We study a stochastic control problem for continuous multidimensional martingales with fixed quadratic variation. In a radially symmetric environment, we are able to find an explicit solution to the control problem and find an optimal strategy. We show that it is optimal to switch between two strategies, depending only on the radius of the controlled process. The optimal strategies correspond to purely radial and purely tangential motion. It is notable that the value function exhibits smooth fit even when switching to tangential motion, where the radius of the optimal process is deterministic. Under sufficient regularity on the cost function, we prove optimality via viscosity solutions of a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. We extend the results to cost functions that may become infinite at the origin. Extra care is required to solve the control problem in this case, since it is not clear how to define the optimal strategy with deterministic radius at the origin. Our results generalise some problems recently considered in Stochastic Portfolio Theory and Martingale Optimal Transport.
We determine the optimal structure of couplings for the \emph{Martingale transport problem} between radially symmetric initial and terminal laws $μ, ν$ on $\R^d$ and show the uniqueness of optimizer. Here optimality means that such solutions will minimize the functional $\E |X-Y|^p$ where $0<p \leq 1$, and the dimension $d$ is arbitrary.
This paper aims to study a new class of integral equations called backward doubly stochastic Volterra integral equations (BDSVIEs, for short). The notion of symmetrical martingale solutions (SM-solutions, for short) is introduced for BDSVIEs. And the existence and uniqueness theorem for BDSVIEs in the sense of SM-solutions is established.
We give a class of Fourier multipliers with non-symmetric symbols and explicit norm bounds on $L^p$ spaces by using the stochastic calculus of Lévy processes and Burkholder-Wang estimates for differentially subordinate martingales.
We study the isoperimetric problem for the radially symmetric measures. Applying the spherical symmetrization procedure and variational arguments we reduce this problem to a one-dimensional ODE of the second order. Solving numerically this ODE we get an empirical description of isoperimetric regions of the planar radially symmetric exponential power laws. We also prove some isoperimetric inequalities for the log-convex measures. We show, in particular, that the symmetric balls of large size are isoperimetric sets for strictly log-convex and radially symmetric measures. In addition, we establis…
The objective of this paper is to study the local time and Tanaka formula of symmetric $G$-martingales. We introduce the local time of $G$-martingales and show that they belong to $G$-expectation space $L_{G}^{2}(Ω_{T})$. The bicontinuous modification of local time is obtained. We finally give the Tanaka formula for convex functions of $G$-martingales.
We give a representation of the fractional integral for symmetric Markovian semigroups as the projection of martingale transforms and prove the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev(HLS) inequality based on this representation. The proof rests on a new inequality for a fractional Littlewood-Paley $g$-function.
The objective of this paper is to derive a representation of symmetric G-martingales as stochastic integrals with respect to the G-Brownian motion. For this end, we first study some extensions of stochastic calculus with respect to G-martingales under the sublinear expectation spaces.
Let $G$ be a Lie Group with a left invariant connection such that its connection function is skew-symmetric. Our main goal is to show a version of Pluzhnikov's Theorem for this kind of connection. To this end, we use the stochastic logarithm. More exactly, the stochastic logarithm gives characterizations for Brownian motions and Martingales in $G$, and these characterzations are used to prove Pluzhnikov's Theorem.
This letter derives some new exponential bounds for discrete time, real valued, conditionally symmetric martingales with bounded jumps. The new bounds are extended to conditionally symmetric sub/ supermartingales, and they are compared to some existing bounds.
In this paper we explain that the natural filtration of a continuous Hunt process is continuous, and show that martingales over such a filtration are continuous. We further establish a martingale representation theorem for a class of continuous Hunt processes under certain technical conditions. In particular we establish the martingale representation theorem for the martingale parts of (reflecting) symmetric diffusions in a bounded domain with a continuous boundary. Together with an approach put forward in Lyons et al(2009), our martingale representation theorem is then applied to the study of…
We establish a quantitative bound on the entropy jump associated to the sum of independent, identically distributed (IID) radially symmetric random vectors having dimension greater than one. Following the usual approach, we first consider the analogous problem of Fisher information dissipation, and then integrate along the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup to obtain an entropic inequality. In a departure from previous work, we appeal to a result by Desvillettes and Villani on entropy production associated to the Landau equation. This obviates strong regularity assumptions, such as presence of a spe…
Let $(\mathcal{F}_n)_{n\ge 0}$ be the standard dyadic filtration on $[0,1]$. Let $\mathbb{E}_{\mathcal{F}_n}$ be the conditional expectation from $ L_1=L_1[0,1]$ onto $\mathcal{F} _n$, $n\ge 0$, and let $\mathbb{E}_{\mathcal{F} _{-1}} =0$. We present the sharp estimate for the distribution function of the martingale transform $T$ defined by \begin{align*} Tf=\sum_{m=0}^\infty \left( \mathbb{E}_{\mathcal{F}_{2m}} f-\mathbb{E}_{\mathcal{F}_{2m-1}}f \right), ~f\in L_1, \end{align*} in terms of the classical Calderón operator. As an application, for a given symmetric function space $E$ on $[0,1]$,…
Given an initial (resp., terminal) probability measure $μ$ (resp., $ν$) on $\mathbb{R}^d$, we characterize those optimal stopping times $τ$ that maximize or minimize the functional $\mathbb{E} |B_0 - B_τ|^α$, $α> 0$, where $(B_t)_t$ is Brownian motion with initial law $B_0\sim μ$ and with final distribution --once stopped at $τ$-- equal to $B_τ\sim ν$. The existence of such stopping times is guaranteed by Skorohod-type embeddings of probability measures in "subharmoic order" into Brownian motion. This problem is equivalent to an optimal mass transport problem with certain constraints, namely t…
The existence of global nonnegative martingale solutions to a stochastic cross-diffusion system for an arbitrary but finite number of interacting population species is shown. The random influence of the environment is modeled by a multiplicative noise term. The diffusion matrix is generally neither symmetric nor positive definite, but it possesses a quadratic entropy structure. This structure allows us to work in a Hilbert space framework and to apply a stochastic Galerkin method. The existence proof is based on energy-type estimates, the tightness criterion of Brzeźniak and co-workers, and Ja…
We consider the generators $L_k$ of Heckman-Opdam diffusion processes in the compact and non-compact case in $N$ dimensions for root systems of type $A$ and $B$, with a multiplicity function of the form $k=κk_0$ with some fixed value $k_0$ and a varying constant $κ\in\,[0,\infty[$. Using elementary symmetric functions, we present polynomials which are simultaneous eigenfunctions of the $L_k$ for all $κ\in\,]0,\infty[$. This leads to martingales associated with the Heckman-Opdam diffusions $ (X_{t,1},\ldots,X_{t,N})_{t\ge0}$. As our results extend to the freezing case $κ=\infty$ with a determin…
We consider random normal matrix and planar symplectic ensembles, which can be interpreted as two-dimensional Coulomb gases having determinantal and Pfaffian structures, respectively. For general radially symmetric potentials, we derive the asymptotic expansions of the log-partition functions up to and including the $O(1)$-terms as the number $N$ of particles increases. Notably, our findings stress that the formulas of the $O(\log N)$- and $O(1)$-terms in these expansions depend on the connectivity of the droplet. For random normal matrix ensembles, our formulas agree with the predictions prop…
We study the Gromov waist in the sense of $t$-neighborhoods for measures in the Euclidean space, motivated by the famous theorem of Gromov about the waist of radially symmetric Gaussian measures. In particular, it turns our possible to extend Gromov's original result to the case of not necessarily radially symmetric Gaussian measure. We also provide examples of measures having no $t$-neighborhood waist property, including a rather wide class of compactly supported radially symmetric measures and their maps into the Euclidean space of dimension at least 2. We use a simpler form of Gromov's panc…
The existence of global nonnegative martingale solutions to a cross-diffusion system of Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto type with multiplicative noise is proven. The model describes the segregation dynamics of populations with an arbitrary number of species. The diffusion matrix is generally neither symmetric nor positive semidefinite, which excludes standard methods. Instead, the existence proof is based on the entropy structure of the model, approximated by a Wong-Zakai argument, and on suitable higher moment estimates and fractional time regularity. In the case without self-diffusion, the lack …
The existence of a global martingale solution to a cross-diffusion system with multiplicative Wiener noise in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions is shown. The model describes the dynamics of population densities of different species due to segregation cross-diffusion effects. The diffusion matrix is generally neither symmetric nor positive semidefinite. This difficulty is overcome by exploiting the Rao entropy structure. The existence proof uses a stochastic Galerkin method, uniform estimates from the Rao entropy inequality, and the Skorokhod--Jakubowski theorem. Furthermore, an…
We study Bessel processes on Weyl chambers of types A and B on $\mathbb R^N$. Using elementary symmetric functions, we present several space-time-harmonic functions and thus martingales for these processes $(X_t)_{t\ge0}$ which are independent from one parameter of these processes. As a consequence, $p(y):=\mathbb E(\prod_{i=1}^N (y-X_t^i))$ can be expressed via classical orthogonal polynomials. Such formulas on characteristic polynomials admit interpretations in random matrix theory where they are partially known by Diaconis, Forrester, and Gamburd.
We study $β$-Jacobi diffusion processes on alcoves in $\mathbb R^N$, depending on 3 parameters. Using elementary symmetric functions, we present space-time-harmonic functions and martingales for these processes $(X_t)_{t\ge0}$ which are independent from one parameter. This leads to a formula for $\mathbb E(\prod_{i=1}^N (y-X_{t,i}))$ in terms of classical Jacobi polynomials. For $t\to\infty$ this yields a corresponding formula for Jacobi ensembles and thus Aomoto's Selberg integral.
