We initiate a study into the eikonal exponentiation of the amplitude in impact-parameter space when spinning particles are involved in the scattering. Considering the gravitational scattering of two spin-1/2 particles, we demonstrate that the leading eikonal exhibits exponentiation up to $\mathcal{O}(G^{2})$ in the limit where the spacetime dimension $D\rightarrow4$. We find this to hold for general spin orientations. The exponentiation of the leading eikonal including spin is understood through the unitarity properties at leading order in $\hbar$ of momentum-space amplitudes, allowing the extension of our results to arbitrary-spin scattering.
We approach the issue of exponentiation of soft gauge boson corrections to scattering amplitudes from a path integral point of view. We show that if one represents the amplitude as a first quantized path integral in a mixed coordinate-momentum space representation, a charged particle interacting with a soft gauge field is represented as a Wilson line for a semi-infinite line segment, together with calculable fluctuations. Combining such line segments, we show that exponentiation in an abelian field theory follows immediately from standard path-integral combinatorics. In the non-abelian case, w…
The aim of this note is to explore the interplay between the eikonal resummation in impact-parameter space and the exponentiation of infrared divergences in momentum space for gravity amplitudes describing collisions of massive objects. The eikonal governs the classical dynamics relevant to the two-body problem, and its infrared properties are directly linked to the zero-frequency limit of the gravitational wave emission spectrum and to radiation-reaction effects. Combining eikonal and infrared exponentiations it is possible to derive these properties at a given loop order starting from lower-…
High-energy massless gravitational scattering in ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity was recently analyzed at leading level in the deflection angle, uncovering an interesting connection between exponentiation of infrared divergences in momentum space and the eikonal exponentiation in impact parameter space. Here we extend that analysis to the first non trivial sub-leading level in the deflection angle which, for massless external particles, implies going to two loops, i.e. to third post-Minkowskian (3PM) order. As in the case of the leading eikonal, we see that the factorisation of the momentum space am…
We provide a recursive diagrammatic prescription for the exponentiation of gauge theory amplitudes involving products of Wilson lines and loops. This construction generalizes the concept of webs, originally developed for eikonal form factors and cross sections with two eikonal lines, to general soft functions in QCD and related gauge theories. Our coordinate space arguments apply to arbitrary paths for the lines.
We use $\mathcal N=8$ supergravity as a toy model for understanding the dynamics of black hole binary systems via the scattering amplitudes approach. We compute the conservative part of the classical scattering angle of two extremal (half-BPS) black holes with minimal charge misalignment at $\mathcal O(G^3)$ using the eikonal approximation and effective field theory, finding agreement between both methods. We construct the massive loop integrands by Kaluza-Klein reduction of the known $D$-dimensional massless integrands. To carry out integration we formulate a novel method for calculating the …
The Fradkin-Schwinger functional methods to represent a Green function in an external gravitational field are used to study the eikonal and the next-to-eikonal limit, including the nonlinear gravitational interactions, of the scattering amplitudes of an ultra-relativistic scalar particle on a static super-massive scalar target in the nearly forward limit. The functional approach confirms the exponentiation of the leading eikonal which also applies to the first non-leading power in the energy of the light particle, moreover includes the interaction at impact parameter much larger than the Schwa…
Soft gluon exponentiation in non-abelian gauge theories can be described in terms of webs. So far this description has been restricted to amplitudes with two hard partons, where webs were defined as the colour-connected subset of diagrams. Here we generalise the concept of webs to the multi-leg case, where the hard interaction involves non-trivial colour flow. Using the replica trick from statistical physics we solve the combinatorial problem of non-abelian exponentiation to all orders. In particular, we derive an algorithm for computing the colour factor associated with any given diagram in t…
Eikonal exponentiation in QFT describes the emergence of classical physics at long distances in terms of a non-trivial resummation of infinitely many diagrams. Long ago, 't Hooft proposed a beautiful correspondence between ultra-relativistic scalar eikonal scattering and one-to-one scattering in a background shockwave space-time, bypassing the need to resum. In this spirit, we propose here a covariant method for computing one-to-one amplitudes in curved background space-times which gives rise what we conjecture to be a general expression for the eikonal amplitude. We show how the one-to-one sc…
In this paper we study the subleading contributions to eikonal scattering in (super)gravity theories with particular emphasis on the role of both elastic and inelastic scattering processes. For concreteness we focus on the scattering of various massless particles off a stack of D$p$-branes in type II supergravity in the limit of large impact parameter $b$. We analyse the relevant field theory Feynman diagrams which naturally give rise to both elastic and inelastic processes. We show that in the case analysed the leading and subleading eikonal only depend on elastic processes, while inelastic p…
In this paper we study the two-body gravitational scattering of massive scalars with different masses in general spacetime dimensions. We focus on the Regge limit (eikonal regime) of the resulting scattering amplitudes and discuss how to extract the classical information representing the scattering of two black holes. We derive the leading eikonal and explicitly show the resummation of the first leading energy contribution up to second order in Newton's gravitational constant. We also calculate the subleading eikonal showing that in general spacetime dimensions it receives a non-trivial contri…
We consider correlators of N=4 super Yang Mills of the form A ~ < O_1 O_2 O*_1 O*_2 >, where the operators O_1 and O_2 are scalar primaries. In particular, we analyze this correlator in the planar limit and in a Lorentzian regime corresponding to high energy interactions in AdS. The planar amplitude is dominated by a Regge pole whose nature varies as a function of the 't Hooft coupling g^2. At large g, the pole corresponds to graviton exchange in AdS, whereas at weak g, the pole is that of the hard perturbative BFKL pomeron. We concentrate on the weak coupling regime and analyze pomeron exchan…
The structure of scattering amplitudes in supergravity theories continues to be of interest. Recently, the amplitude for $2\rightarrow 2$ scattering in ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity was presented at three-loop order for the first time. The result can be written in terms of an exponentiated one-loop contribution, modulo a remainder function which is free of infrared singularities, but contains leading terms in the high energy Regge limit. We explain the origin of these terms from a well-known, unitarity-restoring exponentiation of the high-energy gravitational $S$-matrix in impact-parameter space. …
In this paper we present two (a priori independent) derivations of the eikonal operator in string-brane scattering. The first one is obtained by summing surfaces with any number of boundaries, while in the second one the eikonal operator is derived from the three-string vertex in a suitable light-cone gauge. This second derivation shows that the bosonic oscillators present in the leading eikonal operator are to be identified with the string bosonic oscillators in a suitable light-cone gauge, while the first one shows that it exponentiates recovering unitarity. This paper is a review of results…
We consider the recently developed diagrammatic approach to soft-gluon exponentiation in multiparton scattering amplitudes, where the exponent is written as a sum of webs - closed sets of diagrams whose colour and kinematic parts are entangled via mixing matrices. A complementary approach to exponentiation is based on the multiplicative renormalizability of intersecting Wilson lines, and their subsequent finite anomalous dimension. Relating this framework to that of webs, we derive renormalization constraints expressing all multiple poles of any given web in terms of lower-order webs. We exami…
We extend previous techniques for calculations of transplanckian-energy string-string collisions to the high-energy scattering of massless closed strings from a stack of N Dp-branes in Minkowski spacetime. We show that an effective non-trivial metric emerges from the string scattering amplitudes by comparing them against the semiclassical dynamics of high-energy strings in the extremal p-brane background. By changing the energy, impact parameter and effective open string coupling, we are able to explore various interesting regimes and to reproduce classical expectations, including tidal-force …
We further develop the formalism for taking position-space cuts of eikonal diagrams introduced in [Phys.Rev.Lett. 114 (2015), no. 18 181602, arXiv:1410.5681]. These cuts are applied directly to the position-space representation of any such diagram and compute its discontinuity to the leading order in the dimensional regulator. We provide algorithms for computing the position-space cuts and apply them to several two- and three-loop eikonal diagrams, finding agreement with results previously obtained in the literature. We discuss a non-trivial interplay between the cutting prescription and non-A…
We identify an eikonal regime in celestial CFT$_2$ in which massless 2-2 scattering is dominated by t-channel exchange. We derive a formula for the celestial amplitude that resums exchanges of arbitrary integer spin to all orders in the coupling. The resulting eikonal phase takes the same form as in flat space with the powers of center-of-mass energy replaced by weight-shifting operators on the celestial sphere. We independently compute the celestial two-point function for a scalar propagating in a shockwave background and show that to leading order in the gravitational coupling and for a suit…
Asymptotic behavior of the scattering amplitude for two scalar particles by scalar, vector and tensor exchanges at high energy and fixed momentum transfers is reconsidered in quantum field theory. In the framework of the quasi-potential approach and the modified perturbation theory a systematic scheme of finding the leading eikonal scattering amplitudes and its corrections are developed and constructed. The connection between the solutions obtained by quasi-potential and functional approaches is also discussed. The first correction to leading eikonal amplitude is found.
We consider the eikonal phase associated with the gravitational scattering of a highly energetic light particle off a very heavy object in AdS spacetime. A simple expression for this phase follows from the WKB approximation to the scattering amplitude and has been computed to all orders in the ratio of the impact parameter to the Schwarzschild radius of the heavy particle. The eikonal phase is related to the deflection angle by the usual stationary phase relation. We consider the flat space limit and observe that for sufficiently small impact parameters (or angular momenta) the eikonal phase d…
Using a new technique for the extraction of leading-log energy dependence from the non-Abelian portion of quark-line interactions, hadronic scattering amplitudes may be represented in terms of functional integrals over gluonic material exchanged between scattering quarks. If that material is further represented by a condensed tube of gluonic flux (obtained by dimensional transmutation), these functional integrals will produce effective propagators corresponding to plasma oscillations, or ``condensons'', in this condensed gluonic material. These condensons yield a non-zero, non-tachyonic, finit…
The asymptotic behavior of the scattering amplitude for two scalar particles at high energies with fixed momentum transfers is studied. The study is done within the effective theory of quantum gravity based on quasi-potential equation. By using the modified perturbation theory, a systematic method is developed to find the leading eikonal scattering amplitudes together with corrections to them in the one-loop gravitational approximation. The relation is established and discussed between the solutions obtained by means of the operator and functional approaches applied to quasi-potential equation…
Following a semi-classical eikonal approach --- justified at transplanckian energies order by order in the deflection angle $Θ_s\sim\frac{4G\sqrt{s}}{b} \equiv \frac{2 R}{b}$ --- we investigate the infrared features of gravitational scattering and radiation in four space-time dimensions, and we illustrate the factorization and cancellation of the infinite Coulomb phase for scattering and the eikonal resummation for radiation. As a consequence, both the eikonal phase $2δ(E,b)$ and the gravitational-wave (GW) spectrum $\frac{\mathrm{d}E^{GW}}{\mathrm{d}ω}$ are free from infrared problems in a fr…
We extract the long-range gravitational potential between two scalar particles with arbitrary masses from the two-to-two elastic scattering amplitude at 2nd Post-Minkowskian order in arbitrary dimensions. In contrast to the four-dimensional case, in higher dimensions the classical potential receives contributions from box topologies. Moreover, the kinematical relation between momentum and position on the classical trajectory contains a new term which is quadratic in the tree-level amplitude. A precise interplay between this new relation and the formula for the scattering angle ensures that the…

We analyze conformal field theory 4-point functions of the form A ~ O_1(x_1) O_2(x_2) O_1(x_3) O_2(x_4), where the operators O_i are scalar primaries. We show that, in the Lorentzian regime, the limit x_1 -> x_3 is dominated by the exchange of conformal partial waves of highest spin. When partial waves of arbitrary spin contribute to A, the behavior of the Lorentzian amplitude for x_1 -> x_3 must be analyzed using complex-spin techniques, leading to a generalized Regge theory for CFT's. Whenever the CFT is dual to a string theory, the string tree-level contribution A_tree to the amplitude A pr…
We compute the three-loop contribution to the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills planar four-gluon amplitude using the recently-proposed Higgs IR regulator of Alday, Henn, Plefka, and Schuster. In particular, we test the proposed exponential ansatz for the four-gluon amplitude that is the analog of the BDS ansatz in dimensional regularization. By evaluating our results at a number of kinematic points, and also in several kinematic limits, we establish the validity of this ansatz at the three-loop level. We also examine the Regge limit of the planar four-gluon amplitude using several different IR re…
The eikonal approximation is an ideal tool to extract classical observables in gauge theory and gravity directly from scattering amplitudes. Here we consider effective theories of gravity where in addition to the Einstein-Hilbert term we include non-minimal couplings of the type $R^3$, $R^4$ and $FFR$. In particular, we study the scattering of gravitons and photons of frequency $ω$ off heavy scalars of mass $m$ in the limit $m\gg ω\gg |\vec{q}\,|$, where $\vec{q}$ is the momentum transfer. The presence of non-minimal couplings induces helicity-flip processes which survive the eikonal limit, th…
The three-point amplitude is the key building block in the on-shell approach to scattering amplitudes. We show that the classical objects computed by massive three-point amplitudes in gauge theory and gravity are Newman-Penrose scalars in a split-signature spacetime, where three-point amplitudes can be defined for real kinematics. In fact, the quantum state set up by the particle is a coherent state fully determined by the three-point amplitude due to an eikonal-type exponentiation. Having identified this simplest classical solution from the perspective of scattering amplitudes, we explore the…
The leading eikonal S-matrix for three graviton scattering in d=11 supergravity and Matrix Theory are shown to precisely agree. The result unifies the source-probe plus recoil approach of Okawa and Yoneya and relaxes the restriction imposed by those authors that all D-particle impact parameters and velocities are mutually perpendicular. Furthermore, the unified S-matrix approach facilitates a clean-cut study of M-theoretic R^4 curvature corrections to the low energy supergravity effective action. In particular, the leading R^4 correction to the three graviton S-matrix is computed and compared …
Starting from the leading soft term of the 5-point amplitude, involving a graviton and two Kerr black holes, that factorises into the product of the elastic amplitude without the graviton and the leading soft factor, we compute the infrared divergent contribution to the imaginary part of the two-loop eikonal. Then, using analyticity and crossing symmetry, we determine the radiative contribution to the real part of the two-loop eikonal and from it the radiative part of the deflection angle for spins aligned to the orbital angular momentum, the loss of angular momentum and the zero frequency lim…
String-brane interactions provide an ideal framework to study the dynamics of the massive states of the string spectrum in a non-trivial background. We present here an analysis of tree-level amplitudes for processes in which an NS-NS string state from the leading Regge trajectory scatters from a D-brane into another state from the leading Regge trajectory, in general of a different mass, at high energies and small scattering angles. This is done by using world-sheet OPE methods and effective vertex operators. We find that this class of processes has a universal dependence on the energy of the …
Using soft-graviton theorems a well-known zero-frequency limit (ZFL) for the gravitational radiation flux $dE^{GW}/d ω$ is re-derived and extended to order ${\cal O}(ω)$ and ${\cal O}(ω^2)$ for arbitrary massless multi-particle collisions. The (angle-integrated, unpolarized) ${\cal O}(ω)$ correction to the flux turns out to be absent in the case of two-particle elastic collisions. The ${\cal O}(ω^2)$ correction is instead non-vanishing and takes a simple general expression which is then applied to bremsstrahlung from two-particle elastic collisions. For a tree-level process the outcome is fini…
We consider the relativistic scattering of unequal-mass scalar particles through graviton exchange in the small-angle high-energy regime. We show the self-consistency of expansion around the eikonal limit and compute the scattering amplitude up to the next-to-leading power correction of the light particle energy, including gravitational effects of the same order. The first power correction is suppressed by a single power of the ratio of momentum transfer to the energy of the light particle in the rest frame of the heavy particle, independent of the heavy particle mass. We find that only gravit…
We present the two-body Hamiltonian and associated eikonal phase, to leading post-Minkowskian order, for infinitely many tidal deformations described by operators with arbitrary powers of the curvature tensor. Scattering amplitudes in momentum and position space provide systematic complementary approaches. For the tidal operators quadratic in curvature, which describe the linear response to an external gravitational field, we work out the leading post-Minkowskian contributions using a basis of operators with arbitrary numbers of derivatives which are in one-to-one correspondence with the world…
