We present RePOSE, a fast iterative refinement method for 6D object pose estimation. Prior methods perform refinement by feeding zoomed-in input and rendered RGB images into a CNN and directly regressing an update of a refined pose. Their runtime is slow due to the computational cost of CNN, which is especially prominent in multiple-object pose refinement. To overcome this problem, RePOSE leverages image rendering for fast feature extraction using a 3D model with a learnable texture. We call this deep texture rendering, which uses a shallow multi-layer perceptron to directly regress a view-invariant image representation of an object. Furthermore, we utilize differentiable Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) optimization to refine a pose fast and accurately by minimizing the feature-metric error between the input and rendered image representations without the need of zooming in. These image representations are trained such that differentiable LM optimization converges within few iterations. Consequently, RePOSE runs at 92 FPS and achieves state-of-the-art accuracy of 51.6% on the Occlusion LineMOD dataset - a 4.1% absolute improvement over the prior art, and comparable result on the YCB-Video dataset with a much faster runtime. The code is available at https://github.com/sh8/repose.

Recent work has demonstrated that volumetric scene representations combined with differentiable volume rendering can enable photo-realistic rendering for challenging scenes that mesh reconstruction fails on. However, these methods entangle geometry and appearance in a "black-box" volume that cannot be edited. Instead, we present an approach that explicitly disentangles geometry--represented as a continuous 3D volume--from appearance--represented as a continuous 2D texture map. We achieve this by introducing a 3D-to-2D texture mapping (or surface parameterization) network into volumetric repres…

We present a new pipeline for acquiring a textured mesh in the wild with a single smartphone which offers access to images, depth maps, and valid poses. Our method first introduces an RGBD-aided structure from motion, which can yield filtered depth maps and refines camera poses guided by corresponding depth. Then, we adopt the neural implicit surface reconstruction method, which allows for high-quality mesh and develops a new training process for applying a regularization provided by classical multi-view stereo methods. Moreover, we apply a differentiable rendering to fine-tune incomplete text…

Novel photo-realistic texture synthesis is an important task for generating novel scenes, including asset generation for 3D simulations. However, to date, these methods predominantly generate textured objects in 2D space. If we rely on 2D object generation, then we need to make a computationally expensive forward pass each time we change the camera viewpoint or lighting. Recent work that can generate textures in 3D requires 3D component segmentation that is expensive to acquire. In this work, we present a novel conditional generative architecture that we call a graph generative adversarial net…

Human re-rendering from a single image is a starkly under-constrained problem, and state-of-the-art algorithms often exhibit undesired artefacts, such as over-smoothing, unrealistic distortions of the body parts and garments, or implausible changes of the texture. To address these challenges, we propose a new method for neural re-rendering of a human under a novel user-defined pose and viewpoint, given one input image. Our algorithm represents body pose and shape as a parametric mesh which can be reconstructed from a single image and easily reposed. Instead of a colour-based UV texture map, ou…

This paper proposes a new end-to-end neural rendering architecture to transfer appearance and reenact human actors. Our method leverages a carefully designed graph convolutional network (GCN) to model the human body manifold structure, jointly with differentiable rendering, to synthesize new videos of people in different contexts from where they were initially recorded. Unlike recent appearance transferring methods, our approach can reconstruct a fully controllable 3D texture-mapped model of a person, while taking into account the manifold structure from body shape and texture appearance in th…
Due to inevitable noises introduced during scanning and quantization, 3D reconstruction via RGB-D sensors suffers from errors both in geometry and texture, leading to artifacts such as camera drifting, mesh distortion, texture ghosting, and blurriness. Given an imperfect reconstructed 3D model, most previous methods have focused on the refinement of either geometry, texture, or camera pose. Or different optimization schemes and objectives for optimizing each component have been used in previous joint optimization methods, forming a complicated system. In this paper, we propose a novel optimiza…

We propose Differentiable Stereopsis, a multi-view stereo approach that reconstructs shape and texture from few input views and noisy cameras. We pair traditional stereopsis and modern differentiable rendering to build an end-to-end model which predicts textured 3D meshes of objects with varying topologies and shape. We frame stereopsis as an optimization problem and simultaneously update shape and cameras via simple gradient descent. We run an extensive quantitative analysis and compare to traditional multi-view stereo techniques and state-of-the-art learning based methods. We show compelling…

We present EgoRenderer, a system for rendering full-body neural avatars of a person captured by a wearable, egocentric fisheye camera that is mounted on a cap or a VR headset. Our system renders photorealistic novel views of the actor and her motion from arbitrary virtual camera locations. Rendering full-body avatars from such egocentric images come with unique challenges due to the top-down view and large distortions. We tackle these challenges by decomposing the rendering process into several steps, including texture synthesis, pose construction, and neural image translation. For texture syn…

The modern computer graphics pipeline can synthesize images at remarkable visual quality; however, it requires well-defined, high-quality 3D content as input. In this work, we explore the use of imperfect 3D content, for instance, obtained from photo-metric reconstructions with noisy and incomplete surface geometry, while still aiming to produce photo-realistic (re-)renderings. To address this challenging problem, we introduce Deferred Neural Rendering, a new paradigm for image synthesis that combines the traditional graphics pipeline with learnable components. Specifically, we propose Neural …

Neural volume rendering enables photo-realistic renderings of a human performer in free-view, a critical task in immersive VR/AR applications. But the practice is severely limited by high computational costs in the rendering process. To solve this problem, we propose the UV Volumes, a new approach that can render an editable free-view video of a human performer in real-time. It separates the high-frequency (i.e., non-smooth) human appearance from the 3D volume, and encodes them into 2D neural texture stacks (NTS). The smooth UV volumes allow much smaller and shallower neural networks to obtain…

Synthesizing realistic videos of humans using neural networks has been a popular alternative to the conventional graphics-based rendering pipeline due to its high efficiency. Existing works typically formulate this as an image-to-image translation problem in 2D screen space, which leads to artifacts such as over-smoothing, missing body parts, and temporal instability of fine-scale detail, such as pose-dependent wrinkles in the clothing. In this paper, we propose a novel human video synthesis method that approaches these limiting factors by explicitly disentangling the learning of time-coherent…

We present a neural rendering framework that maps a voxelized scene into a high quality image. Highly-textured objects and scene element interactions are realistically rendered by our method, despite having a rough representation as an input. Moreover, our approach allows controllable rendering: geometric and appearance modifications in the input are accurately propagated to the output. The user can move, rotate and scale an object, change its appearance and texture or modify the position of the light and all these edits are represented in the final rendering. We demonstrate the effectiveness …
Gatys et al. (2015) showed that pair-wise products of features in a convolutional network are a very effective representation of image textures. We propose a simple modification to that representation which makes it possible to incorporate long-range structure into image generation, and to render images that satisfy various symmetry constraints. We show how this can greatly improve rendering of regular textures and of images that contain other kinds of symmetric structure. We also present applications to inpainting and season transfer.

It consists of 3D mesh and HDR textures, and efficiently models direct and infinite-bounce indirect lighting of the entire large scene. Based on TBL, we further propose a hybrid lighting representation with precomputed irradiance, …

Depth image based rendering techniques for multiview applications have been recently introduced for efficient view generation at arbitrary camera positions. Encoding rate control has thus to consider both texture and depth data. Due to different structures of depth and texture images and their different roles on the rendered views, distributing the available bit budget between them however requires a careful analysis. Information loss due to texture coding affects the value of pixels in synthesized views while errors in depth information lead to shift in objects or unexpected patterns at their…

Unfortunately, these approaches are currently restricted to voxel- and mesh-based representations, suffering from discretization or low resolution. In this work, we propose a differentiable rendering formulation for implicit shape and texture representations. Implicit representations have recently gained …
