Berry curvature plays a crucial role in exotic electronic states of quantum materials, such as intrinsic anomalous Hall effect. As Berry curvature is highly sensitive to subtle changes of electronic band structures, it can be finely tuned via external stimulus. Here, we demonstrate in SrRuO3 thin films that both the magnitude and sign of anomalous Hall resistivity can be effectively controlled with epitaxial strain. Our first-principles calculations reveal that epitaxial strain induces an additional crystal field splitting and changes the order of Ru d orbital energies, which alters the Berry curvature and leads to the sign and magnitude change of anomalous Hall conductivity. Furthermore, we show that the rotation of Ru magnetic moment in real space of tensile strained sample can result in an exotic nonmonotonic change of anomalous Hall resistivity with the sweeping of magnetic field, resembling the topological Hall effect observed in non-coplanar spin systems. These findings not only deepen our understanding of anomalous Hall effect in SrRuO3 systems, but also provide an effective tuning knob to manipulate Berry curvature and related physical properties in a wide range of quantum materials.
We report x-ray synchrotron experiments on epitaxial films of uranium, deposited on niobium and tungsten seed layers. Despite similar lattice parameters for these refractory metals, the uranium epitaxial arrangements are different and the strains propagated along the a-axis of the uranium layers are of opposite sign. At low temperatures these changes in epitaxy result in dramatic modifications to the behavior of the charge-density wave in uranium. The differences are explained with the current theory for the electron-phonon coupling in the uranium lattice. Our results emphasize the intriguing …
Manipulating the strain induced poly-domains and phase transition in correlated oxide material are important for high performance devices fabrication. Though the electronic transport in the strained oxide film at macroscopic scales can be directly measured, the anisotropic electronic state and the controllable phase separation cross the insulator-to-metal transition within nanoscale size are still elusive. Here, we selected VO2 crystal film as a prototypical oxide and achieved the manipulation of anisotropy electronic phase separation via injecting He+ nanobeam into VO2 film at room temperatur…
Here we visualize the trapping of topological surface states in the circular n-p junctions on the top surface of the 7-quintuple-layer three dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) Sb2Te3 epitaxial films. As shown by spatially- and field-dependent tunneling spectra, these trapped resonances show field-induced splittings between the degenerate time-reversal-symmetric states at zero magnetic field. These behaviors are attributed unambiguously to Berry-phase switch by comparing the experimental data with both numerical and semi-classical simulations. The successful electrostatic trapping of t…

High-index Bi2Se3(221) film has been grown on In2Se3-buffered GaAs(001), in which a much retarded strain relaxation dynamics is recorded. The slow strain-relaxation process of in epitaxial Bi2Se3(221) can be attributed to the layered structure of Bi2Se3 crystal, where the epifilm grown along [221] is like a pile of weakly-coupled quintuple layer slabs stacked side-by-side on substrate. Finally, we have revealed the strong chemical bonding at the interface of Bi2Se3 and In2Se3 by plotting differential charge contour calculated by first-principle method. This study points to the feasibility of a…
Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is an important transport signature revealing topological properties of magnetic materials and their spin textures. Recently, antiferromagnetic MnBi2Te4 has been demonstrated to be an intrinsic magnetic topological insulator that exhibits quantum AHE in exfoliated nanoflakes. However, its complicated AHE behaviors may offer an opportunity for the unexplored correlation between magnetism and band structure. Here, we show the Berry curvature dominated intrinsic AHE in wafer-scale MnBi2Te4 thin films. By utilizing a high-dielectric SrTiO3 as the back-gate, we unveil an…
The ability to manipulate oxygen anion defects rather than metal cations in complex oxides can facilitate creating new functionalities critical for emerging energy and device technologies. However, the difficulty in activating oxygen at reduced temperatures hinders the deliberate control of important defects, oxygen vacancies. Here, strontium cobaltite (SrCoOx) is used to demonstrate that epitaxial strain is a powerful tool for manipulating the oxygen vacancy concentration even under highly oxidizing environments and at annealing temperatures as low as 300 C. By applying a small biaxial tensil…
The quest for nonmagnetic Weyl semimetals with high tunability of phase has remained a demanding challenge. As the symmetry breaking control parameter, the ferroelectric order can be steered to turn on/off the Weyl semimetals phase, adjust the band structures around the Fermi level, and enlarge/shrink the momentum separation of Weyl nodes which generate the Berry curvature as the emergent magnetic field. Here, we report the realization of a ferroelectric nonmagnetic Weyl semimetal based on indium doped Pb1 xSnxTe alloy where the underlying inversion symmetry as well as mirror symmetry is broke…

Elemental defects in transition metal oxides is an important and intriguing subject that result in modifications in variety of physical properties including atomic and electronic structure, optical and magnetic properties. Understanding the formation of elemental vacancies and their influence on different physical properties is essential in studying the complex oxide thin films. In this study, we investigated the physical properties of epitaxial SrRuO3 thin films by systematically manipulating cation and/or oxygen vacancies, via changing the oxygen partial pressure (P(O2)) during the pulsed la…
The quantum Hall effect, with a Berry's phase of $π$ is demonstrated here on a single graphene layer grown on the C-face of 4H silicon carbide. The mobility is $\sim$ 20,000 cm$^2$/V$\cdot$s at 4 K and ~15,000 cm$^2$/V$\cdot$s at 300 K despite contamination and substrate steps. This is comparable to the best exfoliated graphene flakes on SiO$_2$ and an order of magnitude larger than Si-face epitaxial graphene monolayers. These and other properties indicate that C-face epitaxial graphene is a viable platform for graphene-based electronics.
The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) of epitaxial SrRuO$_3$ films with varying lattice parameters is investigated, and analyzed according to the Berry-phase scenario. SrRuO$_3$ thin films were deposited on SrTiO$_3$ substrates directly, or using intermediate buffer layers, in order to finely control the epitaxial strain. The AHE of the different films exhibits intrinsic features such as the sign change of the Hall resistivity with the temperature, even for small thicknesses of SrRuO$_3$. However, the anomalous Hall conductivity is greatly reduced from its intrinsic value as the carrier scattering i…
Various Co2 based Heusler compounds are predicted to be Weyl materials. These systems with broken symmetry possess a large Berry curvature, and introduce exotic transport properties. The present study on epitaxially grown Co2TiSn films is an initial approach to understand and explore this possibility. The anomalous Hall effect in the well-ordered Co2TiSn films has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The measured Hall conductivity is in good agreement to the calculated Berry curvature. Small deviations between them are due to the influence of skew scattering on the Hall eff…
Synthesis of crystallographically well-defined thin films of topological materials is important for unraveling their mesoscale quantum properties and for device applications. Mn$_3$Ge, an antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal with a chiral magnetic structure on a Kagome lattice, is expected to have enhanced Berry curvature around Weyl nodes near the Fermi energy, leading to large anomalous Hall / Nernst effects and a large spin-Hall effect. Using magnetron sputtering, we have grown epitaxial thin films of hexagonal D0$_{19}$ Mn$_3$Ge that are flat and continuous. Large anomalous Nernst and inverse …
Spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the interaction between the electron spin and the orbital angular momentum, can unlock rich phenomena at interfaces, in particular interconverting spin and charge currents. Conventional heavy metals have been extensively explored due to their strong SOC of conduction electrons. However, spin-orbit effects in classes of materials such as epitaxial 5d-electron transition metal complex oxides, which also host strong SOC, remain largely unreported. In addition to strong SOC, these complex oxides can also provide the additional tuning knob of epitaxy to control the electr…
Noncollinear antiferromagnets with a D0$_{19}$ (space group = 194, P6$_{3}$/mmc) hexagonal structure have garnered much attention for their potential applications in topological spintronics. Here, we report the deposition of continuous epitaxial thin films of such a material, Mn$_{3}$Sn, and characterize their crystal structure using a combination of x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Growth of Mn$_{3}$Sn films with both (0001) c-axis orientation and (40$\bar{4}$3) texture is achieved. In the latter case, the thin films exhibit a small uncompensated Mn moment in the basal …

Meanwhile, the research of topology-related physics, awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics, has led to discoveries of various exotic quantum states of matter, including the quantum (anomalous/spin) Hall [Q(A/S)H] e…
We report the growth of noncollinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mn$_3$Ni$_{0.35}$Cu$_{0.65}$N films and the orientation-dependent anomalous Hall effect (AHE) of (001) and (111) films due to nonzero Berry curvature. We found that post-annealing at 500$^\circ$C can significantly improve the AHE signals, though using the appropriate post-annealing conditions is important. The AHE and magnetization loops show sharp flipping at the coercive field in (111) films, while (001) films are hard to saturate by a magnetic field. The anomalous Hall conductivity of (111) films is an order of magnitude larger th…
Persistent confusion has existed between the intrinsic (Berry curvature) and the side jump mechanisms of anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in ferromagnets. We provide unambiguous identification of the side jump mechanism, in addition to the skew scattering contribution in epitaxial paramagnetic Ni$_{34}$Cu$_{66}$ thin films, in which the intrinsic contribution is by definition excluded. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the AHE further reveals that the side jump mechanism is dominated by the elastic scattering.
The topological kagome magnet (TKM) Fe3Sn2 exhibits unusual topological properties, flat electronic bands, and chiral spin textures, making it an exquisite materials platform to explore the interplay between topological band structure, strong electron correlations, and magnetism. Here we report the first synthesis of high-quality epitaxial (0001) Fe3Sn2 films with large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect close to that measured in bulk single crystals. In addition, we measured a large, anisotropic anomalous Nernst coefficient Syx of 1.26 μV/K, roughly 2-5x greater than that of common ferromagnets,…
In symmetry-broken crystalline solids, pole structures of Berry curvature (BC) can emerge, and they have been utilized as a versatile tool for controlling transport properties. For example, the monopole component of the BC is induced by the time-reversal symmetry breaking, and the BC dipole arises from a lack of inversion symmetry, leading to the anomalous Hall and nonlinear Hall effects, respectively. Based on first-principles calculations, we show that the ferroelectricity in a tin telluride monolayer produces a unique BC distribution, which offers charge- and spin-controllable photocurrents…
In this paper, the implementation of optical elements in the form of Pancharatnam-Berry optics is considered. With respect to 3D bulk and diffractive optics, acting on the dynamic phase of light, Pancharatnam-Berry optical elements transfer a phase which is geometric in nature by locally manipulating the polarization state of the incident beam. They can be realized as space-variant sub-wavelengths gratings that behave like inhomogeneous form-birefringent materials. We present a comprehensive work of simulation, realization, and optical characterization at the telecom wavelength of 1310 nm of t…
Considerable work has focused on the use of epitaxial strain to engineer domain structures in ferroic materials. Here, we revisit the observed reduction of domain variants in rhombohedral BiFeO3 films on rare-earth scandate substrates. Prior work has attributed the reduction of domain variants to anisotropic in-plane strain, but our findings suggest that the monoclinic distortion of the substrate, resulting from oxygen octahedral rotation, is the driving force for variant selection. We study epitaxial BiFeO3 DyScO3 (110)o heterostructures with and without ultrathin, cubic SrTiO3 buffer layers …
The recent observation of Weyl fermions in the itinerant 4d ferromagnetic perovskite SrRuO3 points to this material being a good platform for exploring novel physics related to a pair of Weyl nodes in epitaxial heterostructures. In this letter, we report the thickness-dependent magnetotransport properties of ultra-high-quality epitaxial SrRuO3 films grown under optimized conditions on SrTiO3 substrates. Signatures of Weyl fermion transport, i.e., unsaturated linear positive magnetoresistance accompanied by a quantum oscillation having a π Berry phase, were observed in films with thicknesses as…
Magnetic Weyl fermions, which occur in magnets, have novel transport phenomena related to pairs of Weyl nodes, and they are, of both, scientific and technological interest, with the potential for use in high-performance electronics, spintronics and quantum computing. Although magnetic Weyl fermions have been predicted to exist in various oxides, evidence for their existence in oxide materials remains elusive. SrRuO3, a 4d ferromagnetic metal often used as an epitaxial conducting layer in oxide heterostructures, provides a promising opportunity to seek for the existence of magnetic Weyl fermion…
Magnetic semimetals have increasingly emerged as lucrative platforms hosting spin-based topological phenomena in real and momentum spaces. Of particular interest is the emergence of Berry curvature, whose geometric origin, accessibility from Hall transport experiments, and material tunability, bodes well for new physics and practical devices. Cr1+dTe2, a self-intercalated magnetic transition metal dichalcogenide, TMD, exhibits attractive natural attributes relevant to such applications, including topological magnetism, tunable electron filling, magnetic frustration etc. While recent studies ha…
The inverse spinel ferrimagnetic NiCo$_2$O$_4$ possesses high magnetic Curie temperature $T_C$, high spin polarization, and strain-tunable magnetic anisotropy. Understanding the thickness scaling limit of these intriguing magnetic properties in NiCo$_2$O$_4$ thin films is critical for their implementation in nanoscale spintronic applications. In this work, we report the unconventional magnetotransport properties of epitaxial (001) NiCo$_2$O$_4$ films on MgAl$_2$O$_4$ substrates in the ultrathin limit. Anomalous Hall effect measurements reveal strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy for films …
The field of spinoptronics is underpinned by good control over photonic spin-orbit coupling in devices that possess strong optical nonlinearities. Such devices might hold the key to a new era of optoelectronics where momentum and polarization degrees-of-freedom of light are interwoven and interfaced with electronics. However, manipulating photons through electrical means is a daunting task given their charge neutrality and requires complex electro-optic modulation of their medium. In this work, we present electrically tunable microcavity exciton-polariton resonances in a Rashba-Dresselhaus spi…
Spin-orbit torques (SOT) in thin film heterostructures originate from strong spin-orbit interactions (SOI) that, in the bulk, generate a spin current as the result of extrinsic spin-dependent, skew or/and side-jump, scattering, or in the intrinsic case due to Berry curvature in the conduction band. While most SOT studies have focused on materials with heavy metal components, the oxide perovskite SrRuO3 has been predicted to have a pronounced Berry curvature. Through quantification of its spin current by the SOT exerted on an adjacent Co ferromagnetic layer, we determine that SrRuO3 has a stron…

Working with epitaxial films of Fe, we succeeded in independent control of different scattering processes in the anomalous Hall effect. The result appropriately accounted for the role of phonons, thereby clearly exposing the fundamental flaws of the standard plot of the anomalous Hall resistivity versus longitudinal resistivity. A new scaling has been thus established that allows an unambiguous identification of the intrinsic Berry curvature mechanism as well as the extrinsic skew scattering and side-jump mechanisms of the anomalous Hall effect.
The viscous Gilbert damping parameter governing magnetization dynamics is of primary importance for various spintronics applications. Although, the damping constant is believed to be anisotropic by theories. It is commonly treated as a scalar due to lack of experimental evidence. Here, we present an elaborate angle dependent broadband ferromagnetic resonance study of high quality epitaxial La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ films. Extrinsic effects are suppressed and we show convincing evidence of anisotropic damping with twofold symmetry at room temperature. The observed anisotropic relaxation is …
Non-collinear antiferromagnets, with either an L1$_{2}$ cubic crystal lattice (e.g. Mn$_{3}$Ir and Mn$_{3}$Pt) or a D0$_{19}$ hexagonal structure (e.g. Mn$_{3}$Sn and Mn$_{3}$Ge), exhibit a number of novel phenomena of interest to topological spintronics. Amongst the cubic systems, for example, tetragonally distorted Mn$_{3}$Pt exhibits an intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE). However, Mn$_{3}$Pt only enters a non-collinear magnetic phase close to the stoichiometric composition and at suitably large thicknesses. Therefore, we turn our attention to Mn$_{3}$Ir, the material of choice for use in…
Here we demonstrate how the Fermi surface topology and quantum many-body interactions can be manipulated via epitaxial strain in the spin-triplet superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and its isoelectronic counterpart Ba$_2$RuO$_4$ using oxide molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), \emph{in situ} angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and transport measurements. Near the topological transition of the $γ$ Fermi surface sheet, we observe clear signatures of critical fluctuations, while the quasiparticle mass enhancement is found to increase rapidly and monotonically with increasing Ru-O bond distance.…
Manipulating the orbital occupation of valence electrons via epitaxial strain in an effort to induce new functional properties requires considerations of how changes in the local bonding environment affect the band structure at the Fermi level. Using synchrotron radiation to measure the x-ray linear dichroism of epitaxially strained films of the correlated oxide CaFeO3, we demonstrate that the orbital polarization of the Fe valence electrons is opposite from conventional understanding. Although the energetic ordering of the Fe 3d orbitals is confirmed by multiplet ligand field theory analysis …
The effect of x-rays on an orbital and charge ordered epitaxial film of a Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ is presented. As the film is exposed to x-rays, the antiferromagnetic response increases and concomitantly the conductivity of the film improve. These results are discussed in terms of a persistent x-ray induced doping, leading to a modification of the magnetic structure. This effect allows writing electronic and magnetic domains in the film and represents a novel way of manipulating magnetism.

Surface polaritons, e.g., surface plasmon polaritons, are invaluable tools in nanophotonics. However, considerable plasmon loss narrows the application regime of plasmonic devices. Here we reveal some general conditions for lossless surface polaritons to emerge at the interface of a gain and a loss media. The gain medium does not only compensate the energy loss, but also modifies surface wave oscillation mechanisms. A new type of surface polaritons induced by the sign switch of the imaginary part of the permittivity across the interface is discovered. The surface polaritons exhibit spin Hall e…
Engineering the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the emerging magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) has great potentials for quantum information processing and spintronics applications. In this letter, we synthesize the epitaxial Bi2Te3/MnTe magnetic heterostructures and observe pronounced AHE signals from both layers combined together. The evolution of the resulting hybrid AHE intensity with the top Bi2Te3 layer thickness manifests the presence of an intrinsic ferromagnetic phase induced by the topological surface states at the heterolayer-interface. More importantly, by doping the Bi2Te3 laye…
