We investigate the dynamics of two skyrmions lying in distinct layers of an antiferromagnetic bilayer system, consisting of nanostripes with the shape of racetracks. The top and bottom nanostripes are separated by a height offset and they are coupled through a ferromagnetic exchange, allowing the interaction between the skyrmions from both layers. Depending on the distance between the skyrmions they attract each other sufficiently to achieve a bound state. We also analyze their dynamics when an electric current is applied in a unique layer and we determine how the bound-state nucleation depends on the current density and vertical distance between the skyrmions. Finally, we analyzed the robustness of the bound states by considering two situations: 1) a system constituted by clean or homogeneous antiferromagnetic racetracks; 2) a system in which randomly distributed magnetic impurities in both layers are included in the system.
Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like textures in the magnetization, characterized by a topological winding number. Nanometer-scale skyrmions have been observed at room temperature in magnetic multilayer structures. The combination of small size, topological quantization, and their efficient electric manipulation makes them interesting candidates for information carriers in high-performance memory devices. A skyrmion racetrack memory has been suggested where information is encoded in the distance between skyrmions moving in a one-dimensional nanostrip. Here, we propose an alternative design whe…
A magnetic skyrmionium (also called 2$π$-skyrmion) can be understood as a skyrmion - a topologically non-trivial magnetic whirl - which is situated in the center of a second skyrmion with reversed magnetization. Here, we propose a new optoelectrical writing and deleting mechanism for skyrmioniums in thin films, as well as a reading mechanism based on the topological Hall voltage. Furthermore, we point out advantages for utilizing skyrmioniums as carriers of information in comparison to skyrmions with respect to the current-driven motion. We simulate all four constituents of an operating skyrmi…
A magnetic skyrmion is a topological magnetization structure with a nanometric size and a well-defined swirling spin distribution, which is anticipated to be an essential building block for novel skyrmion-based device applications. We study the motion of magnetic skyrmions in multilayer synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) racetracks as well as in conventional monolayer ferromagnetic (FM) racetracks at finite temperature. There is an odd-even effect of the constituent FM layer number on the skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE). Namely, due to the suppression of the SkHE, the magnetic skyrmion has no trans…
Magnetic skyrmions are promising for building next-generation magnetic memories and spintronic devices due to their stability, small size and the extremely low currents needed to move them. In particular, skyrmion-based racetrack memory is attractive for information technology, where skyrmions are used to store information as data bits instead of traditional domain walls. Here we numerically demonstrate the impacts of skyrmion-skyrmion and skyrmion-edge repulsions on the feasibility of skyrmion-based racetrack memory. The reliable and practicable spacing between consecutive skyrmionic bits on …
Magnetic skyrmion, vortex-like swirling topologically stable spin configurations, is appealing as information carrier for future nanoelectronics, owing to the stability, small size and extremely low driving current density. One of the most promising applications of skyrmion is to build racetrack memory (RM). Compared to domain wall-based RM (DW-RM), skyrmion-based RM (Sky-RM) possesses quite a few benefits in terms of energy, density and speed etc. Until now, the fundamental behaviors, including nucleation/annihilation, motion and detection of skyrmion have been intensively investigated. Howev…
We theoretically study the dynamics of ferrimagnetic skyrmions in inhomogeneous metallic films close to the angular momentum compensation point. In particular, it is shown that the line of the vanishing angular momentum can be utilized as a self-focusing racetrack for skyrmions. To that end, we begin by deriving the equations of motion for the dynamics of collinear ferrimagnets in the presence of a charge current. The obtained equations of motion reduce to those of ferromagnets and antiferromagnets at two special limits. In the collective coordinate approach, a skyrmion behaves as a massive ch…
In skyrmion-based racetrack memories, the information encoded by skyrmions may be destroyed due to the skyrmion Hall effect, which can be surmounted by using synthetic antiferromagnetic racetracks. Hence, the manipulation of skyrmions in synthetic antiferromagnetic racetracks is important for practical applications. Here, we computationally study the interaction between a pair of skyrmions and a locally modified region in a synthetic antiferromagnetic racetrack, where the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy or thickness is locally adjusted to be different from that of the rest region of the race…
During the last years, topologically protected collective modes of the magnetization have called much attention. Among these, skyrmions and merons have been the object of intense study. In particular, topological skyrmions are objects with an integer skyrmion number $Q$ while merons have a half-integer skyrmion charge $q$. In this work, we consider a $Q=1$ skyrmion, composed by a meron and an antimeron (bimeron), displacing in a ferromagnetic racetrack, disputing a long-distance competition with its more famous counterpart, the typical $Q=1$ cylindrically symmetrical skyrmion. Both types of to…
Magnetic skyrmions are whirl-like nano-objects with topological protection. When driven by direct currents (DC), skyrmions move but experience a transverse deflection. This so-called skyrmion Hall effect is often regarded a drawback for memory applications. Herein, we show that this unique effect can also be favorable for spintronic applications: We show that in a racetrack with a broken inversion symmetry, the skyrmion Hall effect allows to translate an alternating current (AC) into a directed motion along the track, like in a ratchet. We analyze several modes of the ratchet mechanism and sho…
Magnetic storage based on racetrack memory is very promising for the design of ultra-dense, low-cost and low-power storage technology. Information can be coded in a magnetic region between two domain walls or, as predicted recently, in topological magnetic objects known as skyrmions. Here, we show the technological advantages and limitations of using Bloch and Neel skyrmions manipulated by spin current generated within the ferromagnet or via the spin-Hall effect arising from a non-magnetic heavy metal underlayer. We found that the Neel skyrmion moved by the spin-Hall effect is a very promising…
In this paper we investigate a magnetic racetrack consisting of a junction of three materials with different properties. Indeed, this magnetic system is composed by two distinct regions (racetracks) connected by a thin interface: the first region (termed sector $1$) has isotropic in-plane magnetic chirality and supports skyrmion ($S$) excitations while the second (sector $3$) has anisotropic chirality and consequently supports antiskyrmions ($A$). The interface, which would be a third region (sector $2$, connecting sectors $1$ and $3$) located in the central part of the racetrack, is an easy-a…
The skyrmion racetrack is a promising concept for future information technology. There, binary bits are carried by nanoscale spin swirls -- skyrmions -- driven along magnetic strips. Stability of the skyrmions is a critical issue for the realization of this technology. Here we demonstrate that the racetrack skyrmion lifetime can be calculated from first principles as a function of temperature, magnetic field and track width. Our method combines harmonic transition state theory extended to include Goldstone modes, with an atomistic spin Hamiltonian parametrized from density functional theory ca…
Magnetic skyrmions are chiral spin textures with attractive features, such as ultra-small size, solitonic nature, and easy mobility with small electrical currents that make them promising as information-carrying bits in low-power high-density memory, and logic applications. However, it is essential to guarantee the positional stability of skyrmions for reliable information extraction. Using micromagnetic simulations for the minimum energy path (MEP), we compute the energy barriers associated with stabilizing notches along a racetrack. We vary material parameters, specifically, the strength of …
Magnetic skyrmion holds promise as information carriers in the next-generation memory and logic devices, owing to the topological stability, small size and extremely low current needed to drive it. One of the most potential applications of skyrmion is to design racetrack memory (RM), named Sk-RM, instead of utilizing domain wall (DW). However, current studies face some key design challenges, e.g., skyrmion manipulation, data representation and synchronization etc. To address these challenges, we propose here a complementary Sk-RM structure with voltage manipulation. Functionality and performan…
Skyrmion racetrack memory has a lots of potential in future non-volatile solid state devices. In general such devices require current to nucleate skyrmions via spin transfer torque (STT) effect. Further the current is also required to drive the skyrmions in the nanowire device. However the current applied during nucleation of successive skyrmions may have unwanted perturbation \emph{viz.} Joule heating and skyrmion Hall effect, on the propagation of previously generated skyrmions. Therefore new methodology is required to decouple the generation and propagation of skyrmions. Here we present a n…
Materials hosting magnetic skyrmions at room temperature could enable new computing architectures as well as compact and energetically efficient magnetic storage such as racetrack memories. In a racetrack device, information is coded by the presence/absence of magnetic skyrmions forming a chain that is moved through the device. The skyrmion Hall effect that would eventually lead to an annihilation of the skyrmions at the edges of the racetrack can be suppressed for example by anti-ferromagnetically-coupled skyrmions. However, avoiding modifications of the inter-skyrmion distances in the racetr…
Race logic is a relative timing code that represents information in a wavefront of digital edges on a set of wires in order to accelerate dynamic programming and machine learning algorithms. Skyrmions, bubbles, and domain walls are mobile magnetic configurations (solitons) with applications for Boolean data storage. We propose to use current-induced displacement of these solitons on magnetic racetracks as a native temporal memory for race logic computing. Locally synchronized racetracks can spatially store relative timings of digital edges and provide non-destructive read-out. The linear kinem…
We analyze bilayer quantum Hall ferromagnets, whose underlying symmetry group is SU(4). Spin-pseudospin coherence develops spontaneously when the total electron density is low enough. Quasiparticles are CP^3 skyrmions. One skyrmion induces charge modulations on both of the two layers. At the filling factor$ν=2/m$ one elementary excitation consists of a pair of skyrmions and its charge is $2e/m$. Recent experimental data due to Sawada et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 80}, 4534 (1998)] support this conclusion.
Quantum Hall states that result from interaction induced lifting of the eight-fold degeneracy of the zeroth Landau level in bilayer graphene are considered. We show that at even filling factors electric charge is injected into the system in the form of charge $2e$ skyrmions. This is a rare example of binding of charges in a system with purely repulsive interactions. We calculate the skyrmion energy and size as a function of the Zeeman interaction, and discuss signatures of the charge $2e$ skyrmions in the scanning tunneling microscopy experiments.
We study how impurities influence the current-induced dynamics of magnetic Skyrmions moving in a racetrack geometry. For this, we solve numerically the generalized Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation extended by the current-induced spin transfer torque. In particular, we investigate two classes of impurities, non-conducting and magnetic impurities. The former are magnetically rigid objects and yield to an inhomogeneous current density over the racetrack which we determine separately by solving the fundamental electrostatic equations. In contrast, magnetic impurities leave the applied current dens…
By tilting the samples in the magnetic field, we measured and compared the Skyrmion excitations in the bilayer quantum Hall (QH) state at the Landau-level filling factor $ν=2$ and in the monolayer QH state at $ν=1$. The observed number of flipped spins is $N_s=14$ in the bilayer system with a large tunneling gap, and $N_s=7$ in the bilayer system with a small tunneling gap, while it is $N_s=7$ in the monolayer system. The difference is interpreted due to the interlayer exchange interaction. Moreover, we have observed seemingly preferred numbers $N_s=14,7,1$ for the flipped spins by tilting bil…
Magnetic skyrmions and their anti-particles, the antiskyrmions, are stable magnetic solitons existing down to the nanometer scale. Their stability and size as well as the possibility to propel them by, e.g., electric currents make them promising candidates for the use in memory devices, such as racetrack memories. Skyrmions and antiskyrmions share those same advantages individually, but may annihilate each other when they coexist in the same device. Yet, combining them to represent logical bits of 0 (skyrmion) and 1 (antiskyrmion) in one device opens new possibilities to create new types of de…
We theoretically study the interaction of an isolated bimeron skyrmion in quasi-two-dimensional easy-plane magnets with a surrounding spin superfluid associated with spontaneously broken U(1) spin-rotational symmetry, revealing that skyrmion energy depends on the local spin current flowing in its background. The finding leads us to propose to manipulate a skyrmion energy landscape via a spin supercurrent, which can be controlled non-locally by varying the magnitudes of spin-current injection and ejection through the boundaries. Two exemplary cases are discussed: a steady-state motion of a skyr…
Skyrmion bags as spin textures with arbitrary topological charge are expected to be the carriers in racetrack memory. Here, we theoretically and numerically investigated the dynamics of skyrmion bags in an anisotropy gradient. It is found that, without the boundary potential, the dynamics of skyrmion bags are dependent on the spin textures, and the velocity of skyrmionium with $Q = 0$ is faster than other skyrmion bags. However, when the skyrmion bags move along the boundary, the velocities of all skyrmion bags with different $Q$ are same. This can be attributed to the same value of $u/η_{xx}$…
The antiferromagnetic coupling and entanglement between skyrmion lattices are treated in magnetic bilayer systems. We first formulate the problem of large bilayer skyrmions using $\mathbb{CP}^{1}\otimes \mathbb{CP}^{1}$ theory. We have considered bilayer skyrmions under the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DMI) and Zeeman interactions confined in a two-dimensional chiral magnet such as Fe$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$Si. We parametrize bilayer skyrmions using $SU(4)$ representation, and represent each skyrmion and antiskyrmion using Schmidt decomposition. The reduced density matrices for skyrmion and an…
Arising from emergent electromagnetic field of magnetic skyrmions due to their nontrivial topology, the skyrmion Hall effect might be a roadblock for practical applications since any longitudinal motions of skyrmions in nanotrack is accompanied by a transverse motion. A direct consequence of such an effect is easy destruction of skyrmions at the nanotrack edges during their fast motions along the nanotrack, despite their topological protection. Here we propose an entirely novel solution of completely inhibiting such skyrmion Hall effect without affecting its topological properties based on a a…
The advent of Moiré materials has galvanized interest in the nature of charge carriers in topological bands. In contrast to conventional materials where charge carriers are electron-like quasiparticles, topological bands allow for more exotic possibilities where charge is carried by nontrivial topological textures, such as skyrmions. However, the real space description of skyrmions is ill-suited to address the limit of small or `baby' skyrmions which consist of an electron and a few spin flips. Here, we study the formation of the smallest skyrmions -- spin polarons, formed as bound states of a…
Skyrmions and domain walls are typical spin textures of significant technological relevance to magnetic memory and logic applications, where they are used as carriers of information. The unique topology of skyrmions makes them to display distinct dynamical properties compared to domain walls. Some studies have demonstrated that the two topologically inequivalent magnetic objects could be interconverted by cleverly designed geometric structures. Here, we numerically address the skyrmion-domain wall collision in a magnetic racetrack by introducing relative motion between the two objects based on…
We report the current-driven dynamics of frustrated skyrmions in an antiferromagnetically exchange coupled bilayer system, where the bilayer skyrmion consists of two monolayer skyrmions with opposite skyrmion numbers $Q$. We show that the in-plane current-driven bilayer skyrmion moves in a straight path, while the out-of-plane current-driven bilayer skyrmion moves in a circular path. It is found that the in-plane current-driven mobility of a bilayer skyrmion is much better than the monolayer one at a large ratio of $β/α$, where $α$ and $β$ denote the damping parameter and non-adiabatic spin tr…
Bilayer quantum Hall states at $ν=1$ have been demonstrated to possess a distinguished state with interlayer phase coherence. The state has both excitations of Skyrmion with spin and pseudoSkyrmion with pseudospin. We show that Skyrmion $\leftrightarrow$ pseudoSkyrmion transition arises in the state by changing imbalance between electron densities in both layers; PseudoSkyrmion is realized at balance point, while Skyrmion is realized at large imbalance. The transition can be seen by observing the dependence of activation energies on magnetic field parallel to the layers.
We show that the electric charge of the Skyrmion in the vector order parameters that characterize the quantum anomalous spin Hall state and the layer-antiferromagnet in a graphene bilayer is four and zero, respectively. The result is based on the demonstration that a vortex configuration in two broken symmetry states in bilayer graphene with the quadratic band crossing has the number of zero modes doubled relative to the single layer. The doubling can be understood as a result of Kramers' theorem implied by the "pseudo time reversal" symmetry of the vortex Hamiltonian. Disordering the quantum …
Inevitable for the basic principles of skyrmion racetrack-like applications is not only their confined motion along one-dimensional channels but also their controlled creation and annihilation. Helical magnets have been suggested to naturally confine the motion of skyrmions along the tracks formed by the helices, which also allow for high-speed skyrmion motion. We propose a protocol to create topological magnetic structures in a helical background. We furthermore analyse the stability and current-driven motion of the skyrmions in a helical background with in-plane uniaxial anisotropy fixing th…
Magnetic skyrmionium is a novel magnetization configuration with zero skyrmion number, which is composed by two skyrmions with opposite skyrmion number. Here, we study the dynamics of skyrmionium under an anisotropy gradient. We find that the skyrmionium can be efficiently driven by an anisotropy gradient with moving straightly along the direction of gradient. The skyrmion Hall angle for skyrmionium is close to zero which is much smaller than that of skyrmion. while the speed is much larger. We also demonstrate that the skyrmionium motion depends on the damping cofficient, and the skyrmionium …
Magnetic skyrmion technology is promising for the next-generation spintronics-based memory and neuromorphic computing due to their small size, non-volatility and low depinning current density. However, the Magnus force originating from the skyrmion Hall effect causes the skyrmion to move along a curved trajectory, which may lead to the annihilation of the skyrmion in a nanotrack during current-induced skyrmion motion. Consequently, circuits utilizing skyrmionic motion need to be designed to limit the impact of the skyrmion Hall effect. In this work, we propose a design of an artificial neuron,…
Magnetic skyrmions are textures behaving as quasiparticles which are topologically different from other states. Their discovery in systems with broken inversion symmetry sparked the search for materials containing such magnetic phase at room temperature. Their topological properties combined with the chirality-related spin-orbit torques make them interesting objects to control the magnetization at nanoscale. Here we show that a pair of coupled skyrmions with the same topological charge and opposite chiralities can be stabilized in a symmetric magnetic bilayer system by combining Dzyaloshinskii…
Theoretical investigation demonstrates that the composite bilayer (i.e., chiral-magnetic/ferroelectric bilayer) offers the possibility of electric-induced magnetic Skyrmions [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{94}, 014311 (2016)]. In this Article, we propose a micromagnetic model to physically manipulate magnetic Bloch Skyrmions propagating in a chiral-magnetic thin film with a polarized ferroelectric essential to drive the system through the converse magnetoelectric effect. Effects caused by different velocities of the propagation, sizes of the thin film, and strength of the magnetoelectric couplings stron…
We fabricate devices in which a magnetic nanopillar spin valve makes contact to a Co/Pt bilayer thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, in order to achieve local control of domains in the Co/Pt bilayer underneath the nanopillar. The goal is to develop the ability to nucleate, detect, and annihilate magnetic skyrmions in the Co/Pt using spin-polarized currents from the nanopillar. We demonstrate the ability to distinguish the local behavior of the Co/Pt film beneath the nanopillar from the extended film and show that the two can switch independently of each other. This allows us to is…
We investigate a mechanical method to manipulate magnetic Bloch Skyrmions by applying an electric field in a composite chiral-magnetic (CM)/ferroelectric (FE) bilayer. The magnetoelectric coupling at the interface allows the electric field to stimulate magnetic ordering. Therefore it offers the possibility to generate Skyrmions [Phys. Rev. B 94, 014311 (2016)]. Here, we design a movable and localized electric field source to drive skyrmion transport along the bilayer. A traveling velocity of the electric field source must be carefully chosen to show the stability and effciency of this process.…
Ensembles of magnetic skyrmions in confined geometries are shown to exhibit thermally driven motion on two different time scales. The intrinsic fluctuating dynamics ($t\sim 1~$ps) is governed by short-range symmetric and antisymmetric exchange interactions, whereas the long-time limit ($t\gtrsim10\,$ns) is determined by the coaction of skyrmion-skyrmion-repulsion and the system's geometry. Micromagnetic simulations for realistic island shapes and sizes are performed and analyzed, indicating the special importance of skyrmion dynamics at finite temperatures. We demonstrate how the competition b…

Controlling magnetism with electric fields is a key challenge to develop future energy-efficient devices, however, the switching between inversion symmetric states, e.g. magnetization up and down as used in current technology, is not straightforward, since the electric field does not break time-reversal symmetry. Here, we demonstrate that local electric fields can be used to reversibly switch between a magnetic skyrmion and the ferromagnetic state. These two states are topologically inequivalent, and we find that the direction of an electric field directly determines the final state. This obse…
At the filling factor $ν=2$ the bilayer quantum Hall system has three phases, the ferromagnetic phase (spin phase), the spin singlet phase (ppin phase) and the canted antiferromagnetic phase. We analyze soft waves and quasiparticle excitations in the spin and ppin phases. It is shown that the dynamic field is the Grassmannian G$_{4,2}$ field carrying four complex degrees of freedom. In each phase there are four complex soft waves (pseudo-Goldstone modes) and one kind of skyrmion excitations (G$_{4,2}$ skyrmions) flipping either spins or pseudospins coherently. An intriguing property is that a …
Magnetic Skyrmions and multiferroics are the most interesting objects in nanostructure science that have great potential in future spin-electronic technology. The study of multiferroic Skyrmions has attracted much interest in recent years. This article reports magnetic Bloch Skyrmions induced by an electric driving field in a composite bilayer (chiral-magnetic/ferroelectric bilayer) lattice. By using the spin dynamics method, we use a classical magnetic spin model and an electric pseudospin model, which are coupled by a strong magnetoelectric coupling in the dynamical simulations. The recent discovery of two-dimensional (2D) Van der Waals (VdW) magnets is a crucial turning point in the quantum magnet research field, since quantum fluctuations and experimental difficulties often elude stable magnetic orders in 2D. This opens new doors to delve for novel quantum and topological spin configurations, which may or may not have direct analogs in bulk counterparts. Here we study a twisted bilayer geometry of 2D magnets in which long-range spin-spin interactions naturally commence along the inter-layer Heisenberg ($J_{\perp}$) and dipole-dipole ($J_{\rm D}$) channels. The $J_{\…
