In an effort to improve our understanding of the spiral arm structure of the Milky Way, we use Classical Cepheids (CCs) to increase the number of young tracers on the far side of the Galactic disk with accurately determined distances. We use a sample of 30 CCs, discovered using near-infrared photometry from the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea survey (VVV) and classified based on their radial velocities and metallicities. We combine them with another 20 CCs from the literature for which VVV photometry is available. The compiled sample of CCs with homogeneously computed distances based on VVV infrared photometry was employed as a proof of concept to trace the spiral structure in the poorly explored far side of the disk. Although the use of CCs has some caveats, these variables are currently the only available young tracers in the far side disk for which a numerous sample with accurate distances can be obtained. Therefore, a larger sample could allow us to make a significant step forward in our understanding of the Milky Way disk as a whole. We present preliminary evidence that CCs favor: a spiral arm model with two main arms (Perseus and Scutum-Centaurus) branching out into four arms at galactocentric distances, $R_\mathrm {GC}\gtrsim5-6\,\mathrm{kpc}$; the extension of the Scutum-Centaurus arm behind the Galactic center; a possible connection between the Perseus arm and the Norma tangency direction. The current sample of CCs in the far side of the Galaxy are in the mid-plane, arguing against the presence of a severely warped disk at small Galactocentric distances ($R_\mathrm {GC}\lesssim12\,\mathrm{kpc}$) in the studied area. The discovery and characterization of CCs at near-IR wavelengths appears to be a promising tool to complement studies based on other spiral arm tracers and extend them to the far side of our Galaxy.
We have re-analyzed continuum and recombination lines radio data available in the literature in order to derive the luminosity function (LF) of Galactic HII regions. The study is performed by considering the first and fourth Galactic quadrants independently. We estimate the completeness level of the sample in the fourth quadrant at 5 Jy, and the one in the first quadrant at 2 Jy. We show that the two samples (fourth or first quadrant) include, as well as giant and super-giant HII regions, a significant number of sub-giant sources. The LF is obtained, in each Galactic quadrant, with a generaliz…
We take advantage of the red clump stars to build the relation of the optical extinction (AV) and distance in each direction of supernova remnants (SNRs) with known extinction in the fourth Galactic quadrant. The distances of 9 SNRs are well determined by this method. Their uncertainties range from 10% to 30%, which is significantly improved for 8 SNRs, G279.0+1.1, G284.3-1.8, G296.1-0.5, G299.2-2.9, G308.4-1.4, G309.2-0.6, G309.8- 2.6, G332.4-0.4. In addition, SNR G284.3-1.8 with the new distance of 5.5 kpc is not likely associated with the PSR J1016-5857 at 3 kpc.
Using atomic hydrogen (HI) data from the VLA Galactic Plane Survey we measure the HI terminal velocity as a function of longitude for the first quadrant of the Milky Way. We use these data, together with our previous work on the fourth Galactic quadrant, to produce a densely sampled, uniformly measured, rotation curve of the Northern and Southern Milky Way between $3~{\rm kpc} < R < 8~{\rm kpc}$. We determine a new joint rotation curve fit for the first and fourth quadrants, which is consistent with the fit we published in McClure-Griffiths \& Dickey (2007) and can be used for estimating kinem…
Filamentary structures are common morphological features of the cold, molecular interstellar medium (ISM). Recent studies have discovered massive, hundred-parsec-scale filaments that may be connected to the large-scale, Galactic spiral arm structure. Addressing the nature of these Giant Molecular Filaments (GMFs) requires a census of their occurrence and properties. We perform a systematic search of GMFs in the fourth Galactic quadrant and determine their basic physical properties. We identify GMFs based on their dust extinction signatures in near- and mid-infrared and velocity structure probe…
We present homogeneous and accurate iron abundances for almost four dozen (47) of Galactic Cepheids using high-spectral resolution (R$\sim$40,000) high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N $\ge$ 100) optical spectra collected with UVES at VLT. A significant fraction of the sample (32) is located in the inner disk (RG $le$ 6.9 kpc) and for half of them we provide new iron abundances. Current findings indicate a steady increase in iron abundance when approaching the innermost regions of the thin disk. The metallicity is super-solar and ranges from 0.2 dex for RG $\sim$ 6.5 kpc to 0.4 dex for RG $\sim$ 5.5…
Distance measurements to molecular clouds are essential and important. We present directly measured distances to 169 molecular clouds in the fourth quadrant of the Milky Way. Based on the near-infrared photometry from the Two Micron All Sky Survey and the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea Survey, we select red clump stars in the overlapping directions of the individual molecular clouds and infer the bin averaged extinction values and distances to these stars. We track the extinction versus distance profiles of the sightlines toward the clouds and fit them with Gaussian dust distribution models…
Aims: This paper has two main objectives: (1) To determine the intrinsic properties of 16 faint and mostly unstudied open clusters in the poorly known sector of the Galaxy at 270$^\circ-$300$^\circ$, to probe the Milky Way structure in future investigations. (2) To address previously reported systematics in Gaia DR2 parallaxes by comparing the cluster distances derived from photometry with those derived from parallaxes. Methods: Deep UBVI photometry of 16 open clusters was carried out. Observations were reduced and analyzed in an automaticway using the ASteCA package to get individual distance…

In the Gaia era, the membership analysis and parameter determination of open clusters (OCs) are more accurate. We performed a census of OC's classical Cepheids based on Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) and obtained a sample of 33 OC Cepheids fulfilling the constraints of the spatial position, proper motion, parallax and evolution state. 13 of 33 OC Cepheids are newly discovered. Among them, CM Sct is the first first-crossing Cepheids with direct evidence of evolution. DP Vel is likely a fourth- or fifth-crossing Cepheids. Based on independent distances from OCs, W_1-band period-luminosity rela…
Using data from the Galactic All-Sky Survey, we have compared the properties and distribution of HI clouds in the disk-halo transition at the tangent points in mirror-symmetric regions of the first quadrant (QI) and fourth quadrant (QIV) of the Milky Way. Individual clouds are found to have identical properties in the two quadrants. However, there are 3 times as many clouds in QI as in QIV, their scale height is twice as large, and their radial distribution is more uniform. We attribute these major asymmetries to the formation of the clouds in the spiral arms of the Galaxy, and suggest that th…
Using the astrometry and integrated photometry from the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3), we map the density variations in the distribution of young Upper Main Sequence (UMS) stars, open clusters and classical Cepheids in the Galactic disk within several kiloparsecs of the Sun. Maps of relative over/under-dense regions for UMS stars in the Galactic disk are derived, using both bivariate kernel density estimators and wavelet transformations. The resulting overdensity maps exhibit large-scale arches, that extend in a clumpy but coherent way over the entire sampled volume, indicating the location…

This paper is an initial stage of consideration of the general problem of joint modeling of the vertical structure of a Galactic flat subsystem and the average surface of the disk of the Galaxy, taking into account the natural and measurement dispersions. We approximate the average surface of the Galactic disk with a polynomial model and determine its parameters by minimizing the squared deviations of objects along the normal to the model surface. The developed method allows us to simultaneously identify significant details of the Galactic warping and estimate the offset $z_\odot$ of the Sun r…
Based on data from the ongoing OGLE Galaxy Variability Survey (OGLE GVS) we have verified observed properties of stars detected by the near-infrared VVV survey in a direction near the Galactic plane at longitude l~-27 deg and recently tentatively classified as classical Cepheids belonging to a, hence claimed, dwarf galaxy at a distance of about 90 kpc from the Galactic Center. Three of four stars are detected in the OGLE GVS I-band images. We show that two of the objects are not variable at all and the third one with a period of 5.695 d and a nearly sinusoidal light curve of an amplitude of 0.…
Photometric CCD {\it UBVI}$_C$ photometry obtained for 4860 stars surrounding the embedded southern cluster SAI~113 (Skiff~8) is used to examine the reddening in the field and derive the distance to the cluster and nearby van~Genderen~1. Spectroscopic color excesses for bright cluster stars, photometric reddenings for A3 dwarfs, and dereddening of cluster stars imply that the reddening and extinction laws match results derived for other young clusters in Carina: E$_{U-B}/$E$_{B-V} \simeq 0.64$ and $R_V \simeq 4$. SAI~113 displays features that may be linked to a history of dynamical interactio…
We present the discovery of new star clusters in the central plane region ($|l|<30°$ and $|b|<6°$) of the Milky Way. In order to overcome the extinction problem and the spatial limit of previous surveys, we use the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) data to find clusters. We also use other infrared survey data in the archive for additional analysis. We find 923 new clusters, of which 202 clusters are embedded clusters. These clusters are concentrated toward the Galactic plane and show a symmetric distribution with respect to the Galactic latitude. The embedded clusters show a stronger …
In the present work we investigate the properties of 18 embedded clusters (ECs). The sample includes 11 previously known clusters and we report the discovery of 7 ECs on WISE images, thus complementing our recent list of 437 new clusters. The main goal is to use such clusters to shed new light on the Galactic structure by tracing the spiral arms with cluster distances. Our results favour a four-armed spiral pattern tracing three arms, Sagitarius-Carina, Perseus, and the Outer arm. The Sagitarius-Carina spiral arm is probed in the borderline of the third and fourth quadrants at a distance from …
Using 21cm HI observations from the Parkes Radio Telescope's Galactic All-Sky Survey, we measure 255 HI clouds in the lower Galactic halo that are located near the tangent points at 16.9 < l < 35.3 degrees and |b| < 20 degrees. The clouds have a median mass of 700 Msun and a median distance from the Galactic plane of 660 pc. This first Galactic quadrant (QI) region is symmetric to a region of the fourth quadrant (QIV) studied previously using the same data set and measurement criteria. The properties of the individual clouds in the two quadrants are quite similar suggesting that they belong to…
Context. The astrometric satellite Gaia is expected to significantly increase our knowledge as to the properties of the Milky Way. The Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) provides the most precise parallaxes for many OB stars, which can be used to delineate the Galactic spiral structure. Aims. We investigate the local spiral structure with the largest sample of spectroscopically confirmed young OB stars available to date, and we compare it with what was traced by the parallax measurements of masers. Methods. A sample consisting of three different groups of massive young stars, including O-B2…

The main aim of this experiment is to provide a complete census of old (t > 10 Gyr, RR Lyrae, type II Cepheids, red horizontal branch), intermediate age (red clump, Miras) and young (classical Cepheids) stellar tracers across the Galactic Bulge. To fully exploit the unique photometric quality of LSST images, we plan to perform a Shallow minisurvey (ugrizy, -20 < l < 20 deg, -15 < b < 10 deg) and a Deep minisurvey (izy, -20 < l < 20 deg, -3 < b < 3 deg). The former one is aimed at constraining the 3D structure of the galactic Bulge across the four quadrants, and in particular, the transition be…
The spiral structure of the Milky Way is not yet well determined. The keys to understanding this structure are to increase the number of reliable spiral tracers and to determine their distances as accurately as possible. HII regions, giant molecular clouds (GMCs), and 6.7-GHz methanol masers are closely related to high mass star formation, and hence they are excellent spiral tracers. We update the catalogs of Galactic HII regions, GMCs, and 6.7-GHz methanol masers, and then outline the spiral structure of the Milky Way. We collected data for more than 2500 known HII regions, 1300 GMCs, and 900…
Three recent surveys of 21-cm line emission in the Galactic plane, combining single dish and interferometer observations to achieve resolution of 1 arcmin to 2 arcmin, 1 km/s, and good brightness sensitivity, have provided some 650 absorption spectra with corresponding emission spectra for study of the distribution of warm and cool phase H I in the interstellar medium. These emission-absorption spectrum pairs are used to study the temperature of the interstellar neutral hydrogen in the outer disk of the Milky Way, outside the solar circle, to a radius of 25 kpc. The cool neutral medium is dist…
We have determined the three-dimensional structure of the Magellanic Clouds and Magellanic Bridge using over $9\,000$ Classical Cepheids (CCs) and almost $23\,000$ RR~Lyrae (RRL) stars from the fourth phase of the OGLE project. For the CCs we calculated distances based on period-luminosity relations. CCs in the LMC are situated mainly in the bar that shows no offset from the plane of the LMC. The northern arm is also very prominent with an additional smaller arm. Both are located closer to us than the entire sample. The SMC has a non-planar structure that can be described as an ellipsoid exten…
Context. The Gaia mission has released the second data set (Gaia DR2), which contains parallaxes and proper motions for a large number of massive, young stars. Aims. We investigate the spiral structure in the solar neighborhood revealed by Gaia DR2 and compare it with that depicted by VLBI maser parallaxes. Methods. We examined three samples with different constraints on parallax uncertainty and distance errors and stellar spectral types: (1) all OB stars with parallax errors of less than 10%; (2) only O-type stars with 0.1 mas errors imposed and with parallax distance errors of less than 0.2 …
The Columbia - U. de Chile CO Survey of the Southern Milky Way is used for separating the CO(1-0) emission of the fourth Galactic quadrant within the solar circle into its dominant components, giant molecular clouds (GMCs). After the subtraction of an axisymmetric model of the CO background emission in the inner Southern Galaxy, 92 GMCs are identified, and for 87 of them the two-fold distance ambiguity is solved. Their total molecular mass is M(H2) = 1.14 +/- 0.05 x 10^8 Msolar accounting for around 40% of the molecular mass estimated from an axisymmetric analysis of the H2 volume density in t…
We describe a new mm-wave molecular-line mapping survey of the southern Galactic Plane and its first data releases. The Three-mm Ultimate Mopra Milky Way Survey (ThrUMMS) maps a 60°x2° sector of our Galaxy's fourth quadrant, using a combination of fast mapping techniques with the Mopra radio telescope, simultaneously in the J=1-0 lines of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, and CN near 112 GHz at ~arcminute and ~0.3 km s$^{-1}$ resolution, with ~2 K channel$^{-1}$ sensitivity for $^{12}$CO and ~1 K channel$^{-1}$ for the other transitions. The calibrated data cubes from these observations are mad…
We present a large, homogeneous catalogue of molecular clouds within 4 kpc from the Sun at low Galactic latitudes ($|b|$ $<$ 10\degr) with unprecedented accurate distance determinations. Based on the three-dimensional dust reddening map and estimates of colour excesses and distances of over 32 million stars presented in Chen et al, we have identified 567 dust/molecular clouds with a hierarchical structure identification method and obtained their distance estimates by a dust model fitting algorithm. The typical distance uncertainty is less than 5 per cent. As far as we know, this is the first l…
The SEDIGISM (Structure, Excitation and Dynamics of the Inner Galactic Interstellar Medium) survey used the APEX telescope to map 84 deg^2 of the Galactic plane between l = -60 deg and l = +31 deg in several molecular transitions, including 13CO(2-1) and C18O(2-1), thus probing the moderately dense (~10^3 cm^-3) component of the interstellar medium. With an angular resolution of 30'' and a typical 1-sigma sensitivity of 0.8-1.0 K at 0.25 km/s velocity resolution, it gives access to a wide range of structures, from individual star-forming clumps to giant molecular clouds and complexes. The cove…
