In this paper, we apply the angle-resolved Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance (ODMR) technique to study series of strained (Cd, Mn)Te/(Cd, Mg)Te quantum wells (QWs) produced by molecular beam epitaxy. By analyzing characteristic features of ODMR angular scans, we determine strain-induced axial-symmetry spin Hamiltonian parameter D with neV precision. Furthermore, we use low-temperature optical reflectivity measurements and X-ray diffraction scans to evaluate the local strain present in QW material. In our analysis, we take into account different thermal expansion coefficients of GaAs substrate and CdTe buffer. The additional deformation due to the thermal expansion effects has the same magnitude as deformation origination from the different compositions of the samples. Based on the evaluated deformations and values of strain-induced axial-symmetry spin Hamiltonian parameter D, we find strain spin-lattice coefficient G11 = (72.2 +- 1.9) neV for Mn2+ in CdTe and shear deformation potential b = (-0.94 +- 0.11) eV for CdTe.
We calculated a spin-polarized conductance in the almost unexplored nanostructure "high temperature ferromagnetic insulator/ graphene/ ferroelectric film" with a special attention to the impact of electric polarization rotation in a strained multiaxial ferroelectric film. The rotation and value of polarization vector are controlled by a misfit strain. We proposed a phenomenological model, which takes into account the shift of the Dirac point due to the proximity of ferromagnetic insulator and uses the Landauer formula for the conductivity of the graphene channel. We derived analytical expressi…
Effective conduction-band model for zincblende III-V semiconductors in the presence of strain: tuning the properties of bulk crystals and nanostructures
2D MoS2 attracts increasing attention for its application in flexible electronics and photonic devices. For 2D material optoelectronic devices, light absorption of the molecularly thin 2D absorber would be one of the key limiting factors in device efficiency, and conventional photon management techniques are not necessarily compatible with them. In this paper, we show two semimetal composite nanostructures for synergistic photon management and strain-induced band gap engineering of 2D MoS2: (1) pseudo-periodic Sn nanodots, (2) conductive SnOx (x<1) core-shell nanoneedle structures. Without sop…
The observation of quantum light emission from atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides has opened a new field of applications for these material systems. The corresponding excited charge-carrier localization has been linked to defects and strain, while open questions remain regarding the microscopic origin. We demonstrate that the bending rigidity of these materials leads to wrinkling of the two-dimensional layer. The resulting strain field facilitates strong carrier localization due to its pronounced influence on the band gap. Additionally, we consider charge carrier confinement due …
Strain engineering is a powerful technology which exploits stationary external or internal stress of specific spatial distribution for controlling the fundamental properties of condensed materials and nanostructures. This advanced technique modulates in space the carrier density and mobility, the optical absorption and, in strongly correlated systems, the phase, e.g. insulator/metal or ferromagnetic/paramagnetic. However, while successfully accessing nanometer length scale, strain engineering is yet to be brought down to ultrafast time scales allowing strain-assisted control of state of matter…
The absence of stray fields, their insensitivity to external magnetic fields, and ultrafast dynamics make antiferromagnets promising candidates for active elements in spintronic devices. Here, we demonstrate manipulation of the Néel vector in the metallic collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_2$Au by combining strain and femtosecond laser excitation. Applying tensile strain along either of the two in-plane easy axes and locally exciting the sample by a train of femtosecond pulses, we align the Néel vector along the direction controlled by the applied strain. The dependence on the laser fluence and str…
Above-bandgap optical illumination induces a transformation from tilted tetragonal-like (T-like) and rhombohedral-like (R-like) phases to an untilted T-like phase in compressively strained BiFeO3. Optical excitation leads to an out-of-plane lattice expansion in the T-like phase. The transformation proceeds in regions with boundaries between the T-like and tilted R-like and tilted T-like phases, consistent with the motion of a boundary. The optically induced transformation indicates that there are new optically driven routes towards nanosecond-scale control of phase transformations in ferroelec…
Rigorous electrodynamical simulations based on the nonlinear Drude model are performed to investigate the influence of strong coupling on high harmonic generation by periodic metal gratings. It is shown that a thin dispersive material with a third order nonlinearity strongly coupled to surface plasmon-polaritons significantly affects even harmonics generated solely by the metal. The physical nature of this effect is explained using a simple analytical model and further supported by numerical simulations. Furthermore, the behavior of the second and third harmonics is investigated as a function …
Metasurfaces are ultrathin nanostructured surfaces that can allow arbitrary manipulation of light. Implementing dynamic tunability into their design could allow the optical functions of metasurfaces to be rapidly modified at will. The most pronounced and robust tunability of optical properties is provided by phase-change materials such as vanadium dioxide (VO2) and germanium antimony telluride (GST), but their implementations have been limited only to near-infrared wavelengths. Here, we demonstrate that VO2 nanoantennas with widely tunable Mie resonances can be utilized for designing tunable m…
The electron and hole g factors are the key quantities for the spin manipulations in semiconductor quantum nanostructures. However, for the individual nanostructures, the separate determination including the signs of those g factors is difficult by using some methods adopted conventionally in bulks and quantum wells. We report a convenient optical method for the sign identification of out-of-plane g factors in the individual quantum nanostructures, which utilizes the optically-induced nuclear spin switch. The method is demonstrated in typical single self-assembled In$_{0.75}$Al$_{0.25}$As/Al$_…
Control of local lattice perturbations near optically-active defects in semiconductors is a key step to harnessing the potential of solid-state qubits for quantum information science and nanoscale sensing. We report the development of a stroboscopic scanning X-ray diffraction microscopy approach for real-space imaging of dynamic strain used in correlation with microscopic photoluminescence measurements. We demonstrate this technique in 4H-SiC, which hosts long-lifetime room temperature vacancy spin defects. Using nano-focused X-ray photon pulses synchronized to a surface acoustic wave launcher…
We report spin and intensity coupling of an exciton-polariton condensate to the mechanical vibrations of a circular membrane microcavity. We optically drive the microcavity resonator at the lowest mechanical resonance frequency while creating an optically-trapped spin-polarized polariton condensate in different locations on the microcavity, and observe spin and intensity oscillations of the condensate at the vibration frequency of the resonator. Spin oscillations are induced by vibrational strain driving, whilst the modulation of the optical trap due to the displacement of the membrane causes …
Graphene is a unique material to study fundamental limits of plasmonics. Apart from the ultimate single-layer thickness, its carrier concentration can be tuned by chemical doping or applying an electric field. In this manner the electrodynamic properties of graphene can be varied from highly conductive to dielectric. Graphene supports strongly confined, propagating surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) in a broad spectral range from terahertz to mid-infrared frequencies. It also possesses a strong magneto-optical response and thus provides complimentary architectures to conventional magneto-plasmo…
In many physical systems, there are specific electronic states called dark state that are protected from the rapid radiative decay imposed by the system symmetry. Although their long-lived nature indicates their potential for quantum information and spintronic applications, their high stability comes at the expense of optical accessibility. Breaking the symmetry by using magnetic and electric fields has been employed to hybridize dark and bright states thus making them optically active, but high-frequency and on-chip operation remains to be developed. Here we demonstrate the strain-induced coh…
Accurate modeling of electronic properties of nanostructures is a challenging theoretical problem. Methods making use of continuous media approximation, such as k.p, sometimes struggle to reproduce results obtained with more accurate atomistic approaches. On the contrary, atomistic schemes generally come with a substantially larger cost of computation. Here, we bridge between these two approaches by taking 8-band k.p method augmented with non-linear strain terms fit to reproduce sp3d5s* tight-binding results. We illustrate this method on the example of electron and hole states confined in quan…
Strong spatial confinement and highly reduced dielectric screening provide monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with strong many-body effects, thereby possessing optically forbidden excitonic states (i.e., dark excitons) at room temperature. Herein, we explore the interaction of surface plasmons with dark excitons in hybrid systems consisting of stacked gold nanotriangles (AuNTs) and monolayer WS2. We observe a narrow Fano resonance when the hybrid system is surrounded by water, and we attribute the narrowing of the spectral Fano linewidth to the plasmon-enhanced decay of dark K-…
We report measurements of optically detected magnetic resonance spectra of ensembles of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamonds in the presence of strain and DC external electric fields. The Stark shift of the spectral lines is stronger when the axial magnetic field along the NV centers quantization axis is minimized. The shift is also enhanced at avoided crossings between the hyperfine levels at an axial field of 77 uT. Since the intrinsic strain in the diamond also induces a Stark shift, we are able to calculate the magnitude and direction of the strain within the crysta…
We experimentally study the coupling of Group V donor spins in silicon to mechanical strain, and measure strain-induced frequency shifts which are linear in strain, in contrast to the quadratic dependence predicted by the valley repopulation model (VRM), and therefore orders of magnitude greater than that predicted by the VRM for small strains $|\varepsilon| < 10^{-5}$. Through both tight-binding and first principles calculations we find that these shifts arise from a linear tuning of the donor hyperfine interaction term by the hydrostatic component of strain and achieve semi-quantitative agre…
