In this paper we provide two new semantics for proofs in the constructive modal logics CK and CD. The first semantics is given by extending the syntax of combinatorial proofs for propositional intuitionistic logic, in which proofs are factorised in a linear fragment (arena net) and a parallel weakening-contraction fragment (skew fibration). In particular we provide an encoding of modal formulas by means of directed graphs (modal arenas), and an encoding of linear proofs as modal arenas equipped with vertex partitions satisfying topological criteria. The second semantics is given by means of winning innocent strategies of a two-player game over modal arenas. This is given by extending the Heijltjes-Hughes-Straßburger correspondence between intuitionistic combinatorial proofs and winning innocent strategies in a Hyland-Ong arena. Using our first result, we provide a characterisation of winning strategies for games on a modal arena corresponding to proofs with modalities.
There are logics where necessity is defined by means of a given identity connective: $\squareφ:= φ\equiv\top$ ($\top$ is a tautology). On the other hand, in many standard modal logics the concept of propositional identity (PI) $φ\equivψ$ can be defined by strict equivalence (SE) $\square(φ\leftrightarrowψ)$. All these approaches to modality involve a principle that we call the Collapse Axiom (CA): "There is only one necessary proposition." In this paper, we consider a notion of PI which relies on the identity axioms of Suszko's non-Fregean logic $\mathit{SCI}$. Then $S3$ proves to be the small…
We define a family of propositional constructive modal logics corresponding each to a different classical modal system. The logics are defined in the style of Wijesekera's constructive modal logic, and are both proof-theoretically and semantically motivated. On the one hand, they correspond to the single-succedent restriction of standard sequent calculi for classical modal logics. On the other hand, they are obtained by incorporating the hereditariness of intuitionistic Kripke models into the classical satisfaction clauses for modal formulas. We show that, for the considered classical logics, …

The modal logic S4 can be used via a Curry-Howard style correspondence to obtain a lambda-calculus. Modal (boxed) types are intuitively interpreted as `closed syntax of the calculus'. This lambda-calculus is called modal type theory --- this is the basic case of a more general contextual modal type theory, or CMTT. CMTT has never been given a denotational semantics in which modal types are given denotation as closed syntax. We show how this can indeed be done, with a twist. We also use the denotation to prove some properties of the system.
The probabilistic (or quantitative) modal mu-calculus is a fixed-point logic de- signed for expressing properties of probabilistic labeled transition systems (PLTS). Two semantics have been studied for this logic, both assigning to every process state a value in the interval [0,1] representing the probability that the property expressed by the formula holds at the state. One semantics is denotational and the other is a game semantics, specified in terms of two-player stochastic games. The two semantics have been proved to coincide on all finite PLTS's, but the equivalence of the two semantics …
In this paper, we introduce a general family of sequent-style calculi over the modal language and its fragments to capture the essence of all constructively acceptable systems. Calling these calculi \emph{constructive}, we show that any strong enough constructive sequent calculus, satisfying a mild technical condition, feasibly admits all Visser's rules, i.e., there is a polynomial time algorithm that reads a proof of the premise of a Visser's rule and provides a proof for its conclusion. As a positive application, we show the feasible admissibility of Visser's rules in several sequent calculi…
We present deductive systems for various modal logics that can be obtained from the constructive variant of the normal modal logic CK by adding combinations of the axioms d, t, b, 4, and 5. This includes the constructive variants of the standard modal logics K4, S4, and S5. We use for our presentation the formalism of nested sequents and give a syntactic proof of cut elimination.
I overview the work of the Tbilisi school on intuitionistic modal logics of well-founded/scattered structures and its connections with contemporary theoretical computer science. Fixed-point theorems and their consequences are of particular interest.
We define a family of intuitionistic non-normal modal logics; they can bee seen as intuitionistic counterparts of classical ones. We first consider monomodal logics, which contain only one between Necessity and Possibility. We then consider the more important case of bimodal logics, which contain both modal operators. In this case we define several interactions between Necessity and Possibility of increasing strength, although weaker than duality. For all logics we provide both a Hilbert axiomatisation and a cut-free sequent calculus, on its basis we also prove their decidability. We then give…
This is a survey of λ-calculi that, through the Curry-Howard isomorphism, correspond to constructive modal logics. We cover the prehistory of the subject and then concentrate on the developments that took place in the 1990s and early 2000s. We discuss logical aspects, modal λ-calculi, and their categorical semantics. The logics underlying the calculi surveyed are constructive versions of K, K4, S4, and LTL.
The logics CS4 and IS4 are intuitionistic variants of the modal logic S4. Whether the finite model property holds for each of these logics has been a long-standing open problem. In this paper we introduce two logics closely related to IS4: GS4, obtained by adding the Godel-Dummett axiom to IS4, and S4I, obtained by reversing the roles of the modal and intuitionistic relations. We then prove that CS4, GS4, and S4I all enjoy the finite model property.
We present constructive provability logic, an intuitionstic modal logic that validates the Löb rule of Gödel and Löb's provability logic by permitting logical reflection over provability. Two distinct variants of this logic, CPL and CPL*, are presented in natural deduction and sequent calculus forms which are then shown to be equivalent. In addition, we discuss the use of constructive provability logic to justify stratified negation in logic programming within an intuitionstic and structural proof theory.

This thesis introduces the "method of structural refinement", which serves as a means of transforming the relational semantics of a modal and/or constructive logic into an 'economical' proof system by connecting two proof-theoretic paradigms: labelled and nested sequent calculi. The formalism of labelled sequents has been successful in that cut-free calculi in possession of desirable proof-theoretic properties can be automatically generated for large classes of logics. Despite these qualities, labelled systems make use of a complicated syntax that explicitly incorporates the semantics of the a…
The probabilistic modal μ-calculus is a fixed-point logic designed for expressing properties of probabilistic labeled transition systems (PLTS's). Two equivalent semantics have been studied for this logic, both assigning to each state a value in the interval [0,1] representing the probability that the property expressed by the formula holds at the state. One semantics is denotational and the other is a game semantics, specified in terms of two-player stochastic parity games. A shortcoming of the probabilistic modal μ-calculus is the lack of expressiveness required to encode other important tem…
We prove a generic completeness result for a class of modal fixpoint logics corresponding to flat fragments of the two-way mu-calculus, extending earlier work by Santocanale and Venema. We observe that Santocanale and Venema's proof that least fixpoints in the Lindenbaum-Tarski algebra of certain flat fixpoint logics are constructive, using finitary adjoints, no longer works when the converse modality is introduced. Instead, our completeness proof directly constructs a model for a consistent formula, using the induction rule in a way that is similar to the standard completeness proof for propo…
In this paper we show that the intuitionistic monotone modal logic $\mathsf{iM}$ has the uniform Lyndon interpolation property (ULIP). The logic $\mathsf{iM}$ is a non-normal modal logic on an intuitionistic basis, and the property ULIP is a strengthening of interpolation in which the interpolant depends only on the premise or the conclusion of an implication, respecting the polarities of the propositional variables. Our method to prove ULIP yields explicit uniform interpolants and makes use of a terminating sequent calculus for $\mathsf{iM}$ that we have developed for this purpose. As far as …
In this paper, a proof-theoretic method to prove uniform Lyndon interpolation for non-normal modal and conditional logics is introduced and applied to show that the logics $\mathsf{E}$, $\mathsf{M}$, $\mathsf{EN}$, $\mathsf{MN}$, $\mathsf{MC}$, $\mathsf{K}$, and their conditional versions, $\mathsf{CE}$, $\mathsf{CM}$, $\mathsf{CEN}$, $\mathsf{CMN}$, $\mathsf{CMC}$, $\mathsf{CK}$, in addition to $\mathsf{CKID}$ have that property. In particular, it implies that these logics have uniform interpolation. Although for some of them the latter is known, the fact that they have uniform Lyndon interpo…
C. I. Lewis invented modern modal logic as a theory of "strict implication". Over the classical propositional calculus one can as well work with the unary box connective. Intuitionistically, however, the strict implication has greater expressive power than the box and allows to make distinctions invisible in the ordinary syntax. In particular, the logic determined by the most popular semantics of intuitionistic K becomes a proper extension of the minimal normal logic of the binary connective. Even an extension of this minimal logic with the "strength" axiom, classically near-trivial, preserves…

We define a model for linear logic based on two well-known ingredients: games and simulations. This model is interesting in the following respect: while it is obvious that the objects interpreting formulas are games and that everything is developed with the intuition of interaction in mind, the notion of morphism is very different from traditional morphisms in games semantics. In particular, we make no use of the notion of strategy! The resulting structure is very different from what is usually found in categories of games. We start by defining several constructions on those games and show, us…
We establish proof-theoretic, constructive and coalgebraic foundations for proof search in coinductive Horn clause theories. Operational semantics of coinductive Horn clause resolution is cast in terms of coinductive uniform proofs; its constructive content is exposed via soundness relative to an intuitionistic first-order logic with recursion controlled by the later modality; and soundness of both proof systems is proven relative to a novel coalgebraic description of complete Herbrand models.
We consider a simple modal logic whose non-modal part has conjunction and disjunction as connectives and whose modalities come in adjoint pairs, but are not in general closure operators. Despite absence of negation and implication, and of axioms corresponding to the characteristic axioms of (e.g.) T, S4 and S5, such logics are useful, as shown in previous work by Baltag, Coecke and the first author, for encoding and reasoning about information and misinformation in multi-agent systems. For such a logic we present an algebraic semantics, using lattices with agent-indexed families of adjoint pai…

Modal logics have proved useful for many reasoning tasks in symbolic artificial intelligence (AI), such as belief revision, spatial reasoning, among others. On the other hand, mathematical morphology (MM) is a theory for non-linear analysis of structures, that was widely developed and applied in image analysis. Its mathematical bases rely on algebra, complete lattices, topology. Strong links have been established between MM and mathematical logics, mostly modal logics. In this paper, we propose to further develop and generalize this link between mathematical morphology and modal logic from a t…
In this paper we develop a 2-valued reduction of many-valued logics, into 2-valued multi-modal logics. Such an approach is based on the contextualization of many-valued logics with the introduction of higher-order Herbrand interpretation types, where we explicitly introduce the coexistence of a set of algebraic truth values of original many-valued logic, transformed as parameters (or possible worlds), and the set of classic two logic values. This approach is close to the approach used in annotated logics, but offers the possibility of using the standard semantics based on Herbrand interpretati…
We propose $\mathcal{E}^{\downarrow}$-logic as a formal foundation for the specification and development of event-based systems with local data states. The logic is intended to cover a broad range of abstraction levels from abstract requirements specifications up to constructive specifications. Our logic uses diamond and box modalities over structured actions adopted from dynamic logic. Atomic actions are pairs $e /ψ$ where $e$ is an event and $ψ$ a state transition predicate capturing the allowed reactions to the event. To write concrete specifications of recursive process structures we integ…
The paper presents a constructive fixpoint semantics for autoepistemic logic (AEL). This fixpoint characterizes a unique but possibly three-valued belief set of an autoepistemic theory. It may be three-valued in the sense that for a subclass of formulas F, the fixpoint may not specify whether F is believed or not. The paper presents a constructive 3-valued semantics for autoepistemic logic (AEL). We introduce a derivation operator and define the semantics as its least fixpoint. The semantics is 3-valued in the sense that, for some formulas, the least fixpoint does not specify whether they are …
