Magnetic racetrack architectures that use topological magnetic particles to store information are one of the most promising concepts for future storage applications. Antiferromagnetic racetracks are particularly appealing as they are not susceptible to external magnetic fields. State-of-the-art racetracks use magnetic fields, spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques caused by electric currents to move the bits across the entire circuit. However, the application of currents in many antiferromagnetic racetracks is limited because many of them are insulating. Recently, however, a concept for ferromagnetic racetrack memories that are free of global driving forces has been proposed. It has been demonstrated that various topological entities can be generated and transported over long distances solely through local magnetization rotation at the sample boundaries, independent of global driving forces. Here, we demonstrate that the local rotation of magnetization at the boundary of an antiferromagnetic sample can be exploited in racetracks to efficiently generate and transmit antiferromagnetic skyrmions. Additionally, we demonstrate that local switching of staggered magnetization at the edge of an antiferromagnetic racetrack can be even more successful than the rotational procedure. A comparison of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic processing of skyrmionic bits, together with energy considerations, shows that this procedure is fairly efficient in antiferromagnets.
Skyrmion-based spin torque nano-oscillators are potential next-generation microwave signal generators. However, ferromagnetic skyrmion-based spin torque nano-oscillators cannot reach high oscillation frequencies. In this work, we propose to use the circular motion of an antiferromagnetic skyrmion to create the oscillation signal in order to overcome this obstacle. Micromagnetic simulations demonstrate that the antiferromagnetic skyrmion-based spin torque nano-oscillators can produce high frequencies (tens of GHz). Furthermore, the speed of the circular motion for an antiferromagnetic skyrmion …
Magnetic skyrmion is a topologically protected domain-wall structure at nanoscale, which could serve as a basic building block for advanced spintronic devices. Here, we propose a microwave field-driven skyrmionic device with the transistor-like function, where the motion of a skyrmion in a voltage-gated ferromagnetic nanotrack is studied by micromagnetic simulations. It is demonstrated that the microwave field can drive the motion of a skyrmion by exciting propagating spin waves, and the skyrmion motion can be governed by a gate voltage. We also investigate the microwave current-assisted creat…
Exotic spin textures viz. chiral domain wall, vortices, skyrmion, skyrmionium, etc. have recently emerged as active field of research because of their potential applications in high density data storage technology and logic gate computing. Magnetic skyrmionium is a skyrmion like soliton, which carries zero topological quantum number. Skyrmioniums are superior to conventional skyrmions in ferromagnets due to their negligible skyrmion hall effect and higher velocity. The physical properties of both skyrmion and skyrmionium have been investigated rigorously in ferromagnetic systems. Recent observ…
Antiferromagnetic skyrmion crystals are magnetic phases predicted to exist in antiferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Their spatially periodic noncollinear magnetic texture gives rise to topological bulk magnon bands characterized by nonzero Chern numbers. We find topologically-protected chiral magnonic edge states over a wide range of magnetic fields and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction values. Moreover, and of particular importance for experimental realizations, edge states appear at the lowest possible energies, namely, within the first bulk magnon gap. Thus, antiferromag…
Neél skyrmions originate from interfacial Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction (DMI). Recent studies have explored using ferromagnet to host Neél skyrmions for device applications. However, challenges remain to reduce the size of skyrmion to near 10 nm. Amorphous rare-earth-transitional-metal ferrimagnets are attractive alternative materials to obtain ultrasmall skyrmions at room temperature. Their intrinsic perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and tunable magnetization provides a favorable environment for skyrmion stability. In this work, we employ atomistic stochastic Landau-Liftshitz-Gilbert (LLG…
Inevitable for the basic principles of skyrmion racetrack-like applications is not only their confined motion along one-dimensional channels but also their controlled creation and annihilation. Helical magnets have been suggested to naturally confine the motion of skyrmions along the tracks formed by the helices, which also allow for high-speed skyrmion motion. We propose a protocol to create topological magnetic structures in a helical background. We furthermore analyse the stability and current-driven motion of the skyrmions in a helical background with in-plane uniaxial anisotropy fixing th…
A magnetic skyrmion is a topological magnetization structure with a nanometric size and a well-defined swirling spin distribution, which is anticipated to be an essential building block for novel skyrmion-based device applications. We study the motion of magnetic skyrmions in multilayer synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) racetracks as well as in conventional monolayer ferromagnetic (FM) racetracks at finite temperature. There is an odd-even effect of the constituent FM layer number on the skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE). Namely, due to the suppression of the SkHE, the magnetic skyrmion has no trans…
Néel-type magnetic skyrmions in multilayer films have attracted significant amount of attention recently for their stability at room temperature and capability of motion driven by a low-density electrical current, which can be potentially applied to spintronic devices. However, the thermal effect on the formation of the skyrmions and their behavior has rarely been studied. Here, we report a study on the creation of skyrmions in [Pt/Co/Ta]10 multilayer samples at different temperatures using an in-situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. By imaging the magnetization reversal process from …

We determine sizes and activation energies of kπ-skyrmions on a discrete lattice using the Landau- Lifshitz-Gilbert equation and the geodesic nudged elastic band method. The employed atomic material parameters are based on the skyrmionic material system Pd/Fe/Ir(111). We find that the critical magnetic fields for collapse of the 2π-skyrmion and 3π-skyrmion are very close to each other and considerably lower than the critical field of the 1π-skyrmion. The activation energy protecting the structures does not strictly decrease with increasing k as it can be larger for the 3π-skyrmion than for the…
Magnetic skyrmions can be considered as topologically protected localized vortex-like spin textures. Due to their stability, their small size, and the possibility to move them by low electric currents they are promising candidates for spintronic devices. Without violating topological protection, it is possible to create skyrmion-antiskyrmion pairs, as long as the total charge remains unchanged. We derive a skyrmion equation of motion which reveals how spin-polarized charge currents create skyrmion-antiskyrmion pairs. It allows to identify general prerequisites for the pair creation process. We…
In this work, we utilize voltage controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) to manipulate magnetic skyrmions that are fixed in space. Memory devices based on this strategy can potentially be of smaller footprint and better energy efficiency than current-controlled motion-based skyrmionic devices. To demonstrate VCMA induced manipulation of skyrmions, we fabricate antiferromagnet/ferromagnet/oxide heterostructure films where skyrmions can be stabilized without any external magnetic field due to the presence of exchange bias. These isolated skyrmions were annihilated by applying a voltage pulse that …
We demonstrate that the nontrivial magnetic texture of antiferromagnetic skyrmions (AFM-Sks) promotes a non-vanishing topological spin Hall effect (TSHE) on the flowing electrons. This results in a substantial enhancement of the non-adiabatic torque and hence improves the skyrmion mobility. This non-adiabatic torque increases when decreasing the skyrmion size, and therefore scaling down results in a much higher torque efficiency. In clean AFM-Sks, we find a significant boost of the TSHE close to van Hove singularity. Interestingly, this effect is enhanced away from the band gap in the presence…

Topological spin textures can be found in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional nanostructures, which are of great importance to advanced spintronic applications. Here we report the current-induced skyrmion tube dynamics in three-dimensional synthetic antiferromagnetic (SyAF) bilayer and multilayer nanostructures. It is found that the SyAF skyrmion tube made of thinner sublayer skyrmions is more stable during its motion, which ensures that a higher speed of the skyrmion tube can be reached effectively at larger driving current. In the SyAF multilayer with a given total thickness, the curr…
We present a theoretical study on nucleation and propagation of antiferromagnetic skyrmionium induced by spin current injection. A skyrmionium, also known as 2π skyrmion, is a vortex-like magnetic structure characterized by a topological charge, the so-called skyrmion number, being zero. We find that an antiferromagnetic skyrmionium can be generated via a local injection of spin current with toroidal distribution. A spatially uniform spin current is then demonstrated to induce a propagation of the skyrmionium. We derive an expression for the skyrmionium velocity based on a collective-coordinat…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically non-trivial spin textures of potential interest for future information storage applications, and for such purposes, the control and understanding of single skyrmion creation is required. A scheme is analyzed to create single Néel-type and Bloch-type skyrmions in helimagnetic thin films utilizing the dynamical excitations induced by the Oersted field and the spin transfer torque given by a vertically injected spin-polarized current. A topological charge analysis using a lattice version of the topological charge provides insight into the locally triggered tra…
In skyrmion-based racetrack memories, the information encoded by skyrmions may be destroyed due to the skyrmion Hall effect, which can be surmounted by using synthetic antiferromagnetic racetracks. Hence, the manipulation of skyrmions in synthetic antiferromagnetic racetracks is important for practical applications. Here, we computationally study the interaction between a pair of skyrmions and a locally modified region in a synthetic antiferromagnetic racetrack, where the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy or thickness is locally adjusted to be different from that of the rest region of the race…
Recent advances in the physics of current-driven antiferromagnetic skyrmions have observed the absence of a Magnus force. We outline the symmetry reasons for this phenomenon, and show that this cancellation will fail in the case of spin polarized currents. Pairing micromagnetic simulations with semiclassical spin wave transport theory, we demonstrate that skyrmions produce a spin-polarized transverse magnon current, and that spin-polarized magnon currents can in turn produce transverse motion of antiferromagnetic skyrmions. We examine qualitative differences in the frequency dependence of the …
Skyrmions are topologically protected entities in magnetic materials which have the potential to be used in spintronics for information storage and processing. However, Skyrmions in ferromagnets have some intrinsic difficulties which must be overcome to use them for spintronic applications, such as the inability to move straight along current. We show that Skyrmions can also be stabilized and manipulated in antiferromagnetic materials. An antiferromagnetic Skyrmion is a compound topological object with a similar but of opposite sign spin texture on each sublattice, which e.g. results in a comp…
From a theoretical perspective, we demonstrate that nanometric magnetic skyrmions are created by application of a circularly polarized microwave magnetic field to a thin-plate Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya ferromagnet with fabricated rectangular holes. This phenomenon is caused by an effective steady magnetic field perpendicular to the microwave-polarization plane induced by the rotating magnetic field and the intense interference of spin waves excited by this magnetic field due to the hole structure, which causes reversals of local magnetizations and results in the formation of skyrmions. Our proposa…
The dynamics of antiferromagnets is a current hot topic in condensed matter physics and spintronics. However, the dynamics of insulating antiferromagnets cannot be excited by an electric current, which is a method usually used to manipulate ferromagnetic metals. Here, we propose to use the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy gradient as an excitation source to manipulate insulating antiferromagnetic textures. We analytically and numerically study the dynamics of an antiferromagnetic skyrmion driven by a magnetic anisotropy gradient. Our analytical calculations demonstrate that such a magnet…
To exploit nanometric magnetic skyrmions as information carriers in high-density storage devices, a method is needed that creates intended number of skyrmions at specified places in the device preferably at a low energy cost. We theoretically propose that using a system with a fabricated hole or notch, the controlled creation of individual skyrmions can be achieved even when using an external magnetic field applied to the entire specimen. The fabricated defect turns out to work like a catalyst to reduce the energy barrier for the skyrmion creation.
We study the creation of quantum skyrmions in quadratic nanoscopic lattices of quantum spins coupled by Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya and exchange interactions. We numerically show that different kinds of quantum skyrmions, characterized by the magnitude of their spin expectation values and strong differences in their stability, can appear as ground state and as metastable excitations. In dependence on the coupling strengths and the lattice size, an adiabatic rotation scheme of the magnetization at the lattice boundaries allows for a controlled creation of quantum skyrmions.
We investigate skyrmion configuration and dynamics in antiferromagnetic thin disks. It is shown that the skyrmion acquires oscillatory dynamics with well-defined amplitude and frequency which may be controlled on demand by the spin-polarized current. Such dynamics are robust in the sense that an interface between two half-disks cannot change the dynamics appreciably. Indeed, the skyrmion keeps its oscillatory despite crossing this interface. The way skyrmion found to do that is by modifying its core region shape so that its total energy is unaltered for several cycles.
We fabricate devices in which a magnetic nanopillar spin valve makes contact to a Co/Pt bilayer thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, in order to achieve local control of domains in the Co/Pt bilayer underneath the nanopillar. The goal is to develop the ability to nucleate, detect, and annihilate magnetic skyrmions in the Co/Pt using spin-polarized currents from the nanopillar. We demonstrate the ability to distinguish the local behavior of the Co/Pt film beneath the nanopillar from the extended film and show that the two can switch independently of each other. This allows us to is…
Magnetic skyrmions are topological solitons with a nanoscale winding spin texture that hold promise for spintronics applications. Until now, skyrmions have been observed in a variety of magnets that exhibit nearly parallel alignment for the neighbouring spins, but theoretically, skyrmions with anti-parallel neighbouring spins are also possible. The latter, antiferromagnetic skyrmions, may allow more flexible control compared to the conventional ferromagnetic skyrmions. Here, by combining neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that a fractional antiferromagnetic skyrmion lattic…

We employ a self-consistent simulation approach based on quantum physics here to study the magnetism of antiferromagnetic skyrmions formed on manolayer nanodisk planes. We find that if the disk is small and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction is weak, a single magnetic vortex may be formed on the disk plane. In such a case, when uniaxial anisotropy normal to the disk plane is further considered, the magnetic configuration remains unchanged, but the magnetization is enhanced in that direction, and reduced in other two perpendicular orientations. Very similarly, a weak external magnetic fi…
Based on atomistic spin dynamics simulations, we report the ultrafast generation of single antiferromagnetic (AFM) skyrmions in a confined geometry. This process is achieved through an effective magnetic field induced by the athermal inverse Faraday effect from a short laser pulse. The resulting field can nucleate an isolated skyrmion as a topologically protected metastable state in a collinear antiferromagnet with small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The radius of a single skyrmion is shown to increase by applying a uniform dc magnetic field and at increasing temperature. To investigate p…
We report the current-driven dynamics of frustrated skyrmions in an antiferromagnetically exchange coupled bilayer system, where the bilayer skyrmion consists of two monolayer skyrmions with opposite skyrmion numbers $Q$. We show that the in-plane current-driven bilayer skyrmion moves in a straight path, while the out-of-plane current-driven bilayer skyrmion moves in a circular path. It is found that the in-plane current-driven mobility of a bilayer skyrmion is much better than the monolayer one at a large ratio of $β/α$, where $α$ and $β$ denote the damping parameter and non-adiabatic spin tr…
We have investigated quantum Hall skyrmions at filling factor ν=1 carrying more than one unit of topological, and hence electric, charge. Using a combination of analytic and numerical methods we find the counterintuitive result that when the Zeeman energy is tuned to values much smaller than the interaction energy (g μ_B B/(e^2/ε\ell) < 9*10^{-5}),the creation energy of a charge two skyrmion becomes less than twice the creation energy of a charge one skyrmion, i.e. skyrmions bind in pairs. The doubly charged skyrmions are stable to further accretion of charge and exhibit a 10% larger spin per …

Spin waves in antiferromagnetic materials have great potential for next-generation magnonic technologies. However, their properties and their dependence on the type of ground-state antiferromagnetic structure are still open questions. Here, we investigate theoretically spin waves in one- and two-dimensional model systems with a focus on noncollinear antiferromagnetic textures such as spin spirals and skyrmions of opposite topological charges. We address in particular the nonreciprocal spin excitations recently measured in bulk antiferromagnet $α$--$\text{Cu}_2\text{V}_2\text{O}_7$ utilizing in…
An ideal layered $\hat{x}$-polarized antiferromagnet (AFM) between two antialigned $\pm \hat{z}$ polarized ferromagnetic (FM) contacts transmits no current due to a $π$ phase difference of the matrix elements coupling the spin degenerate states to the two FM contacts. The ratio of the two matrix elements coupling the two spin degenerate $\hat{x}$ AFM states to a $\hat{z}$ FM contact is determined by the exchange energy and the eigenstate energy. Inserting a normal metal layer or tunnel barrier layer between one FM contact and the AFM alters this phase difference, and, due to the unequal weight…
We investigate the dynamics of two skyrmions lying in distinct layers of an antiferromagnetic bilayer system, consisting of nanostripes with the shape of racetracks. The top and bottom nanostripes are separated by a height offset and they are coupled through a ferromagnetic exchange, allowing the interaction between the skyrmions from both layers. Depending on the distance between the skyrmions they attract each other sufficiently to achieve a bound state. We also analyze their dynamics when an electric current is applied in a unique layer and we determine how the bound-state nucleation depend…
Magnetic skyrmions are topological magnetic spin structures exhibiting particle-like behaviour. They are of strong interest from a fundamental viewpoint and for application, where they have potential to act as information carriers in future low-power computing technologies. Importantly, skyrmions have high physical stability because of topological protection. However, they have potential to deform according to their local energy environment. Here we demonstrate that, in regions of high exchange energy density, skyrmions may exhibit such extreme deformation that spontaneous merging with nearest…
Antiferromagnets are promising materials for future spintronic applications due to their unique properties including zero stray fields, robustness versus external magnetic fields and ultrafast dynamics, which have attracted extensive interest in recent years. In this work, we investigate the dynamics of isolated skyrmions in an antiferromagnetic nanotrack with a voltage-gated region. It is found that the skyrmion can be jointly controlled by the driving current and the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy gradient. We further propose a design of logic computing gates based on the manipulatio…
Thin magnetic films with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions are known to host skyrmion crystals, which typically have a hexagonal lattice structure. We investigate skyrmion-lattice configurations in synthetic antiferromagnets, i.e., a bilayer of thin magnetic films that is coupled antiferromagnetically. By means of Monte-Carlo simulations, we find that by tuning the interlayer coupling the skyrmion lattice structure can be tuned from square to hexagonal. We give a simple interpretation for the existence of this transition based on the fact that for synthetic antiferromagnetic coupling the skyr…
Magnetic skyrmions are intriguing topological spin textures that promise future high-density spintronic devices. The creation of magnetic skyrmions has been understood based on the energetics of skyrmions, but the detailed dynamic process of the skyrmion creation remains unclear. Here topological evolution in conversion from uneven domains to Néel-skyrmions is investigated using micromagnetic simulations. We find that, rather than the overall topological charge, annihilation of novel topological defects, i.e., recently suggested domain wall skyrmions, dominantly govern the skyrmion creation pr…
The two-dimensional Heisenberg exchange model with out-of-plane anisotropy and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is employed to investigate the lifetime and stability of antiferromagnetic (AFM) skyrmions as a function of temperature and external magnetic field. An isolated AFM skyrmion is metastable at zero temperature in a certain parameter range set by two boundaries separating the skyrmion state from the uniform AFM phase and a stripe domain phase. The distribution of the energy barriers for the AFM skyrmion decay into the uniform AFM state complements the zero-temperature stability diagr…
Magnetic skyrmions are the self-organized topological spin textures behaving like particles. Because of their fast creation and typically long lifetime, experimental verification of skyrmion's creation/annihilation processes has been challenging. Here we successfully track skyrmions dynamics in defect-introduced Co9Zn9Mn2, by using pump-probe Lorentz transmission electron microscope. Following the nanosecond-photothermal excitation, we resolve 160-nm-skyrmion's proliferation at <1 ns, contraction at 5 ns, drift from 10 ns to 4 microsecond and coalescence at 5 microsecond. These motions relay t…
