In this work we discuss in detail the non-perturbative determination of the momentum dependence of the form factors entering in semileptonic decays using unitarity and analyticity constraints. The method contains several new elements with respect to previous proposals and allows to extract, using suitable two-point functions computed non-perturbatively, the form factors at low momentum transfer $q^2$ from those computed explicitly on the lattice at large $q^2$, without any assumption about their $q^2$-dependence. The approach will be very useful for exclusive semileptonic $B$-meson decays, where the direct calculation of the form factors at low $q^2$ is particularly difficult due to large statistical fluctuations and discretisation effects. As a testing ground we apply our approach to the semileptonic $D \to K \ell ν_\ell$ decay, where we can compare the results of the unitarity approach to the explicit direct lattice calculation of the form factors in the full $q^2$-range. We show that the method is very effective and that it allows to compute the form factors with rather good precision.
Use of semi-leptonic decays has become standard in constraining the Unitarity Triangle. Bearing in mind that precise calculations of these are very challenging, we propose an entirely new approach. In particular the |Vcb| + epsilon_K constraint, which depends extremely sensitively on Vcb in the traditional method, is replaced by the interplay between epsilon_K, BR(B ->tau nu) and Delta M_Bs. It is found that even in this method tensions with the Standard Model persist at the ~1.8 sigma level. Furthermore, improvements on the B -> tau nu branching ratio and on the lattice determination of f_Bs …
We present the results of the application of the Dispersion Matrix approach to exclusive semileptonic $B$-meson decays. This method allows to determine the hadronic form factors in a non-perturbative and completely model-independent way. Starting from lattice results available at large values of the momentum transfer, the behaviour of the form factors in their whole kinematical range is obtained without introducing any parameterization of their momentum dependence. We will focus on the determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements $\vert V_{cb} \vert$ and $\vert V_{ub} \vert$ …
We examine the semileptonic $B \to D^{(*)} \ell ν_\ell$ and $B \to π\ell ν_\ell$ decays adopting the unitarity-based Dispersive Matrix (DM) method, which allows to determine the shape of the relevant hadronic form factors (FFs) in their whole kinematical range, using only lattice QCD results available at large values of the 4-momentum transfer without making any assumption on their momentum dependence. Moreover, the experimental data are not used to constrain the shape of the FFs, but only to obtain our final exclusive determination of $\vert V_{cb} \vert$ and $\vert V_{ub} \vert$, namely: $\v…
We present a new calculation of the $D \rightarrow π, l ν$ semileptonic form factor $f^{D \rightarrow π}_+(q^2)$ at $q^2 = 0$ based on HISQ charm and light valence quarks on MILC $N_f = 2 +1$ lattices. Using methods developed recently for HPQCD's study of $D \rightarrow K, l ν$ decays, we find $f^{D \rightarrow π}_+(0) = 0.666(29)$. This signifies a better than factor of two improvement in errors for this quantity compared to previous calculations. Combining the new result with CLEO-c branching fraction data, we extract the CKM matrix element $|V_{cd}| = 0.225(6)_{exp.}(10)_{lat.}$, where the …
The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element $\vert V_{ub}\vert$ is obtained from exclusive semileptonic $B \to π\ell ν_\ell$ and $B_s \to K \ell ν_\ell$ decays adopting the unitarity-based dispersion matrix approach for the determination of the hadronic form factors (FFs) in the whole kinematical range. We use lattice computations of the relevant susceptibilities and of the FFs in the large-$q^2$ regime in order to derive their behavior in the low-$q^2$ region without assuming any specific momentum dependence and without constraining their shape using experimental data. Then, we address…
We have computed the form factors for B --> pi and D --> K(pi) semileptonic decays on the lattice by using full non-perturbative O(a) improvement, in the quenched approximation. Our results are expressed in terms of few parameters which describe the q^2-dependence and normalization of the form factors.
We present a lattice QCD calculation of the axial $γW$-box diagrams relevant for the kaon semileptonic decays. We utilize a recently proposed method, which connects the electroweak radiative corrections in Sirlin's representation to that in chiral perturbation theory. It allows us to use the axial $γW$-box correction in the SU(3) limit to obtain the low energy constants for chiral perturbation theory. From first principles our results confirm the previously used low energy constants provided by the minimal resonance model with a significant reduction in uncertainties.
In this paper, we review recent calculations of the CKM matrix elements $|V_{cd}|$ and $|V_{cs}|$ from semileptonic and leptonic decays of $D$ and $D_s$ mesons using lattice QCD methods.
We study the $B \to Kl^+l^-$ semileptonic decay process in three-flavor lattice QCD. We analyze several ensembles generated by the MILC collaboration at different lattice spacings and sea-quark masses. We use the asqtad improved staggered action for the light quarks and the clover action with the Fermilab interpretation for the heavy $b$ quark. We present preliminary results for the vector current induced form factors for a range of kaon energies. Our analysis includes chiral and continuum extrapolations based on SU(2) staggered χPT.
The current status of lattice and dispersive bound calculations for exclusive semileptonic B decays is reviewed. Emphasis is placed on decays relevant for the measurement of the sides of the unitarity triangle determined by |V_{ub}| and |V_{cb}|.
We consider the vector and scalar form factors of the charm-changing current responsible for the semileptonic decay D\rightarrow πl ν. Using as input dispersion relations and unitarity for the moments of suitable heavy-light correlators evaluated with Operator Product Expansions, including O(α_s^2) terms in perturbative QCD, we constrain the shape parameters of the form factors and find exclusion regions for zeros on the real axis and in the complex plane. For the scalar form factor, a low energy theorem and phase information on the unitarity cut are also implemented to further constrain the s…
We present an application of the unitarity-based dispersion matrix (DM) approach to the extraction of the CKM matrix element $|V_{cb}|$ from the experimental data on the exclusive semileptonic $B_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}^{(*)} \ell ν_\ell$ decays. The DM method allows to achieve a non-perturbative, model-independent determination of the momentum dependence of the semileptonic form factors. Starting from lattice results available at large values of the 4-momentum transfer and implementing non-perturbative unitarity bound, the behaviour of the form factors in their whole kinematical range is obtained w…
Comparisons of lattice-QCD calculations of semileptonic form factors with experimental measurements often display two sets of points, one each for lattice QCD and experiment. Here we propose to display the output of a lattice-QCD analysis as a curve and error band. This is justified, because lattice-QCD results rely in part on fitting, both for the chiral extrapolation and to extend lattice-QCD data over the full physically allowed kinematic domain. To display an error band, correlations in the fit parameters must be taken into account. For the statistical error, the correlation comes from the…
The tree-level $b\rightarrow c{\ell}\barν_{\ell}$ based hadronic transitions have been on the focus of much attention since recording significant deviations of the experimental data, on the ratios of the branching fractions in $ τ$ and $ e-μ$ channels of the semileptonic $ B \rightarrow D $ transition, from the SM predictions by BaBar Collaboration in 2012. It can be of great importance to look whether similar discrepancies take place in the semileptonic baryonic $Λ_{b}\rightarrow Λ_{c}{\ell}\barν_{\ell}$ decay channel or not. In this accordance we estimate the decay width as well as the ratio…
In lattice QCD, obtaining properties of heavy-light mesons has been easier said than done. Focusing on the $B$ meson's decay constant, it is argued that towards the end of 1997 the last obstacles were removed, at least in the quenched approximation. These developments, which resulted from a fuller understanding and implementation of ideas in effective field theory, bode well for current studies of neutral meson mixing and of semileptonic decays.
The quark flavor sector of the Standard Model is a fertile ground to look for new physics effects through a unitarity test of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. We present a lattice QCD calculation of the scalar and the vector form factors (over a large $q^2$ region including $q^2 = 0$) associated with the $D \rightarrow Klν$ semi-leptonic decay. This calculation will then allow us to determine the central CKM matrix element, $V_{cs}$ in the Standard Model, by comparing the lattice QCD results for the form factors and the experimental decay rate. This form factor calculation has been …
We explore four different strategies to extract the D-meson semileptonic decay form factors from the Green functions computed in QCD numerically on the lattice. From our numerical tests we find that two such strategies, based on the use of double ratios of 3-point correlation functions, lead to an appreciable reduction of systematic uncertainties. This is an important step in reducing the overall uncertainty in the lattice QCD results for the D-decay form factors which are needed to determine the CKM entries |Vcd| and |Vcs| experimentally, that are nowadays known by imposing the unitarity of t…
We present a new method aiming at a non-perturbative, model-independent determination of the momentum dependence of the form factors entering semileptonic decays using unitarity and analyticity constraints. We extend the original proposal and, using suitable two-point functions computed non-perturbatively, we determine the form factors at low-momentum transfer $q^2$ from those computed explicitly on the lattice at large $q^2$, without making any assumption about their $q^2$ dependence. As a training ground we apply the new method to the analysis of the lattice data of the semileptonic $D \righ…
We present some applications of the unitarity-based Dispersion Matrix (DM) approach to the extraction of the CKM matrix element $|V_{cb}|$ from the experimental data on the exclusive $B_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}^{(*)} \ell ν_\ell$ decays. The DM method allows to achieve a non-perturbative, model-independent determination of the momentum dependence of the semileptonic form factors. Starting from lattice results available at large values of the 4-momentum transfer and implementing non-perturbative unitarity bounds, the behaviour of the form factors in their whole kinematical range is obtained without in…
We present an ab initio study of inclusive semileptonic decays of heavy mesons from lattice QCD. Our approach is based on a recently proposed method, that allows one to address the study of these decays from the analysis of smeared spectral functions extracted from four-point correlators on the lattice, where the smearing is defined in terms of the phase-space integration relevant to the inclusive decays. We present results obtained from gauge-field ensembles from the JLQCD and ETM collaborations, and discuss their relation with theoretical predictions from the operator-product expansion.
We present first lattice QCD results for semileptonic form factors for the decays $B_c \to η_c l ν$ and $B_c \to J/ψl ν$ over the full $q^2$ range, using both improved non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) and fully relativistic (HISQ) formalisms. These can be viewed as prototype calculations for pseudoscalar to pseudoscalar and pseudoscalar to vector decays involving a $b \to c$ transition. In particular we can use information from the relativistic computations to fix the NRQCD current normalisations, which can then be used in improved computations of decays such as $B \to D l ν$ and $B \to D^* l ν$.
We present a lattice QCD calculation of the form factors and differential decay rates for semileptonic decays of the heavy-light mesons $B$ and $D$ to the final state $πlν$. The results are obtained with three methodological improvements over previous lattice calculations: a matching procedure that reduces heavy-quark lattice artifacts, the first study of lattice-spacing dependence, and the introduction of kinematic cuts to reduce model dependence. We show that the main systematics are controllable (within the quenched approximation) and outline how the calculations could be improved to aid cu…

We calculate the kaon semileptonic form factor $f_+(0)$ from lattice QCD, working, for the first time, at the physical light-quark masses. We use gauge configurations generated by the MILC collaboration with $N_f=2+1+1$ flavors of sea quarks, which incorporate the effects of dynamical charm quarks as well as those of up, down, and strange. We employ data at three lattice spacings to extrapolate to the continuum limit. Our result, $f_+(0) = 0.9704(32)$, where the error is the total statistical plus systematic uncertainty added in quadrature, is the most precise determination to date. Combining …
We calculate the kaon semileptonic form factors in lattice QCD with three flavors of dynamical overlap quarks. Gauge ensembles are generated at pion masses as low as 290 MeV and at a strange quark mass near its physical value. We precisely calculate relevant meson correlators using the all-to-all quark propagator. Twisted boundary conditions and the reweighting technique are employed to vary the momentum transfer and the strange quark mass. We discuss the chiral behavior of the form factors by comparing with chiral perturbation theory and experiments.
The experimentally measured rates of the semileptonic decays K -> pi l nu and D -> K(pi) l nu can be combined with lattice calculations of the associated form factors to precisely extract the CKM matrix elements |V_{us}| and |V_{cs(d)}|. We report on the status of form factor calculations with Fermilab charm quarks and staggered light quarks on the 2+1 flavor asqtad staggered MILC ensembles. Analysis of data for the D -> pi l nu form factor provides a nontrivial test of our methods via comparison with CLEO data. We discuss the use of HISQ valence quarks to calculate the K -> pi l nu form facto…
We report on our calculation of the kaon semileptonic form factors in Nf=2+1 lattice QCD. Chiral symmetry is exactly preserved by using the overlap quark action for a straightforward comparison with chiral perturbation theory (ChPT). We simulate three pion masses down to 290 MeV at a single lattice spacing of 0.11 fm and at a strange quark mass very close to its physical value. The form factors near zero momentum transfer are precisely calculated by using the all-to-all propagator and twisted boundary conditions. We compare the normalizations and slopes of the form factors with ChPT and experi…
We present new lattice results of the K -> pion semileptonic form factors obtained from simulations with two flavors of dynamical twisted-mass fermions, using pion masses as light as 260 MeV. Our main result is f+(0) = 0.9560 (84), which, combined with the latest experimental data for Kl3 decays, leads to |V_{us}| = 0.2267 (5)_exp (20)_f+(0). Using the PDG(2008) determinations of |Vud| and |Vub| our result implies for the unitarity relation |Vud|**2 + |Vus|**2 + |Vub|**2 = 1.0004 (15). For the O(p**6) term of the chiral expansion of f+(0) we get Df = f+(0) - 1 - f2 = -0.0214 (84).
We present the first results for the Kl3 form factor from simulations with 2+1 flavours of dynamical domain wall quarks. Combining our result, namely f_+(0)=0.964(5), with the latest experimental results for Kl3 decays leads to |V_{us}|=0.2249(14), reducing the uncertaintity in this important parameter. For the O(p^6) term in the chiral expansion we obtain Δf=-0.013(5).
Understanding the properties of the strange $Λ^*$ baryon resonances is a long-standing and fascinating problem. $Λ_c$ charm-baryon semileptonic weak decays to these resonances are highly sensitive to their internal structure and can be used to test theoretical models. We have performed the first lattice-QCD computation of the form factors governing $Λ_c$ semileptonic decays to a $Λ^*$ resonance: the $Λ^*(1520)$, which has negative parity and spin $3/2$. Here we present the resulting Standard-Model predictions of the $Λ_c\toΛ^*(1520)\ell^+ν_\ell$ differential and integrated decay rates as well …
We construct several classes of hadronic matrix elements and relate them to the low-energy constants in Chiral Perturbation Theory that describe the electromagnetic effects in the semileptonic beta decay of the pion and the kaon. We propose to calculate them using lattice QCD, and argue that such a calculation will make an immediate impact to a number of interesting topics at the precision frontier, including the outstanding anomalies in $|V_{us}|$ and the top-row Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix unitarity.
We present the lattice QCD calculation of inclusive semileptonic $B_s$-meson decays. We follow a recently proposed method, which is based on the extraction of smeared spectral densities from Euclidean correlation functions and on the numerical reconstruction of the integration kernel relevant for the inclusive decay rate calculation. We compute four-point Euclidean correlation functions using JLQCD and ETM gauge ensembles with unphysically light $b$-quark masses, and apply two different methods for the integration kernel reconstruction. Finally, we show that the lattice results obtained in thi…
We present a new study of the form factors for D -> K semileptonic decay from lattice QCD that allows us to compare the shape of the vector form factor to experiment and, for the first time, to extract V_cs using results from all experimental q^2 bins. The valence quarks are implemented with the Highly Improved Staggered Quark action on MILC configurations that include u, d and s sea quarks. The scalar and vector currents are nonperturbatively normalised and, using phased boundary conditions, we are able to cover the full q^2 range accessible to experiment. Our result is V_cs = 0.963(5)_{expt}…
We present the first calculation of the kaon semileptonic form factor with sea and valence quark masses tuned to their physical values in the continuum limit of 2+1 flavour domain wall lattice QCD. We analyse a comprehensive set of simulations at the phenomenologically convenient point of zero momentum transfer in large physical volumes and for two different values of the lattice spacing. Our prediction for the form factor is f+(0)=0.9685(34)(14) where the first error is statistical and the second error systematic. This result can be combined with experimental measurements of K->pi decays for …
Small changes in the masses of massive external scattering states should correspond to small changes in the non-perturbative parameterization of form factors in quantum field theory, as long as the relevant energy range is not near strong deformations. Here, the definition of ``small'' is investigated and applied to $SU(3)$ breaking in semileptonic $B_{(s)}\rightarrow D_{(s)}$ transitions. When unitarity and analyticity are imposed, the differences in the form factors for semileptonic $B\rightarrow D$ versus $B_s\rightarrow D_s$ decays are found to be within $\mathcal{O}(1\%)$ over the entire …
We determine the complete set of axial and vector form factors for the Ds to ϕlν decay from full lattice QCD for the first time. The valence quarks are implemented using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark action and we normalise the appropriate axial and vector currents fully nonperturbatively. The q^2 and angular distributions we obtain for the differential rate agree well with those from the BaBar experiment and, from the total branching fraction, we obtain Vcs = 1.017(63), in good agreement with that from D to Klν semileptonic decay. We also find the mass and decay constant of the ϕ meson …
We review recent results of Lattice QCD calculations relevant for flavour physics. We discuss in particular the hadronic parameters entering the amplitudes of K0-K0bar, D0-D0bar and B0-B0bar mixing, the B- and D-meson decay constants and the form factors controlling B-meson semileptonic decays. On the basis of these lattice results, which are extensively collected in the paper, we also derive our averages of the relevant hadronic parameters.
Theoretical and computational advances in lattice calculations are reviewed, with focus on examples relevant to the unitarity triangle of the CKM matrix. Recent progress in semi-leptonic form factors for B -> pi l nu and B -> D* l nu, as well as the parameter ξin B-Bbar mixing, are highlighted.
We present our preliminary results for semileptonic form factors of $D$ mesons in unquenched lattice QCD. Simulations are carried out with $n_f=2+1$ dynamical quarks using gauge configurations generated by the MILC collaboration. For the valence quarks, we adopt an improved staggered light quark action and the clover heavy quark action. Our results for $D \to K$ and $D \to π$ form factors at $q^2=0$ are in agreement with the experimental values.
We report on our study of the D meson semileptonic decays in 2+1 flavor lattice QCD. Gauge ensembles are generated at three lattice cutoffs up to 4.5 GeV and with pion masses as low as 300 MeV. We employ the Moebius domain-wall fermion action for both light and charm quarks. We report our preliminary results for the vector and scalar form factors and discuss their dependence on the momentum transfer, quark masses and lattice spacing.
We present our calculation of D \to pi and D \to K semileptonic form factors in Nf = 2+1 lattice QCD. We simulate three lattice cutoffs 1/a \sim 2.5, 3.6 and 4.5 GeV with pion masses as low as 230 MeV. The Möbius domain-wall action is employed for both light and charm quarks. We present our results for the vector and scalar form factors and discuss their dependence on the lattice spacing, light quark masses and momentum transfer.
We calculate axial vector and vector form factors for the semileptonic decay Ds to phi using HISQ valence quarks on MILC ensembles with 2+1 flavours of asqtad sea quarks. Using twisted boundary conditions to tune the quarks' momenta, we compute form factors at q^2 = 0 on coarse lattices. We find V(0)=0.903(67), A_1(0)= 0.603(20), A_2(0)=0.401(80) and A_0(0)=0.686(17), which we compare to experimental data and previous quenched lattice QCD calculations.
We use the Omnes representation to obtain the q-squared dependence of the form factors f+ and f0 for semileptonic H -> pi decays from the elastic pi H -> pi H scattering amplitudes, where H denotes a B or D meson. The scattering amplitudes used satisfy elastic unitarity and are calculated from two-particle irreducible amplitudes obtained using tree-level heavy meson chiral perturbation theory (HMChPT). The q-squared dependences for the form factors agree with lattice QCD results when the HMChPT coupling constant, g, takes values smaller than 0.32, and confirm the milder dependence of f0 on q-s…
Recent measurements of the branching fraction for D_s -> l nu disagree with the Standard Model expectation, which relies on calculations of $f_{D_s}$ from lattice QCD. This paper uses recent preliminary measurements from CLEO and a new preliminary lattice-QCD result from this conference to update the significance of the discrepancy. The "f_{D_s} puzzle" stands now at 3.5sigma, with sigma predominantly from the statistical uncertainty of the experiments. New physics scenarios that could solve the puzzle would also lead to non-Standard amplitudes mediating the semileptonic decays D -> K l nu. Th…
The measured partial widths of the semileptonic decays D to K l nu and D to pi l nu can be combined with the form factors calculated on the lattice to extract the CKM matrix elements |V_cs| and |V_cd|. The lattice calculations can be checked by comparing the form factor shapes from the lattice and experiment. We have generated a sizable data set by using heavy clover quarks with the Fermilab interpretation for charm and asqtad staggered light quarks on 2+1 flavor MILC ensembles with lattice spacings of approximately 0.12, 0.09, 0.06, and 0.045 fm. Preliminary fits to staggered chiral perturbat…
We present a very high statistics study of D and D_s semileptonic decay form factors on the lattice. We work with MILC N_f=2+1 lattices and use the Highly Improved Staggered Quark action (HISQ) for both the charm and the strange and light valence quarks. We use both scalar and vector currents to determine the form factors f_0(q^2) and f_+(q^2) for a range of D and D_s semileptonic decays, including D to pi and D to K. By using a phased boundary condition we are able to tune accurately to q^2=0 and explore the whole q^2 range allowed by kinematics. We can thus compare the shape in q^2 to that f…
The form factors for the semileptonic decays of heavy-light pseudoscalar mesons of the type $D \to Keν$ are studied in quenched lattice QCD at $β=6.0$ using Wilson fermions. We explore new numerical techniques for improving the signal and study $O(a)$ corrections using three different lattice transcriptions of the vector current. We present a detailed discussion of the relation of these lattice currents to the continuum vector current and show that the disagreement between the previous results is to a large extent due to the value of $Z_V$ used in the calculations. We also present results for …
We present a calculation of the kaon form factors in two-flavor QCD with the non-perturbatively $O(a)$-improved Wilson quark action. In order to achieve a few percent accuracy in the study of SU(3) breaking effects, we use a set of double ratios of the matrix elements, with which the bulk of the statistical fluctuation and the multiplicative renormalization factors cancel.
We present the status of on-going calculations of the $K\toπlν$ and $D\to K(π) lν$ semileptonic form factors at $q^2=0$. These form factors are important for the determination of the CKM matrix elements $\lvert{V_{us}}\rvert$ and $\lvert{V_{cs(d)}}\rvert$ respectively. This work uses the HISQ action for both valence quarks and sea quarks on MILC $N_f=2+1+1$ configurations. We employ twisted boundary conditions to calculate the form factors at zero momentum transfer directly. The $K\toπ$ results are an update to previously published results with new data at the physical point. The $D\to K(π)$ r…
We present results for form factors of semileptonic decays of $D$ and $B$ mesons in 2+1 flavor lattice QCD using the MILC gauge configurations. With an improved staggered action for light quarks, we successfully reduce the systematic error from the chiral extrapolation. The results for $D$ decays are in agreement with experimental ones. The results for B decays are preliminary. Combining our results with experimental branching ratios, we then obtain the CKM matrix elements $|V_{cd}|$, $|V_{cs}|$, $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$. We also check CKM unitarity, for the first time, using only lattice QCD…
We calculate the $B \to D^{(*)} \ell ν$ form factors in 2+1 flavor relativistic lattice QCD by employing the Möbius domain-wall action for all quark flavors. Our simulations are carried out at lattice cut-offs $a^{-1} \sim 2.5$, 3.6 and 4.5 GeV with the bottom quark masses up to 0.7 $a^{-1}$ to control discretization effects. We extrapolate the form factors to the continuum limit and physical quark masses, and discuss systematic uncertainties of the form factors.
