We reconsider the widely held view that the Mannheim--Kazanas (MK) vacuum solution for a static, spherically-symmetric system in conformal gravity (CG) predicts flat rotation curves, such as those observed in galaxies, without the need for dark matter. This prediction assumes that test particles have fixed rest mass and follow timelike geodesics in the MK metric in the vacuum region exterior to a spherically-symmetric representation of the galactic mass distribution. Such geodesics are not conformally invariant, however, which leads to an apparent discrepancy with the analogous calculation performed in the conformally-equivalent Schwarzschild-de-Sitter (SdS) metric, where the latter does not predict flat rotation curves. This difference arises since the mass of particles in CG must instead be generated dynamically through interaction with a scalar field. The energy-momentum of this required scalar field means that, in a general conformal frame from the equivalence class of CG solutions outside a static, spherically-symmetric matter distribution, the spacetime is not given by the MK vacuum solution. A unique frame does exist, however, for which the metric retains the MK form, since the scalar field energy-momentum vanishes despite the field being non-zero and radially dependent. Nonetheless, we show that in both this MK frame and the Einstein frame, in which the scalar field is constant, massive particles follow timelike geodesics of the SdS metric, thereby resolving the apparent frame dependence of physical predictions and unambiguously yielding rotation curves with no flat region. We also comment on how our analysis resolves the long-standing uncertainty regarding gravitational lensing in the MK metric. (Abridged)
We study the utilization of conformal compactification within the conformal approach to solving the constraints of general relativity for asymptotically flat initial data. After a general discussion of the framework, particular attention is paid to simplifications that arise when restricting to a class of initial data which have a certain $U(1)\times U(1)$ conformal symmetry.
In this paper we considered the most general form of non conformally flat cylindrically symmetric non-static space-times to study proper conformal motions using direct integration technique. We have shown that very special classes for cylindrically symmetric space-times admit proper conformal motions. This classification also covers non-static and static plane symmetric space-times. In [9] it was claimed that non conformally flat plane symmetric static space-times do not admit proper conformal motion. Here it is also shown that static and non static plane symmetric space-times admit proper con…
We show that time-reflection symmetric, asymptotically flat, static vacuum data which admit a non-trivial conformal rescaling which leads again to such data must be axi-symmetric and admit a conformal Killing field. Moreover, it is shown that there exists a 3-parameter family of such data.
Extending the results of an earlier article we give a complete description of the asymptotically flat, conformally non-flat, static vacuum data which admit non-trivial, asymptotically smooth conformal mappings onto other such data. These data form a 3-parameter family which decomposes into 1-parameter families of data which are conformal to each other. The data and the associated static vacuum solutions are given explicitly in terms of elliptic and, in a special case, elementary functions.
We consider two consecutive conformally flat eons in Penrose's Conformal Cyclic Cosmology and study how the perfect fluid matter content of the past eon determines the matter content of the present eon by means of Penrose's reciprocity hypothesis.
The classification problem for conformally-flat space-times that admit a separation of variables in the Hamilton-Jacobi equation of the scalar-tensor Brans-Dicke theory of gravity is examined. The field equations of the scalar-tensor theory of Brans and Dicke for conformally-flat Stackel space-times of type (1.1) are solved. An explicit form of the metric tensor and scalar field is obtained.
A subclassification of stationary spacetimes, endowed with one timelike and one spacelike Killing vectors, i.e., Petrov $G{_2}I$ on $T_2$ spaces, is proposed. Special attention deserves the Collison's theorem [1] and the branch of metrics circularly cyclicly (axially) symmetric possessing additionally the conformal flatness property reported by Garcia and Campuzano [2].
Conformally flat spherically symmetric cosmological models representing a charged perfect fluid as well as a bulk viscous fluid distribution have been obtained. The cosmological constant Λis found positive and is a decreasing function of time which is consistent with the recent supernovae observations. The physical and geometrical properties of the models are discussed.
We discuss conformally flat plane wave solutions of Einstein equations depending on the plane wave phase $ξ=ωτ-{\bf qx}$, where $τ$ is the conformal time. We show that ideal fluid Einstein equations and scalar fields with exponential self-interaction have solutions of this form. We consider in more detail the source depending on $ξ$ with $ω=\vert{\bf q}\vert$ describing models of a massless scalar field, electromagnetic field and relativistic particles with space-time depending mass density. We obtain explicit conformally flat metrics solving Einstein equations with such a source of the energy…
The relation between the technique of conformal flat and Damour-Ruffini-Zhao's method is investigated in this paper. It is pointed out that the two methods give the same results when the metric has the form $g_{αβ=0},$ with $α=0,1$ and $β=2,3$. It is indicated that the two methods are not equivalent for general case.
Given a time symmetric initial data set for the vacuum Einstein field equations which is conformally flat near infinity, it is shown that the solutions to the regular finite initial value problem at spatial infinity extend smoothly through the critical sets where null infinity touches spatial infinity if and only if the initial data coincides with Schwarzschild data near infinity.
A new method is presented for obtaining the general conformally flat radiation metric by using the differential operators of Machado Ramos and Vickers (a generalisation of the GHP operators) which are invariant under null rotations and spin and boosts. The solution is found by constructing involutive tables of these derivatives applied to the quantities which arise in the Karlhede classification of metrics.
The 3-space of a universe model is defined at a certain simultaneity. Hence space depends on which time is used. We find a general formula generating all known transformations to conformally flat spacetime coordinates, and work out the physical interpretation of conformal coordinate systems in different universe models. We show that continual creation appears when conformal time is used in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models with negative spatial curvature, and in universe models where the inflationary era started as a quantum fluctuation at t > 0, for example at the Planck time. A general proce…
The field equations of the recent nonlocal generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation are presented in a form that is reminiscent of general relativity. The implications of the nonlocal field equations are studied in the case of conformally flat spacetimes. Even in this simple case, the field equations are intractable. Therefore, to gain insight into the nature of these equations, we investigate the structure of nonlocal gravity in two-dimensional spacetimes. While any smooth 2D spacetime is conformally flat and satisfies Einstein's field equations, only a subset containing either a Ki…
Solution of Einstein Field Equations for Anisotropic Matter with Vanishing Complexity: Spacetime Metric Satisfying Karmarkar Condition and Conformally Flat Geometry
The collapse scenario of a scalar field along with a perfect fluid distribution is investigated for a conformally flat spacetime. The theorem for the integrability of an anharmonic oscillator has been utilized. For a pure power law potential of the form $ϕ^{n+1}$, it is found that a central singularity is formed which is covered by an apparent horizon for $n>0$ and $n<-3$. Some numerical results have also been presented for a combination of two different powers of $ϕ$ in the potential.
We discuss the concepts of Weyl and Riemann frames in the context of metric theories of gravity and state the fact that they are completely equivalent as far as geodesic motion is concerned. We apply this result to conformally flat spacetimes and show that a new picture arises when a Riemannian spacetime is taken by means of geometrical gauge transformations into a Minkowskian flat spacetime. We find out that in the Weyl frame gravity is described by a scalar field. We give some examples of how conformally flat spacetime configurations look when viewed from the standpoint of a Weyl frame. We s…
In this paper we propose a class of exact solutions (stationary and non-stationary) of Einstein's field equations. The energy-momentum tensors of the solutions describe dark energy.
We construct an anti-de-Sitter (AdS) geometry from a conformal field theory (CFT) defined on a general conformally flat manifold via a flow equation associated with the curved manifold, which we refer to as the primary flow equation. We explicitly show that the induced metric associated with the primary flow equation becomes AdS whose boundary is the curved manifold. Interestingly, it turns out that such an AdS metric with conformally flat boundary is obtained from the usual Poincare AdS by a simple bulk diffeomorphism transformation. We also demonstrate that the emergence of such an AdS space…
All spherically symmetric Riemannian metrics of constant scalar curvature in any dimension can be written down in a simple form using areal coordinates. All spherical metrics are conformally flat, so we search for the conformally flat representations of these geometries. We find all solutions for the conformal factor in 3, 4 and 6 dimensions. We write them in closed form, either in terms of elliptic or elementary functions. We are particularly interested in 3-dimensional spaces because of the link to General Relativity. In particular, all 3-dimensional constant negative scalar curvature spheri…
Held has proposed an integration procedure within the GHP formalism built around four real, functionally independent, zero-weighted scalars. He suggests that such a procedure would be particularly simple for the `optimal situation', when the formalism directly supplies the full quota of four scalars of this type; a spacetime without any Killing vectors would be such a situation. Wils has recently obtained a metric which he claims is the only conformally flat, pure radiation metric which is not a plane wave; this metric has been shown by Koutras to admit no Killing vectors, in general. Therefor…
A quantum-field model of the conformally flat space is formulated using a standard field-theoretical technique, a probability interpretation and a way to establish the classical limit. The starting point is the following: after conformal transformation of the Einstein -- Hilbert action, the conformal factor represents a scalar field with the negative kinetical term and the self-interaction inspired by the cosmological constant. (It has been found that quanta of such action have a negative value as a sequence of the negative energy.) The metric energy-momentum tensor of this scalar field is pro…
We find a new family of non-separable coordinate transformations bringing the FRW metrics into the manifestly conformally flat form. Our results are simple and complete, while our derivation is quite explicit. We also calculate all the FRW curvatures, including the Weyl tensor.
The central object in the theory of semiclassical stochastic gravity is the noise kernel which is the symmetric two point correlation function of the stress-energy tensor. Using the corresponding Wightman functions in Minkowski, Einstein and open Einstein spaces, we construct the noise kernels of a conformally coupled scalar field in these spacetimes. From them we show that the noise kernels in conformally-flat spacetimes, including the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes, can be obtained in closed analytic forms by using a combination of conformal and coordindate transformations.
The general metric for conformally flat stationary cyclic symmetric noncircular spacetimes is explicitly given. In spite of the complexity introduced by the inclusion of noncircular contributions, the related metric is derived via the full integration of the conformal flatness constraints. It is also shown that the conditions for the existence of a rotation axis (axisymmetry) are the same ones which restrict the above class of spacetimes to be static. As a consequence, a known theorem by Collinson is just part of a more general result: any conformally flat stationary cyclic symmetric spacetime…
In this paper a thorough study of the normal form and the first integrability conditions arising from {\em bi-conformal vector fields} is presented. These new symmetry transformations were introduced in {\em Class. Quantum Grav.}\textbf{21}, 2153-2177 and some of their basic properties were addressed there. Bi-conformal vector fields are defined on a pseudo-Riemannian manifold through the differential conditions $\lie P_{ab}=ϕP_{ab}$ and $\lieΠ_{ab}=χΠ_{ab}$ where $P_{ab}$ and $Π_{ab}$ are orthogonal and complementary projectors with respect to the metric tensor $\rmg_{ab}$. One of the main re…
Ricci-flat metrics of the ultrahyperbolic signature which enjoy the l-conformal Galilei symmetry are constructed. They involve the AdS_2-metric in a way similar to the near horizon black hole geometries. The associated geodesic equations are shown to describe a second order dynamical system for which the acceleration generators are functionally independent.
Ibohal, Ishwarchandra and Singh proposed a class of exact, non-vacuum and conformally flat solutions of Einstein's equations whose stress tensor $T_{ab}$ has negative pressure. We show that $T_{ab}$ corresponds to an anisotropic fluid and the equation of state parameter seems not to be $ω= -1/2$. We consider the authors' constant cannot be the mass of a test particle but is related to a Rindler acceleration of a spherical distribution of uniformly accelerating observers.
We analyze in detail conformally flat spherically symmetric fluid distributions, satisfying a polytropic equation of state. Among the two possible families of relativistic polytropes, only one contains models which satisfy all the required physical conditions. The ensuing configurations are necessarily anisotropic and show interesting physical properties. Prospective applications of the presented models to the study of super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs, are discussed.
Using asymptotic characterization results of spacetimes at conformal infinity, we prove that Kerr-Schild-de Sitter spacetimes are in one-to-one correspondence with spacetimes in the Kerr-de Sitter-like class with conformally flat $\mathscr{I}$. Kerr-Schild-de Sitter are spacetimes of Kerr-Schild form with de Sitter background that solve the $(Λ>0)$-vacuum Einstein equations and admit a smooth conformal compactification sharing $\mathscr{I}$ with the background metric. Kerr-de Sitter-like metrics with conformally flat $\mathscr{I}$ are a generalization of the Kerr-de Sitter metrics, defined ori…
It is natural to expect and simple to prove that every conformally flat space possess the maximal number of conformal Killing vector fields (CKVs). On the other hand, it is interesting to ask whether the converse is true. Is conformal flatness a necessary condition for the existence of the maximal number of CKVs? In this review article it is proven that the answer is yes, a space admits the maximal number of CKVs if, and only if, it is conformally flat.
