We investigate interactions between branes of various dimensions, both charged and uncharged, in three non-supersymmetric string models. These include the $USp(32)$ and $U(32)$ orientifold projections of the type IIB and type $0$B strings, as well as the $SO(16) \times SO(16)$ projection of the exceptional heterotic string. The resulting ten-dimensional spectra are free of tachyons, and the combinations of branes that they contain give rise to rich and varied dynamics. We compute static potentials for parallel stacks of branes in three complementary regimes: the probe regime, in which one of the two stacks is parametrically heavier than the other, the string-amplitude regime, in which both stacks are light, and the holographic regime. Whenever comparisons are possible, we find qualitative agreement despite the absence of supersymmetry. For charged branes, our analysis reveals that the Weak Gravity Conjecture is satisfied in a novel way via a renormalization of the effective charge-to-tension ratio.
We point out that the de Sitter swampland conjecture would be falsified if classical fluxed Type IIA orientifold vacua with a single non-BPS D7-brane were indeed part of the string theory landscape. In other words, the dS swampland conjecture implies the cancellation of K-theory charges on a compact space.
Over the past few decades, inflation models have been studied by researchers from different perspectives and conditions in order to introduce a model for the expanding universe. In this paper, we introduce a modified $f(R)$ gravitational model as ($R+γR^{p}$) in order to examine a new condition for inflation models. Given that our studies are related to a modified $f(R)$ gravitational model on the brane, therefore we will encounter modified cosmological parameters. So, we first introduce these modified cosmological parameters such as spectral index, a number of e-folds and etc. Then, we apply …
We review some aspects of the dramatic consequences of supersymmetry breaking on string vacua. In particular, we focus on the issue of vacuum stability in ten-dimensional string models with broken, or without, supersymmetry, whose perturbative spectra are free of tachyons. After formulating the models at stake, we introduce their unified low-energy effective description and present a number of vacuum solutions to the classical equations of motion. In addition, we present a generalization of previous no-go results for de Sitter vacua in warped flux compactifications. Then we analyze the classic…
The Swampland program relies heavily on the conjecture that there can only be a finite number of flux vacua (FFV conjecture). Stipulating this FFV conjecture and applying it to some older work in flux vacua construction we show that within a patch of the landscape the FFV conjecture makes predictions on the non-existence of otherwise viable non-perturbative objects arising from brane recombination. Future gains in direct non-perturbative analysis could therefore not only test this prediction but also test portions of the Swampland program itself. We also discuss implications of a weaker FFV co…
The swampland conjectures from string theory have had some really interesting implications on cosmology, in particular on inflationary models. Some models of inflation have been shown to be incompatible with these criterion while some have been shown to be severely fine tuned, with most of these problems arising in single field inflationary models in a General relativistic cosmology. Recent works have although optimistically shown that single field models in more general cosmologies can be consistent with these conjectures and hence there is an optimism that not all such models lie in the swam…
In this paper, we show that single-field chaotic inflation on the brane with the potential $V=a ϕ^p$ is compatible with the Swampland criteria. The spectral index and the running spectral index are within experimental bounds for $0<p \leq 2$. The tensor to scalar ratio is within observational bounds if $p \lesssim \mathcal{O}(1)$.
We study cosmological inflation and its dynamics in the framework of the Randall-Sundrum II brane model. In particular, we analyze in detail four representative small-field inflationary potentials, namely Natural inflation, Hilltop inflation, Higgs-like inflation, and Exponential SUSY inflation, each characterized by two mass scales. We constrain the parameters for which a viable inflationary Universe emerges using the latest PLANCK results. Furthermore, we investigate whether or not those models in brane cosmology are consistent with the recently proposed Swampland Criteria, and give predicti…
Recently, Kim, Shiu and Vafa proposed general consistency conditions for six dimensional supergravity theories with minimal supersymmetry coming from couplings to strings. We test them in explicit perturbative orientifold models in order to unravel the microscopic origin of these constraints. Based on the perturbative data, we conjecture the existence of null charges $Q \cdot Q=0 $ for any six-dimensional theory with at least one tensor multiplet, coupling to string defects of charge $Q$. We then include the new constraint to exclude some six-dimensional supersymmetric anomaly-free examples th…
For certain terms in the action, supersymmetry can forbid an infinite number of possible contributions. We study whether such protection can occur in quantum gravity even without sufficient supersymmetry. We focus on whether the superpotential can vanish exactly in four-dimensional N=1 theories, and if the prepotential can be exactly cubic in N=2 theories. We investigate these questions in string theory and find that for almost all known string constructions the corrections allowed by supersymmetry do occur. However, we do find some special settings where all the corrections can be proven to v…
It has very recently been realized that coupling branes to higher dimensional quantum gravity theories and considering the consistency of what lives on the branes, one is able to understand whether such theories can belong either to the swampland or to the landscape. In this regard, in the present work, we study a warm inflation model embedded in the Randall-Sundrum braneworld scenario. It is explicitly shown that this model belongs to the landscape by supporting a strong dissipative regime with an inflaton steep exponential potential. The presence of extra dimension effects from the braneworl…
We point out that pure supergravity theories in $AdS$ with enough supersymmetry lead, upon taking the large radius limit, to flat space quantum gravities with a nonperturbatively exact global symmetry, and are therefore in the Swampland. The argument applies to any $AdS$ supergravity with gauged R-symmetry group, including truncations of most well known examples, such as $AdS_5$ without the $S^5$ or $AdS_4$ without the $S^7$. This demonstrates that extreme scale separation, at least with enough supersymmetry, is not realizable. Moreover pure $AdS$ theories are also in conflict with some other …
Completeness of the spectrum of charged branes in a quantum theory of gravity naturally motivates the question of whether consistency of what lives on the branes can be used to explain some of the Swampland conditions. In this paper we focus on consistency of what lives on string probes, to show some of the theories with ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetry in 10d and 6d, which are otherwise consistent looking, belong to the Swampland. Gravitational and gauge group anomaly inflow on these probes can be used to compute the gravitational central charges $(c_L,c_R)$ as well as the level of the group's …
In this note we consider whether there could be Swampland constraints associated to the presence of fermions in the theory. We propose that any fermion must couple to an infinite tower of states, and that the mass scale of this tower, in Planck units, is set by the strength of the Yukawa coupling to the tower. This is a type of fermionic version of the (magnetic) Weak Gravity Conjecture. We also find that supersymmetry plays a natural part in this fermionic realisation, which motivates a further proposal that supersymmetry can only be broken below the scale set by this Yukawa coupling. We perf…
We sharpen Swampland constraints on 8d supergravity theories by studying consistency conditions on worldvolume theory of 3-brane probes. Combined with a stronger form of the cobordism conjecture, this leads to the reconstruction of the compact internal geometry and implies strong restrictions on the gauge algebra and on some higher derivative terms (related to the level of the current algebra on the 1-brane). In particular we argue that 8d supergravity theories with $\mathfrak{g}_2$ gauge symmetry are in the Swampland. These results provide further evidence for the string lamppost principle in…
We discuss infinite families of non-supersymmetric AdS$_6$ solutions in Type IIB string theory. They are siblings of supersymmetric solutions which are associated with $(p,q)$ 5-brane webs and holographically dual to 5d SCFTs engineered by those brane webs. The non-supersymmetric backgrounds carry identical 5-brane charges and are connected to the supersymmetric ones by RG flows. We study the stability of the non-supersymmetric solutions, identifying perturbative and non-perturbative decay channels for all the backgrounds explicitly available. We also identify likely decay mechanisms for solut…
The Swampland Distance Conjecture states that at infinite distance in the scalar moduli space an infinite tower of particles become exponentially massless. We study this issue in the context of 4d type IIA and type IIB Calabi-Yau compactifications. We find that for large moduli not only towers of particles but also domain walls and strings become tensionless. We study in detail the case of type IIA and IIB ${\cal N}=1$ CY orientifolds and show how for infinite Kähler and/or complex structure moduli towers of domain walls and strings become tensionless, depending on the particular direction in …
We propose a new swampland conjecture stating that the limit of vanishing gravitino mass corresponds to the massless limit of an infinite tower of states and to the consequent breakdown of the effective field theory. We test our proposal in large classes of models coming from compactification of string theory to four dimensions, where we identify the Kaluza-Klein nature of the tower of states becoming light. We point out a general relation between the gravitino mass and abelian gauge coupling in models with extended supersymmetry, which can survive also in examples with minimal supersymmetry. …
We study the cobordism conjecture of McNamara and Vafa which asserts that the bordism group of quantum gravity is trivial. In the context of type IIB string theory compactified on a circle, this predicts the presence of D7-branes. On the other hand, the non-Abelian structure of the IIB duality group $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ implies the existence of additional $[p,q]$ 7-branes. We find that this additional information is instead captured by the space of closed paths on the moduli space of elliptic curves parameterizing distinct values of the type IIB axio-dilaton. This description allows to recover t…
We generalize the swampland criterion forbidding stable non-supersymmetric AdS vacua and propose a new swampland conjecture forbidding stable non-supersymmetric "locally AdS" warped throats. The conjecture is motivated by the properties of systems of fractional D3-branes at singularities, and can be used to rule out large classes of warped throats with supersymmetry breaking ingredients, and their possible application to de Sitter uplift. In particular, this allows to reinterpret the runaway instabilities of the gravity dual of fractional branes in the dP$_1$ theory, and to rule out warped thr…
Recently it has been conjectured that string theory does not allow for dS vacua or dS extrema. To scrutinize such a conjecture, it is important to study concrete string theory compactifications and spell out their assumptions and potential shortcomings. We do so for one particular class of string compactifications, namely classical compactifications of type II string theory with fluxes, D-branes and O-planes on manifolds with SU(3) structure. In particular, we revisit previously found dS critical points, construct many new ones and check whether they invalidate the dS swampland conjecture.
A low-energy effective theory is said to be in the swampland if it does not have any consistent UV completion inside a theory of quantum gravity. The natural question is if the standard model of particle physics, possibly with some minimal extensions, are in the swampland or not. We discuss this question in view of the recent swampland conjectures. We prove a no-go theorem concerning the modification of the Higgs sector. Moreover, we find that QCD axion is incompatible with the recent swampland conjectures, unless some sophisticated possibilities are considered. We discuss the implications of …
The swampland is the set of seemingly consistent low-energy effective field theories that cannot be consistently coupled to quantum gravity. In this review we cover some of the conjectural properties that effective theories should possess in order not to fall in the swampland, and we give an overview of their main applications to particle physics. The latter include predictions on neutrino masses, bounds on the cosmological constant, the electroweak and QCD scales, the photon mass, the Higgs potential and some insights about supersymmetry.
In this paper, I show that type I hilltop inflation under the current observational constaints could have $M_P^2 \frac{V^{\prime\prime}}{V} \sim -\mathcal{O}(10^{-2})$ in the parameter space which is in tension with the refined swampland criteria. On the other hand, $M_P^2 \frac{V^{\prime\prime}}{V} \sim -\mathcal{O}(1)$ can be achieved if type I hilltop inflation on the brane is considered.
We study the supersymmetry projection rules on exotic branes in type II string theories and M-theory. They justify the validity of the exotic duality between standard branes and exotic branes of codimension two. By virtue of the supersymmetry projection rules on various branes, we can consider a system that involves multiple non-parallel exotic branes in the nongeometric background.
We study de Sitter configurations in ten-dimensional string models where supersymmetry is either absent or broken at the string scale. To this end, we derive expressions for the cosmological constant in general warped flux compactifications with localized sources, which yield no-go theorems that extend previous works on supersymmetric cases. We frame our results within a dimensional reduction and connect them to a number of Swampland conjectures, corroborating them further in the absence of supersymmetry. Furthermore, we construct a top-down string embedding of de Sitter brane-world cosmologie…
We study the existence and stability of classical de Sitter solutions of type II supergravities with parallel Dp-branes and orientifold Op-planes. Together with the dilaton and volume scalar fields, we consider a third one that distinguishes between parallel and transverse directions to the Dp/Op. We derive the complete scalar potential for these three fields. This formalism allows us to reproduce known constraints obtained in 10d, and to derive new ones. Specifying to group manifolds with constant fluxes, we exclude a large region of parameter space, forbidding de Sitter solutions on nilmanif…
In this thesis we investigate some aspects of the dramatic consequences of supersymmetry breaking on string vacua. In particular, we focus on the issue of vacuum stability in ten-dimensional string models with broken, or without, supersymmetry, whose perturbative spectra are free of tachyons. After formulating the models at stake in Chapter 2, we introduce their low-energy effective description in Chapter 3, presenting a number of vacuum solutions to the classical equations of motion. In Chapter 4 we analyze their classical stability, studying linearized field fluctuations, and in Chapter 5 we…
We consider a recent proposal to solve the cosmological constant problem within the context of brane world scenarios with infinite volume extra dimensions. In such theories bulk can be supersymmetric even if brane supersymmetry is completely broken. We propose a setup where unbroken bulk supersymmetry appears to protect the brane cosmological constant. This is due to a non-trivial scalar potential in the bulk which implies a non-trivial profile for a bulk scalar field. In the presence of the latter bulk supersymmetry appears to be incompatible with non-vanishing brane cosmological constant. Mo…
The supersymmetry arises in certain theories of fermions coupled to gauge fields and gravity in a spacetime of 11 dimensions. The dynamical brane background has mainly been studied for the class of purely bosonic solutions only, but recent developments involving a time-dependent brane solution have made it clear that one can get more information by asking what happens on supersymmetric systems. In this paper, we construct an exact supersymmetric solution of a dynamical M-brane background in the 11-dimensional supergravity and investigate supersymmetry breaking, the geometric features near the …
We determine the possible fractions of supersymmetry preserved by two intersecting M-5-branes. These include the fractions 3/32 and 5/32 which have not occurred previously in intersecting brane configurations. Both occur in non-orthogonal pointlike intersections of M-5-branes but 5/32 supersymmetry is possible only for specific fixed angles.
We examine the supersymmetry of classical D-brane and M-brane configurations and explain the dependence of Killing spinors on coordinates. We find that one half supersymmetry is broken in the bulk and that supersymmetry near the D-brane horizon is restored for $p\leq 3$, for solutions in the stringy frame, but only for $p=3$ in the10d canonical frame. We study the enhancement for the case of four intersecting D-3-branes in 10 dimensions and the implication of this for the size of the infinite throat of the near horizon geometry in non-compactified theory. We found some indications of universal…
We construct type I string models with supersymmetry broken by compactification that are non-tachyonic and have exponentially small effective potential at one-loop. All open string moduli can be stabilized, while the closed string moduli remain massless at one-loop. The backgrounds of interest have rigid Wilson lines by the use of stacked branes, and some models should have heterotic duals. We also present non-tachyonic backgrounds with positive potentials of runaway type at one-loop. This class of models could be used to test various swampland conjectures.
We study brane embeddings in M-theory plane-waves and their supersymmetry. The relation with branes in AdS backgrounds via the Penrose limit is also explored. Longitudinal planar branes are originated from AdS branes while giant gravitons of AdS spaces become spherical branes which are realized as fuzzy spheres in the massive matrix theory.
We consider cosmological solutions in 5d locally supersymmetric theories including boundary actions, with either opposite tension branes for identical brane chiralities or equal tension branes for flipped brane chiralities. We analyse the occurrence of supersymmetry breakdown in both situations. We find that supersymmetry as seen by a brane observer is broken due to the motion of the brane in the bulk. When the brane energy-momentum tensor is dominated by the brane tension, the 4d vacuum energy cosmological constant on the observable brane is positive and proportional to the inverse square of …
A new class of six-dimensional asymmetric orientifolds is considered where the orientifold operation is combined with T-duality. The models are supersymmetric in the bulk, but the cancellation of the tadpoles requires the introduction of brane configurations that break supersymmetry. These can be described by D7-brane anti-brane pairs, non-BPS D8-branes or D9-brane anti-brane pairs. The transition between these different configurations and their stability is analysed in detail.
We compute how bulk loops renormalize both bulk and brane effective interactions for codimension-two branes in 6D gauged chiral supergravity, as functions of the brane tension and brane-localized flux. We do so by explicitly integrating out hyper- and gauge-multiplets in 6D gauged chiral supergravity compactified to 4D on a flux-stabilized 2D rugby-ball geometry, specializing the results of a companion paper, arXiv:1210.3753, to the supersymmetric case. While the brane back-reaction generically breaks supersymmetry, we show that the bulk supersymmetry can be preserved if the amount of brane-lo…
We construct a model with D5 branes wrapped on a deformed and resolved $A_6$ singularity which realizes metastable supersymmetry breaking and minimal gauge mediation. Supersymmetry is broken at tree level by the F--term of singlet which also obtains a VEV as required in gauge mediation. Three nodes of the singularity are used to break supersymmetry whereas the other three realize gauge mediation. The supersymmetry breaking scale is suppressed due to brane instanton effects which are computed using a geometric transition.
We consider intersecting M-brane solutions of supergravity in eleven dimensions. Supersymmetry turns out to be a powerful tool in obtaining such solutions and their generalizations.
We consider the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry in five dimensional supergravity with boundaries where the supersymmetry breaking mechanism is provided by the even part of the bulk prepotential. The supersymmetric action comprises boundary brane terms with detuned tensions. The two branes have opposite tensions. We analyse the possible vacua with spontaneously broken supersymmetry. A class of solutions corresponds to rotated branes in an $AdS_5$ bulk. In particular parallel branes which are rotated with respect to the bulk preserve 1/4 of supersymmetry. We analyse more general vacua usin…
In the context of colliding brane worlds I discuss a toy cosmological model, developed in collaboration with E. Gravanis, which arguably produces inflation and a relaxing to zero cosmological ``constant'' hierarchically small as compared to the supersymmetry breaking (TeV) scale. Supersymmetry breaking is induced by compactification of the brane worlds on magnetized tori. The crucial ingredient is the non-criticality (non conformality) of string theory on the observable brane world induced at the collision, which is thus viewed as a cause for departure from equilibrium in this system. The hier…
We study the coupling of supergravity with a purely bosonic brane source (bosonic p-brane). The interaction, described by the sum of their respective actions, is self-consistent if the bosonic p-brane is the pure bosonic limit of a super-p-brane. In that case the dynamical system preserves 1/2 of the local supersymmetry characteristic of the `free' supergravity.
We construct the supergravity solution in 11 dimensions describing D6-branes wrapped around a Kahler four-cycle with a B-field along the flat directions of the brane. The configuration is dual to an N=2 noncommutative gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions. We also construct the four associated independent Killing spinors. The phenomenon of supersymmetry without supersymmetry appears naturally when compactifying to type IIA or 8d gauged supergravity. Therefore, this solution also provides an 11d background with four supercharges and four-form flux, which is not obtainable from 8d gauged supergravity.
We consider supergravity theories with 16 supercharges in Minkowski space with dimensions $d>3$. We argue that there is an upper bound on the number of massless modes in such theories depending on $d$. In particular we show that the rank of the gauge symmetry group $G$ in $d$ dimensions is bounded by $r_G\leq 26-d$. This in particular demonstrates that 4 dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theories with rank bigger than 22, despite being consistent and indeed finite before coupling to gravity, cannot be consistently coupled to ${\cal N}=4$ supergravity in Minkowski space and belong to the swampland. …
We identify configurations of intersecting branes that correspond to the meta-stable supersymmetry breaking vacua in the four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory coupled to massive flavors. We show how their energies, the stability properties, and the decay processes are described geometrically in terms of the brane configurations.
We construct Abelian brane models with metastable vacua which are obtained from deformations of ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric brane configurations. One such model lives on a D4 brane stretched between two displaced and rotated NS5 branes. Another one lives on a D5 brane wrapped on a deformed and fibered $A_2$ singularity.
We consider the 3+1 visible sector to live on a Hanany-Witten D-brane construction in type IIA string theory. The messenger sector consists of stretched strings from the visible brane to a hidden D6-brane in the extra spatial dimensions. In the open string channel supersymmetry is broken by gauge mediation while in the closed string channel supersymmetry is broken by gravity mediation. Hence, we call this kind of mediation ``string mediation''. We propose an extension of the Dimopoulos-Georgi theorem to brane models: only detached probe branes can break supersymmetry without generating a tachy…
We elucidate some properties of the relation between two T-dual systems in tori, branes at angles and branes wrapping the whole torus carrying fluxes. We analyze different features of these systems: charges, low energy spectrum, tadpole cancellation, symmetry groups, ... and the correspondence between the two viewpoints. Particular attention is paid to supersymmetry and stability conditions. While on the branes at angles side stability and supersymmetry can be expressed as conditions on the angles between the two branes at the intersection, on the dual side supersymmetry has to do with a corre…
We discuss the recent proposal that BPS D-branes in Calabi-Yau compactification of type II string theory are Pi-stable objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves.
Classical and quantum symmetries of super $p$-branes preserving exotic 3/4 fraction of $N=1 D=4$ global supersymmetry are studied. Classical realization of the algebra of global and world-volume symmetries is constructed and its quantum generalizations are analyzed. Established is that the status of the conformal supersymmetry $OSp(1|8)$ as a proper quantum symmetry of brane depends both on the choice of its vacuum state and the associated ordering of $\hat{\cal Q}$ and $\hat{\cal P}$ operators.
Quantum consistency suggests that any de Sitter patch that lasts a number of Hubble times that exceeds its Gibbons-Hawking entropy divided by the number of light particle species suffers an effect of quantum breaking. Inclusion of other interactions makes the quantum break-time shorter. The requirement that this must not happen puts severe constraints on scalar potentials, essentially suppressing the self-reproduction regimes. In particular, it eliminates both local and global minima with positive energy densities and imposes a general upper bound on the number of e-foldings in any given Hubbl…
We conjecture and present evidence that any effective field theory coupled to gravity in flat space admits at most a finite number of fine tunings, depending on the amount of supersymmetry and spacetime dimension. In particular, this means that there are infinitely many non-trivial correlations between the allowed deformations of a given effective field theory in the gravitational context. Fine tuning of parameters allows us to obtain some consistent CFTs in the IR limit of gravitational theories. Related to finiteness of fine tunings, we conjecture that except for a finite number of CFTs, the…
We discuss a model in which our universe is pictured as a recoiling Dirichlet brane: we find that a proper treatment of the recoil leads naturally to supersymmetry obstruction on the four-dimensional world. An essential feature of our approach is the fact that the underlying worldsheet sigma model is non-critical, and the Liouville mode plays the role of the target time. Also, the extra bulk dimensions are viewed as sigma model couplings, and as such have to be averaged by appropriate summation over worldsheet genera. The recoiling brane is in an excited state rather than its ground state, to …
We study the weak gravity conjecture in non-supersymmetric string theory setups. Precisely, those are type I string theory with supersymmetry broken à la Scherk-Schwarz and open strings on D branes wrapped around magnetized tori in type II string theory. We compute long-range interactions between identical branes at one-loop and compare them to the weak gravity conjecture for higher-degree forms. In our examples, SUSY breaking generates interactions between branes, which are not anymore BPS, in such a way that the weak gravity conjecture is verified. In type I with the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism…
In this paper we extend the boundary string field theory action for a non-BPS D-brane to the one including the target space fermions and the nonlinear supersymmetry with 32 supercharges up to some order. This is based on the idea that the vacuum with a non-BPS D-brane belongs to the spontaneously broken phase of the supersymmetry. As a result, we find that the action is almost uniquely determined up to the field redefinition ambiguities.
Metastable supersymmetry breaking configurations of D-branes and NS5-branes in string theory often owe their existence to classical gravitational interactions between the branes. We show that in the effective theory of the light fields, these interactions give rise to a non-canonical Kähler potential and other D-terms. String theory provides a UV completion in which these non-renormalizable terms can be computed. We use these observations to clarify the relation between the phase structure of ISS-type models and their brane realizations.
