We consider a magnetic skyrmion crystal formed at the surface of a topological insulator. Incorporating the exchange interaction between the helical Dirac surface states and the periodic Néel or Bloch skyrmion texture, we obtain the resulting electronic band structure and discuss the constraints that symmetries impose on the energies and Berry curvature. We find substantive qualitative differences between the Néel and Bloch cases, with the latter generically permitting a multiband low energy tight-binding representation whose parameters are tightly constrained by symmetries. We explicitly compute the associated Wannier orbitals, which resemble the ringlike chiral bound states of helical Dirac fermions coupled to a single skyrmion in a ferromagnetic background. We construct a two-band tight-binding model with real nearest-neighbor hoppings which captures the salient topological features of the low-energy bands. Our results are relevant to magnetic topological insulators (TIs), as well as to TI-magnetic thin film heterostructures, in which skyrmion crystals may be stabilized.
Skyrmion nucleation induced by spin-transfer torques at an interface of a topological insulator and a ferromagnetic insulator is investigated. Due to strong spin-orbit coupling on a surface of topological insulators, which enhances the effect of spin torques, efficient manipulation of skyrmions is expected, and therefore, topological insulators could provide the ideal platform to achieve high-performance skyrmionic devices. Using micromagnetic simulations and energetics, we evaluate properties of the skyrmion nucleation on a surface of topological insulators, such as nucleation time, critical …
Electron spin-momentum locking together with background magnetic textures can significantly alter the electron transport properties. We theoretically investigate the electron transport at the interface between a topological insulator and a magnetic insulator with magnetic skyrmions on the top. In contrast to the conventional topological Hall effect in normal metals, the skyrmions yield an additional contribution to the anomalous Hall conductivity even in the absence of in-plane magnetic texture, arising from the phase factor characteristic to Dirac electrons acquired at skyrmion boundary.
The interaction between the surface of a 3D topological insulator and a skyrmion / anti-skyrmion structure is studied in order to investigate the possibility of electron confinement due to skyrmion presence. Both hedgehog (Néel) and vortex (Bloch) skyrmions are considered. For the hedgehog skyrmion the in-plane components cannot be disregarded and their interaction with the surface state of the TI has to be taken into account. A semi-classical description of the skyrmion chiral angle is obtained using the variational principle. It is shown that both the hedgehog and the vortex skyrmion can ind…
Skyrmions dynamics in the approximation of point-particle skyrmions is considered in the multiferroic insulators, where the spiral magnetic structure is accompanied by finite electric dipole moment. The skyrmion motion is studied in the gradients of perpendicular magnetic and electric fields. The nonuniform magnetic field with a fixed gradient magnitude leads to the spiral motion, where skyrmion circulates in the plane perpendicular to the direction of magnetic field. The frequency of circulation is fixed by the derivative of the external magnetic field and the magnitude of the dipole moment. …
Magnetic skyrmions are compact chiral spin textures that exhibit a rich variety of topological phenomena and hold potential for developing high-density memory devices and novel computing schemes driven by spin currents. Here, we demonstrate room temperature interfacial stabilization and current-driven control of skyrmion bubbles in the ferrimagnetic insulator Tm3Fe5O12 (TmIG) coupled to Pt. We track the current-induced motion of individual skyrmion bubbles. The ferrimagnetic order of the crystal together with the interplay of spin-orbit torques and pinning determine the skyrmion dynamics in Tm…
The quantum anomalous Hall effect has been theoretically predicted and experimentally verified in magnetic topological insulators. In addition, the surface states of these materials exhibit a hedgehog-like "spin" texture in momentum space. Here, we apply the previously formulated low-energy model for Bi$_2$Se$_3$, a parent compound for magnetic topological insulators, to a slab geometry in which an exchange field acts only within one of the surface layers. In this sample set up, the hedgehog transforms into a skyrmion texture beyond a critical exchange field. This critical field marks a transi…
Skyrmions are important in topological quantum field theory for being soliton solutions of a nonlinear sigma model and in information technology for their attractive applications. Skyrmions are believed to be circular and stripy spin textures appeared in the vicinity of skyrmion crystals are termed spiral, helical, and cycloid spin orders, but not skyrmions. Here we present convincing evidences showing that those stripy spin textures are skyrmions, "siblings" of circular skyrmions in skyrmion crystals and "cousins" of isolated circular skyrmions. Specifically, isolated skyrmions are excitation…
In the Kerr rotation geometry, magneto optic memory devices typically suffer from low figure-of-merit (FOM) and long write times. We show that skyrmions formed at the interface of a thin-film multiferroic and a topological insulator can give rise to high FOM magneto optic Kerr effects (MOKEs). Huge differential MOKE can arise in parts of the phase diagram. Resonance like features in the MOKE spectra arising from the induced low energy TI bandgap, the multiferroic-film thickness, and the high energy Drude like behavior are resolved and explained. The Fermi level dependence of the MOKE signature…
Magnetic skyrmion crystals are topological magnetic textures arising in the chiral ferromagnetic materials with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The magnetostatic fields generated by magnetic skyrmion crystals are first studied by micromagnetic simulations. For Néel-type skyrmion crystals, the fields will vanish on one side of the crystal plane, which depend on the helicity; while for Bloch-type skyrmion crystals, the fields will distribute over both sides, and are identical for the two helicities. These features and the symmetry relations of the magetostatic fields are understood from the m…
The anomalous Hall effect is caused by magnetic textures such as skyrmions. We derive an analytical formula of the Hall conductivity on the surface of a topological insulator up to third order in magnetization, $\boldsymbol{M}(\boldsymbol{x})$, based on a perturbative approach. We identify the magnetic textures that contribute to the Hall conductivity up to third order in magnetization and second order in spatial differentiation. We treat magnetization as a perturbation to calculate the Hall conductivity for each magnetic texture based on the linear response theory. Furthermore, we estimate th…
The instability toward a magnetic skyrmion crystal in centrosymmetric trilayer magnets is investigated based on a spin model with layer-dependent Dzayloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We find various types of skyrmion crystal phases with different skyrmion numbers in a low-temperature phase diagram by performing the simulated annealing. In addition to the Néel skyrmion crystal phase that is expected to emerge in the presence of the polar-type Dzayloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we obtain the skyrmion crystal phases characteristics of the layered system: the twisted surface skyrmion crystal, anti-s…
We report our theoretical results on the emergence of rectangular- and square-shaped magnetic skyrmion crystals on a centrosymmetric square lattice with magnetic anisotropy. By performing the simulated annealing for a frustrated spin model with an easy-axis single-ion anisotropy on a square lattice, we find that a competition of the interactions in momentum space gives rise to the formation of two skyrmion crystals, where the skyrmion cores are aligned in a rectangle- or square-lattice way. Especially, the interactions at the higher harmonic wave vectors play an important role in stabilizing t…
We investigate the formation and stability of the skyrmion crystal phase in antiferromagnetic thin films subjected to fieldlike torques such as, e.g., those induced by an electric current in CuMnAs and Mn$_{2}$Au via the inverse spin-galvanic effect. We show that the skyrmion lattice represents the ground state of the antiferromagnet in a substantial area of the phase diagram, parametrized by the staggered field and the (effective) uniaxial anisotropy constant. Skyrmion motion can be driven in the crystal phase by the spin transfer effect. In the metallic scenario, itinerant electrons experien…
Here we report the investigation of the anomalous Hall effect in the magnetically doped topological insulator (V,Bi,Sb)2Te3. We find it contains two contributions of opposite sign. Both components are found to depend differently on carrier density, leading to a sign inversion of the total anomalous Hall effect as a function of applied gate voltage. The two contributions are found to have different magnetization reversal fields, which in combination with a temperature dependent study points towards the coexistence of two ferromagnetic orders in the system. Moreover, we find that the sign of tot…
We show that skyrmions on the surface of a magnetic topological insulator may experience an attractive interaction that leads to the formation of a skyrmion-skyrmion bound state. This is in contrast to the case of skyrmions in a conventional chiral ferromagnet, for which the intrinsic interaction is repulsive. The origin of skyrmion binding in our model is the molecular hybridization of topologically protected electronic orbitals associated with each skyrmion. Attraction between the skyrmions can therefore be controlled by tuning a chemical potential that populates/depopulates the lowest-energ…
We numerically examine thermal effects on the skyrmion Hall angle for driven skyrmions interacting with quenched disorder. We identify a creep regime in which motion occurs via intermittent jumps between pinned and flowing states. Here the skyrmion Hall angle is zero since the skyrmions have time to relax into equilibrium positions in the pinning sites, eliminating the side-jump motion induced by the Magnus force. At higher drives we find a crossover to a viscous flow regime where the skyrmion Hall angle is finite and increases with increasing drive or temperature. Our results are in agreement…
Antiferromagnetic skyrmion crystals are magnetic phases predicted to exist in antiferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Their spatially periodic noncollinear magnetic texture gives rise to topological bulk magnon bands characterized by nonzero Chern numbers. We find topologically-protected chiral magnonic edge states over a wide range of magnetic fields and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction values. Moreover, and of particular importance for experimental realizations, edge states appear at the lowest possible energies, namely, within the first bulk magnon gap. Thus, antiferromag…
We investigate an instability toward a square-lattice formation of magnetic skyrmions in centrosymmetric layered systems. By focusing on a bilayer square-lattice structure with the inversion center at the interlayer bond instead of the atomic site, we numerically examine the stability of the square skyrmion crystal based on an effective spin model with the momentum-resolved interaction in the ground state through the simulated annealing. As a result, we find that a layer-dependent staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction built in the lattice structure becomes the origin of the square skyrmi…
Theory of skyrmion states in liquid crystals: axisymmetric cholesteric bubbles (spherulites)
Recent advances in the physics of current-driven antiferromagnetic skyrmions have observed the absence of a Magnus force. We outline the symmetry reasons for this phenomenon, and show that this cancellation will fail in the case of spin polarized currents. Pairing micromagnetic simulations with semiclassical spin wave transport theory, we demonstrate that skyrmions produce a spin-polarized transverse magnon current, and that spin-polarized magnon currents can in turn produce transverse motion of antiferromagnetic skyrmions. We examine qualitative differences in the frequency dependence of the …
A magnetic bimeron is a pair of two merons and can be understood as the in-plane magnetized version of a skyrmion. Here we theoretically predict the existence of single magnetic bimerons as well as bimeron crystals, and compare the emergent electrodynamics of bimerons with their skyrmion analogues. We show that bimeron crystals can be stabilized in frustrated magnets and analyze what crystal structure can stabilize bimerons or bimeron crystals via the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We point out that bimeron crystals, in contrast to skyrmion crystals, allow for the detection of a pure topol…
The presence of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) may lead to the appearance of Néel skyrmions in ferromagnetic films. These topologically protected structures, whose diameter is as small as a few nanometers, can be nowadays stabilized at room temperature and have been proposed for the realization of artificial magnonic crystals and new spintronic devices, such as racetrack memories. In this perspective, it is of utmost importance to analyze their dynamical properties in the GHz range, i.e. in the operation range of current communication devices. Here we exploited the softwar…
We theoretically investigate the microwave-active resonance modes of a skyrmion crystal on a thin-plate specimen under application of an external magnetic field that is inclined from the perpendicular direction to the skyrmion plane. In addition to the well-known breathing mode and two rotation modes, we find novel resonance modes that can be regarded as combinations of the breathing and rotation modes. Motivated by the previous theoretical work of Wang $et$ $al.$ [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 92}, 020403(R) (2015).], which demonstrated skyrmion propagation driven by breathing-mode excitation under an in…
Skyrmions with the topological number $Q$ equal an integer larger than 1 are called high-topological-number skyrmions or high-$Q$ skyrmions. In this work, we theoretically study the topological Hall effect in square-lattice high-$Q$ skyrmion crystals (SkX) with $Q=2$ and $Q=3$. As a result of the emergent magnetic field, Landau-level-like electronic band structure gives rise to quantized Hall conductivity when the Fermi energy is within the gaps between adjacent single band or multiple bands intertwined. We found that different from conventional ($Q=1$) SkX the Hall quantization number increas…
Theory of interference-induced quantum corrections to conductivity is developed for two dimensional systems with chiral spin textures including skyrmions. The effect of exchange interaction between electrons and spin textures on weak localization of electronic waves is studied. The spin dephasing rates are calculated as functions of the spin texture size. The anomalous magnetoresistance is shown to be governed by the size and magnetization spatial distribution of the spin textures. The effect of average magnetization-induced spin splitting on weak localization is analyzed. The sign-alternating…
We investigate the quantum depinning of a weakly driven skyrmion out of an impurity potential in a mesoscopic magnetic insulator. For small barrier height, the Magnus force dynamics dominates over the inertial one, and the problem is reduced to a massless charged particle in a strong magnetic field. The universal form of the WKB exponent, the rate of tunneling, and the crossover temperature between thermal and quantum tunneling is provided, independently of the detailed form of the pinning potential. The results are discussed in terms of macroscopic parameters of the insulator Cu2OSeO3 and var…
A fundamental fact in solids is that the frequencies of elastic waves vanish as the wave number approaches zero\cite{6}. Here we theoretically show that this fact is overturned when studying the lattice vibration of skyrmion crystals (SkX), i.e., periodic alignment of topologically nontrivial spin solitons called magnetic skyrmions. As emergent crystals, SkX possess collective excitations called "emergent phonons", which describe dynamics of SkX caused by lattice vibration (resembling acoustical branches of ordinary phonons) and in-lattice vibration (resembling optical branches of ordinary pho…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected spin-whirl quasiparticles currently considered as promising components for ultra-dense memory devices. In the bulk they form lattices that are stable over just a few Kelvin below the ordering temperature. This narrow stability range presents a key challenge for applications, and finding ways to tune the SkL stability over a wider phase space is a pressing issue. Here we show experimentally that the skyrmion phase in the magnetoelectric insulator ${\text{Cu}_2 \text{O} \text{Se} \text{O}_3}$ can either expand or shrink substantially depending on th…
We study inter-skyrmion interactions and stable spin configurations in a 2D chiral magnet with in-plane anisotropies of a tilted magnetic field and the magneto-crystalline anisotropy on a (011) thin film. We find that in both cases a small deformation of a skyrmion shape makes the inter-skyrmion interaction anisotropic, and that the skyrmions are weakly bounded along a certain direction due to an emergent attractive interaction. Furthermore, when the magneto-crystalline anisotropy is comparable to the Zeeman energy, skyrmions embedded in a uniform magnetization are tightly bound by creating a …
Based on atomistic spin dynamics simulations, we report the ultrafast generation of single antiferromagnetic (AFM) skyrmions in a confined geometry. This process is achieved through an effective magnetic field induced by the athermal inverse Faraday effect from a short laser pulse. The resulting field can nucleate an isolated skyrmion as a topologically protected metastable state in a collinear antiferromagnet with small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The radius of a single skyrmion is shown to increase by applying a uniform dc magnetic field and at increasing temperature. To investigate p…
We theoretically show that a temporally oscillating spin-driven electromotive force or voltage with a large DC component can be generated by exciting microwave-active spin-wave modes of a skyrmion crystal confined in a quasi two-dimensional magnet under a tilted magnetic field. The DC component and the AC amplitude of the oscillating electric voltage is significantly enhanced when the microwave frequency is tuned to an eigenfrequency of the peculiar spin-wave modes of the skyrmion crystal called ``rotation modes" and ``breathing mode", whereas the sign of the DC component depends on the microw…
A magnetic skyrmion induced on a ferromagnetic topological insulator (TI) is a real-space manifestation of the chiral spin texture in the momentum space, and can be a carrier for information processing by manipulating it in tailored structures. Here, we fabricate a sandwich structure containing two layers of a self-assembled ferromagnetic septuple-layer TI, Mn(Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$)$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ (MnBST), separated by quintuple layers of TI, (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$)$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ (BST), and observe skyrmions through the topological Hall effect in an intrinsic magnetic topological insulator for the fi…
A generic theory about skyrmion crystal (SkX) formation in chiral magnetic thin films and its fascinating thermodynamic behaviours is presented. A chiral magnetic film can have many metastable states with an arbitrary skyrmion density up to a maximal value when a parameter $κ$, which measures the relative Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) strength, is large enough. The lowest energy state of an infinite film is a long zig-zagged ramified stripe skyrmion occupied the whole film in the absence of a magnetic field. Under an intermediate field perpendicular to the film, the lowest energy sta…
Emergent crystals are periodic alignment of "emergent particles", i.e., localized collective behavior of atoms or their charges/spins/orbits. These novel states of matter, widely observed in various systems, may deform under mechanical forces with elasticity strikingly different from that of the underlying material. However, their nonlinear and critical behaviors under strong fields are hitherto unclear. Here we theoretically study the nonlinear elasticity and structural transitions of skyrmion crystals (SkX) suffering uniaxial distortion by using three different methods. Under moderate tensio…
We theoretically study the dynamics of skyrmion crystals in electrically-insulating chiral magnets subjected to current-induced spin torques by adjacent metallic layers. We develop an elasticity theory that accounts for the gyrotropic force engendered by the non-trivial topology of the spin texture, tensions at the boundaries due to the exchange of linear and spin angular momentum with the metallic reservoirs, and dissipation in the bulk of the film. A steady translation of the skyrmion crystal is triggered by the current-induced tensions and subsequently sustained by dissipative forces, gener…
Non-volatile memory and computing technology rely on efficient read and write of ultra-tiny information carriers that do not wear out. Magnetic skyrmions are emerging as a potential carrier since they are topologically robust nanoscale spin textures that can be manipulated with ultralow current density. To date, most of skyrmions are reported in metallic films, which suffer from additional Ohmic loss and thus high energy dissipation. Therefore, skyrmions in magnetic insulators are of technological importance for low-power information processing applications due to their low damping and the abs…
Skyrmion crystals (SkX) are periodic alignment of magnetic skyrmions, i.e., a type of topologically protected spin textures. Compared with ordinary crystals, they can be drastically deformed under anisotropic effects because they are composed of field patterns whose deformation does not cause any bond-breaking. This exotic ductility of SkX bring about great tunability of its collective excitations called emergent phonons, which are vital for magnonics application. The question is how to quantitatively determine the emergent phonons of distorted SkX. Here we systematically study the long wavele…
A magnetic skyrmion is a topological object that can exist as a solitary embedded in the vast ferromagnetic phase, or coexists with a group of its "siblings" in various stripy phases as well as skyrmion crystals (SkXs). Isolated skyrmions and skyrmions in an SkX are circular while a skyrmion in other phases is a stripe of various forms. Unexpectedly, the sizes of the three different types of skyrmions depend on material parameters differently. For chiral magnetic films with exchange stiffness constant $A$, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) strength $D$, and perpendicular magnetic ani…
This article aims at giving a general presentation of spintronics, an important field of research developing today along many new directions in physics of condensed matter. We tried to present simply the physical phenomena involved in spintronics -- no equations but many schematics. We also described the applications of spintronics, those of today and those expected to have an important impact on the next developments of the information and communication technologies.
The evolution of skyrmion crystal encapsulates skyrmion critical behaviors, such as nucleation, deformation and annihilation. Here, we achieve a tunable evolution of artificial skyrmion crystal in nanostructured synthetic antiferromagnet multilayers, which are comprised of perpendicular magnetic multilayers and nanopatterned arrays of magnetic nanodots. The out-of-plane magnetization hysteresis loops and first-order reversal curves show that the nucleation and annihilation of the artificial skyrmion can be controlled by tuning the diameter of and spacing between the nanodots. Moreover, when th…
Skyrmions are spatially localized magnetic swirls which carry a nonzero integer topological charge. We study crystals of skyrmions in a two-dimensional ferromagnet model with chiral interactions induced by the presence of broken inversion symmetry. We show that non-linear quartic mode-coupling terms allowed by symmetry enhances the Zeeman-field range over which the skyrmion-crystal phase remains stable. Furthermore, it leads to a significant dependence of the lattice constant of this spin crystal over this wide field range. Conduction electrons coupled to such a tunable spin crystal are shown …
