Neural networks often require large amounts of expert annotated data to train. When changes are made in the process of medical imaging, trained networks may not perform as well, and obtaining large amounts of expert annotations for each change in the imaging process can be time consuming and expensive. Online unsupervised learning is a method that has been proposed to deal with situations where there is a domain shift in incoming data, and a lack of annotations. The aim of this study is to see whether online unsupervised learning can help COVID-19 CT scan classification models adjust to slight domain shifts, when there are no annotations available for the new data. A total of six experiments are performed using three test datasets with differing amounts of domain shift. These experiments compare the performance of the online unsupervised learning strategy to a baseline, as well as comparing how the strategy performs on different domain shifts. Code for online unsupervised learning can be found at this link: https://github.com/Mewtwo/online-unsupervised-learning

Novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a highly contagious respiratory infection that has had devastating effects on the world. Recently, new COVID-19 variants are emerging making the situation more challenging and threatening. Evaluation and quantification of COVID-19 lung abnormalities based on chest Computed Tomography (CT) scans can help determining the disease stage, efficiently allocating limited healthcare resources, and making informed treatment decisions. During pandemic era, however, visual assessment and quantification of COVID-19 lung lesions by expert radiologists become expensiv…

Diagnosis of COVID-19 is necessary to prevent and control the disease. Deep learning methods have been considered a fast and accurate method. In this paper, by the parallel combination of three well-known pre-trained networks, we attempted to distinguish coronavirus-infected samples from healthy samples. The negative log-likelihood loss function has been used for model training. CT scan images in the SARS-CoV-2 dataset were used for diagnosis. The SARS-CoV-2 dataset contains 2482 images of lung CT scans, of which 1252 images belong to COVID-19-infected samples. The proposed model was close to …

The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) constitutes a public health emergency globally. It is a deadly disease which has infected more than 230 million people worldwide. Therefore, early and unswerving detection of COVID-19 is necessary. Evidence of this virus is most commonly being tested by RT-PCR test. This test is not 100% reliable as it is known to give false positives and false negatives. Other methods like X-Ray images or CT scans show the detailed imaging of lungs and have been proven more reliable. This paper compares different deep learning models used to detect COVID-19 through tra…
COVID-19 has led to hundreds of millions of cases and millions of deaths worldwide since its onset. The fight against this pandemic is on-going on multiple fronts. While vaccinations are picking up speed, there are still billions of unvaccinated people. In this fight against the virus, diagnosis of the disease and isolation of the patients to prevent any spread play a huge role. Machine Learning approaches have assisted in the diagnosis of COVID-19 cases by analyzing chest X-rays and CT-scan images of patients. To push algorithm development and research in this direction of radiological diagno…

Background and Objective: During pandemics, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) approaches combined with biomedical science play a significant role in reducing the burden on the healthcare systems and physicians. The rapid increment in cases of COVID-19 has led to an increase in demand for hospital beds and other medical equipment. However, since medical facilities are limited, it is recommended to diagnose patients as per the severity of the infection. Keeping this in mind, we share our research in detecting COVID-19 as well as assessing its severity using chest-CT scans and Deep Learning…

The rapid outbreak of COVID-19 threatens humans life all around the world. Due to insufficient diagnostic infrastructures, developing an accurate, efficient, inexpensive, and quick diagnostic tool is of great importance. As chest radiography, such as chest X-ray (CXR) and CT computed tomography (CT), is a possible way for screening COVID-19, developing an automatic image classification tool is immensely helpful for detecting the patients with COVID-19. To date, researchers have proposed several different screening methods; however, none of them could achieve a reliable and highly sensitive per…

As an alternative, recent research has investigated the use of Computer Vision with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for the classification of COVID-19 from CT scans. Amidst the ongoing pandemic, several studies have shown that COVID-19 classification and grading using computed tomography (CT) images can be automated with convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Many of these studies focused on reporting initial results of algorithms that were assembled from commonly used components. The choice of these components was often pragmatic rather than systematic. For instance, several studies used 2D CNNs even though these might not be optimal for handling 3D CT volumes. We propose a novel slice selection method for each CT dataset to address this limitation, effectively fi…

Automatic lesion segmentation on thoracic CT enables rapid quantitative analysis of lung involvement in COVID-19 infections. However, obtaining a large amount of voxel-level annotations for training segmentation networks is prohibitively expensive. Therefore, we propose a weakly-supervised segmentation method based on dense regression activation maps (dRAMs). Most weakly-supervised segmentation approaches exploit class activation maps (CAMs) to localize objects. However, because CAMs were trained for classification, they do not align precisely with the object segmentations. Instead, we produce…
Pulmonary lobe segmentation in computed tomography scans is essential for regional assessment of pulmonary diseases. Recent works based on convolution neural networks have achieved good performance for this task. However, they are still limited in capturing structured relationships due to the nature of convolution. We argue that such structural relationships play a critical role in the accurate delineation of pulmonary lobes when the…
