We propose $\mathcal{E}^{\downarrow}$-logic as a formal foundation for the specification and development of event-based systems with local data states. The logic is intended to cover a broad range of abstraction levels from abstract requirements specifications up to constructive specifications. Our logic uses diamond and box modalities over structured actions adopted from dynamic logic. Atomic actions are pairs $e /ψ$ where $e$ is an event and $ψ$ a state transition predicate capturing the allowed reactions to the event. To write concrete specifications of recursive process structures we integrate (control) state variables and binders of hybrid logic. The semantic interpretation relies on event/data transition systems; specification refinement is defined by model class inclusion. For the presentation of constructive specifications we propose operational event/data specifications allowing for familiar, diagrammatic representations by state transition graphs. We show that $\mathcal{E}^{\downarrow}$-logic is powerful enough to characterise the semantics of an operational specification by a single $\mathcal{E}^{\downarrow}$-sentence. Thus the whole development process can rely on $\mathcal{E}^{\downarrow}$-logic and its semantics as a common basis. This includes also a variety of implementation constructors to support, among others, event refinement and parallel composition.
Building on our previous work on hybrid polyadic modal logic we identify modal logic equivalents for Matching Logic, a logic for program specification and verification. This provides a rigorous way to transfer results between the two approaches, which should benefit both systems.
Relation-changing modal logics are extensions of the basic modal logic that allow changes to the accessibility relation of a model during the evaluation of a formula. In particular, they are equipped with dynamic modalities that are able to delete, add, and swap edges in the model, both locally and globally. We provide translations from these logics to hybrid logic along with an implementation. In general, these logics are undecidable, but we use our translations to identify decidable fragments. We also compare the expressive power of relation-changing modal logics with hybrid logics.
Game semantics and winning strategies offer a potential conceptual bridge between semantics and proof systems of logics. We illustrate this link for hybrid logic -- an extension of modal logic that allows for explicit reference to worlds within the language. The main result is that the systematic search of winning strategies over all models can be finitized and thus reformulated as a proof system.
We propose a hybrid-dynamic first-order logic as a formal foundation for specifying and reasoning about reconfigurable systems. As the name suggests, the formalism we develop extends (many-sorted) first-order logic with features that are common to hybrid logics and to dynamic logics. This provides certain key advantages for dealing with reconfigurable systems, such as: (a) a signature of nominals, including operation and relation symbols, that allows references to specific possible worlds / system configurations -- as in the case of hybrid logics; (b) distinguished signatures of rigid and flex…
We present simple new Hoare logics and refinement calculi for hybrid systems in the style of differential dynamic logic. (Refinement) Kleene algebra with tests is used for reasoning about the program structure and generating verification conditions at this level. Lenses capture hybrid program stores in a generic algebraic way. The approach has been formalised with the Isabelle/HOL proof assistant. A number of examples explains the workflow with the resulting verification components.
Linear implication can represent state transitions, but real transition systems operate under temporal, stochastic or probabilistic constraints that are not directly representable in ordinary linear logic. We propose a general modal extension of intuitionistic linear logic where logical truth is indexed by constraints and hybrid connectives combine constraint reasoning with logical reasoning. The logic has a focused cut-free sequent calculus that can be used to internalize the rules of particular constrained transition systems; we illustrate this with an adequate encoding of the synchronous st…
We present a terminating tableau calculus for graded hybrid logic with global modalities, reflexivity, transitivity and role hierarchies. Termination of the system is achieved through pattern-based blocking. Previous approaches to related logics all rely on chain-based blocking. Besides being conceptually simple and suitable for efficient implementation, the pattern-based approach gives us a NExpTime complexity bound for the decision procedure.
In previous works, a tableau calculus has been defined, which constitutes a decision procedure for hybrid logic with the converse and global modalities and a restricted use of the binder. This work shows how to extend such a calculus to multi-modal logic enriched with features largely used in description logics: transitivity and relation inclusion assertions. The separate addition of either transitive relations or relation hierarchies to the considered decidable fragment of multi-modal hybrid logic can easily be shown to stay decidable, by resorting to results already proved in the literature.…

We present a tool for verification of hybrid systems expressed in the sequential fragment of HCSP (Hybrid Communicating Sequential Processes). The tool permits annotating HCSP programs with pre- and postconditions, invariants, and proof rules for reasoning about ordinary differential equations. Verification conditions are generated from the annotations following the rules of hybrid Hoare logic. We designed labeling and highlighting mechanisms to distinguish and visualize different verification conditions. The tool is implemented in Python and has a web-based user interface. We evaluated the ef…
The complexity of modern software systems entails the need for reconfiguration mechanisms gov- erning the dynamic evolution of their execution configurations in response to both external stimulus or internal performance measures. Formally, such systems may be represented by transition systems whose nodes correspond to the different configurations they may assume. Therefore, each node is en- dowed with, for example, an algebra, or a first-order structure, to precisely characterise the semantics of the services provided in the corresponding configuration. Hybrid logics, which add to the modal de…
We continue our investigation into hybrid polyadic multi-sorted logic with a focus on expresivity related to the operational and axiomatic semantics of rogramming languages, and relations with first-order logic. We identify a fragment of the full logic, for which we prove sound and complete deduction and we show that it is powerful enough to represent both the programs and their semantics in an uniform way. Although weaker than other hybrid systems previously developed, this system is expected to have better computational properties. Finally, we provide a standard translation from full hybrid …

Open Answer Set Programming (OASP) is an undecidable framework for integrating ontologies and rules. Although several decidable fragments of OASP have been identified, few reasoning procedures exist. In this article, we provide a sound, complete, and terminating algorithm for satisfiability checking w.r.t. Forest Logic Programs (FoLPs), a fragment of OASP where rules have a tree shape and allow for inequality atoms and constants. The algorithm establishes a decidability result for FoLPs. Although believed to be decidable, so far only the decidability for two small subsets of FoLPs, local FoLPs…
The main difficulty when modelling gene networks is the identification of the parameters that govern their dynamics. It is particularly difficult for models in which time is continuous: parameters have real values which cannot be enumerated. The widespread idea is to infer new constraints that reduce the range of possible values. Here we present a new work based on a particular class of Hybrid automata (inspired by Thomas discrete models) where discrete parameters are replaced by signed celerities. We propose a new approach involving Hoare logic and weakest precondition calculus (a la Dijkstra…

HyLL (Hybrid Linear Logic) and SELL (Subexponential Linear Logic) are logical frameworks that have been extensively used for specifying systems that exhibit modalities such as temporal or spatial ones. Both frameworks have linear logic (LL) as a common ground and they admit (cut-free) complete focused proof systems. The difference between the two logics relies on the way modalities are handled. In HyLL, truth judgments are labelled by worlds and hybrid connectives relate worlds with formulas. In SELL, the linear logic exponentials (!, ?) are decorated with labels representing locations, and an…
Hybrid games are models which combine discrete, continuous, and adversarial dynamics. Game logic enables proving (classical) existence of winning strategies. We introduce constructive differential game logic (CdGL) for hybrid games, where proofs that a player can win the game correspond to computable winning strategies. This is the logical foundation for synthesis of correct control and monitoring code for safety-critical cyber-physical systems. Our contributions include novel static and dynamic semantics as well as soundness and consistency.
In this article we show that hybrid type-logical grammars are a fragment of first-order linear logic. This embedding result has several important consequences: it not only provides a simple new proof theory for the calculus, thereby clarifying the proof-theoretic foundations of hybrid type-logical grammars, but, since the translation is simple and direct, it also provides several new parsing strategies for hybrid type-logical grammars. Second, NP-completeness of hybrid type-logical grammars follows immediately. The main embedding result also sheds new light on problems with lambda grammars/abs…
Signal temporal logic (STL) was introduced for monitoring temporal properties of continuous-time signals for continuous and hybrid systems. Differential dynamic logic (dL) was introduced to reason about the end states of a hybrid program. Over the past decade, STL and its variants have significantly gained in popularity in the industry for monitoring purposes, while dL has gained in popularity for verification of hybrid systems. In this paper, we bridge the gap between the two different logics by introducing signal temporal dynamic logic (STdL) -- a dynamic logic that reasons about a subset of…

Hybrid logic extends modal logic with support for reasoning about individual states, designated by so-called nominals. We study hybrid logic in the broad context of coalgebraic semantics, where Kripke frames are replaced with coalgebras for a given functor, thus covering a wide range of reasoning principles including, e.g., probabilistic, graded, default, or coalitional operators. Specifically, we establish generic criteria for a given coalgebraic hybrid logic to admit named canonical models, with ensuing completeness proofs for pure extensions on the one hand, and for an extended hybrid langu…
In recent work, comonads and associated structures have been used to analyse a range of important notions in finite model theory, descriptive complexity and combinatorics. We extend this analysis to Hybrid logic, a widely-studied extension of basic modal logic, which corresponds to the bounded fragment of first-order logic. In addition to characterising the various resource-indexed equivalences induced by Hybrid logic and the bounded fragment, and the associated combinatorial decompositions of structures, we also give model-theoretic characterisations of bounded formulas in terms of invariance…
In the present paper, we develop the algorithmic correspondence theory for hybrid logic with binder. We define the class of Sahlqvist inequalities, each inequality of which is shown to have a first-order frame correspondent effectively computable by an algorithm ALBA.
The paper introduces a knowledge representation language that combines the event calculus with description logic in a logic programming framework. The purpose is to provide the user with an expressive language for modelling and analysing systems that evolve over time. The approach is exemplified with the logic programming language as implemented in the Fusemate system. The paper extends Fusemate's rule language with a weakly DL-safe interface to the description logic $\cal ALCIF$ and adapts the event calculus to this extended language. This way, time-stamped ABoxes can be manipulated as fluent…
Differential game logic (dGL) is a logic for specifying and verifying properties of hybrid games, i.e. games that combine discrete, continuous, and adversarial dynamics. Unlike hybrid systems, hybrid games allow choices in the system dynamics to be resolved adversarially by different players with different objectives. The logic dGL can be used to study the existence of winning strategies for such hybrid games, i.e. ways of resolving the player's choices in some way so that he wins by achieving his objective for all choices of the opponent. Hybrid games are determined, i.e. from each state, one…
Combining higher-order abstract syntax and (co)induction in a logical framework is well known to be problematic. Previous work described the implementation of a tool called Hybrid, within Isabelle HOL, which aims to address many of these difficulties. It allows object logics to be represented using higher-order abstract syntax, and reasoned about using tactical theorem proving and principles of (co)induction. In this paper we describe how to use it in a multi-level reasoning fashion, similar in spirit to other meta-logics such as Twelf. By explicitly referencing provability in a middle layer c…

Hybrid probabilistic logic programs can represent several scenarios thanks to the expressivity of Logic Programming extended with facts representing discrete and continuous distributions. The semantics for this type of programs is crucial since it ensures that a probability can be assigned to every query. Here, following one recent semantics proposal, we illustrate a concrete syntax, and we analyse the syntactic requirements needed to preserve the well-definedness.
This paper presents a dynamic logic $d\mathcal{L}_\text{CHP}$ for compositional deductive verification of communicating hybrid programs (CHPs). CHPs go beyond the traditional mixed discrete and continuous dynamics of hybrid systems by adding CSP-style operators for communication and parallelism. A compositional proof calculus is presented that modularly verifies CHPs including their parallel compositions from proofs of their subprograms by assumption-commitment reasoning in dynamic logic. Unlike Hoare-style assumption-commitments, $d\mathcal{L}_\text{CHP}$ supports intuitive symbolic execution…
In the present article, we extend the fragment of inductive formulas for the hybrid language L(@) in [8] including a McKinsey-like formula, and show that every formula in the extended class has a first-order correspondent, by modifying the algorithm hybrid-ALBA in [8]. We also identify a subclass of this extended inductive fragment, namely the extended skeletal formulas, which extend the class of skeletal formulas in [8], each formula in which axiomatize a complete hybrid logic. Our proof method here is proof-theoretic, following [10, 19] and [3, Chapter 14], in contrast to the algebraic proof…
This thesis focuses on advancing probabilistic logic programming (PLP), which combines probability theory for uncertainty and logic programming for relations. The thesis aims to extend PLP to support both discrete and continuous random variables, which is necessary for applications with numeric data. The first contribution is the introduction of context-specific likelihood weighting (CS-LW), a new sampling algorithm that exploits context-specific independencies for computational gains. Next, a new hybrid PLP, DC#, is introduced, which integrates the syntax of Distributional Clauses with Bayesi…
We present the first direct tableau decision procedure with the ExpTime complexity for HPDL (Hybrid Propositional Dynamic Logic). It checks whether a given ABox (a finite set of assertions) in HPDL is satisfiable. Technically, it combines global caching with checking fulfillment of eventualities and dealing with nominals. Our procedure contains enough details for direct implementation and has been implemented for the TGC2 (Tableaux with Global Caching) system. As HPDL can be used as a description logic for representing and reasoning about terminological knowledge, our procedure is useful for p…
We extend the constructive differential game logic (CdGL) of hybrid games with a refinement connective that relates two hybrid games. We use this connective to prove a folk theorem relating hybrid games to hybrid systems.
In the present paper, we continue the research in \cite{Zh21c} to develop the Sahlqvist-type completeness theory for hybrid logic with satisfaction operators and downarrow binders $\mathcal{L}(@, \downarrow)$. We define the class of skeletal Sahlqvist formulas for $\mathcal{L}(@, \downarrow)$ following the ideas in \cite{ConRob}, but we follow a different proof strategy which is purely proof-theoretic, namely showing that for every skeletal Sahlqvist formula $ϕ$ and its hybrid pure correspondence $π$, $\mathbf{K}_{\mathcal{H}(@, \downarrow)}+ϕ$ proves $π$, therefore $\mathbf{K}_{\mathcal{H}(@,…
The satisfiability problem of hybrid logics with the downarrow binder is known to be undecidable. This initiated a research program on decidable and tractable fragments. In this paper, we investigate the effect of restricting the propositional part of the language on decidability and on the complexity of the satisfiability problem over arbitrary, transitive, total frames, and frames based on equivalence relations. We also consider different sets of modal and hybrid operators. We trace the border of decidability and give the precise complexity of most fragments, in particular for all fragments …
Hybrid Knowledge Bases based on Lifschitz's logic of Minimal Knowledge with Negation as Failure are a successful approach to combine the expressivity of Description Logics and Logic Programming in a single language. Their syntax, defined by Motik and Rosati, disallows function symbols. In order to define a well-founded semantics for MKNF HKBs, Knorr et al. define a partition of the modal atoms occurring in it, called the alternating fixpoint partition. In this paper, we propose an iterated fixpoint semantics for HKBs with function symbols. We prove that our semantics extends Knorr et al.'s, in…
In probabilistic reasoning, the traditionally discrete domain has been elevated to the hybrid domain encompassing additionally continuous random variables. Inference in the hybrid domain, however, usually necessitates to condone trade-offs on either the inference on discrete or continuous random variables. We introduce a novel approach based on weighted model integration and algebraic model counting that circumvents these trade-offs. We then show how it supports knowledge compilation and exact probabilistic inference. Moreover, we introduce the hybrid probabilistic logic programming language H…
Probabilistic specifications are fast gaining ground as a tool for statistical modeling of probabilistic systems. One of the main goals of formal methods in this domain is to ensure that specific behavior is present or absent in the system, up to a certain confidence threshold, regardless of the way it operates amid uncertain information. This paper presents a rewriting logic semantics for a probabilistic extension of Event-B, a proof-based formal method for discrete systems modeling. The proposed semantics adequately captures the three sources of probabilistic behavior, namely, probabilistic …
We address a fundamental mismatch between the combinations of dynamics that occur in cyber-physical systems and the limited kinds of dynamics supported in analysis. Modern applications combine communication, computation, and control. They may even form dynamic distributed networks, where neither structure nor dimension stay the same while the system follows hybrid dynamics, i.e., mixed discrete and continuous dynamics. We provide the logical foundations for closing this analytic gap. We develop a formal model for distributed hybrid systems. It combines quantified differential equations with qu…
