This paper initiates a series of works dedicated to the rigorous study of the precise structure of gravitational radiation near infinity. We begin with a brief review of an argument due to Christodoulou [1] stating that Penrose's proposal of smooth conformal compactification of spacetime (or smooth null infinity) fails to accurately capture the structure of gravitational radiation emitted by $N$ infalling masses coming from past timelike infinity $i^-$. Modelling gravitational radiation by scalar radiation, we then take a first step towards a rigorous, fully general relativistic understanding of the non-smoothness of null infinity by constructing solutions to the spherically symmetric Einstein-Scalar field equations. Our constructions are motivated by Christodoulou's argument: They arise dynamically from polynomially decaying boundary data, $rϕ\sim t^{-1}$ as $t\to-\infty$, on a timelike hypersurface (to be thought of as the surface of a star) and the no incoming radiation condition, $r\partial_vϕ=0$, on past null infinity $\mathcal{I}^-$. We show that if the initial Hawking mass at $i^-$ is non-zero, then, in accordance with the non-smoothness of $\mathcal I^+$, $\partial_v(rϕ)$ satisfies the following asymptotic expansion near $\mathcal{I}^+$ for some constant $C\neq 0$: $\partial_v(rϕ)=Cr^{-3}\log r+\mathcal O(r^{-3})$. We also show that the same logarithmic terms appear in the linear theory, i.e. when considering the spherically symmetric linear wave equation on a fixed Schwarzschild background.
As a corollary, we can apply our results to the scattering problem on Schwarzschild: Putting smooth, compactly supported scattering data for the wave equation on $\mathcal I^-$ and on $\mathcal H^-$, we find that the asymptotic expansion of $\partial_v(rϕ)$ near $\mathcal I^+$ generically contains logarithmic terms at second order, i.e. at order $r^{-4}\log r$.
In this paper, we extend the results of Klainerman and Rodnianski in \cite{KR:Trapped}, which were obtained for a finite region, by showing similar results from past null infinity. This allows us to recover and extend the results from past null infinity in the work of Christodoulou \cite{Chr:book}.
We show that the BMS-supertranslations and their associated supermomenta on past null infinity can be related to those on future null infinity, proving the conjecture of Strominger for a class of spacetimes which are asymptotically-flat in the sense of Ashtekar and Hansen. Using a cylindrical 3-manifold of both null and spatial directions of approach towards spatial infinity, we impose appropriate regularity conditions on the Weyl tensor near spatial infinity along null directions. The asymptotic Einstein equations on this 3-manifold and the regularity conditions imply that the relevant Weyl t…
On any asymptotically-flat spacetime, we show that the asymptotic symmetries and charges of Maxwell fields on past null infinity can be related to those on future null infinity as recently proposed by Strominger. We extend the covariant formalism of Ashtekar and Hansen by constructing a 3-manifold of both null and spatial directions of approach to spatial infinity. This allows us to systematically impose appropriate regularity conditions on the Maxwell fields near spatial infinity along null directions. The Maxwell equations on this 3-manifold and the regularity conditions imply that the relev…
An idealized observer of an astronomical event is situated at future null infinity, where light rays emitted from the source approach. Mathematically, null infinity corresponds to the portion of the spacetime boundary defined by equivalence classes of null geodesics. But what can we observe at future null infinity? In the note, we start by reviewing the description of null infinity in terms of the Bondi-Sachs coordinate system. In particular, we reformulate and extend the invariance of Bondi mass and the mass loss formula in terms of a modified mass aspect 2-form. At the end, we discuss new re…
In the context of asymptotically flat spacetimes we exploit techniques proper either of white noise analysis either of dynamical systems in order to develop the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian approach to a BMS invariant field theory at null infinity.
We give a brief review of the definition of the Wang-Yau quasilocal mass and discuss the evaluation of which on surfaces of unit size at null infinity of an axi-symmetric spacetime in Bondi-van der Burg-Metzner coordinates.
We describe a novel twistorial construction of the asymptotic BMS symmetries at null infinity for asymptotically flat spacetimes. We define BMS twistors as spinor solutions to some set of components of the usual spacetime twistor equation restricted to null infinity. The space of BMS twistors is infinite-dimensional. We show that given two BMS twistors their symmetric tensor product can be used to generate (complex) vector fields which are the infinitesimal BMS symmetries of null infinity. In this sense BMS twistors are "square roots" of BMS symmetries. We also show that these BMS twistor equa…
There are two important statements regarding the Trautman-Bondi mass at null infinity: one is the positivity, and the other is the Bondi mass loss formula, which are both global in nature. In this note, we compute the limit of the Wang-Yau quasi-local mass on unit spheres at null infinity of an asymptotically flat spacetime in the Bondi-Sachs coordinates. The quasi-local mass leads to a local description of the radiation that is purely gravitational at null infinity. In particular, the quasi-local mass is evaluated in terms of the news function of the Bondi-Sachs coordinates.
It is known that, in an asymptotically flat spacetime, null infinity cannot act as an initial-value surface for massive real scalar fields. Exploiting tools proper of harmonic analysis on hyperboloids and global norm estimates for the wave operator, we show that it is possible to circumvent such obstruction at least in Minkowski spacetime. Hence we project norm-finite solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation of motion in data on null infinity and, eventually, we interpret them in terms of boundary free field theory.
In this work we give a complete picture of how to in a direct simple way define the mass at null infinity in harmonic coordinates in three different ways that we show satisfy the Bondi mass loss law. The first and second way involve only the limit of metric (Trautman mass) respectively the null second fundamental forms along asymptotically characteristic surfaces (asymptotic Hawking mass) that only depend on the ADM mass. The last in an original way involves construction of special characteristic coordinates at null infinity (Bondi mass). The results here rely on asymptotics of the metric deri…
We give new definitions of null infinity and black hole in terms of causal boundaries, applicable to any strongly causal spacetime $(M,g)$. These are meant to extend the standard ones given in terms of conformal boundaries, and use the new definitions to prove a classic result in black hole theory for this more general context: if the null infinity is regular (i.e. well behaved in a suitable sense) and $(M,g)$ obeys the null convergence condition, then any closed trapped surface in $(M,g)$ has to be inside the black hole region. As an illustration of this general construction, we apply it to t…
The common intrinsic geometry shared by all the null hypersurfaces gives rise to the asymptotic symmetries found on the null infinities $\mathscr I^\pm$ and the isolated horizons $Δ$. In this work, the properties of a null hypersurface are reviewed and the invariance of its intrinsic geometry ($n^an^bh_{ab}$) is revealed under the spacetime conformal transformation. The generators, i.e., infinitesimal symmetries, of the conformal transformation tangent to the null hypersurface are defined and classified by their effects on the induced metric and the normal vector field. Two particular examples…
We consider AdS gravity duals to CFT on background spacetimes with a null infinity. Null infinity on the conformal boundary may extend to an extremal horizon in the bulk. For example it does so for Poincare-AdS, although does not for planar Schwarzschild-AdS. If null infinity does extend into an extremal horizon in the bulk, we show that the bulk near-horizon geometry is determined by the geometry of the boundary null infinity. Hence the `infra-red' geometry of the bulk is fixed by the large scale behaviour of the CFT spacetime. In addition the boundary stress tensor must have a particular dec…
We define the angular momentum at null infinity in higher dimensions. The asymptotic symmetry at null infinity becomes the Poincare group in higher dimensions. This fact implies that the angular momentum can be defined without any ambiguities such as supertranslation in four dimensions. Indeed we can show that the angular momentum in our definition is transformed covariantly with respect to the Poincare group.
In general relativity, an idealized distant observer is situated at future null infinity where light rays emitted from the source approach. This article concerns conserved quantities such as mass, energy-momentum, angular momentum, and center of mass at future null infinity. The classical definitions of Bondi mass at future null infinity ascertains the mass radiated away in gravitational waves distinctively. However, the same question for other conserved quantities such as angular momentum has been a subtle issue since the discovery of "supertranslation ambiguity" in the 1960's. Recently, new …
It is shown that the conserved charges on the event horizon and the Cauchy horizon associated to scalar perturbations on extremal black holes are externally measurable from null infinity. This suggests that these charges have the potential to serve as an observational signature. The proof of this result is based on obtaining precise late-time asymptotics for the radiation field of outgoing perturbations.
We discuss the asymptotic structure of null infinity in five dimensional space-time. Since it is known that the conformal infinity is not useful for odd higher dimensions, we shall employ the coordinate based method like the Bondi coordinate firstly introduced in four dimensions. Then we define the null infinity and identify the asymptotic symmetry. We also derive the Bondi mass expression and show its conservation law.
We investigate the behavior of null geodesics near future null infinity in asymptotically flat spacetimes. In particular, we focus on the asymptotic behavior of null geodesics that correspond to worldlines of photons initially emitted in the directions tangential to the constant radial surfaces in the Bondi coordinates. The analysis is performed for general dimensions, and the difference between the four-dimensional cases and the higher-dimensional cases is stressed. In four dimensions, some assumptions are required to guarantee the null geodesics to reach future null infinity, in addition to …
I describe the Schwarzian behavior of the gravitational field at null infinity under superrotations, to be understood as an \textit{unobservable} gauge artifact. To this end I review the induced geometry of null infinity and the construction of the gauge-invariant News tensor that characterizes gravitational radiation. I discuss potentially important implications for the celestial holography program, suggesting in particular that the uplift of the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence directly relates to the unobservable gauge sector.
We study the limit of quasilocal energy defined in [7] and [8] for a family of spacelike 2-surfaces approaching null infinity of an asymptotically flat spacetime. It is shown that Lorentzian symmetry is recovered and an energy-momentum 4-vector is obtained. In particular, the result is consistent with the Bondi-Sachs energy-momentum at a retarded time. The quasilocal mass in [7] and [8] is defined by minimizing quasilocal energy among admissible isometric embeddings and observers. The solvability of the Euler-Lagrange equation for this variational problem is also discussed in both the asymptot…
When a system emits gravitational radiation, the Bondi mass decreases. If the Bondi energy is Hamiltonian, it can thus only be a time dependent Hamiltonian. In this paper, we show that the Bondi energy can be understood as a time-dependent Hamiltonian on the covariant phase space. Our derivation starts from the Hamiltonian formulation in domains with boundaries that are null. We introduce the most general boundary conditions on a generic such null boundary, and compute quasi-local charges for boosts, energy and angular momentum. Initially, these domains are at finite distance, such that there …
There has been a recent resurgence of interest in the structure of the gravitational field at null infinity, sparked by new results on soft charges and infrared issues related to the S matrix theory in perturbative quantum gravity. We summarize these developments and put them in the broader context of research in the relativity community that dates back to several decades. In keeping with intent of this series, this overview is addressed to gravitational scientists who are not experts in this specific area.
We consider a characteristic problem of the vacuum Einstein equations with part of the initial data given on a future complete null cone with suitable decay, and show that the solution exists uniformly around the null cone for general such initial data. We can then define a segment of the future null infinity. The initial data are not required to be small and the decaying condition inherits from the works of \cite{Ch-K} and \cite{K-N}.
We provide a mapping between past null and future null infinity in three-dimensional flat space, using symmetry considerations. From this we derive a mapping between the corresponding asymptotic symmetry groups. By studying the metric at asymptotic regions, we find that the mapping is energy preserving and yields an infinite number of conservation laws.
In this paper, using the Bondi coordinates, we discuss the angular momentum at null infinity in five dimensions and address the Poincare covariance of the Bondi mass and angular momentum. We also show the angular momentum loss/gain law due to gravitational waves. In four dimensions, the angular momentum at null infinity has the supertranslational ambiguity and then it is known that we cannot construct well-defined angular momentum there. On the other hand, we would stress that we can define angular momentum at null infinity without any ambiguity in higher dimensions. This is because of the non…
A new sufficient condition for photons emitted near future null infinity to reach future null infinity is derived by studying null geodesics in the Bondi coordinates in asymptotically flat spacetimes. In our previous works [arXiv:2106.03150, arXiv:2110.10917], such a condition was established for photons emitted in outward or tangential directions to constant radial surfaces. This paper improves our previous result by including photons emitted in inward directions. In four dimensions, imposing the same assumptions on the metric functions as previously, we prove that photons reach future null i…
We define the asymptotic flatness and discuss asymptotic symmetry at null infinity in arbitrary dimensions using the Bondi coordinates. To define the asymptotic flatness, we solve the Einstein equations and look at the asymptotic behavior of gravitational fields. Then we show the asymptotic symmetry and the Bondi mass loss law with the well-defined definition.
There are two important statements regarding the Trautman-Bondi mass [1,8,5] at null infinity: one is the positivity [7,6], and the other is the Bondi mass loss formula [1], which are both global in nature. The positivity of the quasi-local mass can potentially lead to a local description at null infinity. This is confirmed for the Vaidya spacetime in this note. We study the Wang-Yau quasi-local mass on surfaces of fixed size at the null infinity of the Vaidya spacetime. The optimal embedding equation is solved explicitly and the quasi-local mass is evaluated in terms of the mass aspect functi…
We show that we can combine the (complex, self-dual) BMS vector fields with the recently defined BMS twistors to obtain a new supersymmetric extension of the BMS symmetries at null infinity. We compare our construction to other supersymmetric extensions of the BMS algebra proposed in the context of supergravity. Unlike the standard constructions the anticommutator in our superalgebra generates all the BMS vector fields including the Lorentz transformations. We also show that there exists a projection from our BMS Lie superalgebra to the global subalgebra of the Neveu-Schwarz supersymmetries on…
The supertranslation invariance of the Chen-Wang-Yau (CWY) angular momentum in the Bondi-Sachs formalism/gauge was ascertained by the authors in \cite{CKWWY_evol, CWWY_atmp}. In this article, we study the corresponding problem in the double null gauge. In particular, supertranslation ambiguity of this gauge is identified and the CWY angular momentum is proven to be free of this ambiguity. A similar result is obtained for the CWY center of mass integral.
We discuss three different (conformally) Carrollian geometries and their relation to null infinity from the unifying perspective of Cartan geometry. Null infinity \emph{per se} comes with numerous redundancies in its intrinsic geometry and the two other Carrollian geometries can be recovered by making successive choices of gauge. This clarifies the extent to which one can think of null infinity as being a (strongly) Carrollian geometry and we investigate the implications for the corresponding Cartan geometries. The perspective taken, which is that characteristic data for gravity at null infini…
We show that the asymptotic charges associated with Lorentz symmetries on past and future null infinity match in the limit to spatial infinity in a class of asymptotically-flat spacetimes. These are spacetimes that obey the Ashtekar-Hansen definition of asymptotic flatness at null and spatial infinity and satisfy an additional set of conditions which we lay out explicitly. Combined with earlier results on the matching of supertranslation charges, this shows that all Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) charges on past and future null infinity match in the limit to spatial infinity in this class of spacet…
In this short paper, we review recent progress on the positive mass theorem for spacelike hypersurfaces which approach to null infinity in asymptotically flat spacetimes. We use it to prove, if the functions $c(u, θ, ψ)$, $d(u, θ, ψ)$ vanish at certain retarded time in vacuum Bondi's radiating spacetimes, then the Bondi mass is nonnegative up to that time.
It is shown that Ashtekar and Hansens's Universal Structure at Spatial Infinity (SPI), which has recently be used to establish the conservation of supercharges from past null infity to future null infinity, is an example of a (pseudo-) Carollian structure. The relation to Kinematic Algebras is clarified.
We show that the symmetry algebra of asymptotically flat four dimensional spacetimes at null infinity in the sense of Newman and Unti is isomorphic to the direct sum of the abelian algebra of infinitesimal conformal rescalings with bms4. We then work out the local conformal properties of the relevant Newman-Penrose coefficients, as well as the surface charges and their algebra.
By using the Bondi-Sachs-van der Burg formalism we analyze the asymptotic properties at null infinity of axisymmetric electrovacuum spacetimes with a translational Killing vector and, in general, an infinite ``cosmic string'' (represented by a conical singularity) along the axis. Such spacetimes admit only a local null infinity. There is a non-vanishing news function due to the existence of the string even though there is no radiation. We prove that if null infinity has a smooth compact cross section and the spacetime is not flat in a neighbourhood of null infinity, then the translational Kill…
In this article we propose a new geometrization of the radiative phase space of asymptotically flat space-times: we show that the geometry induced on null-infinity by the presence of gravitational waves can be understood to be a generalisation of the tractor calculus of conformal manifolds adapted to the case of degenerate conformal metrics. It follows that the whole formalism is, by construction, manifestly conformally invariant. We first show that a choice of asymptotic shear amounts to a choice of linear differential operator of order two on the bundle of scales of null-infinity. We refer t…
We show that the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar-field equations for wave-like decaying initial data at null infinity have unique local solutions and unique global solutions for small initial data. We also generalize Christodoulou's global generalized solutions to the wave-like decaying initial data. We emphasize that this decaying condition is sharp.
We argue that, in a theory of quantum gravity in a four dimensional asymptotically flat spacetime, all information about massless excitations can be obtained from an infinitesimal neighbourhood of the past boundary of future null infinity and does not require observations over all of future null infinity. Moreover, all information about the state that can be obtained through observations near a cut of future null infinity can also be obtained from observations near any earlier cut although the converse is not true. We provide independent arguments for these two assertions. Similar statements h…
We use the formalism developed by Wald and Zoupas to derive explicit covariant expressions for the charges and fluxes associated with the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs symmetries at null infinity in asymptotically flat spacetimes in vacuum general relativity. Our expressions hold in non-stationary regions of null infinity, are local and covariant, conformally-invariant, and are independent of the choice of foliation of null infinity and of the chosen extension of the symmetries away from null infinity. While similar expressions have appeared previously in the literature in Bondi-Sachs coordinates (to wh…
We follow the spirit of a recent proposal to show that previous computations for asymptotically flat spacetimes in four dimensions at null infinity can be re-interpreted in terms of a well-defined holographic current algebra for the time component of the currents. The analysis is completed by the current algebra for the spatial components.
We discuss how asymptotic quantities, originally introduced on null infinity in terms of Bondi-type gauge conditions, can be calculated near space-like infinity to any desired precision.
It is shown that the precession of a gyroscope can be used to elucidate the nature of the smoothness of the null infinity of an asymptotically flat spacetime (describing an isolated body). A model for which the effects of precession in the non-smooth null infinity case are of order $r^{-2}\ln r$ is proposed. By contrast, in the smooth version the effects are of order $r^{-3}$. This difference should provide an effective criterion to decide on the nature of the smoothness of null infinity.
In asymptotically Minkowski space-times, one finds a surprisingly rich interplay between geometry and physics in both the classical and quantum regimes. On the mathematical side it involves null geometry, infinite dimensional groups, symplectic geometry on the space of gravitational connections and geometric quantization via Kähler structures. On the physical side, null infinity provides a natural home to study gravitational radiation and its structure leads to several interesting effects such as an infinite dimensional enlargement of the Poincaré group, geometrical expressions of energy and m…
We describe our present understanding of the relations between the behaviour of asymptotically flat Cauchy data for Einstein's vacuum field equations near space-like infinity and the asymptotic behaviour of their evolution in time at null infinity.
We prove global existence for solutions arising from small initial data for a large class of quasilinear wave equations satisfying the `weak null condition' of Lindblad and Rodnianski, significantly enlarging upon the class of equations for which global existence is known. In addition to the usual weak null condition, we require a certain hierarchical structure in the semilinear terms. Included in this class are the Einstein equations in harmonic coordinates, so a special case of our results is a new proof of the stability of Minkowski space. Our proof also applies to the coupled Einstein-Maxw…
