The recently developed refractory multi-principle element alloy (MPEA), AlMo$_{0.5}$NbTa$_{0.5}$TiZr, shows an interesting microstructure with cuboidal precipitates of a disordered phase ($β$, bcc) coherently embedded in an ordered phase ($β'$, B2) matrix, unlike the conventional Ni-based superalloys where the ordered phase ($γ'$, L12) is the precipitate phase and the disordered phase ($γ$, fcc) is the matrix phase. It becomes critical to understand the phase transformation pathway (PTP) leading to this microstructure in order to tailor the microstructure for specific engineering applications. In this study, we first propose a possible PTP leading to the microstructure and employ the phase-field method to simulate microstructural evolution along the PTP. We then explore possible PTPs and materials parameters that lead to an inverted microstructure with the ordered phase being the precipitate phase and the disordered phase being the matrix phase, a microstructure similar to those observed in Ni-based superalloys. We find that in order to maintain the precipitates as highly discrete particles along these PTPs, the volume fraction of the precipitate phase needs to be smaller than that of the matrix phase and the elastic stiffness of the precipitate phase should be higher than that of the matrix phase.
Mechanical alloying (MA) has been used to fabricate the Co2FeAl Heusler alloy with a nanocrystalline structure. The formation mechanism of the alloy has been investigated. Rietveld analysis showed that all samples that were milled for more than 15 hours had an L21 structure with a space group of Fm3m. The crystallite size and internal strain of the samples were calculated using the Williamson-Hall equation. With mechanical alloying of up to 20 hours the crystallite size of Co2FeAl increased, after which the crystallite size started to decrease. In contrast, internal strain first decreased duri…
In this study atom probe tomography was used to investigate the microstructure of AA2198 (Al-1.35Cu-3.55Li-0.29Mg-0.08Ag) over a range of ageing conditions to examine the evolution of phases in the alloy, in particular aiming to reveal the nucleation mechanism of the strengthening T1 phase, which has been under debate for decades. T1 precursor phases were observed from early ageing, a significant number of which were connected to solute-enriched dislocations. Ag and Mg segregation to T1 interfaces was convincingly observed when the plates were oriented perpendicular to the probing direction, w…
The effect of ultrasonic melting processing on three-dimensional architecture of intermetallic phases and pores in two multicomponent cast Al-5.0Cu-0.6Mn-0.5 Fe alloys is characterized using conventional microscopy and synchrotron X-ray microtomography. The two alloys are found to contain intermetallic phases such as Al15(FeMn)3Cu2, Al7Cu2Fe, Al3(FeMn), Al6(FeMn), and Al2Cu that have complex networked morphology in 3D. The application of USP in alloys can obtained refined and equiaxed microstructures. The grain size of 0.5Fe and 1.0 Fe alloys is greatly decreased from 16.9 m, 15.8 m without US…
Due to the vast compositional space of multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs), the rational design of MPEAs for optimized microstructures is difficult. Therefore, a high-throughput first-principles study of Mo-V-Nb-Ti-Zr, a refractory MPEA, was conducted to gain insights into the underlying microstructures. Using Monte-Carlo simulations powered by cluster expansion, we uncover the principles governing the MPEA's microstructures across a large compositional space that includes non-equiatomic compositions and encompasses the constituent binaries, ternaries, and quaternaries. In the spirit of Hum…
This work demonstrates the development of a strong and ductile medium entropy alloy by employing conventional alloying and thermomechanical processing to induce partial recrystallization (PR) and precipitation strengthening in the microstructure. The combined usage of electron microscopy and atom probe tomography reveals the sequence of microstructural evolution during the process. First, the cold working of homogenized alloy resulted in a highly deformed microstructure. On annealing at 700°C, B2 ordered precipitates heterogeneously nucleate on the highly misoriented sites. These B2 promotes p…
The deformation and fatigue crack nucleation mechanisms were studied by means of slip trace analysis and secondary electron microscopy in a textured AZ31B-O Mg alloy subjected to fully-reversed cyclic deformation at two different cyclic strain semi-amplitudes. Samples were deformed in two orientations leading to symmetric and non-symmetric cyclic stress-strain curves due to the activation of different deformation mechanisms. They were ascertained in longitudinal sections of the specimens, which included a large number of grains (from 1500 to 4500 for each specimen), to obtain statistically sig…
The microstructural evolution of a dissimilar metal weld (DMW) obtained by narrow-gap gas tungsten arc welding (NG-GTAW) was investigated after it was subjected to a post-weld heat treatment (PWHT). The case studied here is a joint between low-alloy steel pipes and a stainless steel steam generator using a nickel based alloy as filler material. The fusion boundary that was the focus of this work was that between the low-alloy steel (2.25Cr-1Mo) and the nickel alloy (alloy 82). The difference in matrix phase and chemical composition between the two alloys leads to a large difference in chemical…
Enhanced mechanical properties and microstructural stability of ultrafine-grained biodegradable Zn-Li-Mn-Mg-Cu alloys produced by rapid solidification and high-pressure torsion
Dimension reduction procedure is the recipe to represent defects in two dimensional dislocation dynamics according to the changes in the geometrical properties of the defects triggered by different conditions such as radiation, high temperature, or pressure. In the present study, this procedure is extended to incorporate further features related to the presence of defects with a special focus on face-centered cubic/body-centered cubic alloys used for diverse engineering purposes. In order to reflect the microstructural state of the alloy on the computational cell of two dimensional dislocation…
We introduce a new phase-field formulation of rapid alloy solidification that quantitatively incorporates nonequilibrium effects at the solid-liquid interface over a very wide range of interface velocities. Simulations identify a new dynamical instability of dendrite tip growth driven by solute trapping at velocities approaching the absolute stability limit. They also reproduce the formation of the widely observed banded microstructures, revealing how this instability triggers transitions between dendritic and microsegregation-free solidification. Predicted band spacings agree quantitatively w…
Further property enhancement of alnico, an attractive near-term, non-rare-earth permanent magnet alloy system, primarily composed of Al, Ni, Co, and Fe, relies on improved morphology control and size refinement of its complex spinodally decomposed nanostructure that forms during heat-treatment. Microstructural and Mechanistic Insights into the Tension-Compression Asymmetry of Rapidly Solidified Fe-Cr Alloys: A Phase Field and Strain Gradient Plasticity Study
Mechanical properties of engineering alloys are strongly correlated to their microstructural length scale. Diffusive insta- bilities of the Mullins-Sekerka type is one of the principal mechanisms through which the scale of the microstructural features are determined during solidification. In contrast to binary systems, in multicomponent alloys with arbitrary interdiffusivities, the growth rate as well as the maximally growing wavelengths characterizing these instabilities depend on the the dynamically selected equilibrium tie-lines and the steady state growth velocity. In this study, we derive…
Effect of cold rolling strain on the microstructural evolution in equimolar MoNbTaTiZr refractory complex concentrated alloy: Comprehensive characterization
The compressive mechanical behavior of a dual phase cobalt alloy (Al$_{14}$Co$_{41}$Cr$_{16}$Fe$_{11}$Ni$_{18}$) is reported in this communication. An uncommon triple yielding phenomenon is observed in the as-cast condition. Microstructural studies suggest that the observed behavior may be due to a stress/strain-induced martensitic phase transformation.
During the directional solidification of peritectic alloys, two stable solid phases (parent and peritectic) grow competitively into a metastable liquid phase of larger impurity content than either solid phase. When the parent or both solid phases are morphologically unstable, i.e., for a small temperature gradient/growth rate ratio ($G/v_p$), one solid phase usually outgrows and covers the other phase, leading to a cellular-dendritic array structure closely analogous to the one formed during monophase solidification of a dilute binary alloy. In contrast, when $G/v_p$ is large enough for both p…
A phase-field formulation is introduced to simulate quantitatively microstructural pattern formation in alloys. The thin-interface limit of this formulation yields a much less stringent restriction on the choice of interface thickness than previous formulations and permits to eliminate non-equilibrium effects at the interface. Dendrite growth simulations with vanishing solid diffusivity show that both the interface evolution and the solute profile in the solid are well resolved.
Three novel precipitation strengthened bcc alloys which exhibit a smooth microstructural gradient with composition have been fabricated in bulk form by induction casting. All three alloys are comprised of a mixture of disordered A2-(Fe, Cr) and L2$_1$-ordered (Ni, Fe)$_{2}$AlTi type phases both as-cast and after long-term annealing at 900 $^{\circ}$C. The ratio of disordered to ordered phase, primary dendrite fraction, and overall microstructural coarseness all decrease as Cr is replaced by Al and Ti. Differences in phase composition are quantified through domain averaged principal component a…
Annealing treatment is an important step of rolling deformation that contributes to microstructural evolution and leads to the significant changes in damping capacity. Damping capacities were analyzed in the parallel to rolling direction at 1 and 10 Hz respectively. It was found that severe plastic deformation at 40 percent reduction has lower damping capacity compared to that of 30 percent and 20 percent reductions respectively. The microstructural results show that the grains of as rolled alloys were changed to almost equiaxed structures after a rolling reduction at 40 percent reduction.
Strengthening in age-hardenable alloys is mainly achieved through nano-scale precipitates whose formation paths from the atomic-scale, solute-enriched entities are rarely analyzed and understood in a directly-verifiable way. Here, we discover a pathway for the earliest-stage precipitation in Al-Mg-Si alloys: solute clustering leading to three successive variants of FCC clusters, followed by the formation of non-FCC $GP$-$zones$. The clusters, which originally assume a spherical morphology ($C1$), evolve into elongated clusters and orient themselves on $\{111\}_{Al}$ ($C2$) and subsequently on …
One usual way to strengthen a metal is to add alloying elements and to control the size and the density of the precipitates obtained. However, precipitation in multicomponent alloys can take complex pathways depending on the relative diffusivity of solute atoms and on the relative driving forces involved. In Al-Zr-Sc alloys, atomic simulations based on first-principle calculations combined with various complementary experimental approaches working at different scales reveal a strongly inhomogeneous structure of the precipitates: owing to the much faster diffusivity of Sc compared with Zr in th…
Modern engineering alloys have bespoke microstructures, where features such as precipitates are used to control properties. In many Ni-based alloys, carbo-nitride precipitates are introduced to strengthen and improve performance. These precipitates can be distributed throughout the microstructure and niobium rich carbides are often found at grain boundaries. In this work, we used combined energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to characterise the population of these precipitates. Processing of the EDS signal is used to label the Mo/Nb-rich precip…
The effects of ageing at 800 $^\circ$C on the properties of the IRIS alloy (Ti$_{49.9}$Al$_{48}$W$_2$B$_{0.1}$) are studied. The initial microstructure of this alloy densified by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) is mainly composed of lamellar colonies which are surrounded by $γ$ grains. The evolutions of the alloy strength and creep resistance resulting from this ageing treatment are measured by the related mechanical tests. The microstructural changes are investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopies and by X-ray diffraction. The main structural evolutions consist in a shrinkage…
Microstructural features and mechanical properties of an Al-Mg-Si alloy processed by high-pressure torsion have been investigated using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, three-dimensional atom probe, tensile tests and microhardness measurements. It is shown that HPT processing of the Al-Mg-Si alloy leads to a much stronger grain size refinement than of pure aluminium (down to 100 nm). Moreover, massive segregation of alloying elements along grain boundaries is observed. This nanostructure exhibits a yield stress even two times higher than that after a standard T6 heat treatm…
A fundamental question in the study of ferromagnetic shap ememory alloys is the nature of magnetoelastic coupling and the extent it drives the structural transformation. This question also holds the key to developing new and optimized alloys that combine high strains at low switching field. In the present study it is shown that the reconfiguration of the micromagnetic structure is enslaved to and follows the martensitic transformation in these alloys using the NiMnGa and FePd alloy systems. This is determined by developing a new, high speed electronic method to study the temperature dependence…
Defects and microstructural features spanning the atomic level to the microscale play deterministic roles in the expressed properties of materials. Yet studies of material evolution in response to environmental stimuli most often correlate resulting performance with one dominant microstructural feature only. Here, the dynamic evolution of swelling in a series of Ni-based concentrated solid solution alloys under high-temperature irradiation exposure is observed using continuous, in situ measurements of thermoelastic properties in bulk specimens. Unlike traditional evaluation techniques which ac…
The kinetic pathways resulting from the formation of coherent L12-ordered y'-precipitates in the g-matrix (f.c.c.) of Ni-7.5 Al-8.5 Cr at.% and Ni-5.2 Al-14.2 Cr at.% alloys, aged at 873 K, are investigated by atom-probe tomography (APT) over a range of aging times from 1/6 to 1024 hours; these alloys have approximately the same volume fraction of the y'-precipitate phase. Quantification of the phase decomposition within the framework of classical nucleation theory reveals that the y-matrix solid-solution solute supersaturations of both alloys provide the chemical driving force, which acts as …
A three-dimensional phase-field approach to martensitic transformations that uses reaction pathways in place of a Landau potential is introduced and applied to a model of Fe3Ni. Pathway branching involves an unbounded set of variants through duplication and rotations by the rotation point groups of the austenite and martensite phases. Path properties, including potential energy and elastic tensors, are calibrated by molecular statics. Acoustic waves are dealt with via a splitting technique between elastic and dissipative behaviors in a large-deformation framework. The sole free parameter of th…
Microstructural analysis of a Mg-Zn alloy deformed at room temperature by high-pressure torsion (HPT) indicates that fine-scale precipitation occurs even without post-deformation heat treatment. Small-angle X-ray scattering detects precipitates with radii between 2.5-20 nm after one rotation, with little increase in particle size or volume fraction after 20 rotations. High resolution electron micrographs identify grain boundary precipitates of monoclinic Mg$_4$Zn$_7$ phase after three rotations and MgZn$_2$ after 20 rotations.
A novel y-y'-y" dual-superlattice superalloy, with promising mechanical properties up to elevated temperatures was recently reported. The present work employs state of the art chemical and spatial characterization techniques to study the effect systematic additions of Mo, W and Fe and variations in Nb and Al contents have on the phase fraction, thermal stability, elemental partitioning and mechanical properties. Alloys were produced through arc melting followed by heat treatment. Multi-scale characterization techniques and hardness testing were employed to characterize their microstructure, th…
In this study, the effect of rhenium (Re) addition on microstructural evolution of a new low-density Co-Ni-Al-Mo-Nb based superalloy is presented. Addition of Re significantly influences the γ' precipitate morphology, the γ/γ' lattice misfit and the γ/γ' microstructural stability during long term aging. An addition of 2 at.% Re to a Co-30Ni-10Al-5Mo-2Nb (all in at.%) alloy, aged at 900°C for 50 hours, reduces the γ/γ' lattice misfit by {\approx} 40% (from +0.32% to +0.19%, measured at room temperature) and hence alters the γ' morphology from cuboidal to round-cornered cuboidal precipitates. Th…

Electron backscatter diffraction is a widely used technique for nano- to micro-scale analysis of crystal structure and orientation. Backscatter patterns produced by an alloy solid solution matrix and its ordered superlattice exhibit only extremely subtle differences, due to the inelastic scattering that precedes coherent diffraction. We show that unsupervised machine learning (with PCA, NMF, and an autoencoder neural network) is well suited to fine feature extraction and superlattice/matrix classification. Remapping cluster average patterns onto the diffraction sphere lets us compare Kikuchi b…

In this work, a multiscale approach based on phase field was developed to simulate the microstructure's evolution under irradiation in binary systems, from atomic to microstructural scale. For that purpose, an efficient numerical scheme was developed. In the case of AgCu alloy under Krypton ions irradiation, phenomenological parameters were computed using atomistic methods, as a function of the temperature and the irradiation flux. As a result, we predicted the influence of the irradiation flux and the temperature on the formation of patterned microstructures. In the case of AgCu, our model wa…
High-entropy alloys (HEAs) were presumed to have a configurational entropy as high as that of an ideally mixed solid solution (SS) of multiple elements in near-equal proportions. However, enthalpic interactions inevitably render such chemically disordered SSs rare and metastable, except at very high temperatures. Here we highlight a structural feature that sets these concentrated SSs apart from traditional solvent-solute ones: the HEAs possess a wide variety of (local) chemical ordering (LCO). Our atomistic simulations employing an empirical interatomic potential for NiCoCr reveal that the LCO…
Zirconium based alloys have been irradiated with 11 and 15 MeV proton and 116 MeV oxygen ions at different doses. The changes in the microstructure have been studied for the ion irradiated alloys as a function of dose using X-Ray Diffraction Line Profile Analysis (XRDLPA) based on the whole powder pattern fitting technique. It was observed that the microstructural parameters like domain size, microstrain within the domain, dislocation density did not change significantly with the increase in dose for proton irradiated samples. A clear change was noticed in these microstructural parameters as a…
Thick-section plates made from a recently developed Al-Cu-Mg-Li alloy have been evaluated to understand the influence of microstructure on the anisotropy of tensile strengths after natural and artificial ageing treatment. Pancake-shaped grains with a coarse substructure and strong crystallographic texture with a beta-fibre orientation at the mid-thickness position are observed. In addition, an inhomogeneous distribution of T1 precipitates through the plate thickness has been revealed with the volume fraction of intragranular precipitates ~ 40% higher at the plate centre than the thickness posi…
Ferromagnetic properties of In1-xMnxAs thin films were investigated. Room temperature ferromagnetic order was observed in nominally single-phase films with x = 0.01-0.10. Magnetization measurements indicated that these In1-xMnxAs samples had a Curie temperature of 333 K. The Curie temperature was independent of Mn concentration. The temperature dependent magnetization along with the magnitude of the saturation magnetization and microstructural data indicate that the source of the high-temperature ferromagnetism in single-phase films is not attributable to MnAs nanoprecipitates. The high transi…
The study of alloys using computational methods has been a difficult task due to the usually unknown stoichiometry and local atomic ordering of the different structures experimentally. In order to combat this, first-principles methods have been coupled with statistical methods such as the Cluster Expansion formalism in order to construct the energy hull diagram, which helps to determine if an alloyed structure can exist in nature. Traditionally, density functional theory (DFT) has been used in such workflows. In this work we propose to use chemically accurate many-body variational Monte Carlo …
Ageing mechanisms of the U-7\%wtNb alloy have been investigated on samples exposed to temperatures of 150$^{o}$C for up to 5000\,hours. A variety of surface and bulk analytic techniques have been used to investigate microstructural, chemical and crystallographic changes. Characterisation of the alloy's evolving behaviour was carried out through secondary electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Vickers hardness testing showed evidence of a strong thermal hardening relationship with agein…
