We consider Kolmogorov operator $-\nabla \cdot a \cdot \nabla + b \cdot \nabla$ with measurable uniformly elliptic matrix $a$ and prove Gaussian lower and upper bounds on its heat kernel under minimal assumptions on the vector field $b$ and its divergence ${\rm div\,}b$. More precisely, we prove:
(1) Gaussian lower bound, provided that ${\rm div\,}b \geq 0$, and $b$ is in the class of form-bounded vector fields (containing e.g.\,the class $L^d$, the weak $L^d$ class, as well as some vector fields that are not even in $L_{\rm loc}^{2+\varepsilon}$, $\varepsilon>0$); in these assumptions, the Gaussian upper bound is in general invalid;
(2) Gaussian upper bound, provided that $b$ is form-bounded, and the positive part of ${\rm div\,}b$ is in the Kato class; in these assumptions, the Gaussian lower bound is in general invalid;
(3) Gaussian upper and lower bounds, provided that $b$ is form-bounded, ${\rm div\,}b$ is in the Kato class;
(4) A priori Gaussian upper and lower bounds, provided that $b$ is in a large class containing the class of form-bounded vector fields, ${\rm div\,}b$ is in the Kato class.
This article focuses on parabolic equations with rough diffusion coefficients which are ill-posed in the classical sense of distributions due to the presence of a singular forcing. Inspired by the philosophy of rough paths and regularity structures, we introduce a notion of modelled distribution which is suitable in this context. We prove two general tools for reconstruction and integration, as well as a product lemma which is tailor made for the reconstruction of the rough diffusion operator. This yields a partially automated deterministic theory, which we apply to obtain an existence and uni…
Several aspects of regularity theory for parabolic systems are investigated under the effect of random perturbations. The deterministic theory, when strict parabolicity is assumed, presents both classes of systems where all weak solutions are in fact more regular, and examples of systems with weak solutions which develop singularities in finite time. Our main result is the extension of a regularity result due to Kalita to the stochastic case. Concerning the examples with singular solutions (outside the setting of Kalita's regularity result), we do not know whether stochastic noise may prevent …
In this paper we establish the exact growth of the solution of the singular quasilinear p-parabolic obstacle problem near the free boundary from which we deduce its porosity.
We construct examples of blowup from smooth data for complex-valued solutions to linear uniformly parabolic equations in dimension $n \geq 2$, which are exactly as irregular as parabolic energy estimates allow.
In this paper, we consider the following symmetric Dirichlet forms on a metric measure space $(M,d,μ)$: $$\mathcal{E}(f,g) = \mathcal{E}(^{(c)}(f,g)+\int_{M\times M} (f(x)-f(y))(g(x)-g(y))\,J(dx,dy),$$ where $\mathcal{E}(^{(c)}$ is a strongly local symmetric bilinear form and $J(dx,dy)$ is a symmetric Random measure on $M\times M$. Under general volume doubling condition on $(M,d,μ)$ and some mild assumptions on scaling functions, we establish stability results for upper bounds of heat kernel (resp.\ two-sided heat kernel estimates) in terms of the jumping kernels, the cut-off Sobolev inequali…
For a class of singular divergence type quasi-linear parabolic equations with a Radon measure on the right hand side we derive pointwise estimates for solutions via the nonlinear Wolff potentials.
The main aim of this article is to establish an $L_p$-theory for elliptic operators on manifolds with singularities. The particular class of differential operators discussed herein may exhibit degenerate or singular behavior near the singular ends of the manifolds. Such a theory is of importance for the study of elliptic and parabolic equations on non-compact, or even incomplete manifolds, with or without boundary.
The paper studies homogenization problem for a non-autonomous parabolic equation with a large random rapidly oscillating potential in the case of one dimensional spatial variable. We show that if the potential is a statistically homogeneous rapidly oscillating function of both temporal and spatial variables then, under proper mixing assumptions, the limit equation is deterministic and the convergence in probability holds. To the contrary, for the potential having a microstructure only in one of these variables, the limit problem is stochastic and we only prove the convergence in law.
Here we describe a simple and fundamental approach to the maximal L^p regularity of parabolic equations, which only uses the concept of singular integrals of Volterra type. Knowledge of analytic semigroups, R-boundedness or H^\infty-functional calculus are not required.
We establish Carleman estimates for singular/degenerate parabolic Dirichlet problems with degeneracy and singularity occurring in the interior of the spatial domain. Our results are completely new, since this situation is not covered by previous contributions for degeneracy and singularity on the boundary. In addition, we consider non smooth coefficients, thus preventing the use of standard calculations in this framework.
For any $α\in (0,1)$, we construct an example of a solution to a parabolic equation with measurable coefficients in two space dimensions which has an isolated singularity and is not better that $C^α$. We prove that there exists no solution to a fully nonlinear uniformly parabolic equation, in any dimension, which has an isolated singularity where it is not $C^2$ while it is analytic elsewhere, and it is homogeneous in $x$ at the time of the singularity. We build an example of a non homogeneous solution to a fully nonlinear uniformly parabolic equation with an isolated singularity, which we ver…
We study the boundary behavior of non-negative solutions to a class of degenerate/singular parabolic equations, whose prototype is the parabolic $p$-Laplacian. Assuming that such solutions continuously vanish on some distinguished part of the lateral part $S_T$ of a Lipschitz cylinder, we prove Carleson-type estimates, and deduce some consequences under additional assumptions on the equation or the domain. We then prove analogous estimates for non-negative solutions to a class of degenerate/singular parabolic equations, of porous medium type.
We exhibit a singularly perturbed parabolic problems for which the asymptotic behavior can be described by an one-dimensional ordinary differential equation. We estimate the continuity of attractors in the Hausdorff metric by rate of convergence of resolvent operator.
We study one-dimensional very singular parabolic equations with periodic boundary conditions and initial data in $BV$, which is the energy space. We show existence of solutions in this energy space and then we prove that they are viscosity solutions in the sense of Giga-Giga.
We study the Evolutionary p-Laplace Equation in the singular case 1 < p < 2. We prove that a weak solution has a time derivative in Sobolev's sense and that the time derivative is locally summable to some power > 1.
We study the uniqueness of singular radial (forward and backward) self-similar positive solutions of the equation $u_t-Δu = u^p, \quad x\in{\mathbb R}^n,\ t>0,$ where $p\geq(n+2)/(n-2)_+$.
The paper concerns singular solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations, which include removable singularities for viscosity solutions, a strengthening of the Hopf Lemma including parabolic equations, Strong maximum principle and Hopf Lemma for viscosity solutions including also parabolic equations.
We prove an estimate on the modulus of continuity at a boundary point of a cylindrical domain for local weak solutions to singular parabolic equations of p-laplacian type. The estimate is given in terms of a Wiener-type integral, defined by a proper elliptic p-capacity.
We consider non smooth general degenerate/singular parabolic equations in non divergence form with degeneracy and singularity occurring in the interior of the spatial domain, in presence of Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, we consider well posedness of the problem and then we prove Carleman estimates for the associated adjoint problem.
We study existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations, in bounded domains. We show that there exists a unique solution which satisfies possibly inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. To this purpose some barrier functions are properly introduced and used.
We consider a parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel system of chemotaxis model with singular sensitivity $u_t=Δu-χ\nabla\cdot(\frac{u}{v}\nabla v)$, $v_t=kΔv-v+u$ under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ $(n\geq2)$, with $χ,k>0$. It is proved that for any $k>0$, the problem admits global classical solutions, whenever $χ\in\big(0,-\frac{k-1}{2}+\frac{1}{2}\sqrt{(k-1)^2+\frac{8k}{n}}\big)$. The global solutions are moreover globally bounded if $n\le 8$. This shows an exact way the size of the diffusion constant $k$ of the chemicals $v$ effects th…
Motivated by an equation arising in magnetohydrodynamics, we prove that Holder continuous weak solutions of a nonlinear parabolic equation with singular drift velocity are classical solutions. The result is proved using the space-time Besov spaces introduced by Chemin and Lerner, combined with energy estimates, without any minimality assumption on the Holder exponent of the weak solutions.
We establish the existence of solutions of the Cauchy problem for a higher-order semilinear parabolic equation by introducing a new majorizing kernel. We also study necessary conditions on the initial data for the existence of local-in-time solutions and identify the strongest singularity of the initial data for the solvability of the Cauchy problem.
Asymptotic solutions of a quasilinear parabolic equation with a small parameter at the higher derivative are constructed near large-gradient and Lagrange singularities of A-type, which represent interest for studying processes of shock waves formation in physical media with a small nonzero viscosity.
This paper establishes sharp local regularity estimates for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear parabolic free boundary problems with singular absorption terms. The main difficulties are due to the blow-up of the source along the free boundary and the lack of a variational structure. The proof combines the power of the Ishii-Lions method with intrinsically parabolic oscillation estimates. The results are new, even for second-order linear operators in nondivergence form.
We consider degenerate and singular parabolic equations with $p$-Laplacian structure in bounded nonsmooth domains when the right-hand side is a signed Radon measure with finite total mass. We develop a new tool that allows global regularity estimates for the spatial gradient of solutions to such parabolic measure data problems, by introducing the (intrinsic) fractional maximal function of a given measure.
We prove an estimate on the modulus of continuity at a boundary point of a cylindrical domain for local weak solutions to singular parabolic equations of $p$-laplacian type, with $p$ in the sub-critical range $(1,\frac{2N}{N+1}]$. The estimate is given in terms of a Wiener-type integral, defined by a proper elliptic $p$-capacity.
We consider the IBVP in exterior domains for the p-Laplacian parabolic system. We prove regularity up to the boundary, extinction properties for p \in ( 2n/(n+2) , 2n/(n+1) ) and exponential decay for p= 2n/(n+1) .
We enumerate the local Petrovskii lacunas (that is, the domains of local regularity of the principal fundamental solutions) of strictly hyperbolic PDE's with constant coefficients in $R^N$ at the parabolic singular points of their wavefronts. These points form the next difficult family of classes of the natural classification of singular points after the so-called simple singularities, studied previously. Also we promote a computer program counting for topologically different morsifications of critical points of smooth functions, and hence also for local components of the complement of a gener…
In this paper we obtain sharp Petrovskii criteria for the p-parabolic equation, both in the degenerate case p>2 and the singular case 1<p<2. We also give an example of an irregular boundary point at which there is a barrier, thus showing that regularity cannot be characterized by the existence of just one barrier.
We study integrability of the derivative of solutions to a singular one-dimensional parabolic equation with initial data in $W^{1,1}$. In order to avoid additional difficulties we consider only the periodic boundary conditions. The problem we study is a gradient flow of a convex, linear growth variational functional. We also prove a similar result for the elliptic companion problem, i.e. the time semidiscretization.
We consider the Hardy-Hénon parabolic equation $u_t-Δu =|x|^a |u|^{p-1}u$ with $p>1$ and $a\in {\mathbb R}$. We establish the space-time singularity and decay estimates, and Liouville-type theorems for radial and nonradial solutions. As applications, we study universal and a priori bound of global solutions as well as the blow-up estimates for the corresponding initial boundary value problem.
In this article, we study certain type of boundary behaviour of positive solutions of the heat equation on the upper half-space of $\R^{n+1}$. We prove that the existence of the parabolic limit of a positive solution of the heat equation at a point in the boundary is equivalent to the existence of the strong derivative of the boundary measure of the solution at that point. Moreover, the parabolic limit and the strong derivative are equal.
This paper considers a certain doubly singular parabolic equations with one singularity occurs in the time derivative, whose model is \begin{equation*} \partial_tβ(u)-\operatorname{div}|Du|^{p-2}Du\ni0,\qquad \text{in}\quad Ω\times(0,T)\end{equation*} where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ and $N\geq3$. We show that the bounded weak solutions are locally continuous in the range $$2-ε_0\leq p<2,$$ provided $ε_0>0$ is small enough, and the continuity is stable as $p\to2$.
Let $P$ be a second-order, symmetric, and nonnegative elliptic operator with real coefficients defined on noncompact Riemannian manifold $M$, and let $V$ be a real valued function which belongs to the class of {\em small perturbation potentials} with respect to the heat kernel of $P$ in $M$. We prove that under some further assumptions (satisfying by a large classes of $P$ and $M$) the positive minimal heat kernels of $P-V$ and of $P$ on $M$ are equivalent. Moreover, the parabolic Martin boundary is stable under such perturbations, and the cones of all nonnegative solutions of the correspondin…
We investigate a non-homogeneous nonlinear heat equation which involves degenerate or singular coefficients belonging to the $A_2$ class of functions. We prove the existence of a Fujita exponent and describe the dichotomy existence/non-existence of global in time solutions. The $A_2$ coefficient admits either a singularity at the origin or a line of singularities. In this latter case, the problem is related to the fractional laplacian, through the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension and is a first attempt to develop a parabolic theory in this setting.
We study the regularity of the solutions to initial-boundary value problems for N-systems of the p-Laplacian type, in $n\geq 3$ space variables, with square-integrable external forces in the space-time cylinder. So, the ellipticity coefficient remains unbounded. The singular case $μ=0 $ is covered.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the Hardy parabolic equation $\partial_t u-Δu=|x|^{-γ}u^p$ with initial data $u_0$ singular at some point $z$. Our main results show that, if $z\neq 0$, then the optimal strength of the singularity of $u_0$ at $z$ for the solvability of the equation is the same as that of the Fujita equation $\partial_t u-Δu=u^p$. Moreover, if $z=0$, then the optimal singularity for the Hardy parabolic equation is weaker than that of the Fujita equation. We also obtain analogous results for a fractional case $\partial_t u+(-Δ)^{θ/2} u=|x|^{-γ}u^p$ with $0<θ<2$.
In this work we consider a class of stochastic parabolic equations with singular space depending potential, random driving force and random initial condition. For the analysis of these equations we combine the chaos expansion method from the white noise analysis and the concept of very weak solutions. For given stochastic parabolic equation we introduce the notion of a stochastic very weak solution, prove the existence and uniqueness of the very weak solution to corresponding stochastic initial value problem and show its independence of a regularization on given singular potential. In addition…
We are concerned with gradient estimates for solutions to a class of singular quasilinear parabolic equations with measure data, whose prototype is given by the parabolic $p$-Laplace equation $u_t-Δ_p u=μ$ with $p\in (1,2)$. The case when $p\in \big(2-\frac{1}{n+1},2\big)$ were studied in [15]. In this paper, we extend the results in [15] to the open case when $p\in \big(\frac{2n}{n+1},2-\frac{1}{n+1}\big]$ if $n\geq 2$ and $p\in(\frac{5}{4}, \frac{3}{2}]$ if $n=1$. More specifically, in a more singular range of $p$ as above, we establish pointwise gradient estimates via linear parabolic Riesz…
In this paper we build models for short-term, mean-term and long-term dynamics of dune and megariple morphodynamics. They are models that are degenerated parabolic equations which are, moreover, singularly perturbed. We, then give an existence and uniqueness result for the short-term and mean-term models. This result is based on a time-space periodic solution existence result for degenerated parabolic equation that we set out. Finally the short-term model is homogenized.
We study elliptic and parabolic problems governed by singular elliptic operators \begin{equation*} \mathcal L =\sum_{i,j=1}^{N+1}q_{ij}D_{ij}+\frac c y D_y \end{equation*} in the half-space $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}_+=\{(x,y): x \in \mathbb{R}^N, y>0\}$ under Neumann boundary conditions at $y=0$. More general operators and oblique derivative boundary conditions will be also considered.
We consider Kirchhoff equations with a small parameter epsilon in front of the second-order time-derivative, and a dissipative term whose coefficient may tend to 0 as t -> + infinity (weak dissipation). In this note we present some recent results concerning existence of global solutions, and their asymptotic behavior both as t -> + infinity and as epsilon -> 0. Since the limit equation is of parabolic type, this is usually referred to as a hyperbolic-parabolic singular perturbation problem. We show in particular that the equation exhibits hyperbolic or parabolic behavior depending on the value…
In this paper we consider viscosity solutions of a class of non-homogeneous singular parabolic equations $$\partial_t u-|Du|^γΔ_p^N u=f,$$ where $-1<γ<0$, $1<p<\infty$, and $f$ is a given bounded function. We establish interior Hölder regularity of the gradient by studying two alternatives: The first alternative uses an iteration which is based on an approximation lemma. In the second alternative we use a small perturbation argument.
In this paper we consider models for short-term, mean-term and long-term morphodynamics of dunes and megariples. We give an existence and uniqueness result for long term dynamics of dunes. This result is based on a time-space periodic solution existence result for degenerated parabolic equation that we set out. Finally the mean-term and long-term models are homogenized.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a locally finite connected weighted graph, and $Ω$ be an unbounded subset of $V$. Using Rothe's method, we study the existence of solutions for the semilinear heat equation $\partial_tu+|u|^{p-1}\cdot u=Δu~(p\ge1)$ and the parabolic variational inequality \begin{eqnarray*} \int_{Ω^\circ} \partial_tu\cdot(v-u)\,dμ\ge \int_{Ω^\circ}(Δu+f)\cdot(v-u)\,dμ\qquad\mbox{for any }v\in \mathcal{H}, \end{eqnarray*} where $\mathcal{H}=\{u\in W^{1,2}(V):u=0\mbox{ on }V\backslashΩ^\circ\}$.
We prove interior Hölder estimate for the spatial gradients of the viscosity solutions to the singular or degenerate parabolic equation $$ u_t=|\nabla u|^κ\mbox{div} (|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u), $$ where $p\in (1,\infty)$ and $κ\in (1-p,\infty).$ This includes the from $L^\infty$ to $C^{1,α}$ regularity for parabolic $p$-Laplacian equations in both divergence form with $κ=0$, and non-divergence form with $κ=2-p$. This work is a continuation of a paper by the last two authors \cite{JS}.
We consider parabolic equations on bounded smooth open sets $\Om\subset \R^N$ ($N\ge 1$) with mixed Dirichlet type boundary-exterior conditions associated with the elliptic operator $\mathscr{L} \coloneqq - Δ+ (-Δ)^{s}$ ($0<s<1$). Firstly, we prove several well-posedness and regularity results of the associated elliptic and parabolic problems with smooth, and then with singular boundary-exterior data. Secondly, we show the existence of optimal solutions of associated optimal control problems, and we characterize the optimality conditions. This is the first time that such topics have been prese…
We investigate weighted Sobolev regularity of weak solutions of non-homogeneous parabolic equations with singular divergence-free drifts. Assuming that the drifts satisfy some mild regularity conditions, we establish local weighted $L^p$-estimates for the gradients of weak solutions. Our results improve the classical one to the borderline case by replacing the $L^\infty$-assumption on solutions by solutions in the John-Nirenberg \textup{BMO} space. The results are also generalized to parabolic equations in divergence form with small oscillation elliptic symmetric coefficients and therefore imp…
