We first formulate an inverse problem for a linear fractional Lamé system. We determine the Lamé parameters from exterior partial measurements of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We further study an inverse obstacle problem as well as an inverse problem for a nonlinear fractional Lamé system. Our arguments are based on the unique continuation property for the fractional operator as well as the associated Runge approximation property.
We study an inverse problem for fractional elasticity. In analogy to the classical problem of linear elasticity, we consider the unique recovery of the Lamé parameters associated to a linear, isotropic fractional elasticity operator from fractional Dirichlet-to-Neumann data. In our analysis we make use of a fractional matrix Schrödinger equation via a generalization of the so-called Liouville reduction, a technique classically used in the study of the scalar conductivity equation. We conclude that unique recovery is possible if the Lamé parameters agree and are constant in the exterior, and th…
Eringen's model is one of the most popular theories in nonlocal elasticity. It has been applied to many practical situations with the objective of removing the anomalous stress concentrations around geometric shape singularities, which appear when the local modelling is used. Despite the great popularity of Eringen's model in mechanical engineering community, even the most basic questions such as the existence and uniqueness of solutions have been rarely considered in the research literature for this model. In this work we focus on precisely these questions, proving that the model is in genera…
In this note we treat the equations of fractional elasticity. After establishing well-posedness, we show a compactness result related to the theory of homogenization. For this, a previous result in (abstract) homogenization theory of evolutionary equations has to be improved. The approach also permits the consideration of non-local operators (in time and space).
We provide operator-norm convergence estimates for solutions to a time-dependent equation of fractional elasticity in one spatial dimension, with rapidly oscillating coefficients that represent the material properties of a viscoelastic composite medium. Assuming periodicity in the coefficients, we prove operator-norm convergence estimates for an operator fibre decomposition obtained by applying to the original fractional elasticity problem the Fourier--Laplace transform in time and Gelfand transform in space. We obtain estimates on each fibre that are uniform in the quasimomentum of the decomp…
We address the questions (P1), (P2) asked in Kirchheim-Müller-Šverák (2003) concerning the structure of the Rank-$1$ convex hull of a submanifold $\mathcal{K}_1\subset M^{3\times 2}$ that is related to weak solutions of the two by two system of Lagrangian equations of elasticity studied by DiPerna (1985) with one entropy augmented. This system serves as a model problem for higher order systems for which there are only finitely many entropies. The Rank-$1$ convex hull is of interest in the study of solutions via convex integration: the Rank-$1$ convex hull needs to be sufficiently non-trivial f…
This paper concerns with a family of elliptic systems of linear elasticity with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, arising in the theory of homogenization. We establish uniform optimal regularity estimates for solutions of Neumann problems in a bounded Lipschitz domain with $L^2$ boundary data. The proof relies on a boundary Korn inequality for solutions of systems of linear elasticity and uses a large-scale Rellich estimate obtained in \cite{Shen-2016}.
We present the analytical formulation and the finite element solution of a fractional-order nonlocal continuum model of a Euler-Bernoulli beam. Employing consistent definitions for the fractional-order kinematic relations, the governing equations and the associated boundary conditions are derived based on variational principles. Remarkably, the fractional-order nonlocal model gives rise to a self-adjoint and positive-definite system accepting a unique solution. Further, owing to the difficulty in obtaining analytical solutions to this boundary value problem, a finite element model for the frac…
We introduce the study of isolated singularities for a semilinear equation involving the fractional Laplacian. In conformal geometry, it is equivalent to the study of singular metrics with constant fractional curvature. Our main ideas are: first, to set the problem into a natural geometric framework, and second, to perform some kind of phase portrait study for this non-local ODE.
This study presents the analytical and finite element formulation of a geometrically nonlinear and fractional-order nonlocal model of an Euler-Bernoulli beam. The finite nonlocal strains in the Euler-Bernoulli beam are obtained from a frame-invariant and dimensionally consistent fractional-order (nonlocal) continuum formulation. The finite fractional strain theory provides a positive definite formulation that results in a mathematically well-posed formulation which is consistent across loading and boundary conditions. The governing equations and the corresponding boundary conditions of the geo…
In this paper, we consider a coupled system of mixed hyperbolic-parabolic type which describes the Biot consolidation model in poro-elasticity. We establish a local Carleman estimate for Biot consilidation system. Using this estimate, we prove the uniqueness and a Hölder stability in determining on the one hand a physical parameter arising in connection with secondary consolidation effects $λ^*$ and on the other hand the two spatially varying density by a single measurement of solution over $ω\times (0, T)$, where $T>0$ is a sufficiently large time and a suitable subbdomain $ω$ satisfying $\p …
We prove a uniqueness theorem for the obstacle problem for linear equations involving the fractional Laplacian with zero Dirichlet exterior condition. The problem under consideration arises as the limit of some logistic-type equations. Our result extends (and slightly strengthens) the known corresponding results for the classical Laplace operator with zero boundary condition. Our proof, as compared with the known proof for the classical Laplace operator, is entirely new, and is based on the probabilistic potential theory. Its advantage is that it may be applied to a wide class of integro-diffe…

In this paper we study an inverse problem for fractional anisotropic conductivity. Our nonlocal operator is based on the well-developed theory of nonlocal vector calculus, and differs substantially from other generalizations of the classical anisotropic conductivity operator obtained spectrally. We show that the anisotropic conductivity matrix can be recovered uniquely from fractional Dirichlet-to-Neumann data up to a natural gauge. Our analysis makes use of techniques recently developed for the study of the isotropic fractional elasticity equation, and generalizes them to the case of non-sepa…
We analyze the $Γ$-convergence of sequences of free-discontinuity functionals arising in the modeling of linear elastic solids with surface discontinuities, including phenomena as fracture, damage, or material voids. We prove compactness with respect to $Γ$-convergence and represent the $Γ$-limit in an integral form defined on the space of generalized special functions of bounded deformation ($GSBD^p$). We identify the integrands in terms of asymptotic cell formulas and prove a non-interaction property between bulk and surface contributions. Eventually, we investigate sequences of correspondin…
This paper is concerned with the existence of positive solutions for a fractional population model with the homogeneous Dirichlet condition on the exterior of a bounded domain. The approach is based on the sub-super solutions method. Our results generalize some recent results in the literature.
In this article we continue our study of higher Sobolev regularity of flexible convex integration solutions to differential inclusions arising from applications in materials sciences. We present a general framework yielding higher Sobolev regularity for Dirichlet problems with affine data in $\text{int}(K^{lc})$. This allows us to simultaneously deal with linear and nonlinear differential inclusion problems. We show that the derived higher integrability and differentiability exponent has a lower bound, which is independent of the position of the Dirichlet boundary data in $\text{int}(K^{lc})$.…
We classify all exactly stress-free solutions to the cubic-to-trigonal phase transformation within the geometrically linearized theory of elasticity, showing that only simple laminates and crossing-twin structures can occur. In particular, we prove that although this transformation is closely related to the cubic-to-orthorhombic phase transformation, all its solutions are rigid. The argument relies on a combination of the Saint-Venant compatibility conditions together with the underlying nonlinear relations and non-convexity conditions satisfied by the strain components.
We study the inverse electrostatic and elasticity problems associated with Poisson and Navier equations. The uniqueness of solutions of these problems is proved for piecewise constant electric charge and internal stress distributions having a checkered structure: they are constant on rectangular blocks. Such distributions appear naturally in practical applications. We also discuss computational challenges arising in the numerical implementation of our method.
We study a fractional analogue of a plasma problem arising from physics. Specifically, for a fixed bounded domain $Ω$ we study solutions to the eigenfunction equation \[ (- Δ)^s u = λ(u- γ)_+ \] with $u \equiv 0$ on $\partial Ω$.
We consider the following fractional semilinear Neumann problem on a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq2$, $$\begin{cases} (-\varepsilonΔ)^{1/2}u+u=u^{p},&\hbox{in}~Ω,\\ \partial_νu=0,&\hbox{on}~\partialΩ,\\ u>0,&\hbox{in}~Ω, \end{cases}$$ where $\varepsilon>0$ and $1<p<(n+1)/(n-1)$. This is the fractional version of the semilinear Neumann problem studied by Lin--Ni--Takagi in the late 80's. The problem arises by considering steady states of the Keller--Segel model with nonlocal chemical concentration diffusion. Using the semigroup language for the extension method and variat…
For two neighbouring stiff inclusions, the stress, which is the gradient of a solution to the Lamé system of linear elasticity, may exhibit singular behavior as the distance between these two inclusions becomes arbitrarily small. In this paper, a family of stress concentration factors, which determine whether the stress will blow up or not, are accurately constructed in the presence of the generalized $m$-convex inclusions in all dimensions. We then use these stress concentration factors to establish the optimal upper and lower bounds on the stress blow-up rates in any dimension and meanwhile …
We investigate a class of quasi-linear nonlocal problems, including as a particular case semi-linear problems involving the fractional Laplacian and arising in the framework of continuum mechanics, phase transition phenomena, population dynamics and game theory. Under different growth assumptions on the reaction term, we obtain various existence as well as finite multiplicity results by means of variational and topological methods and, in particular, arguments from Morse theory.
In this article a theoretical framework for problems involving fractional equations of hyperbolic type arising in the theory of viscoelasticity is presented. Based on the Galerkin method, a variational problem of the fractionary viscoelasticity is studied. An appropriate functional setting is introduced in order to establish the existence, uniqueness and a priori estimates for weak solutions. This framework is developed in close concordance with important physical quantities of the theory of viscoelasticity

We consider Riesz' fractional gradient and a truncated version of it. The equations of nonlocal nonlinear elasticity based on those gradients are known. We perform a formal linearization and arrive at the equations of linear elasticity based on those nonlocal operators. We prove the existence of solutions of the linear equations, notably, by a nonlocal version of Korn's inequality. Finally, we show that the linearizations obtained are particular cases of Eringen's model with singular kernels.
We define the fractional powers $L^s=(-a^{ij}(x)\partial_{ij})^s$, $0 < s < 1$, of nondivergence form elliptic operators $L=-a^{ij}(x)\partial_{ij}$ in bounded domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, under minimal regularity assumptions on the coefficients $a^{ij}(x)$ and on the boundary $\partialΩ$. We show that these fractional operators appear in several applications such as fractional Monge--Ampère equations, elasticity, and finance. The solution $u$ to the nonlocal Poisson problem $$\begin{cases} (-a^{ij}(x) \partial_{ij})^su = f&\hbox{in}~Ω\\ u=0&\hbox{on}~\partialΩ\end{cases}$$ is characterized…
In this paper, we apply the constraint energy minimizing generalized multiscale finite element method (CEM-GMsFEM) to first solving a nonlinear poroelasticity problem. The arising system consists of a nonlinear pressure equation and a nonlinear stress equation in strain-limiting setting, where strains keep bounded while stresses can grow arbitrarily large. After time discretization of the system, to tackle the nonlinearity, we linearize the resulting equations by Picard iteration. To handle the linearized equations, we employ the CEM-GMsFEM and obtain appropriate offline multiscale basis funct…
We address three related problems in the theory of elasticity, formulated in the framework of double forms: the Saint-Venant compatibility condition, the existence and uniqueness of solutions for equations arising in incompatible elasticity, and the existence of stress potentials. The scope of this work is for manifolds with boundary of arbitrary dimension, having constant sectional curvature. The central analytical machinery is the regular ellipticity of a boundary-value problem for a bilaplacian operator, and its consequences, which were developed in [KL21]. One of the novelties of this work…
