We compute the local coefficient attached to a pair $(π_1,π_2)$ of supercuspidal (complex) representations of the general linear group using the theory of types and covers à la Bushnell-Kutzko. In the process, we obtain another proof of a well-known formula of Shahidi for the corresponding Plancherel constant. The approach taken here can be adapted to other situations of arithmetic interest within the context of the Langlands-Shahidi method, particularly, to that of a Siegel Levi subgroup inside a classical group.
We discuss certain Eisenstein series on arithmetic quotients of loop groups, G^, which are associated to cusp forms on finite-dimensional groups associated with maximal parabolics of G^.
Intertwining operators play an essential role and appear everywhere in the Langlands program, their analytic properties interact directly, yet deeply with the decomposition of parabolic induction locally and the residues of Eisenstein series globally. Inspired by the profound Langlands-Shahidi theory, Casselman-Shahidi conjectured that a certain normalization factor would govern the singularity of intertwining operators for generic standard modules. Indeed, motivated by the theory of theta correspondence, especially the Siegel-Weil formula globally, and the composition problem of degenerate pr…
In the case of split $GSpin$ groups, we prove an equality of $L$-functions between automorphic local $L$-functions defined by the Langlands-Shahidi method and local Artin $L$-functions. Our method of proof is based on previous results of the first author which allow to reduce the problem to supercuspidal representations of Levi subgroups of $GSpin$, by constructing Langlands parameters for general generic irreducible admissible representations of $GSpin $ from the one for generic irreducible supercuspidal representations of its Levi subgroups.
We firstly discuss properties of the L-group for Brylinski-Deligne (BD) extensions constructed by M. Weissman. Secondly, the Gindikin-Karpelevich (GK) formula for arbitrary BD extensions is computed and expressed in terms of naturally defined elements of the group. We show that the GK formula can be interpreted as Langlands-Shahidi type L-functions associated with the ajoint action of the L-group of the Levi on certain Lie algebras. As a consequence, the constant term of Eisenstein series for BD extensions could be expressed in terms of global (partial) Langlands-Shahidi type L-functions. In t…
In this paper we gives the Langlands parameters of Langlands' packets of discrete series using the twisted endoscopy as explained by Arthur; this holds for orthogonal, symplectic, unitary and G-Spin groups and gives the most simple proof available. We have assume that the groups are quasi-split but this is just for simplicity. The proof explaines first what is the classification from the representation's theory point of view; this gives the Langlands' packets purely in terms of representation theory. And then using the theory of L-function of Shahidi and the doubling method of Rallis and Piate…
By applying the residue method for period integrals and Langlands-Shahidi's theory for residues of Eisenstein series, we study the period integrals for six spherical varieties. For each spherical variety, we prove a relation between the period integrals and certain automorphic L-functions. In some cases, we also study the local multiplicity of the spherical varieties.
We show the equality of the local Asai L-functions defined via the Rankin-Selberg method and the Langlands-Shahidi method for a square integrable representation of GL(n,E). As a consequence we characterise reducibility of certain induced representations of U(n,n), and the image of the base change map from U(n) to GL(n,E) in terms of GL(n,F)-distinguishedness.
Given a split classical group of symplectic type and a split general linear group over a local field $F$, we use Langlands-Shahidi method to construct their Rankin-Selberg local $γ$-factors and prove the corresponding analytic stability for generic representations. The idea generalizes the work of J. Cogdell, F. Shahidi, T.-L. Tsai in 2017 and D. She in 2023 in the study of asymptotic behaviors of partial Bessel functions. Different from the known cases, suppose $P=MN$ is the maximal parabolic subgroup with Levi component $M\simeq \mathrm{GL}_r\times\mathrm{Sp}_{2m}$ that defines the local fac…
We develop the local theory of the generalized doubling method for the $m$-fold central extension $Sp_{2n}^{(m)}$ of Matsumoto of the symplectic group. We define local $γ$-, $L$- and $ε$-factors for pairs of genuine representations of $Sp_{2n}^{(m)}\times\widetilde{GL}_k$ and prove their fundamental properties, in the sense of Shahidi. Here $\widetilde{GL}_k$ is the central extension of $GL_k$ arising in the context of the Langlands--Shahidi method for covering groups of $Sp_{2n}\times GL_k$. We then construct the complete $L$-function for cuspidal representations and prove its global function…
We describe an evolving and conjectural extension of the Langlands program for a class of nonlinear covering groups of algebraic origin studied by Brylinski-Deligne. In particular, we describe the construction of an L-group extension of such a covering group (over a split reductive group) due to Weissman, study some of its properties and discuss a variant of it. Using this L-group extension, we describe a local Langlands correspondence for covering (split) tori and unramified genuine representations, using work of Savin, McNamara, Weissman and W.W. Li. Finally, we define the notion of automorp…
Let $K$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. We study the geometry and cohomology of the tamely ramified cover of Drinfeld's symmetric space over $K.$ We prove, in a purely local way, that the cohomology in middle degree realises the local Langlands correspondence and local Jacquet-Langlands correspondence for the depth zero supercuspidal representations.
In this paper, we give a new construction of the tame local Langlands correspondence for GL(n,F), n a prime, where F is a p-adic field. In the tame case, supercuspidal representations of GL(n,F) are parameterized by characters of elliptic tori, but the local Langlands correspondence is unnatural because it involves a twist by some character of the torus. Taking the cue from real groups, supercuspidal representations should instead be parameterized by characters of covers of tori. Over the reals, Harish-Chandra described the characters of discrete series restricted to compact tori. They are nat…
In this paper, we extend our result on a depth preserving property of the local Langlands correspondence for quasi-split unitary groups (arXiv:1804.10901) to non-quasi-split unitary groups by using the local theta correspondence. The key ingredients are a depth preserving property of the local theta correspondence proved by Pan and a description of the local theta correspondence via the local Langlands correspondence established by Gan--Ichino. To combine them, we compare splittings for metaplectic covers of unitary groups constructed by Kudla with those constructed by Pan.
In this joint introduction to an Asterisque volume, we give a short discussion of the historical developments in the study of nonlinear covering groups, touching on their structure theory, representation theory and the theory of automorphic forms. This serves as a historical motivation and sets the scene for the papers in the volume. Our discussion is necessarily subjective and will undoubtedly leave out the contributions of many authors, to whom we apologize in earnest.
We study the geometry and the cohomology of the tamely ramified cover of Drinfeld's $p$-adic symmetric space. For this tame level, we prove, in a purely local way, most of a conjecture of Harris on the form of the $\ell$-adic cohomologies, as well as the torsion freeness of the integral cohomology. During the study, we obtain some results of independent interest on the coefficient systems over the Bruhat-Tits building associated to $GL_d(K).$
In this paper, we give a new realization of the local Langlands correspondence for PGL(2,F), where F is a p-adic field of odd residual characteristic. In this case, supercuspidal representations of PGL(2,F) are parameterized by characters of elliptic tori. Taking a cue from real groups, we propose that supercuspidal representations are naturally parameterized by characters of covers of tori. Over the reals, Harish-Chandra defined the discrete series representations by specifying their characters restricted to an elliptic torus, and these characters may naturally be expressed in terms of charac…
Langlands has described the irreducible admissible representations of $T$, when $T$ is the group of points of an algebraic torus over a local field. Also, Langlands described the automorphic representations of $T_{\mathbb A}$ when $T_{\mathbb A}$ is the group of adelic points of an algebraic torus over a global field $F$. We describe irreducible (in the local setting) and automorphic (in the global setting) $ε$-genuine representations for covers of tori, also known as metaplectic tori, which arise from a framework of Brylinski and Deligne. In particular, our results include a description of sp…
Let $F/F_{\mathsf{o}}$ be a quadratic extension of non-archimedean locally compact fields of odd residual characteristic and $σ$ be its non-trivial automorphism. We show that any $σ$-self-dual cuspidal representation of ${\rm GL}_n(F)$ contains a $σ$-self-dual Bushnell--Kutzko type. Using such a type, we construct an explicit test vector for Flicker's local Asai $L$-function of a ${\rm GL}_n(F_{\mathsf{o}})$-distinguished cuspidal representation and compute the associated Asai root number. Finally, by using global methods, we compare this root number to Langlands--Shahidi's local Asai root num…
Let F be a p-adic field and n a positive integer. The local Langlands conjecture asserts the existence of a bijection between irreducible admissible representations of GL(n,F) and n-dimensional admissible representations of the Weil-Deligne group of F. This bijection is required to satisfy certain natural compatibilities, of which the most important is compatibility with local functional equations (preservation of L and epsilon factors of pairs). It is enough to construct a bijection with these properties between supercuspidal representations of GL(n,F) and n-dimensional irreducible representa…
Let $G$ be a symplectic group over a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero and odd residual characteristic. Given an irreducible cuspidal representation of G, we determine its Langlands parameter (equivalently, its Jordan blocks in the language of Moeglin) in terms of the local data from which the representation is explicitly constructed, up to a possible unramified twist in each block of the parameter. We deduce a Ramification Theorem for $G$, giving a bijection between the set of endo-parameters for $G$ and the set of restrictions to wild inertia of discrete Langlands parameters …
To a torus T over a local field F and a subset of its character module subject to certain properties, we associate a canonical double cover of the topological group T(F). We further associate an L-group to this double cover and establish a natural bijection between L-parameters valued in this L-group and genuine characters of the double cover. When T is a maximal torus of a connected reductive group G, we show that there is a canonical L-embedding from the L-group of the double cover of T to the L-group of G. This leads to a canonical factorization of Langlands parameters. We associate to a ge…
In the present article we define coverings of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties attached to a connected reductive group over a local field of characteristic $p > 0$. In the case of $\GL_2$, the unramified part of the local Langlands correspondence is realized in the $\ell$-adic cohomology of these varieties. We show this by giving a detailed comparison with the realization of local Langlands via cuspidal types by Bushnell-Henniart. All proofs are purely local.
In one article, the author has defined an L-group associated to a cover of a quasisplit reductive group over a local or global field. In another article, Wee Teck Gan and Fan Gao define (following an unpublished letter of the author) an L-group associated to a cover of a pinned split reductive group over a local or global field. In this short note, we give an isomorphism between these L-groups. In this way, the results and conjectures discussed by Gan and Gao are compatible with those of the author. Both support the same Langlands-type conjectures for covering groups.
We incorporate covers of quasisplit reductive groups into the Langlands program, defining an L-group associated to such a cover. We work with all covers that arise from extensions of quasisplit reductive groups by $\mathbf{K}_2$ -- the class studied by Brylinski and Deligne. We use this L-group to parameterize genuine irreducible representations in many contexts, including covers of split tori, unramified representations, and discrete series for double covers of semisimple groups over $\mathbb R$. An appendix surveys torsors and gerbes on the étale site, as they are used in the construction of…
We incorporate nonlinear covers of quasisplit reductive groups into the Langlands program, defining an L-group associated to such a cover. This L-group is an extension of the absolute Galois group of a local or global field $F$ by a complex reductive group. The L-group depends on an extension of a quasisplit reductive $F$-group by $\mathbf{K}_2$, a positive integer $n$ (the degree of the cover), an injective character $ε\colon μ_n \rightarrow {\mathbb C}^\times$, and a separable closure of $F$. Our L-group is consistent with previous work on covering groups, and its construction is contravaria…
We describe the structure of the Whittaker or Gelfand-Graev module on a $n$-fold metaplectic cover of a $p$-adic group $G$ at both the Iwahori and spherical level. We express our answer in terms of the representation theory of a quantum group at a root of unity attached to the Langlands dual group of $G$. To do so, we introduce an algebro-combinatorial model for these modules and develop for them a Kazhdan-Lusztig theory involving new generic parameters. These parameters can either be specialized to Gauss sums to recover the $p$-adic theory or to the natural grading parameter in the representa…
Motivated by geometric Langlands, we initiate a program to study the mirror symmetry between nilpotent orbit closures of a semisimple Lie algebra and those of its Langlands dual. The most interesting case is $B_n$ via $C_n$. Classically, there is a famous Springer duality between special orbits. Therefore, it is natural to speculate that the mirror symmetry we seek may coincide with Springer duality in the context of special orbits. Unfortunately, such a naive statement fails. To remedy the situation, we propose a conjecture which asserts the mirror symmetry for certain parabolic/induced cover…
One aspect of the Langlands program for linear groups is lifting of characters, which relates virtual representations on a group $G$ with those on an endoscopic group for $G$. The goal of this paper is to extend this theory to nonlinear two-fold covers of real groups in the simply laced case. Suppose $\tG$ is a two-fold cover of a real reductive group $G$. The main result is that there is an operation, denoted $\Lift_G^{\tG}$, taking a stable virtual character of $G$ to 0 or a virtual genuine character of $\tG$, and $\Lift_G^{\tG}(Θ_π)$ may be explicitly computed if $π$ is a stable sum of stan…
Representation theory of $p$-adic groups naturally comes in the study of automorphic forms and one way to understand representations of a group is by restricting to its nice subgroups. D. Prasad studied the restriction for pairs $({\rm GL}_{2}(E), {\rm GL}_{2}(F))$ and $({\rm GL}_{2}(E), D_{F}^{\times})$ where $E/F$ is a quadratic equation and $D_{F}$ is the unique quaternion division algebra, and $D_{F}^{\times} \hookrightarrow {\rm GL}_{2}(E)$. Prasad proved a multiplicity one result and a `dichotomy' relating the restriction for the pairs $({\rm GL}_{2}(E), {\rm GL}_{2}(F))$ and $({\rm GL}_…
In this article, we study the De Rham cohomology of the first cover in the Lubin-Tate tower. In particular, we get a purely local proof that the supercuspidal part realizes the local Jacquet-Langlands correspondence for ${\rm GL}_n$ by comparing it to the rigid cohomology of some Deligne-Lusztig varieties. The representations obtained are analogous to the ones appearing in the $\ell$-adic cohomology if we forget the action of the Weil group. The proof relies on the generalization of an excision result of Grosse-Klönne and on the existence of a semi-stable model constructed by Yoshida for which…
