained uncertain over the years. A non-thermal radio source located at the core of the shock structure was proposed to be the exciting source. However, Very Large Array studies showed that the radio source has a clear morphology of radio galaxy and a lack of flux variations or proper motions, favoring an extragalactic origin. Recently, an optical-IR study proposed that this giant HH object is driven by the multiple stellar system V380 Or…
With the recent recognition of a second, distinctive class of molecular outflows, namely the explosive ones not directly connected to the accretion-ejection process in the star formation, a juxtaposition of the morphological and kinematic properties of both classes is warranted. By applying the same method used in Zapata et al. (2009), and using $^{12}$CO(J=2-1) archival data from the Submillimeter Array (SMA), we contrast two well known explosive objects, Orion KL and DR21, to HH211 and DG Tau B, two flows representative of classical low-mass protostellar outflows. At the moment there are onl…
Breaking the Blend: A multi-tracer kinematic decomposition method for IFS data applied to disentangling the AGN outflow and circumnuclear ring in NGC 5728 with JWST
We present several molecular line emission arcsec and subarcsec observations obtained with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) in the direction of the massive protostar IRAS 18162-2048, the exciting source of HH 80-81. The data clearly indicates the presence of a compact (radius~425-850 AU) SO2 structure, enveloping the more compact (radius~150 AU) 1.4 millimeter dust emission (reported in a previous paper). The emission spatially coincides with the position of the prominent thermal radio jet which terminates at the HH 80-81 and HH 80N Herbig-Haro objects. Furthermore, the molecular emission is elon…
The cosmic abundance of hydrides depends critically on high-energy UV, X-ray, and particle irradiation. Here we study hydrides in star-forming regions where irradiation by the young stellar object can be substantial, and density and temperature can be much enhanced over interstellar values. Lines of OH, CH, NH, SH and their ions OH+, CH+, NH+, SH+, H2O+, and H3O+ were observed in star-forming regions by the HIFI spectrometer onboard the Herschel Space Observatory. Molecular column densities are derived from observed ground-state lines, models, or rotational diagrams. We report here on two prot…
Galaxy-scale outflows of gas, or galactic winds (GWs), driven by energy from star formation are a pivotal mechanism for regulation of star formation in the current model of galaxy evolution. Observations of this phenomenon have proliferated through the wide application of old techniques on large samples of galaxies, the development of new methods, and advances in telescopes and instrumentation. I review the diverse portfolio of direct observations of stellar GWs since 2010. Maturing measurements of the ionized and neutral gas properties of nearby winds have been joined by exciting new probes o…
We present a multi-wavelength study of two HH objects (137 and 138) that may be associated. We use Gemini H$_2$ (2.12 $μ$m) and K (2.2 $μ$m) images, as well as APEX molecular line observations and Spitzer image archives. Several H$_2$ knots, linked to the optical chain of knots of HH 137, are identified in the Gemini and Spitzer 4.5 $μ$m images. New shock excited regions related to the optical knots delineating HH 138 are also reported. In addition, a bright 4.5 $μ$m 0.09 pc-long arc-shaped structure, roughly located mid-way between HH 137 and HH 138, is found to be associated with two Spitzer…
At the interface of HII regions and molecular gas peculiar structures appear, some of them with pillar-like shapes. Understanding their origin is important for characterizing triggered star formation and the impact of massive stars on the interstellar medium. In order to study the molecular environment and the influence of the radiation on two pillar-like features related to the HII region G46.5-0.2, we performed molecular line observations with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment, and spectroscopic optical observations with the Isaac Newton Telescope. From the optical observations …
We present images for the 3.5 mm continuum and HCN(J=1-0) hyperfine line emission from the surroundings of the HII regions G75.78+0.34 and G75.77+0.34 obtained with the Berkeley Illinois Maryland Association (BIMA) interferometer using the D configuration at a spatial resolution of 18 arcsec and spectral sampling of 0.34 km/s. The continuum emission of both objects is dominated by free-free emission from the ionized gas surrounding the exciting stars. Dust emission may contribute only a small fraction of the 3.5 mm continuum from G75.78+0.34 and is negligible for G75.77+0.34. The high spectral…
We observed Brackett $α$ 4.05$μ$m emission towards the supernebula in NGC 5253 with NIRSPEC on Keck II in adaptive optics mode, NIRSPAO, to probe feedback from its exciting embedded super star cluster (SSC). NIRSPEC's Slit-Viewing Camera was simultaneously used to image the K-band continuum at $\sim$$0.1''$ resolution. We register the IR continuum with HST imaging, and find that the visible clusters are offset from the K-band peak, which coincides with the Br $α$ peak of the supernebula and its associated molecular cloud. The spectra of the supernebula exhibit Br $α$ emission with a strong, na…
Using APEX-1 and APEX-2 observations, we have detected and studied the rotational lines of the HC$_3$N molecule (cyanoacetylene) in the powerful outflow/hot molecular core G331.512-0.103. We identified thirty-one rotational lines at $J$ levels between 24 and 39; seventeen of them in the ground vibrational state $v$=0 (9 lines corresponding to the main C isotopologue and 8 lines corresponding to the $^{13}$C isotopologues), and fourteen in the lowest vibrationally excited state $v_7$=1. Using LTE-based population diagrams for the beam-diluted $v$=0 transitions, we determined $T_{\rm exc}$=85$\p…
The HH80-81 system is one of the most powerful jets driven by a massive protostar. We present new near-infrared (NIR) line imaging observations of the HH80-81 jet in the H$_2$ (2.122 $μ$m) and [Fe II] (1.644 $μ$m) lines. These lines trace not only the jet close to the exciting source but also the knots located farther away. We have detected nine groups of knot-like structures in the jet including HH80 and HH81 spaced $0.2-0.9$ pc apart. The knots in the northern arm of the jet show only [Fe II] emission closer to the exciting source, a combination of [Fe II] and H$_2$ at intermediate distances…
We present global VLBI observations of the first-excited state OH masers in the massive star-forming region Onsala 1 (ON 1). The 29 masers detected are nearly all from the 6035 MHz transition, and nearly all are identifiable as Zeeman pair components. The 6030 and 6035 MHz masers are coincident with previously published positions of ground-state masers to within a few milliarcseconds, and the magnetic fields deduced from Zeeman splitting are comparable. The 6.0 GHz masers in ON 1 are always found in close spatial association with 1665 MHz OH masers, in contrast to the situation in the massive …
To understand how Phosphorus-bearing molecules are formed in star-forming regions, we have analysed ALMA observations of PN and PO towards the massive star-forming region AFGL 5142, combined with a new analysis of the data of the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko taken with the ROSINA instrument onboard Rosetta. The ALMA maps show that the emission of PN and PO arises from several spots associated with low-velocity gas with narrow linewidths in the cavity walls of a bipolar outflow. PO is more abundant than PN in most of the spots, with the PO/PN ratio increasing as a function of the distance to…
The majority of low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs) harbor supermassive black holes with very low accretion rates. However, the accretion flows do not produce enough ionizing photons to power the emission lines emitted on scales of ~100 pc, and therefore additional sources of power are required. We present and analyze Hubble Space Telescope spectra of three nearby luminous LINERs that are spatially resolved on scales of < 9 pc. The targets have multiple indicators of an accreting black hole, as well as a deficient ionizing photon budget. We measure diagnostic emission line ra…
Ever deeper and wider lookback surveys have led to a fairly robust outline of the cosmic star formation history, which culminated around z~2 -- a period often nicknamed "cosmic noon." Our knowledge about star-forming galaxies at these epochs has dramatically advanced from increasingly complete population censuses and detailed views of individual galaxies. We highlight some of the key observational insights that influenced our current understanding of galaxy evolution in the equilibrium growth picture: $\bullet$ scaling relations between galaxy properties are fairly well established among massi…
From targeted observations of ground-state OH masers towards 702 Multibeam (MMB) survey 6.7-GHz methanol masers, between Galactic longitudes 186$^{\circ}$ through the Galactic centre to 20$^{\circ}$, made as part of the `MAGMO' project, we present the physical and polarisation properties of the 1720-MHz OH maser transition, including the identification of Zeeman pairs. We present 10 new and 23 previously catalogued 1720-MHz OH maser sources detected towards star formation regions. In addition, we also detected 16 1720-MHz OH masers associated with supernova remnants and two sites of diffuse OH…
We report the discovery of 4 new H$_2$ jets in Mon R1 star-forming region on the images obtained with the 2.5-m telescope of the Caucasian Mountain Observatory of SAI MSU through the filter, centered on the H$_2$ 1-0 S(1) emission line. This discovery confirms the nature of these flows, which existence was previously suspected using archival Spitzer GLIMPSE360 and WISE survey images. Also two infrared reflection nebulae were revealed. On the Herschel PACS survey images we found a small group of far-infrared sources, mostly unknown ones. Among them are the possible exciting objects of these out…
DG Tau B is a Class I young stellar source that drives the asymmetric HH 159 bipolar jet. At optical wavelengths it is obscured by circumstellar optically-thick material. Using VLA and JVLA observations, we determine for the first time the proper motions of this source and find them to be consistent, within error, with those of the nearby young star DG Tau. We also discuss an ejection event that is evident in the 1994 VLA data. As the optical and molecular outflows, this ejection traced in the radio continuum is markedly asymmetric and was detected only to the NW of the star. We propose that t…
We present Chandra X-ray Observatory observations and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph spectra of NGC 5972, one of the 19 "Voorwerpjes" galaxies. This galaxy contains an Extended Emission Line Region (EELR) and an arc-second scale nuclear bubble. NGC 5972 is a faded AGN, with EELR luminosity suggesting a 2.1 dex decrease in L$_{\textrm{bol}}$ in the last $\sim5\times10^{4}$ yr. We investigate the role of AGN feedback in exciting the EELR and bubble given the long-term variability and potential accretion state changes. We detect broadband (0.3-8 keV) nuclear X-ray emission coincident with t…
We present a new large-scale survey of J=3-2 12CO emission covering 4.8 square degrees around the Rosette Nebula. Approximately 2000 compact clumps are identified, with a spatially-invariant power law mass distribution index of -1.8. Most of the inner clumps show velocity gradients of 1-3 km/s/pc, directed away from the exciting nebula. The gradients decrease with distance from the central O stars, and are consistent with a photoionised gas acceleration model, assuming clump lifetimes of a few 10^5 yrs. However, in one clear case, the observed near-constant velocity gradient is difficult to ex…
We study the molecular and the ionized gas in a possible precursor of an UC HII region to contribute to the understanding of how high-mass stars build-up their masses once they have reached the zero-age main secuence. We carried out molecular observations toward the position of the Red MSX source G052.9221-00.4892, using ASTE in the 12CO, 13CO, and C18O J=3-2, and HCO+ J=4-3 lines. We also present radio continuum observations at 6 GHz carried out with the JVLA interferometer. Combining these observations with public infrared data allowed us to inquire about the nature of the source. The analys…
W5-E has been observed with the Herschel-PACS and -SPIRE photometers, at 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 microns. The dust temperature map shows a rather uniform temperature, in the range 17.5-20 K in the dense condensations or filaments, 21-22 K in the photodissociation regions, and 24-31 K in the direction of the ionized regions. The column densities are rather low, everywhere lower than 10^23 cm-2, and of the order of a few 10^21 cm-2 in the PDRs. About 8000 solar masses of neutral material surrounds the ionized region, which is low with respect to the volume of this HII region; we suggest that…
The Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) is a comprehensive, multiwavelength study of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the local universe. Here we present the results of a multi-component, spectral decomposition analysis of the low resolution mid-IR Spitzer IRS spectra from 5-38um of 244 LIRG nuclei. The detailed fits and high quality spectra allow for characterization of the individual PAH features, warm molecular hydrogen emission, and optical depths for silicate dust grains and water ices. We find that starbursting LIRGs, which make up the majority of GOALS, are very consist…
The Next-Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) will be critical for understanding how galaxies are built and evolve at the earliest epochs. The sensitivity and frequency coverage will allow for the detection of cold gas and dust in `normal' distant galaxies, including the low-J transitions of molecular gas tracers such as CO, HNC, and HCO+; synchrotron and free-free continuum emission; and even the exciting possibility of thermal dust emission at the highest (z~7) redshifts. In particular, by enabling the total molecular gas reservoirs to be traced to unprecedented sensitivities across a huge ra…
We investigate to what degree local physical and chemical conditions are related to the evolutionary status of various objects in star-forming media. rho Oph A displays the entire sequence of low-mass star formation in a small volume of space. Using spectrophotometric line maps of H2, H2O, NH3, N2H+, O2, OI, CO, and CS, we examine the distribution of the atomic and molecular gas in this dense molecular core. The physical parameters of these species are derived, as are their relative abundances in rho Oph A. Using radiative transfer models, we examine the infall status of the cold dense cores f…
