In the past decades, it has been shown that the three-body force is necessary for a fully microscopic understanding of nuclear many-body systems, and thus efficient schemes for storing and utilizing three-body matrix elements have been developed. However, three-body matrix elements still demand a lot of memory and/or storage and it readily exceeds the limitation of the state-of-the-art supercomputers. We explore the possibility of mimicking the effects of three-body forces in medium-mass region, especially lower $pf$ shell, by density-dependent effective nucleon-nucleon interactions combining with a modern family of chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction and an uncertainty quantification on the coupling constants. We found that some effective nucleon-nucleon potentials give decent description of ground state energies, but also systematic underestimation in charge radii and deficiencies relevant to the $pf$-shell region.
I summarize recent results and discuss upcoming and planned experiments that attempt to elucidate how the structure of nucleons might be modified by nuclear binding.
Neutron-rich nuclei become increasingly sensitive to three-nucleon forces. These components of nuclear forces are at the forefront of theoretical developments based on effective field theories of quantum chromodynamics. We discuss our understanding of three-nucleon forces and their impact on exotic nuclei, and show how new measurements test and constrain them. Three-nucleon forces therefore provide an exciting link between theoretical and experimental nuclear physics frontiers.
The present contribution reviews recent advances made toward a microscopic understanding of superfluidity in nuclei using many-body methods based on the BCS ansatz and low-momentum inter-nucleon interactions, themselves based on chiral effective field theory and renormalization group techniques.
Recent studies at Jefferson Lab show that there are a certain proportion of nucleons in nuclei have momenta greater than the so-called nuclear Fermi momentum $p_{F}$. Based on the transport model of nucleus-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies, nucleon high momentum caused by the neutron-proton short-range correlations in nuclei is constrained by comparing with $π$ and photon experimental data and considering some uncertainties. The high momentum cutoff value $p_{max}$ $\leq$ 2$p_{F}$ is obtained.
The study of spherical-deformed ground--state phase transitions in finite nuclei as a function of N and Z is hindered by the discrete values of the nucleon number. A resolution of the integer nucleon number problem, and evidence relating to phase transitions in finite nuclei, are discussed from the experimental point of view and interpreted within the framework of the interacting boson model.
While the main features of atomic nuclei are well described by nuclear mean-field models, there is a large and growing body of evidence which indicates an important additional role played by spatially-correlated nucleon-nucleon structures. The role of nucleonic structures was first suggested by Heidmann in 1950 to explain pick-up reactions of energetic nucleons. Since then a steady flux of new experimental evidence has confirmed the presence of similar structures inside atomic nuclei, dominated by correlations between pairs of nucleons. The role of these internal nucleon-nucleon correlations h…
We propose a phenomenological approach to examine the role of short- and long-range nucleon-nucleon correlations in the quenching of single-particle strength in atomic nuclei and their evolution in asymmetric nuclei and neutron matter. These correlations are thought to be the reason for the quenching of spectroscopic factors observed in $\rm (e,e'p)$, $\rm (p,2p)$ and transfer reactions. We show that the recently observed increase of the high-momentum component of the protons in neutron-rich nuclei is consistent with the reduced proton spectroscopic factors. Our approach connects recent result…
The number of nucleon (NN) scaling of the directed flow $v_1$ and elliptic flow ($v_{2}$) as well as the nuclear modification factor ($R_{cp}$) are tested for light nuclei which are produced in 0.4$A$ GeV $^{197}Au + ^{197}Au$ collisions at different impact parameters with two different in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections in the framework of an isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model. In that energy domain, the emission of light nuclei can be well described by the squeeze-out phenonomenon. The results show a nice NN scaling behavior for flow parameters $v_{1}$, $v_{2}$ a…
For more than half a century, nucleons are considered to move continuously in the nuclei. Recent electron-scattering experiments indicate about 20$\sim$25\% nucleons in heavier nuclei are involved in the neutron-proton short-range correlations. Nucleons in the nuclei thus have abnormal behavior unlike those in the non-interaction fermi gas. In the neutron-rich nuclei, around the Fermi momentum, the neutron-proton short-range correlations lead to a momentum gap in the proton momentum distribution, which is circumstantially supported by the pionic experimental data. Likewise, there should also b…
Nucleon-nucleon momentum correlation function have been presented for nuclear reactions with neutron-rich or proton-rich projectiles using a nuclear transport theory, namely Isospin-Dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics model. The relationship between the binding energy of projectiles and the strength of proton-neutron correlation function at small relative momentum has been explored, while proton-proton correlation function shows its sensitivity to the proton density distribution. Those results show that nucleon-nucleon correlation function is useful to reflect some features of the neutron- or…
The Gamow-Teller strength in nuclei can be strongly affected by the internal degrees of freedom of the nucleon. It is demonstrated that this feature is unique to the Gamow-Teller. Excitation modes that involve spatial degrees of freedom are much less influenced by the internal excitation of nucleons. The fact that the observed Gamow-Teller strength is quenched by 30-40 percent in all nuclei suggests that indeed this is due to the nucleon excitation in nuclei.
We present a theoretical study of the Maris polarization effect and its application in quasi-free reactions to assess information on the structure of exotic nuclei. We discuss the uncertainties in the calculations of triple differential cross sections and of analyzing powers due the choices of various nucleon-nucleon interactions the optical potentials and limitations of the method. Our calculations explore a large number of choices for the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions and the optical potential for nucleon-nucleus scattering. Our study implies that polarization variables in (p,2p) reactio…
It is shown that the use of a density dependent effective Pauli potential together with a nucleon-nucleon interaction potential plays a crucial role to reproduce not only the binding energies but also the matter root mean square radii of medium mass range spin-isospin saturated nuclei. This study is performed with a semiclassical Monte Carlo many-body simulation within the context of a simplified nucleon-nucleon interaction to focus on the effect of the genuine correlations due to the fermionic nature of nucleons. The procedure obtained is rather robust and it does not depend on the detailed f…
The short-range correlation (SRC) induced by the tensor force in the isosinglet neutron-proton interaction channel leads to a high-momentum tail (HMT) in the single-nucleon momentum distributions n(k) in nuclei. Owing to the remaining uncertainties about the tensor force, the shape of the nucleon HMT may be significantly different from the dilute interacting Fermi gas model prediction $n(k) \sim1/k^4$ similar to the HMT in cold atoms near the unitary limit. Within an isospin- and momentum-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model incorporating approximately the nucleon HMT, we inve…
Based on the recent experimental observations of the dominance of tensor interaction in the ~250-600~MeV/c momentum range of nucleons in nuclei, the existence of two new properties for high-momentum distribution of nucleons in asymmetric nuclei is suggested. The first property is the approximate scaling relation between proton and neutron high-momentum distributions weighted by their relative fractions in the nucleus. The second property is the inverse proportionality of the strength of the high-momentum distribution of protons and neutrons to the same relative fractions. Based on these two pr…
We summarise recent progress in theory and experiment towards understanding etaprime meson interactions with nucleons and nuclei. Highlights include the production mechanism of etaprime mesons in proton-proton collisions close to threshold, the etaprime effective mass shift in nuclei and the determination of the etaprime-nucleon scattering length in free space.
Local chiral effective field theory interactions have recently been developed and used in the context of quantum Monte Carlo few- and many-body methods for nuclear physics. In this work, we go over detailed features of local chiral nucleon-nucleon interactions and examine their effect on properties of the deuteron, paying special attention to the perturbativeness of the expansion. We then turn to three-nucleon interactions, focusing on operator ambiguities and their interplay with regulator effects. We then discuss the nuclear Green's function Monte Carlo method, going over both wave-function …
One of the primary goals of nuclear physics is providing a complete description of the structure of atomic nuclei. While mean-field calculations provide detailed information on the nuclear shell structure for a wide range of nuclei, they do not capture the complete structure of nuclei, in particular the impact of small, dense structures in nuclei. The strong, short-range component of the nucleon-nucleon potential yields hard interactions between nucleons which are close together, generating a high-momentum tail to the nucleon momentum distribution, with momenta well in excess of the Fermi mome…
With the development of radioactive beam facilities, studies concerning the shell evolution of unstable nuclei have recently gained prominence. Intruder components, particularly s-wave intrusion, in the low-lying states of light neutron-rich nuclei near N=8 are of importance in the study of shell evolution. The use of single-nucleon transfer reactions in inverse kinematics has been a sensitive tool that can be used to quantitatively investigate the single-particle orbital component of selectively populated states. The spin-parity, spectroscopic factor (or single-particle strength), and effecti…
The Transfer to the Continuum method has been applied to describe the $^{11}\text{Li}(p,pn)$ and $^{14}\text{Be}(p,pn)$ reactions in inverse kinematics, using structure overlaps computed within a full three-body model for the projectile. Calculations agree with the available experimental data on the unbound $^{10}$Li and $^{13}$Be nuclei.
Present and prospective fundamental symmetry tests with nucleons, nuclei and atoms are probing for possible new physics at the TeV scale and beyond. These ongoing and proposed table-top as well as accelerator-based experiments are thus a vital component of the Intensity Frontier. At the same time, these tests provide increasingly sophisticated probes of long-distance strong interactions that are responsible for the structure of nucleons and nuclei. In this community report, some of the most compelling opportunities with nucleons, nuclei and atoms are summarized, drawing largely on input receiv…
Background: Multi-nucleon transfer reactions have recently attracted attention as a possible path to the synthesis of new neutron-rich heavy nuclei. Purpose: We study transfer reactions involving massive nuclei with the intention of understanding if the semi-classical model GRAZING coupled to an evaporation and fission competition model can satisfactory reproduce experimental data on transfer reactions in which fission plays a role. Methods: We have taken the computer code GRAZING and have added fission competition to it (GRAZING-F) using our current understanding of $Γ_n/Γ_f$, fission barrier…
We compute the binding energies, radii, and densities for selected medium-mass nuclei within coupled-cluster theory and employ the "bare" chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction at order N3LO. We find rather well-converged results in model spaces consisting of 15 oscillator shells, and the doubly magic nuclei 40Ca, 48Ca, and the exotic 48Ni are underbound by about 1 MeV per nucleon within the CCSD approximation. The binding-energy difference between the mirror nuclei 48Ca and 48Ni is close to theoretical mass table evaluations. Our computation of the one-body density matrices and the corresponding …
We perform ab initio calculations for nuclei around ^{16}O, ^{40}Ca, and ^{56}Ni using realistic nucleon-nucleon forces. In particular, ^{56}Ni is computed as the heaviest nucleus in this kind of ab initio calculation. Ground-state and single-particle energies including three-body-cluster effects are obtained within the framework of the unitary-model-operator approach. It is shown that the CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential gives quite good results close to the experimental values for all nuclei in the present work.
Starting with a quark model of nucleon structure in which the valence quarks are strongly correlated within a nucleon, the light nuclei are constructed by assuming similar correlations of the quarks of neighboring nucleons. Applying the model to larger collections of nucleons reveals the emergence of the face-centered cubic (FCC) symmetry at the nuclear level. Nuclei with closed shells possess octahedral symmetry. Binding of nucleons are provided by quark loops formed by three and four nucleon correlations. Quark loops are responsible for formation of exotic (borromean) nuclei, as well. The mo…
The importance of the effects of nucleon-nucleon (NN) short-range correlations (SRC) and Gribov inelastic shadowing (IS) on various high energy scattering processes involving nuclear targets is demonstrated within an improved Glauber-Gribov approach.
Using an isospin-dependent transport model, we study the effects of nuclear symmetry energy on two-nucleon correlation functions in heavy ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei. We find that the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy affects significantly the nucleon emission times in these collisions, leading to larger values of two-nucleon correlation functions for a symmetry energy that has a stronger density dependence. Two-nucleon correlation functions are thus useful tools for extracting information about the nuclear symmetry energy from heavy ion collisions.
We present the first study of pairing in nuclei including three-nucleon forces. We perform systematic calculations of the odd-even mass staggering generated using a microscopic pairing interaction at first order in chiral low-momentum interactions. Significant repulsive contributions from the leading chiral three-nucleon forces are found. Two- and three-nucleon interactions combined account for approximately 70% of the experimental pairing gaps, which leaves room for self-energy and induced interaction effects that are expected to be overall attractive in nuclei.
We investigate neutrino-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies incorporating quasielastic scattering and Delta(1232) excitation as elementary processes, together with Fermi motion, Pauli blocking and mean-field potentials in the nuclear medium. A full coupled-channel treatment of final state interactions is achieved with a semiclassical BUU transport model. Results for inclusive reactions and nucleon knockout are presented.
We review the production of high-mass lepton pairs in fixed-target experiments, including both Drell-Yan (DY) and heavy quarkonium (J/Psi and Upsilons) production.
Talk given at the "International Workshop on (e,e'p) Processes", July 2-6, 2017, Bled, Slovenia. Various many-body calculations are compared and the results provided by the Normalization Conserving Linked Cluster Expansion with realistic NN interactions are reviewed and analyzed in detail, as far as ground state energies, momentum distributions and spectral functions of few-nucleon system and complex nuclei are concerned.
This report summarizes our understanding of antikaon-nucleon interactions and reviews the present theoretical situation in the quest for quasibound antikaon-nuclear systems.
We report variational Monte Carlo calculations of single-nucleon momentum distributions for A <= 12 nuclei and nucleon-pair and nucleon-cluster momentum distributions for A <= 8. The wave functions have been generated for a Hamiltonian containing the Argonne v18 two-nucleon and Urbana X three-nucleon potentials. The single-nucleon and nucleon-pair momentum distributions exhibit universal features attributable to the one-pion-exchange tensor interaction. The single-nucleon distributions are broken down into proton and neutron components and spin-up and spin-down components where appropriate. Th…
Relationships between mass intervals for free hadrons and in nuclei are studied in two theoretical approaches inspired by QCD: naive quark model and skyrmion model, taking one example each from mesons and baryons, that of pi-rho splitting in mesons, and nucleon-Delta splitting in baryons. Possible deconfinement effects in nuclei are examined.
The ground-state energy of the doubly magic nuclei 4He and 16O has been calculated within the framework of the Goldstone expansion starting from modern nucleon-nucleon potentials. A low-momentum potential V-low-k has been derived from the bare potential by integrating out its high-momentum components beyond a cutoff Lambda. We have employed a simple criterion to relate this cutoff momentum to a boundary condition for the two-nucleon model space spanned by a harmonic-oscillator basis. Convergence of the results has been obtained with a limited number of oscillator quanta.
We tested several choices of the in-medium value of the Bjorken scaling variable assuming the nucleon structure function in nucleus to be the same as that of free nucleon. The results unambiguously show that it is different.
Inclusive quasi-elastic electron scattering off nuclei is investigated at high momentum transfer (Q^2>1 (GeV/c)^2) and x>1 adopting a consistent treatment of nucleon-nucleon correlations in initial and final states. It is shown that in case of light as well as complex nuclei the inclusive cross section at 1.3<x<2 is dominated by the absorption of the virtual photon on a pair of correlated nucleons and by their elastic rescattering in the continuum, whereas at x>2 it is governed by the rescattering of the outgoing off-mass-shell nucleon in the complex optical potential generated by the ground s…
We have studied the low lying magnetic spectra of 12C, 16O, 40Ca, 48Ca and 208Pb nuclei within the Random Phase Approximation (RPA) theory, finding that the description of low-lying magnetic states of doubly-closed-shell nuclei imposes severe constraints on the spin and tensor terms of the nucleon-nucleon effective interaction. We have first made an investigation by using four phenomenological effective interactions and we have obtained good agreement with the experimental magnetic spectra, and, to a lesser extent, with the electron scattering responses. Then we have made self-consistent RPA c…
The 1S0 pairing gap in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter and finite nuclei is investigated using the chiral nucleon-nucleon potential at the N3LO order in the two-body sector, and the N2LO order in the three-body sector. To include realistic nuclear forces in RHB (Relativistic Hartree Bolgoliubov) calculations we rely on a separable form of the pairing interaction adjusted to the bare nuclear force. The separable pairing force is applied to the analysis of pairing properties for several isotopic and isotonic chains of spherical nuclei.
We solve the ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) in the complete Nmax = 8 basis for A = 7 and A = 8 nuclei with two-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions derived within chiral effective field theory (EFT). We find that including the chiral EFT three-nucleon interaction in the Hamiltonian improves overall good agreement with experimental binding energies, excitation spectra, transitions and electromagnetic moments. We predict states that exhibit sensitivity to including the chiral EFT three-nucleon interaction but are not yet known experimentally.
The Dirac structure of the nucleon self-energy in asymmetric nuclear matter cannot reliably be deduced from the momentum dependence of the single-particle energies. It is demonstrated that such attempts yield an isospin dependence with even a wrong sign. Relativistic studies of finite nuclei have been based on such studies of asymmetric nuclear matter. The effects of these isospin components on the results for finite nuclei are investigated.
Assuming that NN interaction is modified inside a nucleus by a specific way, phenomenological effective broad core (BC) NN potential is constructed. It is shown that increase in the width of repulsive core lets us describe the Coulomb form factors of few-body nuclei on the basis of nucleonic degrees of freedom only.
We study the influence of the nucleon spectral function on eta photo- and electroproduction on nuclei. Besides kinematical effects due to groundstate correlations, also a modification of the S11(1535) decay width is taken into account, which is caused by the possible decay into nucleons with mass smaller than the pole mass in the medium. Hence, resonances with masses below the free N eta threshold can contribute to eta production.
We present a model for the description of nuclear matter and finite nuclei, and at the same time, for the study of medium modifications of nucleon properties. The nucleons are described as nontopological solitons which interact through the self-consistent exchange of scalar and vector mesons. The model explicitly incorporates quark degrees of freedom into nuclear many-body systems and provides satisfactory results on the nuclear properties. The present model predicts a significant increase of the nucleon radius at normal nuclear matter density. It is very interesting to see the nucleon propert…
This presentation reports on recent developments concerning basic aspects of low-energy QCD as they relate to the understanding of the nucleon mass and the nuclear many-body problem.
We calculate the total and differential quasielastic cross sections for neutrino and antineutrino scattering on nucleons using up to date fits to the nucleon elastic electromagnetic form factors $G_E^p$, $G_E^n$, $G_M^p$, $G_M^n$, and $F_A$ and pseudoscalar form factors. We compare predictions of the cross sections for nucelons and nuclei to experimental data.
We consider the spin-isospin-independent central part of the residual nucleon-nucleon potential in finite spherical nuclei taking into account the deformation effects of the nucleons within the surrounding nuclear environment. It is shown that inside the nucleus the short-range repulsive contribution of the potential is increased and the intermediate attraction is decreased. We identify the growth of the radial component of the spin-isospin independent short-range part of the in-medium nucleon-nucleon interaction as the responsible agent that prevents the radial collapse of the nucleus.
We developed a Monte Carlo event generator for production of nucleon configurations in complex nuclei consistently including effects of Nucleon-Nucleon (NN) correlations. Our approach is based on the Metropolis search for configurations satisfying essential constraints imposed by short- and long-range NN correlations, guided by the findings of realistic calculations of one- and two-body densities for medium-heavy nuclei. The produced event generator can be used for Monte Carlo (MC) studies of pA and AA collisions. We perform several tests of consistency of the code and comparison with previous…
The structure of exotic nuclei sheds new light on the linkage of the nuclear structure to the nucleonic interaction. The self-consistent mean-field (SCMF) theories are useful to investigate this linkage, which are applicable to many nuclei covering almost the whole range of the nuclear chart without artificial truncation of model space. For this purpose, it is desired to develop effective interaction for the SCMF calculations well connected to the bare nucleonic interaction. Focusing on ground-state properties, I show results of the SCMF calculations primarily with the M3Y-type semi-realistic …
Coulomb displacement energies, i.e., the differences between the energies of corresponding nuclear states in mirror nuclei, are evaluated using recent models for the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction. These modern NN potentials account for breaking of isospin symmetry and reproduce $pp$ and $pn$ phase shifts accurately. The predictions by these new potentials for the binding of $^{16}O$ are calculated. A particular focus of our study are effects due to nuclear correlations and charge-symmetry breaking (CSB). We find that the CSB terms in the modern NN interactions substantially reduce the discr…
Correlations in the nuclear wave-function beyond the mean-field or Hartree-Fock approximation are very important to describe basic properties of nuclear structure. Attempts are made to explore details of these correlations in exclusive nucleon knock-out by electron scattering experiments. Basic results of $(e,e'p)$ experiments are reviewed. The role of correlations in $(e,e'NN)$ experiments is discussed. Special attention is paid to a consistent description of the competing effects due to final state interaction, meson exchange current and isobar currents. Results are discussed for systematic …
The cross sections for a variety of diffractive processes in proton-nucleus scattering, associated with large gaps in rapidity, are calculated within an improved Glauber-Gribov theory, where the inelastic shadowing corrections are summed to all orders by employing the dipole representation. The effects of nucleon correlations, leading to a modification of the nuclear thickness function, are also taken into account. Numerical calculations are performed for the energies of the HERA-B experiment, and the RHIC and LHC colliders, and for several nuclei. It is found that whereas the Gribov correctio…
The spectroscopic strengths of two-nucleon transfer reactions constitute a stringent test for two-nucleon correlations in the nuclear wave functions. A comparison between the recently measured 198Hg(d,alpha)196Au reaction and the predictions from the nuclear quartet supersymmetry lends further support to the validity of supersymmetry in nuclear physics.
The quantum vacuum in a many-body system of finite nuclei has been investigated within the relativistic Hartree approach which describes the bound states of nucleons and anti-nucleons consistently. The contributions of the Dirac sea to the source terms of the meson-field equations are taken into account up to the one-nucleon loop and one-meson loop. The tensor couplings for the $ω$- and $ρ$-meson are included in the model. After adjusting the parameters of the model to the properties of spherical nuclei, a large effective nucleon mass $m^{*}/M_{N} \approx 0.78$ is obtained. The overall nucleon…
By introducing a density-dependent contact term, M3Y-type interactions applicable to the Hartree-Fock calculations are developed. In order to view basic characters of the interactions, we carry out calculations on the uniform nuclear matter as well as on several doubly magic nuclei. It is shown that a parameter-set called M3Y-P2 describes various properties similarly well to the Skyrme SLy5 and/or the Gogny D1S interactions. A remarkable difference from the SLy5 and the D1S interactions is found in the spin-isospin properties in the nuclear matter, to which the one-pion-exchange potential give…
The properties of strange and charm mesons in nuclear matter and nuclei are reviewed. Different frameworks are presented and discussed paying a special attention to unitarized coupled-channel approaches. Possible experimental signatures of the in-medium properties of these mesons are also addressed, in particular in connection with the future FAIR facility at GSI.
Conflicting coupling of unpaired nucleons in the odd-odd nuclei is discussed. A very simple explanation is suggested for the damping of the energy spacing of the lowest levels in the rotational bands in the odd-odd nuclei in the case of a "conflicting" coupling of the odd proton and neutron comparative to those of the bands based on the state of the strongly-coupled particle in the neighbouring odd nuclei entering the "conflicting" configuration.
On the basis of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock method with the nucleon-nucleon forces obtained from lattice QCD simulations, the properties of the medium-heavy doubly-magic nuclei such as 16^O and 40^Ca are investigated. We found that those nuclei are bound for the pseudo-scalar meson mass M_PS ~ 470 MeV. The mass number dependence of the binding energies, single-particle spectra and density distributions are qualitatively consistent with those expected from empirical data at the physical point, although these hypothetical nuclei at heavy quark mass have smaller binding energies than the real nucl…
