Image matting refers to extracting precise alpha matte from natural images, and it plays a critical role in various downstream applications, such as image editing. Despite being an ill-posed problem, traditional methods have been trying to solve it for decades. The emergence of deep learning has revolutionized the field of image matting and given birth to multiple new techniques, including automatic, interactive, and referring image matting. This paper presents a comprehensive review of recent advancements in image matting in the era of deep learning. We focus on two fundamental sub-tasks: auxiliary input-based image matting, which involves user-defined input to predict the alpha matte, and automatic image matting, which generates results without any manual intervention. We systematically review the existing methods for these two tasks according to their task settings and network structures and provide a summary of their advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, we introduce the commonly used image matting datasets and evaluate the performance of representative matting methods both quantitatively and qualitatively. Finally, we discuss relevant applications of image matting and highlight existing challenges and potential opportunities for future research. We also maintain a public repository to track the rapid development of deep image matting at https://github.com/JizhiziLi/matting-survey.

Extracting accurate foregrounds from natural images benefits many downstream applications such as film production and augmented reality. However, the furry characteristics and various appearance of the foregrounds, e.g., animal and portrait, challenge existing matting methods, which usually require extra user inputs such as trimap or scribbles. To resolve these problems, we study the distinct roles of semantics and details for image matting and decompose the task into two parallel sub-tasks: high-level semantic segmentation and low-level details matting. Specifically, we propose a novel Glance…
Three-dimensional (3D) images, such as CT, MRI, and PET, are common in medical imaging applications and important in clinical diagnosis. Semantic ambiguity is a typical feature of many medical image labels. It can be caused by many factors, such as the imaging properties, pathological anatomy, and the weak representation of the binary masks, which brings challenges to accurate 3D segmentation. In 2D medical images, using soft masks instead of binary masks generated by image matting to characterize lesions can provide rich semantic information, describe the structural characteristics of lesions…
Different from conventional image matting, which either requires user-defined scribbles/trimap to extract a specific foreground object or directly extracts all the foreground objects in the image indiscriminately, we introduce a new task named Referring Image Matting (RIM) in this paper, which aims to extract the meticulous alpha matte of the specific object that best matches the given natural language description, thus enabling a more natural and simpler instruction for image matting. First, we establish a large-scale challenging dataset RefMatte by designing a comprehensive image composition…

Usually, lesions are not isolated but are associated with the surrounding tissues. For example, the growth of a tumour can depend on or infiltrate into the surrounding tissues. Due to the pathological nature of the lesions, it is challenging to distinguish their boundaries in medical imaging. However, these uncertain regions may contain diagnostic information. Therefore, the simple binarization of lesions by traditional binary segmentation can result in the loss of diagnostic information. In this work, we introduce the image matting into the 3D scenes and use the alpha matte, i.e., a soft mask…

As humans, we can remember certain visuals in great detail, and sometimes even after viewing them once. What is even more interesting is that humans tend to remember and forget the same things, suggesting that there might be some general internal characteristics of an image to encode and discard similar types of information. Research suggests that some pictures tend to be memorized more than others. The ability of an image to be remembered by different viewers is one of its intrinsic properties. In visualization and photography, creating memorable images is a difficult task. Hence, to solve th…

Registration is a transformation estimation problem between two point clouds, which has a unique and critical role in numerous computer vision applications. The developments of optimization-based methods and deep learning methods have improved registration robustness and efficiency. Recently, the combinations of optimization-based and deep learning methods have further improved performance. However, the connections between optimization-based and deep learning methods are still unclear. Moreover, with the recent development of 3D sensors and 3D reconstruction techniques, a new research directio…

Deep learning techniques have led to remarkable breakthroughs in the field of generic object detection and have spawned a lot of scene-understanding tasks in recent years. Scene graph has been the focus of research because of its powerful semantic representation and applications to scene understanding. Scene Graph Generation (SGG) refers to the task of automatically mapping an image into a semantic structural scene graph, which requires the correct labeling of detected objects and their relationships. Although this is a challenging task, the community has proposed a lot of SGG approaches and a…

The capacity to recognize faces under varied poses is a fundamental human ability that presents a unique challenge for computer vision systems. Compared to frontal face recognition, which has been intensively studied and has gradually matured in the past few decades, pose-invariant face recognition (PIFR) remains a largely unsolved problem. However, PIFR is crucial to realizing the full potential of face recognition for real-world applications, since face recognition is intrinsically a passive biometric technology for recognizing uncooperative subjects. In this paper, we discuss the inherent d…
As a special type of transformer, Vision Transformers (ViTs) are used to various computer vision applications (CV), such as image recognition. There are several potential problems with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that can be solved with ViTs. For image coding tasks like compression, super-resolution, segmentation, and denoising, different variants of the ViTs are used. The purpose of this survey is to present the first application of ViTs in CV. The survey is the first of its kind on ViTs for CVs to the best of our knowledge. In the first step, we classify different CV applications wh…
Semantic segmentation plays a fundamental role in a broad variety of computer vision applications, providing key information for the global understanding of an image. Yet, the state-of-the-art models rely on large amount of annotated samples, which are more expensive to obtain than in tasks such as image classification. Since unlabelled data is instead significantly cheaper to obtain, it is not surprising that Unsupervised Domain Adaptation reached a broad success within the semantic segmentation community. This survey is an effort to summarize five years of this incredibly rapidly growing fie…

Video skimming, also known as dynamic video summarization, generates a temporally abridged version of a given video. Skimming can be achieved by identifying significant components either in uni-modal or multi-modal features extracted from the video. Being dynamic in nature, video skimming, through temporal connectivity, allows better understanding of the video from its summary. Having this obvious advantage, recently, video skimming has drawn the focus of many researchers benefiting from the easy availability of the required computing resources. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey…
Deep neural networks are at the forefront of machine learning research. However, despite achieving impressive performance on complex tasks, they can be very sensitive: Small perturbations of inputs can be sufficient to induce incorrect behavior. Such perturbations, called adversarial examples, are intentionally designed to test the network's sensitivity to distribution drifts. Given their surprisingly small size, a wide body of literature conjectures on their existence and how this phenomenon can be mitigated. In this article we discuss the impact of adversarial examples on security, safety, a…

We discuss the foundation of the techniques to analyze their performances, strengths and limitations. We also d…
Dietary studies showed that dietary-related problem such as obesity is associated with other chronic diseases like hypertension, irregular blood sugar levels, and increased risk of heart attacks. The primary cause of these problems is poor lifestyle choices and unhealthy dietary habits, which are manageable using interactive mHealth apps. However, traditional dietary monitoring systems using manual food logging suffer from imprecision, underreporting, time consumption, and low adherence. Recent dietary monitoring systems tackle these challenges by automatic assessment of dietary intake through…

Over the past decade, domain adaptation has become a widely studied branch of transfer learning that aims to improve performance on target domains by leveraging knowledge from the source domain. Conventional domain adaptation methods often assume access to both source and target domain data simultaneously, which may not be feasible in real-world scenarios due to privacy and confidentiality concerns. As a result, the research of Source-Free Domain Adaptation (SFDA) has drawn growing attention in recent years, which only utilizes the source-trained model and unlabeled target data to adapt to the…
