The world is still overwhelmed by the spread of the COVID-19 virus. With over 250 Million infected cases as of November 2021 and affecting 219 countries and territories, the world remains in the pandemic period. Detecting COVID-19 using the deep learning method on CT scan images can play a vital role in assisting medical professionals and decision authorities in controlling the spread of the disease and providing essential support for patients. The convolution neural network is widely used in the field of large-scale image recognition. The current method of RT-PCR to diagnose COVID-19 is time-consuming and universally limited. This research aims to propose a deep learning-based approach to classify COVID-19 pneumonia patients, bacterial pneumonia, viral pneumonia, and healthy (normal cases). This paper used deep transfer learning to classify the data via Inception-ResNet-V2 neural network architecture. The proposed model has been intentionally simplified to reduce the implementation cost so that it can be easily implemented and used in different geographical areas, especially rural and developing regions.
In the research, we developed a computer vision solution to support diagnostic radiology in differentiating between COVID-19 pneumonia, influenza virus pneumonia, and normal biomarkers. The chest radiograph appearance of COVID-19 pneumonia is thought to be nonspecific, having presented a challenge to identify an optimal architecture of a convolutional neural network (CNN) that would classify with a high sensitivity among the pulmonary inflammation features of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 types of pneumonia. Rahman (2021) states that COVID-19 radiography images observe unavailability and quality i…

Accurate and rapid detection of COVID-19 pneumonia is crucial for optimal patient treatment. Chest X-Ray (CXR) is the first line imaging test for COVID-19 pneumonia diagnosis as it is fast, cheap and easily accessible. Inspired by the success of deep learning (DL) in computer vision, many DL-models have been proposed to detect COVID-19 pneumonia using CXR images. Unfortunately, these deep classifiers lack the transparency in interpreting findings, which may limit their applications in clinical practice. The existing commonly used visual explanation methods are either too noisy or imprecise, wi…

We propose a two-stage Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based classification framework for detecting COVID-19 and Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) using the chest Computed Tomography (CT) scan images. In the first stage, an infection - COVID-19 or CAP, is detected using a pre-trained DenseNet architecture. Then, in the second stage, a fine-grained three-way classification is done using EfficientNet architecture. The proposed COVID+CAP-CNN framework achieved a slice-level classification accuracy of over 94% at identifying COVID-19 and CAP. Further, the proposed framework has the potential t…

Trust in predictions made by machine learning models is increased if the model generalizes well on previously unseen samples and when inference is accompanied by cogent explanations of the reasoning behind predictions. In the image classification domain, generalization can be assessed through accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. Explainability can be assessed by how well the model localizes the object of interest within an image. However, both generalization and explainability through localization are degraded in scenarios with significant overlap between classes. We propose a method based …

As the rapid spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) worldwide, chest X-ray radiography has also been used to detect COVID-19 infected pneumonia and assess its severity or monitor its prognosis in the hospitals due to its low cost, low radiation dose, and wide accessibility. However, how to more accurately and efficiently detect COVID-19 infected pneumonia and distinguish it from other community-acquired pneumonia remains a challenge. In order to address this challenge, we in this study develop and test a new computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) scheme. It includes several image pre-processing algo…
In this work, we estimate the severity of pneumonia in COVID-19 patients and conduct a longitudinal study of disease progression. To achieve this goal, we developed a deep learning model for simultaneous detection and segmentation of pneumonia in chest Xray (CXR) images and generalized to COVID-19 pneumonia. The segmentations were utilized to calculate a "Pneumonia Ratio" which indicates the disease severity. The measurement of disease severity enables to build a disease extent profile over time for hospitalized patients. To validate the model relevance to the patient monitoring task, we devel…

In this paper, we have trained several deep convolutional networks with introduced training techniques for classifying X-ray images into three classes: normal, pneumonia, and COVID-19, based on two open-source datasets. Our data contains 180 X-ray images that belong to persons infected with COVID-19, and we attempted to apply methods to achieve the best possible results. In this research, we introduce some training techniques that help the network learn better when we have an unbalanced dataset (fewer cases of COVID-19 along with more cases from other classes). We also propose a neural network…

Around 450 million people are affected by pneumonia every year which results in 2.5 million deaths. Covid-19 has also affected 181 million people which has lead to 3.92 million casualties. The chances of death in both of these diseases can be significantly reduced if they are diagnosed early. However, the current methods of diagnosing pneumonia (complaints + chest X-ray) and covid-19 (RT-PCR) require the presence of expert radiologists and time, respectively. With the help of Deep Learning models, pneumonia and covid-19 can be detected instantly from Chest X-rays or CT scans. This way, the pro…

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the highly contagious illness caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The standard diagnostic testing procedure for COVID-19 is testing a nasopharyngeal swab for SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid using a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which can take multiple days to provide a diagnosis. Another widespread form of testing is rapid antigen testing, which has a low sensitivity compared to PCR, but is favored for its quick diagnosis time of usually 15-30 minutes. Patients who test positive for COVID-19 demonstrate diffuse alv…

One of the primary clinical observations for screening the infectious by the novel coronavirus is capturing a chest x-ray image. In most of the patients, a chest x-ray contains abnormalities, such as consolidation, which are the results of COVID-19 viral pneumonia. In this study, research is conducted on efficiently detecting imaging features of this type of pneumonia using deep convolutional neural networks in a large dataset. It is demonstrated that simple models, alongside the majority of pretrained networks in the literature, focus on irrelevant features for decision-making. In this paper,…

Because the infection by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (COVID-19) causes the pneumonia-like effect in the lungs, the examination of chest x-rays can help to diagnose the diseases. For automatic analysis of images, they are represented in machines by a set of semantic features. Deep Learning (DL) models are widely used to extract features from images. General deep features may not be appropriate to represent chest x-rays as they have a few semantic regions. Though the Bag of Visual Words (BoVW) based features are shown to be more appropriate for x-ray type of images, existing …

Advancing Diagnostic Precision: Leveraging Machine Learning Techniques for Accurate Detection of Covid-19, Pneumonia, and Tuberculosis in Chest X-Ray Images
The infection of respiratory coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) starts with the upper respiratory tract and as the virus grows, the infection can progress to lungs and develop pneumonia. The conventional way of COVID-19 diagnosis is reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which is less sensitive during early stages; especially if the patient is asymptomatic, which may further cause more severe pneumonia. In this context, several deep learning models have been proposed to identify pulmonary infections using publicly available chest X-ray (CXR) image datasets for early diagnos…

A long-standing challenge of deep learning models involves how to handle noisy labels, especially in applications where human lives are at stake. Adoption of the data Shapley Value (SV), a cooperative game theoretical approach, is an intelligent valuation solution to tackle the issue of noisy labels. Data SV can be used together with a learning model and an evaluation metric to validate each training point's contribution to the model's performance. The SV of a data point, however, is not unique and depends on the learning model, the evaluation metric, and other data points collaborating in the…
