Automatic image matting (AIM) refers to estimating the soft foreground from an arbitrary natural image without any auxiliary input like trimap, which is useful for image editing. Prior methods try to learn semantic features to aid the matting process while being limited to images with salient opaque foregrounds such as humans and animals. In this paper, we investigate the difficulties when extending them to natural images with salient transparent/meticulous foregrounds or non-salient foregrounds. To address the problem, a novel end-to-end matting network is proposed, which can predict a generalized trimap for any image of the above types as a unified semantic representation. Simultaneously, the learned semantic features guide the matting network to focus on the transition areas via an attention mechanism. We also construct a test set AIM-500 that contains 500 diverse natural images covering all types along with manually labeled alpha mattes, making it feasible to benchmark the generalization ability of AIM models. Results of the experiments demonstrate that our network trained on available composite matting datasets outperforms existing methods both objectively and subjectively. The source code and dataset are available at https://github.com/JizhiziLi/AIM.

We introduce in-context matting, a novel task setting of image matting. Given a reference image of a certain foreground and guided priors such as points, scribbles, and masks, in-context matting enables automatic alpha estimation on a batch of target images of the same foreground category, without additional auxiliary input. This setting marries good performance in auxiliary input-based matting and ease of use in automatic matting, which finds a good trade-off between customization and automation. To overcome the key challenge of accurate foreground matching, we introduce IconMatting, an in-co…
We resolve the ill-posed alpha matting problem from a completely different perspective. Given an input portrait image, instead of estimating the corresponding alpha matte, we focus on the other end, to subtly enhance this input so that the alpha matte can be easily estimated by any existing matting models. This is accomplished by exploring the latent space of GAN models. It is demonstrated that interpretable directions can be found in the latent space and they correspond to semantic image transformations. We further explore this property in alpha matting. Particularly, we invert an input portr…

Image matting plays an important role in image and video editing. However, the formulation of image matting is inherently ill-posed. Traditional methods usually employ interaction to deal with the image matting problem with trimaps and strokes, and cannot run on the mobile phone in real-time. In this paper, we propose a real-time automatic deep matting approach for mobile devices. By leveraging the densely connected blocks and the dilated convolution, a light full convolutional network is designed to predict a coarse binary mask for portrait images. And a feathering block, which is edge-preser…

Image matting and image harmonization are two important tasks in image composition. Image matting, aiming to achieve foreground boundary details, and image harmonization, aiming to make the background compatible with the foreground, are both promising yet challenging tasks. Previous works consider optimizing these two tasks separately, which may lead to a sub-optimal solution. We propose to optimize matting and harmonization simultaneously to get better performance on both the two tasks and achieve more natural results. We propose a new Generative Adversarial (GAN) framework which optimizing t…

Human matting refers to extracting human parts from natural images with high quality, including human detail information such as hair, glasses, hat, etc. This technology plays an essential role in image synthesis and visual effects in the film industry. When the green screen is not available, the existing human matting methods need the help of additional inputs (such as trimap, background image, etc.), or the model with high computational cost and complex network structure, which brings great difficulties to the application of human matting in practice. To alleviate such problems, most existin…

Image matting is a longstanding problem in computational photography. Although, it has been studied for more than two decades, yet there is a challenge of developing an automatic matting algorithm which does not require any human efforts. Most of the state-of-the-art matting algorithms require human intervention in the form of trimap or scribbles to generate the alpha matte form the input image. In this paper, we present a simple and efficient approach to automatically generate the trimap from the input image and make the whole matting process free from human-in-the-loop. We use learning based…
Natural image matting is a fundamental and challenging computer vision task. It has many applications in image editing and composition. Recently, deep learning-based approaches have achieved great improvements in image matting. However, most of them require a user-supplied trimap as an auxiliary input, which limits the matting applications in the real world. Although some trimap-free approaches have been proposed, the matting quality is still unsatisfactory compared to trimap-based ones. Without the trimap guidance, the matting models suffer from foreground-background ambiguity easily, and als…

Natural image matting aims to precisely separate foreground objects from background using alpha matte. Fully automatic natural image matting without external annotation is challenging. Well-performed matting methods usually require accurate labor-intensive handcrafted trimap as extra input, while the performance of automatic trimap generation method of dilating foreground segmentation fluctuates with segmentation quality. Therefore, we argue that how to handle trade-off of additional information input is a major issue in automatic matting. This paper presents a semantic-guided automatic natura…
Automatic portrait video matting is an under-constrained problem. Most state-of-the-art methods only exploit the semantic information and process each frame individually. Their performance is compromised due to the lack of temporal information between the frames. To solve this problem, we propose the context motion network to leverage semantic information and motion information. To capture the motion information, we estimate the optical flow and design a context-motion updating operator to integrate features between frames recurrently. Our experiments show that our network outperforms state-of…

Our model MMNet, based on multi-branch dilated convolution with linear bottleneck blocks, outperforms the state-of-the-art model and is orders of magnitude faster. The model can be accelerated four times to attain 30 FPS on Xiaomi Mi 5 device with moderate increase in the gradient error. Under the same conditions, our model has an order of magnitude less number of parameters and is faster than Mobile…
In this paper, we propose an end to end solution for image matting i.e high-precision extraction of foreground objects from natural images. Image matting and background detection can be achieved easily through chroma keying in a studio setting when the background is either pure green or blue. Nonetheless, image matting in natural scenes with complex and uneven depth backgrounds remains a tedious task that requires human intervention. To achieve complete automatic foreground extraction in natural scenes, we propose a method that assimilates semantic segmentation and deep image matting processes…
Over the last few years, deep learning based approaches have achieved outstanding improvements in natural image matting. However, there are still two drawbacks that impede the widespread application of image matting: the reliance on user-provided trimaps and the heavy model sizes. In this paper, we propose a trimap-free natural image matting method with a lightweight model. With a lightweight basic convolution block, we build a two-stages framework: Segmentation Network (SN) is designed to capture sufficient semantics and classify the pixels into unknown, foreground and background regions; Mat…
Different from conventional image matting, which either requires user-defined scribbles/trimap to extract a specific foreground object or directly extracts all the foreground objects in the image indiscriminately, we introduce a new task named Referring Image Matting (RIM) in this paper, which aims to extract the meticulous alpha matte of the specific object that best matches the given natural language description, thus enabling a more natural and simpler instruction for image matting. First, we establish a large-scale challenging dataset RefMatte by designing a comprehensive image composition…
Over the last few years, deep learning based approaches have achieved outstanding improvements in natural image matting. Many of these methods can generate visually plausible alpha estimations, but typically yield blurry structures or textures in the semitransparent area. This is due to the local ambiguity of transparent objects. One possible solution is to leverage the far-surrounding information to estimate the local opacity. Traditional affinity-based methods often suffer from the high computational complexity, which are not suitable for high resolution alpha estimation. Inspired by affinit…

Automatic human matting is highly desired for many real applications. We investigate recent human matting methods and show that common bad cases happen when semantic human segmentation fails. This indicates that semantic understanding is crucial for robust human matting. From this, we develop a fast yet accurate human matting framework, named Semantic Guided Human Matting (SGHM). It builds on a semantic human segmentation network and introduces a light-weight matting module with only marginal computational cost. Unlike previous works, our framework is data efficient, which requires a small amo…
Natural image matting is a fundamental problem in computational photography and computer vision. Deep neural networks have seen the surge of successful methods in natural image matting in recent years. In contrast to traditional propagation-based matting methods, some top-tier deep image matting approaches tend to perform propagation in the neural network implicitly. A novel structure for more direct alpha matte propagation between pixels is in demand. To this end, this paper presents a hierarchical opacity propagation (HOP) matting method, where the opacity information is propagated in the ne…
Image matting is an important vision problem. The main stream methods for it combine sampling-based methods and propagation-based methods. In this paper, we deal with the combination with a normalized weighting parameter, which could well control the relative relationship between information from sampling and from propagation. A reasonable value range for this parameter is given based on statistics from the standard benchmark dataset. The matting is further improved by introducing semi-supervised learning iterations, which automatically refine the trimap without user's interaction. This is esp…
Natural image matting is an important problem in computer vision and graphics. It is an ill-posed problem when only an input image is available without any external information. While the recent deep learning approaches have shown promising results, they only estimate the alpha matte. This paper presents a context-aware natural image matting method for simultaneous foreground and alpha matte estimation. Our method employs two encoder networks to extract essential information for matting. Particularly, we use a matting encoder to learn local features and a context encoder to obtain more global …
In this paper, we propose an image matting framework called Salient Image Matting to estimate the per-pixel opacity value of the most salient foreground in an image. To deal with a large amount of semantic diversity in images, a trimap is conventionally required as it provides important guidance about object semantics to the matting process. However, creating a good trimap is often expensive and timeconsuming. The SIM framework simultaneously deals with the challenge of learning a wide range of semantics and salient object types in a fully automatic and an end to end manner. Specifically, our …
Natural image matting separates the foreground from background in fractional occupancy which can be caused by highly transparent objects, complex foreground (e.g., net or tree), and/or objects containing very fine details (e.g., hairs). Although conventional matting formulation can be applied to all of the above cases, no previous work has attempted to reason the underlying causes of matting due to various foreground semantics. We show how to obtain better alpha mattes by incorporating into our framework semantic classification of matting regions. Specifically, we consider and learn 20 classes…

We propose a foreground segmentation algorithm that does foreground extraction under different scales and refines the result by matting. First, the input image is filtered and resampled to 5 different resolutions. Then each of them is segmented by adaptive figure-ground classification and the best segmentation is automatically selected by an evaluation score that maximizes the difference between foreground and background. This segmentation is upsampled to the original size, and a corresponding trimap is built. Closed-form matting is employed to label the boundary region, and the result is refi…
Image matting refers to the estimation of the opacity of foreground objects. It requires correct contours and fine details of foreground objects for the matting results. To better accomplish human image matting tasks, we propose the Cascade Image Matting Network with Deformable Graph Refinement, which can automatically predict precise alpha mattes from single human images without any additional inputs. We adopt a network cascade architecture to perform matting from low-to-high resolution, which corresponds to coarse-to-fine optimization. We also introduce the Deformable Graph Refinement (DGR) …
Natural image matting is a fundamental and challenging computer vision task. Conventionally, the problem is formulated as an underconstrained problem. Since the problem is ill-posed, further assumptions on the data distribution are required to make the problem well-posed. For classical matting methods, a commonly adopted assumption is the local smoothness assumption on foreground and background colors. However, the use of such assumptions was not systematically considered for deep learning based matting methods. In this work, we consider two local smoothness assumptions which can help improvin…

Image matting refers to predicting the alpha values of unknown foreground areas from natural images. Prior methods have focused on propagating alpha values from known to unknown regions. However, not all natural images have a specifically known foreground. Images of transparent objects, like glass, smoke, web, etc., have less or no known foreground. In this paper, we propose a Transformer-based network, TransMatting, to model transparent objects with a big receptive field. Specifically, we redesign the trimap as three learnable tri-tokens for introducing advanced semantic features into the sel…

In this paper, a hierarchical image matting model is proposed to extract blood vessels from fundus images. More specifically, a hierarchical strategy utilizing the continuity and extendibility of retinal blood vessels is integrated into the image matting model for blood vessel segmentation. Normally the matting models require the user specified trimap, which separates the input image into three regions manually: the foreground, background and unknown regions. However, since creating a user specified trimap is a tedious and time-consuming task, region features of blood vessels are used to gener…

We propose a method for creating a matte -- the per-pixel foreground color and alpha -- of a person by taking photos or videos in an everyday setting with a handheld camera. Most existing matting methods require a green screen background or a manually created trimap to produce a good matte. Automatic, trimap-free methods are appearing, but are not of comparable quality. In our trimap free approach, we ask the user to take an additional photo of the background without the subject at the time of capture. This step requires a small amount of foresight but is far less time-consuming than creating …
Natural image matting, which separates foreground from background, is a very important intermediate step in recent computer vision algorithms. However, it is severely underconstrained and difficult to solve. State-of-the-art approaches include matting by graph Laplacian, which significantly improves the underconstrained nature by reducing the solution space. However, matting by graph Laplacian is still very difficult to solve and gets much harder as the image size grows: current iterative methods slow down as $\mathcal{O}\left(n^2 \right)$ in the resolution $n$. This creates uncomfortable prac…

We present a novel, purely affinity-based natural image matting algorithm. Our method relies on carefully defined pixel-to-pixel connections that enable effective use of information available in the image. We control the information flow from the known-opacity regions into the unknown region, as well as within the unknown region itself, by utilizing multiple definitions of pixel affinities. Among other forms of information flow, we introduce color-mixture flow, which builds upon local linear embedding and effectively encapsulates the relation between different pixel opacities. Our resulting no…

In this paper, instead of using explicit user input constraints, we employ implicit semantic constraints learned from data and propose an automatic human matting algorithm (SHM). In natural image matting, the goal is to estimate the opacity of the foreground object in the image. This opacity controls the way the foreground and background is blended in transparent regions. In recent years, advances in deep learning have led to many natural image matting algorithms that have achieved outstanding performance in a fully automatic manner. However, most of these algorithms only predict the alpha matte from the image, which is not sufficient to create high-quality compositions. Further, it is not possible to manually interact with these algorithms in any way except by directl…

However, most current methods still have difficulties with handling tiny details, like hairs or furs. In this paper, we argue that recovering these microscopic details relies on low-level but high-definition texture features. However, {these features are downsampled in a very early stage in current encoder-decoder-based models, resulting in the loss of microscopic details}. We present a hierarchical method for segmenting text areas in natural images. The method assumes that the text is written with a contrasting color on a more or less uniform background. But no assumption is made regarding the language or character set used to write the text. In particular, the text can contain simple graphics or symbols. The key feature of our approach is that we first concentrate on finding the background of the text, before testing whether there is actually text on the background. Since uniform areas are easy to find in natural images, and since text backgrounds define areas …
