We explore the constraints on the three-nucleon force (3NF) of chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT) that are provided by bound-state observables in the $A=3$ and $A=4$ sectors. Our statistically rigorous analysis incorporates experimental error, computational method uncertainty, and the uncertainty due to truncation of the $χ$EFT expansion at next-to-next-to-leading order. A consistent solution for the ${}^3$H binding energy, the ${}^4$He binding energy and radius, and the ${}^3$H $β$-decay rate can only be obtained if $χ$EFT truncation errors are included in the analysis. All of these except the $β$-decay rate give essentially degenerate constraints on the 3NF low-energy constants, so it is crucial for estimating these parameters. We use eigenvector continuation for fast and accurate emulation of No-Core Shell Model calculations of the considered few-nucleon observables. This facilitates sampling of the posterior probability distribution, allowing us to also determine the distributions of the hyperparameters that quantify the truncation error. We find a $χ$EFT expansion parameter of $Q=0.33 \pm 0.06$ for these observables.
We review the recent baryon chiral perturbation theory results for the nucleon polarisabilities that describe the different regimes of nucleon Compton scattering --- real, virtual, and doubly virtual. We stress the importance of the empirical verification of the theory in the context of the calculation of the inelastic nucleon structure corrections, such as the two-photon exchange contributions. We also discuss the recently obtained constraints that relate the different regimes of nucleon Compton scattering and can provide additional information on the nucleon structure.
We calculate the form factors of the electromagnetic nucleon-to-$Δ$-resonance transition to third chiral order in manifestly Lorentz-invariant chiral effective field theory. For the purpose of generating a systematic power counting, the complex-mass scheme is applied in combination with the small-scale expansion. We fit the results to available empirical data.
We report on the construction of an accurate relativistic chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction up to the next-to-next-to-leading (NNLO) order. We compare the so-obtained neutron-proton phaseshifts with the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) nonrelativistic ones and we show that up to $T_\mathrm{lab.}=200$ MeV, the relativistic chiral nuclear force can describe the PWA93 phaseshifts and inelasticities as well as its N$^3$LO nonrelativistic counterparts. As a result, the relativistic chiral nuclear force can be readily used for relativistic ab initio nuclear structure, reaction, as we…
I give a summary of recent results on nucleon polarizabilities, with emphasis on chiral perturbation theory. The predictive calculations of Compton scattering off the nucleon are compared to recent empirical determinations and lattice QCD calculations of the polarizabilities, thereby testing chiral perturbation theory in the single-baryon sector.
We construct a relativistic chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction up to the next-to-next-to-leading order in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. We show that a good description of the $np$ phase shifts up to $T_\mathrm{lab}=200$ MeV and even higher can be achieved with a $\tildeχ^2/\mathrm{d.o.f.}$ less than 1. Both the next-to-leading order results and the next-to-next-to-leading order results describe the phase shifts equally well up to $T_\mathrm{lab}=200$ MeV, but for higher energies, the latter behaves better, showing satisfactory convergence. The relativistic chiral potential provi…
Using baryon chiral perturbation theory including vector mesons, we analyse various continuum contributions to the isoscalar electromagnetic spectral functions of the nucleon induced by the leading order couplings.
Chiral perturbation theory has to be substantially modified for the problem of nuclear forces. Loop effects dominate over tree level effects. The dominant behaviours in the scalar isoscalar channel and multi-nucleon forces are obtained in the chiral limit and for a small explicit breaking.
In the past decades, it has been shown that the three-body force is necessary for a fully microscopic understanding of nuclear many-body systems, and thus efficient schemes for storing and utilizing three-body matrix elements have been developed. However, three-body matrix elements still demand a lot of memory and/or storage and it readily exceeds the limitation of the state-of-the-art supercomputers. We explore the possibility of mimicking the effects of three-body forces in medium-mass region, especially lower $pf$ shell, by density-dependent effective nucleon-nucleon interactions combining …
A dynamical investigation of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction by using the resonating group method (RGM) in a chiral SU(3) quark model has been revisited. The considered quark-quark interaction includes, besides the one-gluon exchange (OGE) and the phenomenological confinement potential, the nonet scalar and pseudoscalar meson exchanges derived from the spontaneous SU(3) chiral symmetry breaking. The physical consistency requirement that the wave functions of single baryons satisfy the minimums of the Hamiltonian has been strictly imposed in determination of the model parameters. The calcu…
Motivated by the successes of relativistic theories in studies of atomic/molecular and nuclear systems and the need for a relativistic chiral force in relativistic nuclear structure studies, we explore a new relativistic scheme to construct the nucleon-nucleon interaction in the framework of covariant chiral effective field theory. The chiral interaction is formulated up to leading order with covariant power counting and a Lorentz invariant chiral Lagrangian. We find that the relativistic scheme induces all six spin operators needed to describe the nuclear force. A detailed investigation of th…
We study the nucleon's partonic angular momentum (AM) content at peripheral transverse distances $b = \mathcal{O}(M_π^{-1})$, where the structure is governed by chiral dynamics. We compute the nucleon form factors of the energy-momentum tensor in chiral effective field theory (ChEFT) and construct the transverse densities of AM at fixed light-front time. In the periphery the spin density is suppressed, and the AM is predominantly orbital. In the first-quantized representation of ChEFT in light-front form, the field-theoretical AM density coincides with the quantum-mechanical orbital AM density…
We derive the axion-nucleon interaction Lagrangian in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order. The effective axion-nucleon coupling is calculated to a few percent accuracy.
We adopt a covariant version of the naive dimensional analysis and construct the chiral two-nucleon contact Lagrangian constrained by Lorentz, parity, charge conjugation, hermitian conjugation, and chiral symmetries. We show that at $\mathcal{O}(q^0)$, $\mathcal{O}(q^2)$, $\mathcal{O}(q^4)$, where $q$ denotes a generic small quantity, there are 4, 13, and 23 terms, respectively. We find that by performing $1/m_N$ expansions, the covariant Lagrangian reduces to the conventional non-relativistic one, which includes 2, 7, and 15 terms at each corresponding order.
We discuss the current status of chiral effective field theory in the three-nucleon sector and present selected results for nucleon-deuteron scattering observables based on semilocal momentum-space-regularized chiral two-nucleon potentials together with consistently regularized three-nucleon forces up to third chiral order. Using a Bayesian model for estimating truncation errors, the obtained results are found to provide a good description of the experimental data. We confirm our earlier findings that a high-precision description of nucleon-deuteron scattering data below pion production thresh…
We outline and review the computations of polarized and unpolarized nucleon structure functions within the bosonized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio chiral soliton model. We focus on a consistent regularization prescription for the Dirac sea contribution and present numerical results from that formulation. We also reflect on previous calculations on quark distributions in chiral quark soliton models and attempt to put them into perspective.
To obtain an understanding of the structure and reactions of nuclear systems from first principles has been a long-standing goal of nuclear physics. In this respect, few- and many-body systems provide a unique laboratory for studying nuclear interactions. During the past decades, the development of accurate representations of the nuclear force has undergone substantial progress. Particular emphasis has been devoted to chiral effective field theory (EFT), a low-energy effective representation of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Within chiral EFT, many studies have been carried out dealing with the…
We extend the standard second order effective chiral Lagrangian of pions and nucleons by considering the coupling to an external gravitational field. As an application we calculate one-loop corrections to the one-nucleon matrix element of the energy-momentum tensor to fourth order in chiral counting, and next-to-leading order tree-level amplitude of the pion-production in an external gravitational field. We discuss the relation of the obtained results to experimentally measurable observables. Our expressions for the chiral corrections to the nucleon gravitational form factors differ from those…
We employ a variety of ab initio methods including Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations, No-Core Configuration Interaction Approach, Coupled-Cluster Theory and In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group to perform a comprehensive analysis of the nucleon-deuteron elastic and breakup reactions and selected properties of light and medium-mass nuclei up to 48Ca using the recently constructed semilocal coordinate-space regularized chiral nucleon-nucleon potentials. We compare the results with those based on selected phenomenological and chiral EFT two-nucleon potentials, discuss the convergence pattern of …
We apply a recently proposed covariant power counting in nucleon-nucleon interactions to study strangeness $S=-1$ $ΛN-ΣN$ interactions in chiral effective field theory. At leading order, Lorentz invariance introduces 12 low energy constants, in contrast to the heavy baryon approach, where only five appear. The Kadyshevsky equation is adopted to resum the potential in order to account for the non-perturbative nature of hyperon-nucleon interactions. A fit to the $36$ hyperon-nucleon scattering data points yields $χ^2\simeq 16$, which is comparable with the sophisticated phenomenological models a…
