The Ericksen-Leslie system is a fundamental hydrodynamic model that describes the evolution of incompressible liquid crystal flows of nematic type. In this paper, we prove the uniqueness of global weak solutions to the general Ericksen-Leslie system with a Ginzburg-Landau type approximation in a two dimensional periodic domain. The proof is based on some delicate energy estimates for the difference of two weak solutions within a suitable functional framework that is less regular than the usual one at the natural energy level, combined with the Osgood lemma involving a specific double-logarithmic type modulus of continuity. We overcome the essential mathematical difficulties arising from those highly nonlinear terms in the Leslie stress tensor and in particular, the lack of maximum principle for the director equation due to the stretching effect of the fluid on the director field. Our argument makes full use of the coupling structure as well as the dissipative nature of the system, and relies on some techniques from harmonic analysis and paradifferential calculus in the periodic setting.
We prove the global existence of weak solution for two dimensional Ericksen-Leslie system with the Leslie stress and general Ericksen stress under the physical constrains on the Leslie coefficients. We also prove the local well-posedness of the Ericksen-Leslie system in two and three spatial dimensions.
Starting from Beris-Edwards system for the liquid crystal, we present a rigorous derivation of Ericksen-Leslie system with general Ericksen stress and Leslie stress by using the Hilbert expansion method.
In this paper, we study the connection between the Ericksen-Leslie equations and the Beris-Edwards equations in dimension two. It is shown that the weak solutions to the Beris-Edwards equations converge to the one to the Ericksen-Leslie equations as the elastic coefficient tends to zero. Moreover, the limiting weak solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie equations may have singular points.
In this paper, we investigate the steady simplified Ericksen-Leslie system. For three dimension, we obtain Liouville theorems if $u$ and $\nabla d$ satisfy the Galdi's[1] condition, or some decay conditions. Note that the simplified Ericksen-Leslie system becomes Navier-Stokes equations when $d$ is constant vector.
We establish the local well-posedness of the general Ericksen-Leslie system in liquid crystals with the initial velocity and director field in $H^1 \times H_b^2$. In particular, we prove that the solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau approximation system converge smoothly to the solution of the Ericksen-Leslie system for any $t \in (0,T^\ast)$ with a maximal existence time $T^\ast$ of the Ericksen- Leslie system.
We consider the compressible Ericksen-Leslie system of liquid crystal flows in one dimension. A global weak solution is constructed with initial density $ρ_0\geq 0$ and $ρ_0\in L^γ$ for $γ>1$.
In this paper we investigate the role of Parodi's relation in the well-posedness and stability of the general Ericksen-Leslie system modeling nematic liquid crystal flows. First, we give a formal physical derivation of the Ericksen-Leslie system through an appropriate energy variational approach under Parodi's relation, in which we can distinguish the conservative/dissipative parts of the induced elastic stress. Next, we prove global well-posedness and long-time behavior of the Ericksen-Leslie system under the assumption that the viscosity $μ_4$ is sufficiently large. Finally, under Parodi's r…
In this note we prove the existence and uniqueness of local maximal smooth solution of the stochastic simplified Ericksen-Leslie systems modelling the dynamics of nematic liquid crystals under stochastic perturbations.
In this paper, we rigorously justify the connection between Qian-Sheng's inertial $Q$-tensor model and the full Ericksen-Leslie model for the liquid crystal flow. By using the Hilbert expansion method, we prove that, when the elastic coefficients tend to zero(also called the uniaxial limit), the solution to the Qian-Sheng's inertial model will converge to the solution to the full inertial Ericksen-Leslie system.
We derive a model describing the evolution of a nematic liquid-crystal material under the action of thermal effects. The first and second laws of thermodynamics lead to an extension of the general Ericksen-Leslie system where the Leslie stress tensor and the Oseen-Frank energy density are considered in their general forms. The work postulate proposed by Ericksen-Leslie is traduced in terms of entropy production. We finally analyze the global-in-time well-posedness of the system for small initial data in the framework of Besov spaces.
We study a simplified inertial Ericksen-Leslie system for the nematic liquid crystal flow, which can be viewed as a system coupling Navier-Stokes equations and wave map equations. We prove the global existence of classical solution with initial data near equilibrium.
In this paper, we prove the local well-posedness of the Ericksen-Leslie system, and the global well-posednss for small initial data under the physical constrain condition on the Leslie coefficients, which ensures that the energy of the system is dissipated. Instead of the Ginzburg-Landau approximation, we construct an approximate system with the dissipated energy based on a new formulation of the system.
In this paper, we consider Cauchy problem of simplified Ericksen-Leslie system in dimension three. We establish the unique existence of global smooth solution under some nonlinear conditions on initial data. However, we do not need small conditions on initial data.
We establish the subconvergence of weak solutions to the Ginzburg-Landau approximation to global-in-time weak solutions of the Ericksen-Leslie model for nematic liquid crystals on the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$. The key argument is a variation of concentration-cancellation methods originally introduced by DiPerna and Majda to investigate the weak stability of solutions to the (steady-state) Euler equations.
The Ericksen-Leslie model for nematic liquid crystals in a bounded domain with general Leslie and isotropic Ericksen stress is studied in the case of a non-isothermal and incompressible fluid. This system is shown to be locally well-posed in the $L_p$-setting, and a dynamic theory is developed. The equilibria are identified and shown to be normally stable. In particular, a local solution extends to a unique, global strong solution provided the initial data are close to an equilibrium or the solution is eventually bounded in the topology of the natural state manifold. In this case, the solution…
A quasistatic model due to Ericksen and Leslie describing incompressible liquid crystals is studied for a general class of free energies. Global existence of weak solutions is proven via a Galerkin approximation with eigenfunctions of a strongly elliptic operator. A novelty is that the principal part of the differential operator appearing in the director equation can be nonlinear.
This paper concerns the uniqueness of weak solutions to the Cauchy problem to the Ericksen-Leslie system of liquid crystal models in $\mathbb R^2$, with both general Leslie stress tensors and general Oseen-Frank density. It is shown here that such a system admits a unique weak solution provided that the Frank coefficients are close to some positive constant, which solves an interesting open problem. One of the main ideas of our proof is to perform suitable energy estimates at level one order lower than the natural basic energy estimates for the Ericksen-Leslie system.
In this paper, we first establish the regularity theorem for suitable weak solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie system in dimensions two. Building on such a regularity, we then establish the existence of a global weak solution to the Ericksen-Leslie system in $\mathbb R^2$ for any initial data in the energy space, under the physical constraint conditions on the Leslie coefficients ensuring the dissipation of energy of the system, which is smooth away from at most finitely many times. This extends earlier works by Lin,Lin, and Wang on a simplified nematic liquid crystal flow in dimensions two.
In this paper, we study the long-time behavior of full Ericksen-Leslie system modeling the hydrodynamics of nematic liquid crystals between two dimensional unit spheres. Under a weaker assumption for Leslie's coefficients, we give the key energy inequality for the global weak solution. At last, inspired by the conditions on the simplified system, we establish several sufficient conditions which guarantee the uniform convergence of the system in $L^2$ and $H^k$ spaces as time tends to infinity under small initial data.
We establish the global existence of weak martingale solutions to the simplified stochastic Ericksen--Leslie system modeling the nematic liquid crystal flow driven by Wiener-type noises on the two-dimensional bounded domains. The construction of solutions is based on the convergence of Ginzburg--Landau approximations. To achieve such a convergence, we first utilize the concentration-cancellation method for the Ericksen stress tensor fields based on a Pohozaev type argument, and second the Skorokhod compactness theorem, which is built upon a uniform energy estimate.
We study the Ericksen-Leslie system equipped with a quadratic free energy functional. The norm restriction of the director is incorporated by a standard relaxation technique using a double-well potential. We use the relative energy concept, often applied in the context of compressible Euler- or related systems of fluid dynamics, to prove weak-strong uniqueness of solutions. A main novelty is that the relative energy inequality is proved for a system with a nonconvex energy.
In this article, we prove the existence of measure-valued solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie system equipped with the Oseen-Frank energy. We introduce the concept of generalized gradient Young measures. Via a Galerkin approximation, we show the existence of weak solutions to a regularized system and attain measure-valued solutions for vanishing regularization. Additionally, it is shown that the measure-valued solution fulfills an energy inequality.
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem to the Ericksen-Leslie system of liquid crystals in $\mathbb R^3$. Global well-posedness of strong solutions are obtained under the condition that the product of $\|u_0\|_2+\|\nabla d_0\|_2$ and $\|\nabla u_0\|_2+\|\nabla^2d_0\|_2$ is suitably small. This result can be viewed as a supplement to the local existence and blow up criteria discussed in \cite{Hong1}.
In this paper we study the zero inertia limit that is from the hyperbolic to parabolic Ericksen-Leslie's liquid crystal flow. By introducing an initial layer and constructing an energy norm and energy dissipation functional depending on the solutions of the limiting system, we derive a global in time uniform energy bound to the remainder system under the small size of the initial data.
We investigate the Ericksen-Leslie system for the Oseen-Frank model with unequal Frank elastic constants in $\mathbb{R}^3$. To generalize the result of Hineman-Wang \cite{HW}, we prove existence of solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie system with initial data having small $L^3_{uloc}$-norm. In particular, we use a new idea to obtain a local $L^3$-estimate through interpolation inequalities and a covering argument, which is different from the one in \cite{HW}. Moreover, for uniqueness of solutions, we find a new way to remove the restriction on the Frank elastic constants by using the rotation inva…
In this paper, we consider the initial and boundary value problem of Ericksen-Leslie system modeling nematic liquid crystal flows in dimension three. Two examples of singularity at finite time are constructed. The first example is constructed in a special axisymmetric class with suitable axisymmetric initial and boundary data, while the second example is constructed for an initial data with small energy but nontrivial topology. A counter example of maximum principle to the system is constructed by utilizing the Poiseuille flow in dimension one.
We study the Ericksen-Leslie's parabolic-hyperbolic liquid crystal model in compressible flow. Inspired by our study for incompressible case \cite{Jiang-Luo-arXiv-2017} and some techniques from compressible Navier-Stokes equations, we prove the local-in-time existence of the classical solution to the system with finite initial energy, under some constraints on the Leslie coefficients which ensure the basic energy law is dissipative. Furthermore, with an additional assumption on the coefficients which provides a damping effect, and the smallness of the initial energy, the global classical solut…
In this article, we consider the Ericksen-Leslie's hyperbolic system for incompressible liquid crystal model without kinematic transport in three spatial dimensions, which is a nonlinear coupling of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with wave map to $\mathbb{S}^2$. Global regularity for small and smooth initial data near the equilibrium is proved. The proof relies on the idea of space-time resonance.
We study the Ericksen-Leslie's hyperbolic incompressible liquid crystal model. Under some constraints on the Leslie coefficients which ensure the basic energy law is dissipative, we prove the local-in-time existence and uniqueness of the classical solution to the system with finite initial energy. Furthermore, with an additional assumption on the coefficients which provides a damping effect, and the smallness of the initial energy, the unique global classical solution can be established.
We analyze the Ericksen-Leslie system equipped with the Oseen-Frank energy in three space dimensions. Recently, the author introduced the concept of measure-valued solutions to this system and showed the global existence of these generalized solutions. In this paper, we show that suitable measure-valued solutions, which fulfill an associated energy inequality, enjoy the weak-strong uniqueness property, i. e. the measure-valued solution agrees with a strong solution if the latter exists. The weak-strong uniqueness is shown by a relative energy inequality for the associated nonconvex energy func…
In this paper, we consider the boundary value problem of a simplified Ericksen-Leslie system in dimension two with non-slip boundary condition for the velocity field $u$ and time-dependent boundary condition for the director field $d$ of unit length. For such a system, we first establish the existence of a global weak solution that is smooth away from finitely many singular times, then establish the existence of a unique global strong solution that is smooth for $t>0$ under the assumption that the image of boundary data is contained in the hemisphere $\mathbb S^2_+$. Finally, we apply these th…
In this paper we consider the 2D Ericksen-Leslie equations which describes the hydrodynamics of nematic Liquid crystal with external body forces and anisotropic energy modeling the energy of applied external control such as magnetic or electric field. Under general assumptions on the initial data, the external data and the anisotropic energy, we prove the existence and uniqueness of global weak solutions with finitely many singular times. If the initial data and the external forces are sufficiently small, then we establish that the global weak solution does not have any singular times and is r…
In this article we construct global solutions to a simplified Ericksen-Leslie system on $\mathbb{R}^3$. The constructed solutions are twisted and periodic along the $x_3$-axis with period $d = 2π\big/ μ$. Here $μ> 0$ is the twist rate. $d$ is the distance between two planes which are parallel to the $x_1x_2$-plane. Liquid crystal material is placed in the region enclosed by these two planes. Given a well-prepared initial data, our solutions exist classically for all $t \in [0, \infty)$. However these solutions become singular at all points on the $x_3$-axis and escape into third dimension expo…
In this paper we investigate the three dimensional general Ericksen-Leslie (E--L) system with Ginzburg-Landau type approximation modeling nematic liquid crystal flows. First, by overcoming the difficulties from lack of maximum principle for the director equation and high order nonlinearities for the stress tensor, we prove existence of global-in-time weak solutions under physically meaningful boundary conditions and suitable assumptions on the Leslie coefficients, which ensures that the total energy of the E--L system is dissipated. Moreover, for the E--L system with periodic boundary conditio…
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of the Poiseuille flow of full Ericksen-Leslie model for nematic liquid crystals. The model is a coupled system of a parabolic equation for the velocity and a quasilinear wave equation for the director. For a particular choice of several physical parameter values, we construct solutions with smooth initial data and finite energy that produce, in finite time, cusp singularities - blowups of gradients. The formation of cusp singularity is due to local interactions of wave-like characteristics of solutions, which is different from the mechanism of finite…
We analyze the Ericksen--Leslie system equipped with the Oseen--Frank energy in three space dimensions. Recently, the author introduced the concept of dissipative solutions. These solutions show several advantages in comparison to the earlier introduced measure-valued solutions. In this article, we argue that dissipative solutions can be numerically approximated by a relative simple scheme, which fulfills the norm-restriction on the director in every step. We introduce a semi-discrete scheme and derive an approximated version of the relative-energy inequality for solutions of this scheme. Pass…
We analyze the Ericksen-Leslie system equipped with the Oseen-Frank energy in three space dimensions. The new concept of dissipative solutions is introduced. Recently, the author introduced the concept of measure-valued solutions to the considered system and showed global existence as well as weak-strong uniqueness of these generalized solutions. In this paper, we show that the expectation of the measure valued solution is a dissipative solution. The concept of a dissipative solution itself relies on an inequality instead of an equality, but is described by functions instead of parametrized me…
In this manuscript, we consider a highly nonlinear and constrained stochastic PDEs modelling the dynamics of 2-dimensional nematic liquid crystals under random perturbation. This system of SPDEs is also known as the stochastic Ericksen-Leslie equations (SELEs). We discuss the existence of local strong solution to the stochastic Ericksen-Leslie equations. In particular, we study the convergence the stochastic Ginzburg-Landau approximation of SELEs, and prove that the SELEs with initial data in $\sh^1\times \sh^2$ has at least a martingale, local solution which is strong in PDEs sense.
We present a rigorous derivation of the Ericksen-Leslie equation starting from the Doi-Onsager equation. As in the fluid dynamic limit of the Boltzmann equation, we first make the Hilbert expansion for the solution of the Doi-Onsager equation. The existence of the Hilbert expansion is connected to an open question whether the energy of the Ericksen-Leslie equation is dissipated. We show that the energy is dissipated for the Ericksen-Leslie equation derived from the Doi-Onsager equation. The most difficult step is to prove a uniform bound for the remainder in the Hilbert expansion. This questio…
For any bounded, smooth domain $Ω\subset \R^2$, %(or $Ω=\R^2$), we will establish the weak compactness property of solutions to the simplified Ericksen-Leslie system for both uniaxial and biaxial nematics, and the convergence of weak solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau type nematic liquid crystal flow to a weak solution of the simplified Ericksen-Leslie system as the parameter tends to zero. This is based on the compensated compactness property of the Ericksen stress tensors, which is obtained by the $L^p$-estimate of the Hopf differential for the Ericksen-Leslie system and the Pohozaev type argu…
We establish the following well-posedness results on Ericksen-Leslie's parabolic-hyperbolic liquid crystal model: 1, if the dissipation coefficients β= μ_4 - 4 μ_6 > 0, and the size of the initial energy E^{in} is small enough, then the life span of the solution is at least -O(\ln E^{in}); 2, for the special case that the coefficients μ_1 = μ_2 = μ_3 = μ_5 = μ_6 = 0, for which the model is the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the wave map from \mathbb{R}^n to \mathbb{S}^2, the same existence result holds but without the smallness restriction on the size of the initial data; 3, with further…
We prove that the smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for the compressible general three-dimensional Ericksen--Leslie system modeling nematic liquid crystal flow with conserved mass, linear momentum, and dissipating total energy, generally lose classical smoothness within a finite time.
In the first part of this paper, we establish global existence of solutions of the liquid crystal (gradient) flow for the well-known Oseen-Frank model. The liquid crystal flow is a prototype of equations from the Ericksen-Leslie system in the hydrodynamic theory and generalizes the heat flow for harmonic maps into the 2-sphere. The Ericksen-Leslie system is a system of the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the liquid crystal flow. In the second part of this paper, we also prove global existence of solutions of the Ericksen-Leslie system for a general Oseen-Frank model in $\Bbb R^2$.
We investigate existence and uniqueness for the stochastic liquid crystal flow driven by colored noise on the two-dimensional torus. After giving a natural uniqueness criterion, we prove local solvability in $L^p$-based spaces, for every $p>2.$ Thanks to a bootstrap principle together with a Gyöngy-Krylov-type compactness argument, this will ultimately lead us to prove the existence of a particular class of global solutions which are partially regular, strong in the probabilistic sense, and taking values in the "critical space" $L^2\times H^1.$
In this paper, we establish the local well-posedness and blow-up criteria of strong solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie system in $\Bbb R^3$ for the well-known Oseen-Frank model. The local existence of strong solutions to liquid crystal flows is obtained by using the Ginzburg-Landau approximation approach to guarantee the constraint that the direction vector of the fluid is of length one. We establish four kinds of blow-up criteria, including (i) the Serrin type; (ii) the Beal-Kato-Majda type; (iii) the mixed type, i.e., Serrin type condition for one field and Beal-Kato-Majda type condition on th…
