A plane curve is called strange if its tangent line at any smooth point passes through a fixed point, called the strange point. In this paper, we study $\mathbb{A}^1$-curves on the complement of a rational strange curve of degree $p$ in characteristic $p$. We prove the connectedness of the moduli spaces of $\mathbb{A}^1$-curves with given degree, classify their irreducible components, and exhibit the inseparable $\mathbb{A}^1$-connectedness via the $\mathbb{A}^1$-curves parameterized by each irreducible component. The key to these results is the strangeness of all $\mathbb{A}^1$-curves. As an application, in every characteristic we construct explicit covering families of $\mathbb{A}^1$-curves, whose total spaces are smooth along large numbers of cusps on each general fiber.
We study Le Potier's strange duality conjecture on a rational surface. We focus on the case involving the moduli space of rank 2 sheaves with trivial first Chern class and second Chern class 2, and the moduli space of 1-dimensional sheaves with determinant $L$ and Euler characteristic 0. We show the conjecture for this case is true under some suitable conditions on $L$, which applies to $L$ ample on any Hirzebruch surface $Σ_e:=\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^1}\oplus\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^1}(e))$ except for $e=1$. When $e=1$, our result applies to $L=aG+bF$ with $b\geq a+[a/2]$, where $F$…
We study Le Potier's strange duality conjecture on a rational surface. We focus on the strange duality map $SD_{c_n^r,L}$ which involves the moduli space of rank $r$ sheaves with trivial first Chern class and second Chern class $n$, and the moduli space of 1-dimensional sheaves with determinant $L$ and Euler characteristic 0. We show there is an exact sequence relating the map $SD_{c_r^r,L}$ to $SD_{c^{r-1}_{r},L}$ and $SD_{c_r^r,L\otimes K_X}$ for all $r\geq1$ under some conditions on $X$ and $L$ which applies to a large number of cases on $\p^2$ or Hirzebruch surfaces . Also on $\mathbb{P}^2…
Over the projective plane and at most two-step blowups of Hirzebruch surfaces, where there are strong full exceptional sequences of line bundles, we obtain foundational results about Gaeta resolutions of coherent sheaves by these line bundles. Under appropriate conditions, we show the locus of semistable sheaves not admitting Gaeta resolutions has codimension at least 2. We then study Le Potier's strange duality conjecture. Over these surfaces, for two orthogonal numerical classes where one has rank one and the other has sufficiently positive first Chern class, we show that the strange morphis…
Let $\mhu$ be the moduli space of semi-stable pure sheaves of class $u$ on a smooth complex projective surface $X$. We specify $u=(0,L,χ(u)=0),$ i.e. sheaves in $u$ are of dimension $1$. There is a natural morphism $π$ from the moduli space $\mhu$ to the linear system $\ls$. We study a series of determinant line bundles $\lcn$ on $\mhu$ via $π.$ Denote $g_L$ the arithmetic genus of curves in $\ls.$ For any $X$ and $g_L\leq0$, we compute the generating function $Z^r(t)=\sum_{n}h^0(\mhu,\lcn)t^n$. For $X$ being $\mathbb{P}^2$ or $\mathbb{P}(\mo_{\pone}\oplus\mo_{\pone}(-e))$ with $e=0,1$, we com…
K-theoretic Donaldson invariants are holomorphic Euler characteristics of determinant line bundles on moduli spaces of sheaves on surfaces. We compute generating functions of K-theoretic Donaldson invariants on the projective plane and rational ruled surfaces. We apply this result to prove some cases of Le Potier's strange duality.
K-theoretic Donaldson invariants are holomorphic Euler characteristics of determinant line bundles on moduli spaces of rank 2 sheaves on surfaces. We develop an algorithm which determines the generating functions of K-theoretic Donaldson invariants on the projective plane and more generally rational surfaces, and apply it in many cases to get explicit formulas. We relate the results to Le Potier's strange duality conjecture.
We construct infinitesimal deformations on an open domain of a smooth projective surface given by a complement of plumbings of disjoint linear chains of smooth rational curves. We show that the infinitesimal deformations are not small deformations, that is, they change the complex structure away from the boundary of the domain.
In this note we extend some of the results of a previous paper \url{arXiv:math/0511593} to algebraically closed fields of finite characteristic. In particular, we show that there is an explicit expression in $n$ and $d$ which is divisible by the prime to $p$ part of the order of the the automorphism group of a smooth degree $d$ hypersurface $\subset \mathbb{P}^n_k$ for $k$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$.
We classify closed curves isomorphic to the affine line in the complement of a smooth rational projective plane conic Q. Over a field of characteristic zero, we show that up to the action of the subgroup of the Cremona group of the plane consisting of birational endomorphisms restricting to biregular auto-morphisms outside Q, there are exactly two such lines: the restriction of a smooth conic osculating Q at a rational point and the restriction of the tangent line to Q at a rational point. In contrast, we give examples illustrating the fact that over fields of positive characteristic, there ex…
In this paper, we consider rational cuspidal plane curves having exactly two cusps whose complements have logarithmic Kodaira dimension two. We classify such curves with the property that the strict transforms of them via the minimal embedded resolution of the cusps have maximal self-intersection number.
In this note, we consider rational cuspidal plane curves having exactly one cusp whose complements have logarithmic Kodaira dimension two. We classify such curves with the property that the strict transforms of them via the minimal embedded resolution of the cusp have the maximal self-intersection number. We show that the curves given by the classification coincide with those constructed by Orevkov.
To classify complex rational cuspidal curves $E\subseteq \mathbb{P}^2$ it remains to classify the ones with complement of log general type, i.e. the ones for which $κ(K_X+D)=2$, where $(X,D)$ is a log resolution of $(\mathbb{P}^2,E)$. It is conjectured that $κ(K_X+\frac{1}{2}D)=-\infty$ and hence $\mathbb{P}^2\setminus E$ is $\mathbb{C}^{**}$-fibered, where $\mathbb{C}^{**}=\mathbb{C}^1\setminus\{0,1\}$, or $-(K_X+\frac{1}{2}D)$ is ample on some minimal model of $(X,\frac{1}{2}D)$. Here we classify, up to a projective equivalence, those rational cuspidal curves for which the complement is $\ma…
The main purpose of this paper is to show that the mixed Hodge polynomial of the ``space of equations'' for smooth complete intersections of given multidegree in $\mathbb{C} P^n$ is divisible by the mixed Hodge polynomial of the group $\mathrm{GL}_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, the quotient being the mixed Hodge polynomial of the corresponding quotient space. As a by-product of the method used in the proof, we obtain expressions divisible by the order the automorphism group of any smooth projective hypersurface of given dimension and degree
Let M be the moduli space of stable bundles of rank 2 and with fixed determinant \mathcal{L} of degree d on a smooth projective curve C of genus g>= 2. When g=3 and d is even, we prove, for any point [W]\in M, there is a minimal rational curve passing through [W], which is not a Hecke curve. This complements a theorem of Xiaotao Sun.
We study the complement problem in projective spaces $\mathbb{P}^n$ over any algebraically closed field: If $H, H' \subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$ are irreducible hypersurfaces of degree $d$ such that the complements $\mathbb{P}^n \setminus H$, $\mathbb{P}^n \setminus H'$ are isomorphic, are the hypersurfaces $H$, $H'$ isomorphic? For $n = 2$, the answer is positive if $d\leq 7$ and there are counterexamples when $d = 8$. In contrast we provide counterexamples for all $n, d \geq 3$ with $(n, d) \neq (3, 3)$. Moreover, we show that the complement problem has an affirmative answer for $d = 2$ and give p…
We determine and list all possible configurations of singular fibres on rational elliptic surfaces in characteristic three. In total, we find that 267 distinct configurations exist. This result complements Miranda and Persson's classification in characteristic zero, and Lang's classification in characteristic two.
We compute the presentations of fundamental groups of the complements of a class of rational cuspidal projective plane curves classified by Flenner, Zaidenberg, Fenske and Saito. We use the Zariski-Van Kampen algorithm and exploit the Cremona transformations used in the construction of these curves. We simplify and study these group presentations so obtained and determine if they are abelian, finite or big, i.e. if they contain free non-abelian subgroups. We also study the quotients of these groups to some extend.
We consider the class of quasiprojective varieties admitting a dominant morphism onto a curve with negative Euler characteristic. The existence of such a morphism is a property of the fundamental group. We show that for a variety in this class the number of maps onto a hyperbolic curve or surfaces can be estimated in terms of the numerical invariants of the fundamental group. We use this estimates to find the number of biholomorphic automorphisms of complements to some arrangements of lines.
We consider fibrations by affine lines on smooth affine surfaces obtained as complements of smooth rational curves $B$ in smooth projective surfaces $X$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We observe that except for two exceptions, these surfaces $X \setminus B$ admit infinitely many families of $\mathbb{A}^1$-fibrations over the projective line with irreducible fibers and a unique singular fiber of arbitrarily large multiplicity. For $\mathbb{A}^1$-fibrations over the affine line, we give a new and essentially self-contained proof that the set of equivalence cla…
We prove that the Poincare' polynomial of the moduli space of smooth genus 4 curves is 1+t^2+t^4+t^5. We show this by producing a stratification of the space, such that all strata are geometric quotients of complements of discriminants.
For a smooth plane cubic $B$, we count curves $C$ of degree $d$ such that the normalizations of $C\backslash B$ are isomorphic to $\Bbb A^1$, for $d\leq7$ (for $d=7$ under some assumption). We also count plane rational quartic curves intersecting $B$ at only one point.
We construct a monomorphism of the De Rham complex of scalar multivalued meromorphic forms on the projective line, holomorphic on the complement to a finite set of points, to the chain complex of the Lie algebra of $sl_2$-valued algebraic functions on the same complement with coefficients in a tensor product of contragradient Verma modules over the affine Lie algebra $\hat{sl}_2$. We show that the existence of singular vectors in the Verma modules (the Malikov-Feigin-Fuchs singular vectors) is reflected in the new relations between the cohomology classes of logarithmic differential forms.
Let $Σ$ be a smooth projective surface, let $f' : S' \to Σ$ be a double cover of $Σ$ and let $μ: S \to S'$ be the canonical resolution. Put $f = f'\circμ$. An irreducible curve $C$ on $Σ$ is said to be a splitting curve with respect to $f$ if $f^*C$ is of the form $C^+ + C^- + E$, where $C^- = σ_f^*C^+$, $σ_f$ being the covering transformation of $f$ and all irreducible components of $E$ are contained in the exceptional set of $μ$. In this article, we show that a kind of "reciprocity" of splitting curves holds for a certain pair of curves on rational ruled surfaces. As an application, we consi…
Let $E\subseteq \mathbb{P}^2$ be a complex curve homeomorphic to the projective line. The Negativity Conjecture asserts that the Kodaira-Iitaka dimension of $K_X+\frac{1}{2}D$, where $(X,D)\to (\mathbb{P}^{2},E)$ is a minimal log resolution, is negative. We prove structure theorems for curves satisfying this conjecture and we finish their classification up to a projective equivalence by describing the ones whose complement admits no $\mathbb{C}^{**}$-fibration. As a consequence, we show that they satisfy the Strong Rigidity Conjecture of Flenner-Zaidenberg. The proofs are based on the almost m…
