We use the method of Lightcone Conformal Truncation (LCT) to obtain form factors and spectral densities of local operators $\mathcal{O}$ in $ϕ^4$ theory in two dimensions. We show how to use the Hamiltonian eigenstates from LCT to obtain form factors that are matrix elements of a local operator $\mathcal{O}$ between single-particle bra and ket states, and we develop methods that significantly reduce errors resulting from the finite truncation of the Hilbert space. We extrapolate these form factors as a function of momentum to the regime where, by crossing symmetry, they are form factors of $\mathcal{O}$ between the vacuum and a two-particle asymptotic scattering state. We also compute the momentum-space time-ordered two-point functions of local operators in LCT. These converge quickly at momenta away from branch cuts, allowing us to indirectly obtain the time-ordered correlator and the spectral density at the branch cuts. We focus on the case where the local operator $\mathcal{O}$ is the trace $Θ$ of the stress tensor.
We both review and augment the lightcone conformal truncation (LCT) method. LCT is a Hamiltonian truncation method for calculating dynamical quantities in QFT in infinite volume. This document is a self-contained, pedagogical introduction and "how-to" manual for LCT. We focus on 2D QFTs which have UV descriptions as free CFTs containing scalars, fermions, and gauge fields, providing a rich starting arena for LCT applications. Along our way, we develop several new techniques and innovations that greatly enhance the efficiency and applicability of LCT. These include the development of CFT radial…
We study the chiral limit of 2d QCD with a single quark flavor at finite $N_c$ using LCT. By modifying the LCT basis according to the quark mass in a manner motivated by 't Hooft's analysis, we are able to restore convergence for quark masses much smaller than the QCD strong coupling scale. For such small quark masses, the IR of the theory is expected to be well described by the Sine-Gordon model. We verify that LCT numerics are able to capture in detail the spectrum and correlation functions of the Sine-Gordon model. This opens up the possibility for studying deformations of various integrabl…
In the study of conformal field theories, conformal blocks in the lightcone limit are fundamental to the analytic conformal bootstrap method. Here we consider the lightcone limit of 4-point functions of generic scalar primaries. Based on the nonperturbative pole structure in spin of Lorentzian inversion, we propose the natural basis functions for cross-channel conformal blocks. In this new basis, we find a closed-form expression for crossed conformal blocks in terms of the Kampé de Fériet function, which applies to intermediate operators of arbitrary spin in general dimensions. We derive the g…
We present new closed-form expressions for 4-point scalar conformal blocks in the s- and t-channel lightcone expansions. Our formulae apply to intermediate operators of arbitrary spin in general dimensions. For physical spin $\ell$, they are composed of at most $(\ell+1)$ Gaussian hypergeometric functions at each order.
We present a factorized decomposition of 4-point scalar conformal blocks near the lightcone, which applies to arbitrary intermediate spin and general spacetime dimensions. Then we discuss the systematic expansion in large intermediate spin and the resummations of the large-spin tails of Regge trajectories. The basic integrals for the Lorentzian inversion are given by Wilson functions.
A recent paper by Gross and Erler (hep-th/0406199) showed that by making a certain well-defined, unitary transformation on the mode basis for the open bosonic string--one that identifies the lightcone component of position with the string midpoint--it is possible to render the action for cubic string field theory local in lightcone time. In this basis, then, cubic string field theory possesses a well-defined initial value formulation and a conserved Hamiltonian. With this new understanding it seems natural to study time dependent solutions representing the the decay of an unstable D-branes. In…
We use Lightcone Conformal Truncation (LCT) -- a version of Hamiltonian truncation -- to study the nonperturbative, real-time dynamics of $ϕ^4$-theory in 2+1 dimensions. This theory has UV divergences that need to be regulated. We review how, in a Hamiltonian framework with a total energy cutoff, renormalization is necessarily \emph{state-dependent}, and UV sensitivity cannot be canceled with standard local operator counterterms. To overcome this problem, we present a prescription for constructing the appropriate state-dependent counterterms for (2+1)d $ϕ^4$-theory in lightcone quantization. W…
We analytically study the lightcone limit of the conformal bootstrap equations for 4-point functions containing global symmetry currents and the stress tensor in 3d CFTs. We show that the contribution of the stress tensor to the anomalous dimensions of large spin double-twist states is negative if and only if the conformal collider physics bounds are satisfied. In the context of AdS/CFT these results indicate a relation between the attractiveness of AdS gravity and positivity of the CFT energy flux. We also study the contribution of non-Abelian conserved currents to the anomalous dimensions of…
Heavy-heavy-light-light (HHLL) correlators of pairwise identical scalars in CFTs with a large central charge in any number of dimensions admit a double scaling limit where the ratio of the heavy conformal dimension to the central charge becomes large as the separation between the light operators becomes null. In this limit the stress tensor sector of a generic HHLL correlator receives contributions from the multi stress tensor operators with any number of stress tensors, as long as their twist is not increased by index contractions. We show how one can compute this leading twist stress tensor …
We combine the methods of Hamiltonian Truncation and the recently proposed generalisation of the S-matrix bootstrap that includes local operators to determine the two-particle scattering amplitude and the two-particle form factor of the stress tensor at $s>0$ in the 2d $ϕ^4$ theory. We use the form factor of the stress tensor at $s\le 0$ and its spectral density computed using Lightcone Conformal Truncation (LCT), and inject them into the generalized S-matrix bootstrap set-up. The obtained results for the scattering amplitude and the form factor are fully reliable only in the elastic regime. W…
This paper is a study of a spacelike-timelike conformal correspondence in QCD. When the times at vertices are fixed in an A_+ = 0 gauge calculation the distribution of gluons in a highly virtual decay have an exact correspondence with the gluons in the lightcone wavefunction of a high energy dipole with the identification of angles in the timelike case and transverse coordinates in the lightcone wavefunction. Divergences show up when the time integrals are done. A procedure for dropping these divergences, analogous to the Gell-Mann Low procedure in QED, allows one to define a conformal QCD, at…
We set up and analyze the lightcone Hamiltonian for an abelian Chern-Simons field coupled to $N_f$ fermions in the limit of large $N_f$ using conformal truncation, i.e. with a truncated space of states corresponding to primary operators with dimension below a maximum cutoff $Δ_{\rm max}$. In both the Chern-Simons theory, and in the $O(N)$ model at infinite $N$, we compute the current spectral functions analytically as a function of $Δ_{\rm max}$ and reproduce previous results in the limit that the truncation $Δ_{\rm max}$ is taken to $\infty$. Along the way, we determine how to preserve gauge …
Near lightcone correlators are dominated by operators with the lowest twist. We consider the contributions of such leading lowest twist multi-stress tensor operators to a heavy-heavy-light-light correlator in a CFT of any even dimensionality with a large central charge. An infinite number of such operators contribute, but their sum is described by a simple ansatz. We show that the coefficients in this ansatz can be determined recursively, thereby providing an operational procedure to compute them. This is achieved by bootstrapping the corresponding near lightcone correlator: conformal data for…
We explore the large spin spectrum in two-dimensional conformal field theories with a finite twist gap, using the modular bootstrap in the lightcone limit. By recursively solving the modular crossing equations associated to different $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ elements, we identify the universal contribution to the density of large spin states from the vacuum in the dual channel. Our result takes the form of a sum over $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ elements, whose leading term generalizes the usual Cardy formula to a wider regime. Rather curiously, the contribution to the density of states from the vacuum beco…
We compute numerically the dimensions and OPE coefficients of several operators in the 3d Ising CFT, and then try to reverse-engineer the solution to crossing symmetry analytically. Our key tool is a set of new techniques for computing infinite sums of SL(2,R) conformal blocks. Using these techniques, we solve the lightcone bootstrap to all orders in an asymptotic expansion in large spin, and suggest a strategy for going beyond the large spin limit. We carry out the first steps of this strategy for the 3d Ising CFT, deriving analytic approximations for the dimensions and OPE coefficients of se…
We present a new framework for studying conformal field theories deformed by one or more relevant operators. The original CFT is described in infinite volume using a basis of states with definite momentum, $P$, and conformal Casimir, $\mathcal{C}$. The relevant deformation is then considered using lightcone quantization, with the resulting Hamiltonian expressed in terms of this CFT basis. Truncating to states with $\mathcal{C} \leq \mathcal{C}_{\max}$, one can numerically find the resulting spectrum, as well as other dynamical quantities, such as spectral densities of operators. This method re…
We discuss holography for Schrodinger solutions of both topologically massive gravity in three dimensions and massive vector theories in (d+1) dimensions. In both cases the dual field theory can be viewed as a d-dimensional conformal field theory (two dimensional in the case of TMG) deformed by certain operators that respect the Schrodinger symmetry. These operators are irrelevant from the viewpoint of the relativistic conformal group but they are exactly marginal with respect to the non-relativistic conformal group. The spectrum of linear fluctuations around the background solutions correspon…
We investigate two aspects of conformal field theories. In the first part, we study the general 4-point correlator of identical scalars around the fully crossing symmetric point $u=v=1$, where $u,v$ are conformally invariant cross ratios. Since this point is fully crossing invariant, we can deduce some general properties of the 4-point correlators from crossing symmetry. In the second part, we discuss the conformal bootstrap with OPE truncations. As a generalization of Gliozzi's method, we propose to extract the low-lying CFT data by minimizing the "error" induced by an OPE truncation. The err…
We analytically study the lightcone limit of the conformal bootstrap for 4-point functions containing scalars charged under global symmetries. We show the existence of large spin double-twist operators in various representations of the global symmetry group. We then compute their anomalous dimensions in terms of the central charge $C_T$, current central charge $C_J$, and the OPE coefficients of low dimension scalars. In AdS, these results correspond to the binding energy of two-particle states arising from the exchange of gravitons, gauge bosons, and light scalar fields. Using unitarity and cr…
We use Lightcone Conformal Truncation to analyze the RG flow of the two-dimensional supersymmetric Gross-Neveu-Yukawa theory, i.e. the theory of a real scalar superfield with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric cubic superpotential. The theory depends on a single dimensionless coupling $\bar{g}$, and is expected to have a critical point at a tuned value $\bar{g}_*$ where it flows in the IR to the Tricritical Ising Model (TIM); the theory spontaneously breaks the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry on one side of this phase transition, and breaks SUSY on the other side. We calculate the spectrum of energies as a fu…
For expansions in one-dimensional conformal blocks, we provide a rigorous link between the asymptotics of the spectral density of exchanged primaries and the leading singularity in the crossed channel. Our result has a direct application to systems of SL(2,R)-invariant correlators (also known as 1d CFTs). It also puts on solid ground a part of the lightcone bootstrap analysis of the spectrum of operators of high spin and bounded twist in CFTs in d>2. In addition, a similar argument controls the spectral density asymptotics in large N gauge theories.
With the purpose of holographically describing flows from a large family of four dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ conformal field theories, we discuss truncations of seven dimensional supergravity to five dimensions. We write explicitly the reduced gauged supergravity and find BPS equations for simple configurations. Lifting these flows to eleven dimensions or Massive IIA supergravity, we present string duals to RG flows from strongly coupled conformal theories when deformed by marginal and/or relevant operators. We further discuss observables common to infinite families of ${\cal N}=…
We obtain lattice models whose continuum limits correspond to $N=2$ superconformal coset models. This is done by taking the well known vertex model whose continuum limit is the $G \times G/G$ conformal field theory, and twisting the transfer matrix and modifying the quantum group truncation. We find that the natural order parameters of the new models are precisely the chiral primary fields. The integrable perturbations of the conformal field theory limit also have natural counterparts in the lattice formulation, and these can be incorporated into an affine quantum group structure. The topologi…
We study the operator product expansion (OPE) of two identical scalar primary operators in the lightcone limit in a conformal field theory where a scalar is the operator with lowest twist. We see that in CFTs where both the stress tensor and a scalar are the lowest twist operators, the stress tensor contributes at the leading order in the lightcone OPE and the scalar contributes at the subleading order. We also see that there does not exist a scalar analogue of the average null energy condition (ANEC) for a CFT where a scalar is the lowest twist operator.
Hamiltonian Truncation (HT) is a numerical approach for calculating observables in a Quantum Field Theory non-perturbatively. This approach can be applied to theories constructed by deforming a conformal field theory with a relevant operator of scaling dimension $Δ$. UV divergences arise when $Δ$ is larger than half of the spacetime dimension $d$. These divergences can be regulated by HT or by using a more conventional local regulator. In this work we show that extra UV divergences appear when using HT rather than a local regulator for $Δ\geq d/2+1/4$, revealing a striking breakdown of localit…
The Truncated conformal space approach (TCSA) is a numerical technique for finding finite size spectrum of Hamiltonians in quantum field theory described as perturbations of conformal field theories. The truncation errors of the method have been systematically studied near the UV fixed point (when the characteristic energy related to the coupling is less than the truncation cutoff) where a good theoretical understanding has been achieved. However numerically the method demonstrated a good agreement with other methods for much larger values of the coupling when the RG flow approaches a new fixe…
We study 1+1 dimensional $ϕ^4$ theory using the recently proposed method of conformal truncation. Starting in the UV CFT of free field theory, we construct a complete basis of states with definite conformal Casimir, $\mathcal{C}$. We use these states to express the Hamiltonian of the full interacting theory in lightcone quantization. After truncating to states with $\mathcal{C} \leq \mathcal{C}_{\max}$, we numerically diagonalize the Hamiltonian at strong coupling and study the resulting IR dynamics. We compute non-perturbative spectral densities of several local operators, which are equivalen…
We describe examples of drastic truncations of conformal bootstrap equations encoding much more information than that obtained by a direct numerical approach. A three-term truncation of the four point function of a free scalar in any space dimensions provides algebraic identities among conformal block derivatives which generate the exact spectrum of the infinitely many primary operators contributing to it. In boundary conformal field theories, we point out that the appearance of free parameters in the solutions of bootstrap equations is not an artifact of truncations, rather it reflects a phys…

In strongly coupled conformal field theories with a large central charge important light degrees of freedom are the stress tensor and its composites, multi-stress tensors. We consider the OPE expansion of two-point functions of the stress tensor in thermal and heavy states and focus on the contributions from the stress tensor and double-stress tensors in four spacetime dimensions. We compare the results to the holographic finite temperature two-point functions and read off conformal data beyond the leading order in the large central charge expansion. In particular, we compute corrections to th…
Highly energetic particles traveling in the background of an asymptotically AdS black hole experience a Shapiro time delay and an angle deflection. These quantities are related to the Regge limit of a heavy-heavy-light-light four-point function of scalar operators in the dual CFT. The Schwarzschild radius of the black hole in AdS units is proportional to the ratio of the conformal dimension of the heavy operator and the central charge. This ratio serves as a useful expansion parameter; its power counts the number of stress tensors in the multi-stress tensor operators which contribute to the fo…
The effective potential of the conformal factor in the effective average action approach to Quantum Einstein Gravity is discussed. It is shown, without invoking any truncation or other approximations, that if the theory has has a non-Gaussian ultraviolet fixed point and is asymptotically safe the potential has a characteristic behavior near the origin. This behavior might be observable in numerical simulations.
We consider Lorentzian CFT Wightman functions in momentum space. In particular, we derive a set of reference formulas for computing two- and three-point functions, restricting our attention to three-point functions where the middle operator (corresponding to a Hamiltonian density) carries zero spatial momentum, but otherwise allowing operators to have arbitrary spin. A direct application of our formulas is the computation of Hamiltonian matrix elements within the framework of conformal truncation, a recently proposed method for numerically studying strongly-coupled QFTs in real time and infini…
We discuss the effective potential of the conformal factor in the effective average action approach to Quantum Einstein Gravity. Without invoking any truncation or other approximations we show that if the theory has has a non-Gaussian ultraviolet fixed point and is asymptotically safe the potential has a characteristic behavior near the origin. We argue that this characteristic behavior has already been observed in numerical simulations within the Causal Dynamical Triangulation approach.
The strong-field limit for the 2-form potential on an M5-brane yields a conformal chiral 2-form electrodynamics in six dimensions, with gauge-invariant self-interactions but no adjustable coupling constant; the stress tensor is that of a null fluid. Lorentz invariance can be made manifest via an interpretation as a tensionless `space-filling M5-brane', or as a truncation of the infra-red dynamics of an M5-brane in AdS7 x S4.
In this work we apply the lightcone bootstrap to a four-point function of scalars in two-dimensional conformal field theory. We include the entire Virasoro symmetry and consider non-rational theories with a gap in the spectrum from the vacuum and no conserved currents. For those theories, we compute the large dimension limit (h/c>>1) of the OPE spectral decomposition of the Virasoro vacuum. We then propose a kernel ansatz that generalizes the spectral decomposition beyond h/c>>1. Finally, we estimate the corrections to the OPE spectral densities from the inclusion of the lightest operator in t…
In the recent paper arXiv:1606.02921, the two invariant actions for 6D $N=(1,0)$ conformal supergravity were constructed in superspace, corresponding to the supersymmetrization of $C^3$ and $C\Box C$. In this paper, we provide the translation from superspace to the component formulation of superconformal tensor calculus, and we give the full component actions of these two invariants. As a second application, we build the component form for the supersymmetric $F\Box F$ action coupled to conformal supergravity. Exploiting the fact that the $N=(2,0)$ Weyl multiplet has a consistent truncation to …
We probe the conformal block structure of a scalar four-point function in $d\geq2$ conformal field theories by including higher-order derivative terms in a bulk gravitational action. We consider a heavy-light four-point function as the boundary correlator at large central charge. Such a four-point function can be computed, on the gravity side, as a two-point function of the light operator in a black hole geometry created by the heavy operator. We consider analytically solving the corresponding scalar field equation in a near-boundary expansion and find that the multi-stress tensor conformal bl…
We establish a duality between the free massless relativistic particle in d dimensions, the non-relativistic hydrogen atom (1/r potential) in (d-1) space dimensions, and the harmonic oscillator in (d-2) space dimensions with its mass given as the lightcone momentum of an additional dimension. The duality is in the sense that the classical action of these systems are gauge fixed forms of the same worldline gauge theory action at the classical level, and they are all described by the same unitary representation of the conformal group SO(d,2) at the quantum level. The worldline action has a gauge…
General fermionic expressions for the branching functions of the rational coset conformal field theories $\widehat{su}(2)_{M}\times \widehat{su}(2)_N/\widehat{su}(2)_{M+N}$ are given. The equality of the bosonic and fermionic representations for the branching functions is proven by introducing polynomial truncations of these branching functions which are the configuration sums of the RSOS models in regime III. The path space interpretation of the RSOS models provides recursion relations for the configuration sums. The proof of the recursion relations for the fermionic expressions is given by u…
We present a new consistent truncation of $D=11$ supergravity to $D=4$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ minimal gauged supergravity, on the seven-dimensional internal Riemannian space corresponding to the most general class of $D=11$ solutions with an AdS$_{4}$ factor and $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry. A truncation ansatz is proposed and its consistency checked at the level of the $D=11$ Bianchi identity, bosonic equations of motion, and supersymmetry variations of the gravitino. The general class includes an $\mathcal{N}=2$ AdS$_{4}$ solution dual to the conformal, low-energy physics phase corresponding to a …
We study the conformal window of asymptotically free gauge theories containing $N_f$ flavors of fermion matter transforming to the vector and two-index representations of $SO(N),~SU(N)$ and $Sp(2N)$ gauge groups. For $SO(N)$ we also consider the spinorial representation. We determine the critical number of flavors $N_f^{\rm cr}$, corresponding to the lower end of the conformal window, by using the conjectured critical condition on the anomalous dimension of the fermion bilinear at an infrared fixed point, $γ_{\barψψ}=1$ or equivalently $γ_{\barψψ}(2-γ_{\barψψ})=1$. To compute the anomalous dim…
We consider unitary CFTs with continuous global symmetries in $d>2$. We consider a state created by the lightest operator of large charge $Q \gg 1$ and analyze the correlator of two light charged operators in this state. We assume that the correlator admits a well-defined large $Q$ expansion and, relatedly, that the macroscopic (thermodynamic) limit of the correlator exists. We find that the crossing equations admit a consistent truncation, where only a finite number $N$ of Regge trajectories contribute to the correlator at leading nontrivial order. We classify all such truncated solutions to …
