During the outbreak time of COVID-19, computed tomography (CT) is a useful manner for diagnosing COVID-19 patients. Due to privacy issues, publicly available COVID-19 CT datasets are highly difficult to obtain, which hinders the research and development of AI-powered diagnosis methods of COVID-19 based on CTs. To address this issue, we build an open-sourced dataset -- COVID-CT, which contains 349 COVID-19 CT images from 216 patients and 463 non-COVID-19 CTs. The utility of this dataset is confirmed by a senior radiologist who has been diagnosing and treating COVID-19 patients since the outbreak of this pandemic. We also perform experimental studies which further demonstrate that this dataset is useful for developing AI-based diagnosis models of COVID-19. Using this dataset, we develop diagnosis methods based on multi-task learning and self-supervised learning, that achieve an F1 of 0.90, an AUC of 0.98, and an accuracy of 0.89. According to the senior radiologist, models with such performance are good enough for clinical usage. The data and code are available at https://github.com/UCSD-AI4H/COVID-CT
With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, understanding the characteristics of the virus has become an important and challenging task in the scientific community. While tests do exist for COVID-19, the goal of our research is to explore other methods of identifying infected individuals. This is an important area to explore as COVID-19 is a novel disease that is currently being studied in detail. Our methodology explores the potential that uns…

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has drastically overwhelmed more than 200 countries affecting millions and claiming almost 1 million lives, since its emergence in late 2019. This highly contagious disease can easily spread, and if not controlled in a timely fashion, can rapidly incapacitate healthcare systems. The current standard diagnosis method, the Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT- PCR), is time consuming, and subject to low sensitivity. The newly discovered Corona virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been globally spreading and causing hundreds of thousands of deaths around the world as of its first emergence in late 2019. Computed tomography (CT) scans have shown distinctive features and higher sensitivity compared to other diagnostic tests, in particular the current gold standard, i.e., the Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) test. Current deep learning-based algorithms are mainly developed based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to identify COVID-19 pneumonia cases. CNNs, however, require extensive …
COVID-19 is an infectious disease that causes respiratory problems similar to those caused by SARS-CoV (2003). Currently, swab samples are being used for its diagnosis. The most common testing method used is the RT-PCR method, which has high specificity but variable sensitivity. AI-based detection has the capability to overcome this drawback. In this paper, we propose a prospective method wherein we use chest CT scans to diagnose the patients for COVID-19 pneumonia. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is currently the gold standard in COVID-19 diagnosis. It can, however, take days to provide the diagnosis, and false negative rate is relatively high. Nevertheless, it is shown that standard dose CT scan gives significant radiation burden to patients, especially those in need of multiple scans. In this study, we consider low-dose and ultra-low-dose (LDCT and ULDCT) scan protocols that reduce the radiation exposure close to tha…

Automatic lesion segmentation on thoracic CT enables rapid quantitative analysis of lung involvement in COVID-19 infections. However, obtaining a large amount of voxel-level annotations for training segmentation networks is prohibitively expensive. Therefore, we propose a weakly-supervised segmentation method based on dense regression activation maps (dRAMs). Most weakly-supervised segmentation approaches exploit class activation maps (CAMs) to localize objects. However, because CAMs were trained for classification, they do not align precisely with the object segmentations. Instead, we produce…
