We report on our calculation of the kaon semileptonic form factors in Nf=2+1 lattice QCD. Chiral symmetry is exactly preserved by using the overlap quark action for a straightforward comparison with chiral perturbation theory (ChPT). We simulate three pion masses down to 290 MeV at a single lattice spacing of 0.11 fm and at a strange quark mass very close to its physical value. The form factors near zero momentum transfer are precisely calculated by using the all-to-all propagator and twisted boundary conditions. We compare the normalizations and slopes of the form factors with ChPT and experiments.
We calculate the kaon semileptonic form factors in lattice QCD with three flavors of dynamical overlap quarks. Gauge ensembles are generated at pion masses as low as 290 MeV and at a strange quark mass near its physical value. We precisely calculate relevant meson correlators using the all-to-all quark propagator. Twisted boundary conditions and the reweighting technique are employed to vary the momentum transfer and the strange quark mass. We discuss the chiral behavior of the form factors by comparing with chiral perturbation theory and experiments.
We present the first calculation of the kaon semileptonic form factor with sea and valence quark masses tuned to their physical values in the continuum limit of 2+1 flavour domain wall lattice QCD. We analyse a comprehensive set of simulations at the phenomenologically convenient point of zero momentum transfer in large physical volumes and for two different values of the lattice spacing. Our prediction for the form factor is f+(0)=0.9685(34)(14) where the first error is statistical and the second error systematic. This result can be combined with experimental measurements of K->pi decays for …
We review a novel model-independent approach to the analysis of new-physics effects in the $s\to u\ell^-\barν$ transitions. We apply it to (semi)leptonic kaon decays and study their complementarity with pion and hyperon $β$ decays or with collider searches of new physics.
We present a lattice QCD calculation of the axial $γW$-box diagrams relevant for the kaon semileptonic decays. We utilize a recently proposed method, which connects the electroweak radiative corrections in Sirlin's representation to that in chiral perturbation theory. It allows us to use the axial $γW$-box correction in the SU(3) limit to obtain the low energy constants for chiral perturbation theory. From first principles our results confirm the previously used low energy constants provided by the minimal resonance model with a significant reduction in uncertainties.
We present a new calculation of the K->pi semileptonic form factor at zero momentum transfer in domain wall lattice QCD with Nf=2+1 dynamical quark flavours. By using partially twisted boundary conditions we simulate directly at the phenomenologically relevant point of zero momentum transfer. We perform a joint analysis for all available ensembles which include three different lattice spacings (a=0.09-0.14fm), large physical volumes (m_pi*L>3.9) and pion masses as low as 171 MeV. The comprehensive set of simulation points allows for a detailed study of systematic effects leading to the predict…
We calculate the kaon semileptonic form factors using the two sets of the PACS10 configuration, whose physical volumes are more than (10 fm)$^4$ at the physical point. The lattice spacings are 0.063 and 0.085 fm. The configurations were generated using the Iwasaki gauge action and $N_f=2+1$ stout-smeared nonperturbatively $O(a)$-improved Wilson quark action. From the momentum transfer dependence of the form factors, we evaluate the slope and curvature for the form factors at the zero momentum transfer. Furthermore, we calculate the phase space factor, which is used to obtain $|V_{us}|$ through…
We present a lattice QCD determination of the vector and scalar form factors of the kaon semileptonic decay $K \to π\ell ν$, which is relevant for the determination of the CKM matrix element $|V_{us}|$ from experimental data. Our results are based on the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with Nf = 2+1+1 dynamical fermions. We simulated at three different values of the lattice spacing and with pion masses as small as 210 MeV. Our estimate for the vector form factor at zero 4-momentum transfer is $f_+(0) = 0.9709 (46)$, where the uncertainty is both statist…
The determination of $\vert V_{us}\vert$ from kaon semileptonic decays requires the value of the form factor $f_+(q^2=0)$, which can be calculated precisely on the lattice. We provide the one-loop partially quenched staggered chiral perturbation theory expressions that may be employed to analyze staggered simulations of $f_+(q^2)$ with three light flavors. We consider both the case of a mixed action, where the valence and sea sectors have different staggered actions, and the standard case where these actions are the same. The momentum transfer $q^2$ of the form factor is allowed to have an arb…
We discuss the recent progress in the study of semileptonic kaon and pion decays, including new experimental results, improved electroweak radiative corrections, form factor calculations and isospin-breaking effects. As a result, we obtain $|V_{us}|=0.22309(40)(39)(3)$ from kaon semileptonic decays and $|V_{us}/V_{ud}|=0.22908(66)(41)(40)(2)(1)$ from the ratio between the kaon and pion semileptonic decay rates. We report an apparent violation of the top-row Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix unitarity at a $3.2\sim 5.6σ$ level, and a discrepancy at a $2.2σ$ level between the value of $|V_{us}/V_…
We present a calculation of the kaon form factors in two-flavor QCD with the non-perturbatively $O(a)$-improved Wilson quark action. In order to achieve a few percent accuracy in the study of SU(3) breaking effects, we use a set of double ratios of the matrix elements, with which the bulk of the statistical fluctuation and the multiplicative renormalization factors cancel.
We present the status of on-going calculations of the $K\toπlν$ and $D\to K(π) lν$ semileptonic form factors at $q^2=0$. These form factors are important for the determination of the CKM matrix elements $\lvert{V_{us}}\rvert$ and $\lvert{V_{cs(d)}}\rvert$ respectively. This work uses the HISQ action for both valence quarks and sea quarks on MILC $N_f=2+1+1$ configurations. We employ twisted boundary conditions to calculate the form factors at zero momentum transfer directly. The $K\toπ$ results are an update to previously published results with new data at the physical point. The $D\to K(π)$ r…
We present first results from the QCDSF collaboration for the kaon semileptonic decay form factors at zero momentum transfer, using two flavours of non-perturbatively O(a)-improved Wilson quarks. A lattice determination of these form factors is of particular interest to improve the accuracy on the CKM matrix element |V_us|. Calculations are performed on lattices with lattice spacing of about 0.08 fm with different values of light and strange quark masses, which allows us to extrapolate to chiral limit. Employing double ratio techniques, we are able to get small statistical errors.
The CKM matrix element $|V_{us}|$ can be extracted from the experimental measurement of semileptonic $K\toπ$ decays. The determination depends on theory input for the corresponding vector form factor in QCD. We present a preliminary update on our efforts to compute it in $N_f=2+1$ lattice QCD using domain wall fermions for several lattice spacings and with a lightest pion mass of about $170\,\mathrm{MeV}$. By using partially twisted boundary conditions we avoid systematic errors associated with an interpolation of the form factor in momentum-transfer, while simulated pion masses near the physi…
We investigate the vector form factor relevant for the $K_{\ell 3}$ semileptonic decay using maximally twisted-mass fermions with 4 dynamical flavours ($N_f=2+1+1$). Our simulations feature pion masses ranging from $210$ MeV to approximately $450$ MeV and lattice spacing values as small as $0.06$fm. Our main result for the vector form factor at zero 4-momentum transfer is $f_+(0)=0.9683(65)$ where the uncertainty is both statistical and systematic. By combining our result with the experimental value of $f_+(0)|V_{us}|$ we obtain $|V_{us}|=0.2234(16)$, which satisfies the unitarity constraint o…
We review recent progress in calculating kaon spectrum, pseudoscalar meson decay constants, $B_K$, $ε'/ε$, $K\to ππ$ matrix elements, kaon semileptonic form factors, and moments of kaon distribution amplitudes on the lattice. We also address the issue of how best to improve the staggered fermion formulation for the action and operators.
We report on the status of our kaon semileptonic form factor calculations using the highly-improved staggered quark (HISQ) formulation to simulate the valence fermions. We present results for the form factor f_+^{K π}(0) on the asqtad N_f=2+1 MILC configurations, discuss the chiral-continuum extrapolation, and give a preliminary estimate of the total error. We also present a more preliminary set of results for the same form factor but with the sea quarks also simulated with the HISQ action; these results include data at the physical light quark masses. The improvements that we expect to achiev…
We present preliminary results for the kaon semileptonic form factors using the PACS10 configurations, whose physical volume is more than (10 fm)$^3$ at the physical point with the lattice spacings of 0.085 and 0.064 fm. The configurations were generated using the Iwasaki gauge action and $N_f=2+1$ stout-smeared Clover quark action. For the continuum extrapolation, we calculate the form factors with the local and conserved vector currents. The form factors in the two lattice spacings are extrapolated to the continuum limit using a fit function based on the NLO SU(3) ChPT formula with terms cor…
We discuss the reduction of errors in the calculation of the form factor $f_+^{K π}(0)$ with HISQ fermions on the $N_f=2+1+1$ MILC configurations from increased statistics on some key ensembles, new data on ensembles with lattice spacings down to 0.042 fm and the study of finite-volume effects within staggered ChPT. We also study the implications for the unitarity of the CKM matrix in the first row and for current tensions with leptonic determinations of $\vert V_{us}\vert$.
We discuss the result of a recent quenched lattice calculation of the K -> pi vector form factor at zero-momentum transfer, relevant for the determination of |V_us| from K-> pi l nu decays. Using suitable double ratios of three-point correlation functions, we show that it is possible to calculate this quantity at the percent-level precision. The leading quenched effects are corrected for by means of quenched chiral perturbation theory. The final result, f+(0) = 0.960 +- 0.005_stat +- 0.007_syst, turns out to be in good agreement with the old quark model estimate made by Leutwyler and Roos. In …

The two most precise determinations of the CKM matrix element V_us are based on the analyses of leptonic and semileptonic kaon decays. These studies also rely on the lattice QCD calculations of two hadronic parameters, namely the ratio of the kaon and pion decay constants, f_K+/f_pi+, and the kaon semileptonic vector form factor at zero momentum transfer, f_+(0). In this talk, I review the recent lattice results for these quantities, by showing that the sub-percent accuracy required by the phenomenological analyses has been reached by lattice QCD. As best estimates of the lattice calculations …
The Lattice results for the pion and kaon decay constants are analysed within the Resonance Chiral Theory framework in the large NC limit. The approximately linear behaviour of the observable at large light-quark mass is explained through the interaction with the lightest multiplet of scalar resonances. The analysis of the Lattice results allows to obtain the resonance mass MS=1049 +- 25 MeV and the Chiral Perturbation Theory parameters at leading order in 1/NC.
We show that recent improvements in the $O(α)$ long-distance quantum electrodynamics (QED) corrections to the radiative inclusive $K_{e3}$ decay rate using the Sirlin representation are free from infrared divergences and collinear electron mass singularities in the limit $m_e\rightarrow0$, as predicted by the Kinoshita-Lee-Nauenberg theorem. We also verify that in massless QED with the simultaneous dimensional regularization of QED photon infrared divergences and electron mass singularities leads to the same result for the inclusive rate in the limit of four space-time dimensions. The equivale…
Using staggered fermions and twisted boundary conditions, we calculate the K meson semileptonic decay vector form factor at zero momentum transfer. The HISQ formulation is used for the valence quarks, while the sea quarks are simulated with the asqtad action (MILC N_f=2+1 configurations). For the chiral and continuum extrapolation we use two-loop continuum CHPT, supplemented by partially quenched staggered CHPT at one loop. Our result is f_+^{Kπ}(0) = 0.9667+-0.0023+-0.0033, where the first error is statistical and the second is the sum in quadrature of the systematic uncertainties. This resul…
We describe two recent developments of the radiative correction theory in semileptonic beta decays. For neutron, a novel dispersive analysis of the $γW$-box diagram making use of neutrino scattering data leads to an improved precision and a shifted central value of $V_{ud}$; for kaon, an appropriate combination of meson form factors, lattice QCD inputs and chiral perturbation theory gives a much-improved determination of the radiative corrections in semileptonic kaon decays. These new calculations help to unveil/sharpen a series of anomalies in the measurements of $V_{ud}$ and $V_{us}$ that ma…

We introduce four-point functions in the hadronic ladder resummation approach to large $N_c$ QCD Green functions. We determine the relevant one to calculate the $B_K$ kaon parameter in the chiral limit. This four-point function contains both the large momenta QCD OPE and the small momenta ChPT at NLO limits, analytically. We get $\hat B_K^χ= 0.38 \pm 0.15$. We also give the ChPT result at NLO for the relevant four-point function to calculate $B_K$ outside the chiral limit, while the leading QCD OPE is the same as the chiral limit one.
We calculate the pion and kaon electromagnetic form factors in finite volume for a generic momentum transfer in space-like region, using SU(3) chiral perturbation theory. To this end, we first find the hadronic matrix element in a new form which is suitable for our calculation in finite volume. We present our numerical findings for the chiral behavior and finite volume corrections and compare these for pion and kaon form factors. As a result, for the pion electromagnetic form factor we find the finite volume correction $ΔF^π_{em} = 0.0041$ at momentum transfer $q^2 = -0.1358$ and for the kaon …
I review lattice calculations and results for hadronic parameters relevant for kaon physics, in particular the vector form factor f+(0) of semileptonic kaon decays, the ratio fK/fpi of leptonic decay constants and the kaon bag parameter BK. For each lattice calculation a colour code rating is assigned, by following a procedure which is being proposed by the Flavianet Lattice Averaging Group (FLAG), and the following final averages are obtained: f+(0)=0.962(3)(4), fK/fpi = 1.196(1)(10) and \hat BK = 0.731(7)(35). In the last part of the talk, the present status of lattice studies of non-leptoni…
In this talk, I first motivate the use of Chiral Perturbation Theory in the context of Lattice QCD. In particular, I explain how partially quenched QCD, which has, in general, unequal valence- and sea-quark masses, can be used to obtain real-world (i.e. unquenched) results for low-energy constants. In the second part, I review how Chiral Perturbation Theory may be used to overcome theoretical difficulties which afflict the computation of non-leptonic kaon decay rates from Lattice QCD. I argue that it should be possible to determine at least the O(p^2) weak low-energy constants reliably from nu…
We investigate the vector and scalar form factors relevant for K_{\ell 3} semileptonic decays using maximally twisted-mass fermions with two flavors of dynamical quarks (N_f = 2). The simulations cover pion masses as light as 260 MeV and four values of the lattice spacing, ranging from ~0.05 up to ~0.1 fm, which allow to compute directly, for the first time, the continuum limit for the vector form factor at zero-momentum transfer, f_+(0). The preliminary result is f_+(0) = 0.9544(68), where the error is statistical only. We also extrapolate both form factors to the physical point and study the…
We compute the hadronic matrix elements of the four-quark operators needed for the study of neutral kaon mixing beyond the Standard Model (SM). We use nf=2+1 flavours of domain-wall fermions (DWF) which exhibit good chiral-flavour symmetry. The renormalization is performed non-perturbatively through the RI-MOM scheme and our results are converted perturbatively to MSbar. The computation is performed on a single lattice spacing a=0.086 fm with a lightest unitary pion mass of 290 MeV. The various systematic errors, including the discretisation effects, are estimated and discussed. Our results co…
Using recent precise hadronic tau-decay data on the V-A spectral function, and general properties of QCD such as analyticity, the operator product expansion and chiral perturbation theory, we get accurate values for the QCD chiral order parameters L_10^r(M_rho) and C_87^r(M_rho). These two low-energy constants appear at order p^4 and p^6, respectively, in the chiral perturbation theory expansion of the V-A correlator. At order p^4 we obtain L_10^r(M_rho) = -(5.22\pm 0.06)10^{-3}. Including in the analysis the two-loop (order p^6) contributions, we get L_10^r(M_rho) = -(4.06\pm 0.39)10^{-3} and…
We show that long distance contributions to the rare decays K -> pi nu nu-bar and K -> pi l+ l- can be computed using lattice QCD. The proposed approach requires well established methods, successfully applied in the calculations of electromagnetic and semileptonic form factors. The extra power divergences, related to the use of weak four-fermion operators, can be eliminated using only the symmetries of the lattice action without ambiguities or complicated non-perturbative subtractions. We demonstrate that this is true even when a lattice action with explicit chiral symmetry breaking is employe…
We compute the renormalisation factors (Z-matrices) of the $ΔF=2$ four-quark operators needed for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) kaon mixing. We work with nf=2+1 flavours of Domain-Wall fermions whose chiral-flavour properties are essential to maintain a continuum-like mixing pattern. We introduce new RI-SMOM renormalisation schemes, which we argue are better behaved compared to the commonly-used corresponding RI-MOM one. We find that, once converted to MS, the Z-factors computed through these RI-SMOM schemes are in good agreement but differ significantly from the ones computed through the RI…
We calculate the scalar semileptonic kaon decay in finite volume at the momentum transfer $t_{m} = (m_{K} - m_π)^2$, using chiral perturbation theory. At first we obtain the hadronic matrix element to be calculated in finite volume. We then evaluate the finite size effects for two volumes with $L = 1.83 fm$ and $L= 2.73 fm$ and find that the difference between the finite volume corrections of the two volumes are larger than the difference as quoted in \cite{Boyle2007a}. It appears then that the pion masses used for the scalar form factor in ChPT are large which result in large finite volume co…
We consider the dependence of the pion and kaon decay constants on the up, down and strange quark masses in QCD with strict isospin symmetry. The role of dynamical vector meson degrees of freedom is scrutinized in terms of an effective chiral Lagrangian for vector mesons. Applying a set of low-energy parameters as determined previously from QCD lattice data on the masses of the light vector mesons from PACS-CS, QCDSF-UKQCD and HSC we compute its implications on the pion and kaon decay constants for QCD lattice ensembles of HPQCD, CLS and ETMC. It is shown that with Gasser-Leutwyler L_4 and L_5…
Semileptonic, B --> pi l,nu, decays are studied on the MILC dynamical configurations using NRQCD heavy and Asqtad light quarks. We work with light valence quark masses ranging between m_s and m_s/8. Preliminary simple linear chiral extrapolations have been carried out for form factors f_para and f_perp at fixed E_pi. The chirally extrapolated results for the form factors f_+(q^2) and f_0(q^2) are then fit to the Becirevic-Kaidalov (BK) ansatz. Preliminary estimates of the CKM matrix element |V_{ub}| are presented based on the recently published branching fractions for B exclusive semileptonic …
Two-flavor chiral expansions provide a useful perturbative framework to study hadron properties. Such expansions should exhibit marked improvement over the conventional three-flavor chiral expansion. Although one can theoretically formulate two-flavor theories for the various hyperon multiplets, the nearness of kaon thresholds can seriously undermine the effectiveness of the perturbative expansion in practice. We investigate the importance of virtual kaon thresholds on hyperon properties, specifically their masses and isovector axial charges. Using a three-flavor expansion that includes SU(3) …
We calculate the kaon B-parameter, B_K, to next-to-leading order in staggered chiral perturbation theory. We extend the usual power counting to include the effects of using perturbative (rather than non-perturbative) matching factors. Taste breaking enters through the O(a^2) terms in the effective action, through mixing with higher-dimension operators, and through the truncation of matching factors. These effects cause mixing with several additional operators, complicating the chiral and continuum extrapolations. We summarize the results here; all details can be found in hep-lat/0507012.
We study the $B \to Kl^+l^-$ semileptonic decay process in three-flavor lattice QCD. We analyze several ensembles generated by the MILC collaboration at different lattice spacings and sea-quark masses. We use the asqtad improved staggered action for the light quarks and the clover action with the Fermilab interpretation for the heavy $b$ quark. We present preliminary results for the vector current induced form factors for a range of kaon energies. Our analysis includes chiral and continuum extrapolations based on SU(2) staggered χPT.
We investigate the parton-distribution functions (PDFs) for the positively charged pion and kaon at a low-renormalization scale ~ 1 GeV. To this end, we employ the gauge-invariant effective chiral action from the nonlocal chiral-quark model, resulting in that the vector currents are conserved. All the model parameters are determined phenomenologically with the normalization condition for PDF and the empirical values for the pseudoscalar-meson weak-decay constants. We consider the momentum dependence of the effective quark mass properly within the model calculations. It turns out that the leadi…
We show how to compute chiral logarithms that take into account both the $\cO(a^2)$ taste-symmetry breaking of staggered fermions and the fourth-root trick that produces one taste per flavor. The calculation starts from the Lee-Sharpe Lagrangian generalized to multiple flavors. An error in a previous treatment by one of us is explained and corrected. The one loop chiral logarithm corrections to the pion and kaon masses in the full (unquenched), partially quenched, and quenched cases are computed as examples.
We calculate the form factors for the semileptonic decays of heavy-light pseudoscalar mesons in partially quenched staggered chiral perturbation theory (\schpt), working to leading order in $1/m_Q$, where $m_Q$ is the heavy quark mass. We take the light meson in the final state to be a pseudoscalar corresponding to the exact chiral symmetry of staggered quarks. The treatment assumes the validity of the standard prescription for representing the staggered ``fourth root trick'' within \schpt by insertions of factors of 1/4 for each sea quark loop. Our calculation is based on an existing partiall…
We present a detailed description of the method and results of our calculation of the kaon B parameter using the Wilson quark action in quenched QCD at $β=5.9-6.5$. The mixing problem of the $Δs=2$ four-quark operators is solved non-perturbatively with full use of chiral Ward identities. We find $B_K(NDR, 2 GeV)=0.562(64)$ in the continuum limit, which agrees with the value obtained with the Kogut-Susskind quark action.
Two-flavor chiral expansions provide a useful perturbative framework to study hadron properties. Such expansions should exhibit marked improvement over the conventional three-flavor chiral expansion. Although in principle one can formulate two-flavor theories for the various hyperon multiplets, the nearness of kaon thresholds can seriously undermine the effectiveness of such two-flavor theories in practice. We investigate the importance of virtual kaon thresholds on hyperon properties, specifically their isovector axial charges and electromagnetic observables. In particular we uncover the unde…
Lattice QCD calculations with different staggered valence and sea quarks can be used to improve determinations of quark masses, Gasser-Leutwyler couplings, and other parameters relevant to phenomenology. We calculate the masses and decay constants of flavored pions and kaons through next-to-leading order in staggered-valence, staggered-sea mixed-action chiral perturbation theory. We present the results in the valence-valence and valence-sea sectors, for all tastes. As in unmixed theories, the taste-pseudoscalar, valence-valence mesons are exact Goldstone bosons in the chiral limit, at non-zero…
I critically review recent lattice QCD results relevant for kaon phenomenology, as well as the methods that are used to obtain them. The focus is on calculations with N_f=2 and N_f=2+1 flavors of sea quarks. Concerning methodology, the subjects covered include a discussion of how best to extrapolate and/or interpolate results to the physical quark-mass point, a scheme for assessing the extent to which a lattice QCD calculation includes the various effects required to compute a given quantity reliably and a procedure for averaging lattice results. The phenomenological topics that I review compr…
We study semileptonic B decays, using MILC dynamical configurations with $N_f=2+1$. NRQCD heavy and AsqTad light quark actions are used. We obtain the semileptonic form factors $f_+(q^2)$ and $f_0(q^2)$ in the chiral limit.
I review lattice calculations of quantities that involve light quarks, including light quark masses, the vector form factor f_+(0) needed for semileptonic kaon decays, and kaon mixing. Results for most of these quantities are now available from multiple groups. Averages of these results are presented, along with a discussion of the methodology behind the averaging procedure. Recent progress in calculations of K->pi pi matrix elements is also reviewed.
Different versions of improved staggered fermions can be used as valence quarks to reduce discretization effects in lattice QCD calculations while increasing statistics on existing staggered gauge ensembles. Such mixed-action simulations can be used to improve determinations of light quark masses, Gasser-Leutwyler couplings, decay constants, and other parameters relevant to particle phenomenology. We recall the generalization of ordinary, unmixed staggered chiral perturbation theory required to describe data from lattice calculations with a mixed action such as with HYP staggered valence quark…
We fill up the missing piece in our own re-analysis of the long-distance electromagnetic radiative corrections to semileptonic kaon decays by performing a rigorous study in the $K\rightarrowπμ^+ν_μ(γ)$ channels. With appropriate experimental and lattice inputs, we achieve a precision level of $10^{-4}$ in these channels. This is comparable to our previous analysis in the $K\rightarrowπe^+ν_e(γ)$ channels. With this new result, we present an updated global analysis to extract the Standard Model parameter $|V_{us}|$ from semileptonic kaon decays. We obtain $|V_{us}|=0.22308(55)$ and $0.22356(73)…
