The discrepancy between theory and experiment severely limits the development of quantum key distribution (QKD). Reference-frame-independent (RFI) protocol has been proposed to avoid alignment of the reference frame. However, multiple optical modes caused by Trojan horse attacks and equipment loopholes lead to the imperfect emitted signal unavoidably. In this paper, we analyzed the security of the RFI-QKD protocol with non-qubit sources based on generalizing loss-tolerant techniques. The simulation results show that our work can effectively defend against non-qubit sources including a misaligned reference frame, state preparation flaws, multiple optical modes, and Trojan horse attacks. Moreover, it only requires the preparation of four quantum states, which reduces the complexity of the experiment in the future.

We propose a reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution with uncharacterized quantum bits. We show the security of the protocol. The protocol can also be useful for a channel that has a very low bit error rate but suffers a large, uncontrolled (but slow), unitary rotation.
We prove the unconditional security of the original Bennett 1992 protocol with strong reference pulse. We show that we may place a projection onto suitably defined qubit spaces before the receiver, which makes the analysis as simple as qubit-based protocols. Unlike the single-photon-based qubits, the qubits identified in this scheme are almost surely detected by the receiver even after a lossy channel. This leads to the key generation rate that is proportional to the channel transmission rate for proper choices of experimental parameters.
Vaidman described how a team of three players, each of them isolated in a remote booth, could use a three-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state to always win a game which would be impossible to always win without quantum resources. However, Vaidman's method requires all three players to share a common reference frame; it does not work if the adversary is allowed to disorientate one player. Here we show how to always win the game, even if the players do not share any reference frame. The introduced method uses a 12-qubit state which is invariant under any transformation $R_a \otimes R_b \otim…
Estimation of unknown qubit elementary gates and alignment of reference frames are formally the same problem. Using quantum states made out of $N$ qubits, we show that the theoretical precision limit for both problems, which behaves as $1/N^{2}$, can be asymptotically attained with a covariant protocol that exploits the quantum correlation of internal degrees of freedom instead of the more fragile entanglement between distant parties. This cuts by half the number of qubits needed to achieve the precision of the dense covariant coding protocol.
By exploiting a symmetric scheme for coupling $N$ spin-1/2 constituents (the physical qubits) to states with total angular momentum $N/2-1$, we construct rotationally invariant logical qudits of dimension $d=N-1$. One can encode all qudit states, and realize all qudit measurements, by this construction. The rotational invariance of all relevant objects enables one to transmit quantum information without having aligned reference frames between the parties that exchange the qudits. We illustrate the method by explicit constructions of reference-frame-free qubits and qutrits and, for the qubit ca…
In this paper fields of quantum reference frames based on gauge transformations of rational string states are described in a way that, hopefully, makes them more understandable than their description in an earlier paper. The approach taken here is based on three main points: (1) There are a large number of different quantum theory representations of natural numbers, integers, and rational numbers as states of qubit strings. (2) For each representation, Cauchy sequences of rational string states give a representation of the real (and complex) numbers. A reference frame is associated to each rep…
The genuine concurrence is a standard quantifier of multipartite entanglement, detection and quantification of which still remains a difficult problem from both theoretical and experimental point of view. Although many efforts have been devoted toward the detection of multipartite entanglement (e.g., using entanglement witnesses), measuring the degree of multipartite entanglement, in general, requires some knowledge about an exact shape of a density matrix of the quantum state. An experimental reconstruction of such density matrix can be done by full state tomography which amounts to having th…
We propose a rotationally-invariant quantum key distribution scheme that uses a pair of orthogonal qubit trines, realized as mixed states of three physical qubits. The measurement outcomes do not depend on how Alice and Bob choose their individual reference frames. The efficient key generation by two-way communication produces two independent raw keys, a bit key and a trit key. For a noiseless channel, Alice and Bob get a total of 0.573 key bits per trine state sent (98% of the Shannon limit). This exceeds by a considerable amount the yield of standard trine schemes, which ideally attain half …
We show that communication without a shared reference frame is possible using entangled states. Both classical and quantum information can be communicated with perfect fidelity without a shared reference frame at a rate that asymptotically approaches one classical bit or one encoded qubit per transmitted qubit. We present an optical scheme to communicate classical bits without a shared reference frame using entangled photon pairs and linear optical Bell state measurements.
We analyze quantum state estimation for finite samples based on symmetry information. The used measurement concept compares an unknown qubit to a reference state. We describe explicitly an adaptive strategy, that enhances the estimation fidelity of these measurements.
Entangling an unknown qubit with one type of reference state is generally impossible. However, entangling an unknown qubit with two types of reference states is possible. To achieve this, we introduce a new class of states called zero sum amplitude (ZSA) multipartite, pure entangled states for qubits and study their salient features. Using shared-ZSA state, local operation and classical communication we give a protocol for creating multipartite entangled states of an unknown quantum state with two types of reference states at remote places. This provides a way of encoding an unknown pure qubit…
We show that private shared reference frames can be used to perform private quantum and private classical communication over a public quantum channel. Such frames constitute a novel type of private shared correlation (distinct from private classical keys or shared entanglement) useful for cryptography. We present optimally efficient schemes for private quantum and classical communication given a finite number of qubits transmitted over an insecure channel and given a private shared Cartesian frame and/or a private shared reference ordering of the qubits. We show that in this context, it is use…
Molecular electronic spins represent one of the most promising building blocks for the design of quantum computing architectures. However, the advancement of this technology requires the increase of spin lifetime at ambient temperature. Spin-phonon coupling has been recognized as the key interaction dictating spin relaxation at high temperature in molecular crystals and the search for chemical-design principles to control such interaction are a fundamental challenge in the field. Here we present a multi-reference first-principles analysis of the g-tensor and the spin-phonon coupling in a serie…
We describe a quantum key distribution protocol based on pairs of entangled qubits that generates a secure key between two partners in an environment of unknown and slowly varying reference frame. A direction of particle delivery is required, but the phases between the computational basis states need not be known or fixed. The protocol can simplify the operation of existing setups and has immediate applications to emerging scenarios such as earth-to-satellite links and the use of integrated photonic waveguides. We compute the asymptotic secret key rate for a two-qubit source, which coincides w…
From the interaction between a frequency comb and an atomic qubit, we derive quantum protocols for the determination of the carrier-envelope offset phase, using the qubit coherence as a reference, and without the need of frequency doubling or an octave spanning comb. Compared with a trivial interference protocol, the multipulse protocol results in a polynomial enhancement of the sensitivity O(N^{-2}) with the number N of laser pulses involved. We present specializations of the protocols using optical or hyperfine qubits, Lambda-schemes and Raman transitions, and introduce methods where the ref…
We present a quantum error correction code which protects three quantum bits (qubits) of quantum information against one erasure, i.e., a single-qubit arbitrary error at a known position. To accomplish this, we encode the original state by distributing quantum information over six qubits which is the minimal number for the present task (see reference [1]). The encoding and error recovery operations for such a code are presented. It is noted that the present code is also a three-qubit quantum hidded information code over each qubit. In addition, an encoding scheme for hiding $n$-qubit quantum i…
The optimal N qubit states featuring highest sensitivity to small misalignment of cartesian reference frames are found using the Quantum Cramer-Rao bound. It is shown that the optimal states are supported on the symmetric subspace and hence are mathematically equivalent to a single spin J=N/2. Majorana representation of spin states is used to reveal a beautiful connection between the states optimal for aligning reference frames and the platonic solids.
We consider quantum communication in the case that the communicating parties not only do not share a reference frame but use imperfect quantum communication channels, in that each channel applies some fixed but unknown unitary rotation to each qubit. We discuss similarities and differences between reference frames within that quantum communication model and gauge fields in gauge theory. We generalize the concept of refbits and analyze various quantum communication protocols within the communication model.
Protocols for testing or exploiting quantum correlations-such as entanglement, Bell nonlocality, and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering- generally assume a common reference frame between two parties. Establishing such a frame is resource-intensive, and can be technically demanding for distant parties. While Bell nonlocality can be demonstrated with high probability for a large class of two-qubit entangled states when the parties have one or no shared reference direction, the degree of observed nonlocality is measurement-orientation dependent and can be arbitrarily small. In contrast, we theoreti…
We propose a scheme for encoding logical qubits in a subspace protected against collective rotations around the propagation axis using the polarization and transverse spatial degrees of freedom of single photons. This encoding allows for quantum key distribution without the need of a shared reference frame. We present methods to generate entangled states of two logical qubits using present day down-conversion sources and linear optics, and show that the application of these entangled logical states to quantum information schemes allows for alignment-free tests of Bell's inequalities, quantum d…
We present a quantum algorithm that provides a general approach for obtaining the energy spectrum of a physical system without making a guess on its eigenstates. In this algorithm, a probe qubit is coupled to a quantum register $R$ which consists of one ancilla qubit and a $n$-qubit register that represents the system. $R$ is prepared in a general reference state, and a general excitation operator acts on $R$ is constructed. The probe exhibits a dynamical response only when it is resonant with a transition from the reference state to an excited state of $R$ which contains the eigenstates of th…
We experimentally test the recently predicted anisotropic invariance properties of pure three-qubit states, via generation and measurement of polarisation-path entangled three-qubit states. These properties do not require aligned reference frames and can be determined from measurements on any two of the qubits. They have several applications, such as a universal ordering of pairwise quantum correlations, strong monogamy relations for Bell inequalities and quantum steering, and a complementarity relation for Bell nonlocality versus 3-tangle, some of which we also test. The results indicate that…
We investigate the dynamics of an N -level quantum system weakly coupled to a thermal reservoir. For any fixed temperature of the bath there exists a natural reference state: the equilibrium state of the system. Among all quantum operations on the system one distinguishes Davies maps, they pre- serve the equilibrium state, satisfy the detailed balance condition and belong to a semi-group. A complete characterization of the three dimensional set of qubit Davies maps is given. We analyze these maps and find their mini- mum output entropy. A characterization of Davies maps for qutrits is also pro…
This thesis is a compilation of research in relativistic quantum information theory, and research in quantum reference frames. The research in the former category provides a fundamental construction of quantum information theory of localised qubits in curved spacetimes. For example, this concerns quantum experiments on free-space photons and electrons in the vicinity of the Earth. From field theory a description of localised qubits that traverse classical trajectories in curved spacetimes is obtained, for photons and massive spin-1/2 fermions. The equations governing the evolution of the two-d…
In a recent work (Borras et al., Phys. Rev. A {\bf 79}, 022108 (2009)), we have determined, for various decoherence channels, four-qubit initial states exhibiting the most robust possible entanglement. Here we explore some geometrical features of the trajectories in state space generated by the decoherence process, connecting the initially robust pure state with the completely decohered mixed state obtained at the end of the evolution. We characterize these trajectories by recourse to the distance between the concomitant time dependent mixed state and different reference states.
We identify a novel mechanism to read out a single solid-state electron spin using an all-electrical spin-to-charge conversion in a closed system. Our scheme uses three donors and two electron spins, one spin is the qubit, the other is a reference. The population in the third, originally ionized, donor is monitored with an electrometer. Energy-dependent tunnelling of the reference spin to the ionized donor is used to determine the state of the qubit. In contrast to previous methods [e.g., B.E. Kane, Nature (London), \textbf{393}, 133 (1998)] we avoid double electron occupancy of any site withi…
We present a procedure inspired by dense coding, which enables a highly efficient transmission of information of a continuous nature. The procedure requires the sender and the recipient to share a maximally entangled state. We deal with the concrete problem of aligning reference frames or trihedra by means of a quantum system. We find the optimal covariant measurement and compute the corresponding average error, which has a remarkably simple close form. The connection of this procedure with that of estimating unitary transformations on qubits is briefly discussed.

We experimentally demonstrate, using qubits encoded in photon polarization, that if two parties share a single reference direction and use locally orthogonal measurements they will always violate a Bell inequality, up to experimental deficiencies. This contrasts with the standard view of Bell inequalities in which the parties need to share a complete reference frame for their measurements. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate that as the reference direction degrades the probability of violating a Bell inequality decreases smoothly to (39.7 +/- 0.1) % in the limiting case that the observe…
We analyze various scenarios for entangling two initially unentangled qubits. In particular, we propose an optimal universal entangler which entangles a qubit in unknown state $|Ψ>$ with a qubit in a reference (known) state $|0>$. That is, our entangler generates the output state which is as close as possible to the pure (symmetrized) state $(|Ψ>|0> +|0>|Ψ>)$. The most attractive feature of this entangling machine, is that the fidelity of its performance (i.e. the distance between the output and the ideally entangled -- symmetrized state) does not depend on the input and takes the constant val…
We present a new scheme for teleporting a quantum state between two parties whose local reference frames are misaligned by the action of a finite symmetry group. Unlike other proposals, our scheme requires the same amount of classical communication and entangled resources as conventional teleportation, does not reveal any reference frame information, and is robust against changes in reference frame alignment while the protocol is underway. The mathematical foundation of our scheme is a unitary error basis which is permuted up to a phase by the conjugation action of the group. We completely cla…
It is not possible to disentangle a qubit in an unknown state $|ψ>$ from a set of (N-1) ancilla qubits prepared in a specific reference state $|0>$. That is, it is not possible to {\em perfectly} perform the transformation $(|ψ,0...,0\r +|0,ψ,...,0\r +...+ |0,0,...ψ\r) \to |0,...,0>\otimes |ψ>$. The question is then how well we can do? We consider a number of different methods of extracting an unknown state from an entangled state formed from that qubit and a set of ancilla qubits in an known state. Measuring the whole system is, as expected, the least effective method. We present various quan…
A subset of the concepts of circuit quantum electrodynamics are reviewed as a reference to the Axion Dark Matter Experiment (ADMX) community as part of the proceedings of the 2nd Workshop on Microwave Cavities and Detectors for Axion Research. The classical Lagrangians and Hamiltonians for an LC circuit are discussed along with black box circuit quantization methods for a weakly anharmonic qubit coupled to a resonator or cavity.
Alice wants to convey the value of a parameter to Bob with whom she does not share a reference frame. What physical object can she use for this task? Shall she encode this value into the angle between two physical vectors such as the angle between two spins? Can she benefit from using entanglement? We approach these questions here and show that an entangled state of two qubits has three parameters that are invariant under changes of the reference frame. We also calculate the average information gain, when each one of these parameters is used for communication. We compare our result with the sp…
We present two new schemes for quantum teleportation between parties whose local reference frames are misaligned by the action of a compact Lie group G. These schemes require no prior alignment of reference frames and are unaffected by arbitrary changes in reference frame alignment during execution, suiting them to situations of rapid reference frame drift. Our tight scheme yields improved purity compared to standard teleportation, in some cases substantially --- this includes the case of qubit teleportation under arbitrary SU(2) reference frame uncertainty--- while communicating no informatio…
The spin is the prime example of a qubit. Encoding and decoding information in the spin qubit is operationally well defined through the Stern-Gerlach set-up in the non-relativistic (i.e., low velocity) limit. However, an operational definition of the spin in the relativistic regime is missing. The origin of this difficulty lies in the fact that, on the one hand, the spin gets entangled with the momentum in Lorentz-boosted reference frames, and on the other hand, for a particle moving in a superposition of velocities, it is impossible to "jump" to its rest frame, where spin is unambiguously def…

We introduce and demonstrate experimentally: (1) a framework called "gate set tomography" (GST) for self-consistently characterizing an entire set of quantum logic gates on a black-box quantum device; (2) an explicit closed-form protocol for linear-inversion gate set tomography (LGST), whose reliability is independent of pathologies such as local maxima of the likelihood; and (3) a simple protocol for objectively scoring the accuracy of a tomographic estimate without reference to target gates, based on how well it predicts a set of testing experiments. We use gate set tomography to characteriz…
In a `shortcut-to-adiabaticity' (STA) protocol, the counter-diabatic Hamiltonian, which suppresses the non-adiabatic transition of a reference `adiabatic' trajectory, induces a quantum uncertainty of the work cost in the framework of quantum thermodynamics. Following a theory derived recently [Funo et al 2017 Phys. Rev. Lett. 118 100602], we perform an experimental measurement of the STA work statistics in a high-quality superconducting Xmon qubit. Through the frozen-Hamiltonian and frozen-population techniques, we experimentally realize the two-point measurement of the work distribution for g…
We investigate a scheme for topological quantum computing using optical hybrid qubits and make an extensive comparison with previous all-optical schemes. We show that the photon loss threshold reported by Omkar {\it et al}. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 060501 (2020)] can be improved further by employing postselection and multi-Bell-state-measurement based entangling operation to create a special cluster state, known as Raussendorf lattice for topological quantum computation. In particular, the photon loss threshold is enhanced up to $5.7\times10^{-3}$, which is the highest reported value given a rea…
We experimentally demonstrate a proposal [Phys. Rev. A 87, 052325 (2013)] of a scheme for robust distribution of polarization entangled photon pairs over collective noisy channels having the reciprocity. Although the scheme employs the robustness of two qubit decoherence-free subspace, by utilizing the forward propagation of one half of the entangled photons and the backward propagation of a classical reference light, it achieves an entanglement-sharing rate proportional to the transmittance of the quantum channel for the signal photon. We experimentally observed the efficient sharing rate whi…
We consider the task of deciding whether an unknown qubit state falls in a prescribed neighborhood of a reference state. We assume that several copies of the unknown state are given and apply a unitary operation pairwise on them combined with a post-selection scheme conditioned on the measurement result obtained on one of the qubits of the pair. The resulting transformation is a deterministic, nonlinear, chaotic map in the Hilbert space. We derive a class of these transformations capable of orthogonalizing nonorthogonal qubit states after a few iterations. These nonlinear maps orthogonalize st…
The paper investigates the dynamics of entanglement and explores some geometrical characteristics of the trajectories in state space, in four-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ)-and W-type states, coupled to common and independent classical random telegraph noise (RTN) sources. It is shown from numerical simulations that: (i) the dynamics of entanglement depends drastically not only on the input configuration of the qubits and the presence or absence of memory effects, but also on whether the qubits are coupled to the RTN in a CE or IEs; (ii) a considerable amount of entanglement can be in…
Superconducting quantum technologies require qubit systems whose properties meet several often conflicting requirements, such as long coherence times and high anharmonicity. Here, we provide an engineering framework based on a generalized superconducting qubit model in the flux regime, which abstracts multiple circuit design parameters and thereby supports design optimization across multiple qubit properties. We experimentally investigate a special parameter regime which has both high anharmonicity ($\sim\!1$GHz) and long quantum coherence times ($T_1\!=\!40\!-\!80\,\mathrm{μs}$ and $T_\mathrm…
