We present a hierarchical method for segmenting text areas in natural images. The method assumes that the text is written with a contrasting color on a more or less uniform background. But no assumption is made regarding the language or character set used to write the text. In particular, the text can contain simple graphics or symbols. The key feature of our approach is that we first concentrate on finding the background of the text, before testing whether there is actually text on the background. Since uniform areas are easy to find in natural images, and since text backgrounds define areas which contain "holes" (where the text is written) we thus look for uniform areas containing "holes" and label them as text backgrounds candidates. Each candidate area is then further tested for the presence of text within its convex hull. We tested our method on a database of 65 images including English and Urdu text. The method correctly segmented all the text areas in 63 of these images, and in only 4 of these were areas that do not contain text also segmented.

In this article, we propose an automatic method for the segmentation of pollen grains from microscope images, followed by the automatic segmentation of their exine. The objective of exine segmentation is to separate the pollen grain in two regions of interest: exine and inner part. A coarse-to-fine approach ensures a smooth and accurate segmentation of both structures. As a rough stage, grain segmentation is performed by a procedure involving clustering and morphological operations, while the exine is approximated by an iterative procedure consisting in consecutive cropping steps of the pollen…

This paper presents a method for automatic video object segmentation based on the fusion of motion stream, appearance stream, and instance-aware segmentation. The proposed scheme consists of a two-stream fusion network and an instance segmentation network. The two-stream fusion network again consists of motion and appearance stream networks, which extract long-term temporal and spatial information, respectively. Unlike the existing two-stream fusion methods, the proposed fusion network blends the two streams at the original resolution for obtaining accurate segmentation boundary. We develop a …

Preprocessing was performed for removing the outer black border. Jaccard Index was measured to evaluate the performance of the segmentation method. Animal biometrics is a challenging task. In the literature, many algorithms have been used, e.g. penguin chest recognition, elephant ears recognition and leopard stripes pattern recognition, but to use technology to a large extent in this area of research, still a lot of work has to be done. One important target in animal biometrics is to automate the segmentation process, so in this paper we propose a segmentation algorithm for extracting the spots of Diploglossus millepunctatus, an endangered lizard species. The automatic segmentation is achieved with a combination of preprocessing, active c…

We propose an automatic method for generating high-quality annotations for depth-based hand segmentation, and introduce a large-scale hand segmentation dataset. Existing datasets are typically limited to a single hand. By exploiting the visual cues given by an RGBD sensor and a pair of colored gloves, we automatically generate dense annotations for two hand segmentation. This lowers the cost/complexity of creating high quality datasets, and makes it easy to expand the dataset in the future. We further show that existing datasets, even with data augmentation, are not sufficient to train a hand …

Automatic segmentation of objects from a single image is a challenging problem which generally requires training on large number of images. We consider the problem of automatically segmenting only the dynamic objects from a given pair of images of a scene captured from different positions. We exploit dense correspondences along with saliency measures in order to first localize the interest points on the dynamic objects from the two images. We propose a novel approach based on techniques from computational geometry in order to automatically segment the dynamic objects from both the images using…

Solving the Maximum a Posteriori on Markov Random Field, MRF-MAP, is a prevailing method in recent interactive image segmentation tools. Manual segmentation of brain tumor extent from 3D MRI volumes is a very time-consuming task and the performance is highly relied on operator's experience. Previous research has identified the visual search for these errors as the bottleneck in interactive proofreading. To aid error correction, we develop two classifiers that automatically recommend candidate merges and splits to the user. These classifiers use a convolutional neural network (CNN) that has been trained with errors in automatic segmentations against expert-labeled ground truth. Existing automatic segmentation methods are mainly based on fully supervised learning and have an extremely high demand for precise annotations, which are very costly and time-consuming to obtain. To address this problem, we proposed an automatic CT segmentation method based on weakly supervised learning, by which one could train an accurate segmentation model only with weak annotations in the form of bounding boxes. The proposed method is composed of two steps: 1) generating pseudo masks with bounding box annotation…

Inspired by the practicality and applicability of the semi-automatic approach, this paper proposes a novel deep neural network architecture, namely SideInfNet that effectively integrates features learnt from images with side…

A novel method for segmenting bright objects from dark background for grayscale image is proposed. The concept of this method can be stated simply as: to pick out the local-thinnest bands on the grayscale grade-map. It turns out to be a threshold-based method with local adaptive thresholds, where each local threshold is determined by requiring the average normal-direction gradient on the object boundary to be local minimal. The method is highly automatic and the segmentation mimics a man's natural expectation even the object boundaries are fuzzy.

Automatic brain tumor segmentation plays an important role for diagnosis, surgical planning and treatment assessment of brain tumors. Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely used for this task. Due to the relatively small data set for training, data augmentation at training time has been commonly used for better performance of CNNs. Recent works also demonstrated the usefulness of using augmentation at test time, in addition to training time, for achieving more robust predictions. We investigate how test-time augmentation can improve CNNs' performance for brain tumor segment…

Image segmentation techniques are predominately based on parameter-laden optimization. The objective function typically involves weights for balancing competing image fidelity and segmentation regularization cost terms. Setting these weights suitably has been a painstaking, empirical process. We propose a novel technique that autonomously balances these terms in a spatially-adaptive manner t…
