There exists a large body of previous work using reduced two-dimensional models of the SOL, which model fluctuations in the drift-plane but approximate parallel transport with effective loss terms. Full size three-dimensional simulations of SOL turbulence in experimental geometries are now possible, but are far more computationally expensive than 2D models. We therefore use a flux-tube geometry model of the scrape-off layer to compare the results of 2D simulations to 3D simulations with a similar setup, looking for systematic differences. Overall there is good agreement in the basic radial profiles, probability distribution functions, and power spectra of fluctuations. However, the average temperature is over-predicted in 2D relative to 3D, and we explain the difference in terms of the effect of geometrical simplifications of devices at low power. Varying geometric parameters, we find that supersonic flow in the divertor leg, which occurs because our simulations do not include neutrals and so represent low-recycling conditions, means that the divertor leg length only has a weak effect on the output. Finally, we examine the effect of altering the magnitude of source and sink terms in 2D, concluding that they cannot easily be used to recreate both the density and temperature profiles observed in 3D simultaneously.
The narrow power decay-length ($λ_q$), recently found in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of inner-wall limited (IWL) discharges in tokamaks, is studied using 3D, flux-driven, global two-fluid turbulence simulations. The formation of the steep plasma profiles measured is found to arise due to radially sheared $\vec{E}\times\vec{B}$ poloidal flows. A complex interaction between sheared flows and outflowing plasma currents regulates the turbulent saturation, determining the transport levels. We quantify the effects of sheared flows, obtaining theoretical estimates in agreement with our non-linear simu…
Two dimensional stochastic time model of scrape-off layer (SOL) turbulent transport is studied. Instability arisen in the system with respect to the stochastic perturbations of both either density or vorticity reveals itself in the strong outward bursts of particle density propagating ballistically across the SOL. The stability and possible stabilization of the cross- field turbulent system depend very much upon the reciprocal correlation time between density and vorticity fluctuations. Pdf of the particle flux for the large magnitudes of flux events can be modelled with a simple discrete time…
This paper studies the turbulent kinetic energy ($k_\perp$) in 2D isothermal electrostatic interchange-dominated ExB drift turbulence in the scrape-off layer and its relation to particle transport. An evolution equation for the former is analytically derived from the underlying turbulence equations. Evaluating this equation shows that the dominant source for the turbulent kinetic energy is due to interchange drive, while the parallel current loss to the sheath constitutes the main sink. Perpendicular transport of the turbulent kinetic energy seems to play a minor role in the balance equation. …
The ${\bm E}\times{\bm B}$ drift motion of charged test particle dynamics in the Scrape Off Layer (SOL)is analyzed to investigate a transport control strategy based on Hamiltonian dynamics. We model SOL turbulence using a 2D non-linear fluid code based on interchange instability which was found to exhibit intermittent dynamics of the particle flux. The effect of a small and appropriate modification of the turbulent electric potential is studied with respect to the chaotic diffusion of test particle dynamics. Over a significant range in the magnitude of the turbulent electrostatic field, a thre…
Turbulent transport of trace impurities impurities in the edge and scrape-off-layer of tokamak fusion plasmas is modelled by three dimensional electromagnetic gyrofluid computations including evolution of plasma profile gradients. The source function of impurity ions is dynamically computed from pre-determined measured and calculated electron impact ionization cross section data. The simulations describe the generation and further passive turbulent E-cross-B advection of the impurities by intermittent fluctuations and coherent filamentary structures (blobs) across the scrape-off-layer.
We demonstrate that cross-field transport in the scrape-off layer (SOL) can be moderately increased by electromagnetic effects in high-beta regimes, resulting in a broader electron heat-flux width on the endplates. This conclusion is taken from full-$f$ electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations of a helical SOL model that roughly approximates the SOL of the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX). The simulations have been performed with the Gkeyll code, which recently became the first code to demonstrate the capability to simulate electromagnetic gyrokinetic turbulence on open magnetic field…
Understanding turbulent transport physics in the tokamak edge and scrape-off layer (SOL) is critical to developing a successful fusion reactor. The dynamics in these regions plays a key role in achieving high fusion performance by determining the edge pedestal that suppresses turbulence in H-mode. Additionally, the survivability of a reactor is set by the heat load to the vessel walls, making it important to understand turbulent spreading of heat as it flows along open magnetic field lines in the SOL. Large-amplitude fluctuations, magnetic X-point geometry, and plasma interactions with materia…
Theory-based scaling laws of the near and far scrape-off layer (SOL) widths are analytically derived for L-mode diverted tokamak discharges by using a two-fluid model. The near SOL pressure and density decay lengths are obtained by leveraging a balance among the power source, perpendicular turbulent transport across the separatrix, and parallel losses at the vessel wall, while the far SOL pressure and density decay lengths are derived by using a model of intermittent transport mediated by filaments. The analytical estimates of the pressure decay length in the near SOL is then compared to the r…
By using a non-local model, fluid simulations can capture kinetic effects in the parallel electron heat-flux better than is possible using flux limiters in the usual diffusive models. Non-local and diffusive models are compared using a test case representative of an ELM crash in the JET SOL, simulated in one dimension. The non-local model shows substantially enhanced electron temperature gradients, which cannot be achieved using a flux limiter. The performance of the implementation, in the BOUT++ framework, is also analysed to demonstrate its suitability for application in three-dimensional si…
The understanding of cross-field transport is crucial in order to optimize the properties of magnetic confinement in modern fusion devices. In this work, a two-dimensional, simplified model is used to study the turbulent dynamics in the region of the scrape-off layer. We show how the numerical model, based on the reduced Braginskii equations, is able to describe the formation and the evolution over time of blobs structures. We study these complex dynamics by using both classical Eulerian analysis and the Lagrangian approach, by varying the ambient conditions of the plasma. We have found that b…
Modelling the scrape-off layer of a stellarator is challenging due to the complex magnetic 3D geometry. The here presented study analyses simulations of the scrape-off layer (SOL) of the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) using the EMC3-EIRENE code for the magnetic standard configuration. Comparing with experimental observations, the transport model is validated. Based on the experimentally observed strike line width, the anomalous transport coefficients, used as input to the code are determined to around $0.2\,$m$^2/$s. This is however in disagreement with upstream measurements, where such sm…
The scrape-off layer power width (λ_q) is an important parameter for characterizing the divertor heat loads. Many experimental, theoretical, and numerical studies have been performed in recent years. In this paper, a 2D electrostatic turbulence code, BOUT-HESEL, has been upgraded to simulate H-mode plasmas for the first time. The code is validated against the previous implementation and the experiments. The simulated λ_q is found to agree quite well with the Eich scaling for the EAST H-mode discharge. The code is utilized to simulate the ITER 15MA baseline scenario. The ITER simulation reveals…
In a wide variety of natural and laboratory magnetized plasmas, filaments appear as a result of interchange instability. These convective structures substantially enhance transport in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field. According to filament models, their propagation may follow different regimes depending on the parallel closure of charge conservation. This is of paramount importance in magnetic fusion plasmas, as high collisionality in the scrape-off layer may trigger a regime transition leading to strongly enhanced perpendicular particle fluxes. This work reports for the first…
Understanding the multi-scale neoclassical and turbulence physics in the edge region (pedestal + scrape-off layer) is required in order to reliably predict performance in future fusion devices. We explore turbulent characteristics in the edge region from a multiscale neoclassical and turbulent XGC1 gyrokinetic simulation in a DIII-D like tokamak geometry, here excluding neutrals and collisions. For an H-mode type plasma with steep pedestal, it is found that the electron density fluctuations increase towards the separatrix, and stay high well into the SOL, reaching a maximum value of $δn_e / \b…
The turbulence observed in the scrape-off-layer of a tokamak is often characterized by intermittent events of bursty nature, a feature which raises concerns about the prediction of heat loads on the physical boundaries of the device. It appears thus necessary to delve into the statistical properties of turbulent physical fields such as density, electrostatic potential and temperature, focusing on the mathematical expression of tails of the probability distribution functions. The method followed here is to generate statistical information from time-traces of the plasma density stemming from Bra…
In an effort to understand the fundamental physics of turbulent transport of particles and heat in a tokamak, the floating potential fluctuations in the the scrape-off layer plasma of ohmically heated ADITYA tokamak are analysed for self-similarity using distribution function approach. It is observed that the distribution function of a sum of n data points converges to a Levy distribution of scale index, alpha=1.111 for n < 40 and alpha=2.0 for larger n. In both scaling ranges, the edge fluctuation is self-similar. This observation is backed by several supporting evidences. The results indicat…
Turbulent dynamics in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of magnetic fusion devices is intermittent with large fluctuations in density and pressure. Therefore, a model is required that allows perturbations of similar or even larger magnitude to the time-averaged background value. The fluid-turbulence code GRILLIX is extended to such a global model, which consistently accounts for large variation in plasma parameters. Derived from the drift reduced Braginskii equations, the new GRILLIX model includes electromagnetic and electron-thermal dynamics, retains global parametric dependencies and the Boussines…

The nature of the turbulent energy transfer rate is studied using direct numerical simulations of weakly collisional space plasmas. This is done comparing results obtained from hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell simulations of colissionless plasmas, Hall-magnetohydrodynamics, and Landau fluid models reproducing low-frequency kinetic effects, such as the Landau damping. In this partially developed turbulent scenario, estimates of the local and global scaling properties of different energy channels are obtained using a proxy of the local energy transfer (LET). This approach provides information on the struct…
We study the influence of the shape of the plasma container on the dynamics of the Reversed Field Pinch (RFP). The geometries we consider are periodic cylinders with elliptical and circular-shaped cross-sections. Numerical simulations of fully nonlinear visco-resistive magnetohydrodynamics are carried out to illustrate how the plasma dynamics are affected by shaping. It is shown that independent of the plasma shape, the quantity $β$, comparing the hydrodynamic pressure to the magnetic pressure, decreases for increasing values of the Lundquist number, but the pressure gradient fluctuations rema…

Transport in collisionless plasmas is usually called anomalous, being due to the interaction between the particles and the self-generated turbulence by their collective interactions. Because of its relevance for astrophysical and space plasmas, we explore the excitation of turbulence in current sheets prone to component- or guide-field reconnection, a process not well understood, yet. We analyze the anomalous transport properties by using 2.5D Particle-in-Cell (PiC) code simulations. We split off the mean, slow variation (in contrast to the fast turbulent fluctuations) of the macroscopic obser…

Computer vision and machine learning tools offer an exciting new way for automatically analyzing and categorizing information from complex computer simulations. Here we design an ensemble machine learning framework that can independently and robustly categorize and dissect simulation data output contents of turbulent flow patterns into distinct structure catalogues. The segmentation is performed using an unsupervised clustering algorithm, which segments physical structures by grouping together similar pixels in simulation images. The accuracy and robustness of the resulting segment region boun…
Recent observations from {\em RHESSI} have revealed that the number of non-thermal electrons in the coronal part of a flaring loop can exceed the number of electrons required to explain the hard X-ray-emitting footpoints of the same flaring loop. Such sources cannot, therefore, be interpreted on the basis of the standard collisional transport model, in which electrons stream along the loop while losing their energy through collisions with the ambient plasma; additional physical processes, to either trap or scatter the energetic electrons, are required. Motivated by this and other observations …
After introduction we focus on: the transport of charged particles, the acceleration of ions at shocks, and the acceleration of electrons at shocks. Chapter 2 studies the propagation of solar energetic particles(SEPs) in turbulent magnetic fields. Particle trajectories in turbulent magnetic fields are numerically integrated. The turbulence includes a Kolmogorov-like power spectrum containing a broad range of scales. Small-scale variations in particle intensities(dropouts) and velocity dispersions can be reproduced. The result gives a constraint on the error of onset analysis for inferring SEP …
Progress toward understanding principles of nonlinear growth and saturation of large scale magnetic fields has emerged from comparison of theoretical models that incorporate the evolution of magnetic helicity with numerical simulations for problems that are more idealized than expected in astrophysical circumstances, but still fully non-linear. We carry out a new comparison of this sort for the magnetic field growth from forced isotropic helical turbulence in a periodic box. Previous comparisons be- tween analytic theory and simulations of this problem have shown that a two-scale model compare…
