Recent lattice results strongly support the Axionic String Ansatz (ASA) for quantum numbers of glueballs in 3D Yang-Mills theory. The ASA treats glueballs as closed bosonic strings. The corresponding worldsheet theory is a deformation of the minimal Nambu-Goto theory. In order to understand better the ASA strings and as a first step towards a perturbative calculation of the glueball mass splittings we compare the ASA spectrum to the closed effective string theory. Namely, we model glueballs as excitations around the folded rotating rod solution with a large angular momentum $J$. The resulting spectrum agrees with the ASA in the regime of validity of the effective theory, i.e., in the vicinity of the leading Regge trajectory. In particular, closed effective string theory correctly predicts that only glueballs of even spin $J$ show up at the leading Regge trajectory. Interestingly though, the closed effective string theory overestimates the number of glueball states far above the leading Regge trajectory.
Relying on an effective-string approach in which glueballs --- bound states of pure Yang-Mills theory --- are modelled by closed strings, we give arguments suggesting that anyonic glueballs, \textit{i.e.} glueballs with arbitrary spin, may exist in $(2+1)$-$\,$dimensional Yang-Mills theory. We then focus on the large$\,$-$N_c$ limit of $SU$($N_c$) Yang-Mills theory and show that our model leads to a mass spectrum in good agreement with lattice data in the scalar sector, while it predicts the masses and spins of anyonic glueball states.
We determine spins of more than 100 low lying glueball states in $D=2+1$ dimensional $SU(4)$ gluodynamics by a lattice calculation. We go up to $J=8$ in the spin value. We compare the resulting spectrum with predictions of the Axionic String Ansatz (ASA). We find a perfect match for 39 lightest states, corresponding to the first four string levels. In particular, this resolves tensions between the ASA predictions and earlier spin determinations. The observed spins of heavier glueballs are also in a good agreement with the ASA. We did not identify any sharp tension between lattice data and the …
We present variational estimates for the low-lying energies of a simple matrix model that approximates $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills theory on a three-sphere of radius $R$. By fixing the ground state energy, we obtain the (integrated) renormalization group (RG) equation for the Yang-Mills coupling $g$ as a function of $R$. This RG equation allows to estimate the masses of other glueball states, which we find to be in excellent agreement with lattice simulations.
We conjecture that in Yang-Mills theories the ratio between the ground-state glueball mass squared and the string tension is proportional to the ratio of the eigenvalues of quadratic Casimir operators in the adjoint and the fundamental representations. The proportionality constant depends on the dimension of the space-time only, and is henceforth universal. We argue that this universality, which is supported by available lattice results, is a direct consequence of area-law confinement. In order to explain this universal behaviour, we provide three analytical arguments, based respectively on a …
We put forward the Axionic String Ansatz (ASA), which provides a unified description for the worldsheet dynamics of confining strings in pure Yang--Mills theory both in $D=3$ and $D=4$ space-time dimensions. The ASA is motivated by the excitation spectrum of long confining strings, as measured on a lattice, and by recently constructed integrable axionic non-critical string models. According to the ASA, pure gluodynamics in 3D is described by a non-critical bosonic string theory without any extra local worldsheet degrees of freedom. We argue that this assumption fixes the set of quantum numbers…
We report the masses of the lightest spin-0 and spin-2 glueballs obtained in an extensive lattice study of the continuum and infinite volume limits of $Sp(N_c)$ gauge theories for $N_c=2,4,6,8$. We also extrapolate the combined results towards the large-$N_c$ limit. We compute the ratio of scalar and tensor masses, and observe evidence that this ratio is independent of $N_{c}$. Other lattice studies of Yang-Mills theories at the same space-time dimension provide a compatible ratio. We further compare these results to various analytical ones and discuss them in view of symmetry-based arguments …
We calculate the scattering cross section between two $0^{++}$ glueballs in $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills theory on lattice at $β= 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4$, and 2.5 using the indirect (HAL QCD) method. We employ the cluster-decomposition error reduction technique and use all space-time symmetries to improve the signal. In the use of the HAL QCD method, the centrifugal force was subtracted to remove the systematic effect due to nonzero angular momenta of lattice discretization. From the extracted interglueball potential we determine the low energy glueball effective theory by matching with the one-glueball exc…
Standard local updating algorithms experience a critical slowing down close to the continuum limit, which is particularly severe for topological observables. In practice, the Markov chain tends to remain trapped in a fixed topological sector. This problem further worsens at large $N$, and is known as $\mathit{topological}~\mathit{freezing}$. To mitigate it, we adopt the parallel tempering on boundary conditions proposed by M. Hasenbusch. This algorithm allows to obtain a reduction of the auto-correlation time of the topological charge up to several orders of magnitude. With this strategy we ar…

A study of the lightest glueball states in SU(2) Euclidean Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge
Phys. Rev. It is shown that the formulation of the SU(3) Yang-Mills quantum Hamiltonian in the "flux-tube gauge" $A_{a1}=0$ for all a=1,2,4,5,6,7 and $A_{a2}=0$ for all a=5,7 allows for a systematic and practical strong coupling expansion of the Hamiltonian in $λ\equiv g^{-2/3}$, equivalent to an expansion in the number of spatial derivatives. Introducing an infinite spatial lattice with box length a, the "free part" is the sum of Hamiltonians of Yang-Mills quantum mechanics of constant fields for each box, and the "interaction terms" contain higher and higher number of spatial derivatives connecting dif…
Motivated in part by the pseudo-Nambu Goldstone Boson mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking in Composite Higgs Models, in part by dark matter scenarios with strongly coupled origin, as well as by general theoretical considerations related to the large-N extrapolation, we perform lattice studies of the Yang-Mills theories with $Sp(2N)$ gauge groups. We measure the string tension and the mass spectrum of glueballs, extracted from appropriate 2-point correlation functions of operators organised as irreducible representations of the octahedral symmetry group. We perform the continuum extrapol…
We study cosmological constraints on dark pure Yang-Mills sectors. Dark glueballs are overproduced for large regions of ultraviolet parameter space. The problem may be alleviated in two ways: via a large preferential reheating into the visible sector, motivating certain inflation or modulus decay models, or via decays into axions or moduli, which are strongly constrained by nucleosynthesis and $ΔN_{\text{eff}}$ bounds. String models frequently have multiple hidden Yang-Mills sectors, which are subject to even stronger constraints due to the existence of multiple dark glueballs.
The holographic formalism is applied to the calculation of the effective potential for the scalar glueball operator. Three different versions of this operator are defined, and for each we compute the associated effective potential and discuss its properties and scheme ambiguities. Contact is made to earlier attempts to guess this effective potential from the conformal anomaly. We apply our results to the Improved Holographic QCD model calculating the glueball condensate.
Supersymmetry provides a well-established theoretical framework for extensions of the standard model of particle physics and the general understanding of quantum field theories. We summarise here our investigations of N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU(2) gauge symmetry using the non-perturbative first-principles method of numerical lattice simulations. The strong interactions of gluons and their superpartners, the gluinos, lead to confinement, and a spectrum of bound states including glueballs, mesons, and gluino-glueballs emerges at low energies. For unbroken supersymmetry these pa…
Non-perturbative aspects of the physics of $Sp(2N)$ gauge theories are interesting for phenomenological and theoretical reasons, and little studied so far, particularly in the approach to the large-$N$ limit. We examine the spectrum of glueballs and the string tension of Yang-Mills theories based upon these groups. Glueball masses are calculated numerically with a variational method from Monte-Carlo generated lattice gauge configurations. After taking continuum limits for $N$ = 1, 2, 3 and 4, we extrapolate the results towards large $N$. We compare the resulting spectrum with that of $SU(N)$ g…
In this paper we study, by means of numerical simulations, the behaviour of the scalar glueball mass and the ground state of the torelon for trace deformed Yang-Mills theory defined on $ \mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$, in which center symmetry is recovered even at small compactification radii. We find, by investigating both $SU(3)$ and $SU(4)$ pure gauge theories, that the glueball mass computed in the deformed theory, when center symmetry is recovered, is compatible with its value at zero temperature and does not show any significant dependence on the compactification radius; moreover, we establish …
We study $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) on the lattice. The non-perturbative nature of supersymmetric field theories is still largely unknown. Similarly to QCD, SYM is confining and contains strongly bound states. Applying the variational method together with different smearing techniques we extract masses of the lightest bound states such as gluino-glue, glueball and mesonic states. As these states should form supermultiplets, this study allows to check whether SYM remains supersymmetric also on the quantum level.
We study Yang Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions, as an array of coupled (1+1)-dimensional principal chiral sigma models. This can be understood as an anisotropic limit where one of the space-time dimensions is discrete and the others are continuous. The $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ principal chiral sigma model in 1+1 dimensions is integrable, asymptotically free and has massive excitations. New exact form factors and correlation functions of the sigma model have recently been found by the author and P. Orland. In this paper, we use these new results to calculate physical quantities in (2+1)-dimensional Ya…
We calculate for the first time the scattering cross section between lightest glueballs in $SU(2)$ pure Yang-Mills theory, which are good candidates of dark matter. In the first step, we evaluate the interglueball potential on lattice using the HAL QCD method, with several lattice spacings ($β= 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4$, and 2.5). The systematics associated with nonzero angular momentum effect is removed by subtracting the centrifugal force. The statistical accuracy is improved by employing the cluster-decomposition error reduction technique and by using all space-time symmetries. We then determine …
The AdS/CFT correspondence has provided new and useful insights into the nonperturbative regime of strongly coupled gauge theories. We construct a class of models meant to mimic Yang-Mills theory using the superpotential method. This method allows us to efficiently address the problem of solving all the equations of motion. The conformal symmetry is broken in the infrared by a dilaton field. Using a five-dimensional action we calculate the mass spectrum of scalar glueballs. This spectrum contains a tachyon, indicating an instability in the theory. We stabilize the theory by introducing a cosmo…
Morse-Smale-Floer homology associates the critical points of the action functional of a classical field theory over a manifold to its homology. We associate to the intersection homology of certain Lagrangian submanifolds of R^4 the critical points of a quantum effective action of large-N SU(N) YM. For this purpose we construct in YM a trivial Topological Field Theory defined by twistor Wilson loops whose v.e.v. is 1 in the large-N limit for any shape of the loops supported on certain punctured Lagrangian submanifolds. We derive a new holomorphic loop equation for the twistor Wilson loops, that…
