We show that molecular spin qudits provide an ideal platform to simulate the quantum dynamics of photon fields strongly interacting with matter. The basic unit of the proposed molecular quantum simulator can be realized by a simple dimer of a spin 1/2 and a spin $S$ transition metal ion, solely controlled by microwave pulses. The spin $S$ ion is exploited to encode the photon field in a flexible architecture, which enables the digital simulation of a wide range of spin-boson models much more efficiently than by using a multi-qubit register. The effectiveness of our proposal is demonstrated by numerical simulations using realistic molecular parameters, whose prerequisites delineating possible chemical approaches are also discussed.
We study photon-mediated interactions between molecular spin qudits in the dispersive regime of operation. We derive from a microscopic model the effective interaction between molecular spins, including their crystal field anisotropy (i.e., the presence of non-linear spin terms) and their multi-level structure. Finally, we calculate the long time dynamics for a pair of interacting molecular spins using the method of multiple scales analysis. This allows to find the set of 2-qudit gates that can be realized for a specific choice of molecular spins and to determine the time required for their im…
We demonstrate that the [Yb(trensal)] molecule is a prototypical coupled electronic qubit-nuclear qudit system. The combination of noise-resilient nuclear degrees of freedom and large reduction of nutation time induced by electron-nuclear mixing enables coherent manipulation of this qudit by radio-frequency pulses. Moreover, the multi-level structure of the qudit is exploited to encode and operate a qubit with embedded basic quantum error correction.
We show that [VO(TPP)] (vanadyl tetraphenylporphyrinate) is a promising system suitable to implement quantum computation algorithms based on encoding information in multi-level (qudit) units. Indeed, it embeds an electronic spin 1/2 coupled through hyperfine interaction to a nuclear spin 7/2, both characterized by remarkable coherence. We demonstrate this by an extensive broadband nuclear magnetic resonance study, which allow us to characterize the nuclear spin-Hamiltonian and to measure the spin dephasing time as a function of the magnetic field. In addition, we combine targeted measurements …
Molecular Nanomagnets may enable the implementation of qudit-based quantum error-correction codes which exploit the many spin levels naturally embedded in a single molecule, a promising step towards scalable quantum processors. To fully realize the potential of this approach, a microscopic understanding of the errors corrupting the quantum information encoded in a molecular qudit is essential, together with the development of tailor-made quantum error correction strategies. We address these central points by first studying dephasing effects on the molecular spin qudit produced by the interacti…
We study the physics of a magnetic molecule described by a "giant" spin with multiple ($d > 2$) spin states interacting with the quantized cavity field produced by a superconducting resonator. By means of the input-output formalism, we derive an expression for the output modes in the dispersive regime of operation. It includes the effect of magnetic anisotropy, which makes different spin transitions addressable. We find that the measurement of the cavity transmission allows to uniquely determine the spin state of the qudits. We discuss, from an effective Hamiltonian perspective, the conditions…
As an extension of two-level quantum bits (qubits), multilevel systems, so-called qudits, where d represents the Hilbert space dimension, have been predicted to reduce the number of iterations in quantum computation algorithms. This has been tested in the well-known [TbPc2]0 SMM, which allowed the implementation of the Grover algorithm in a single molecular unit. In the quest for molecular systems possessing an increased number of accessible nuclear spin states, we explore herein a dimeric Tb2-SMM via single crystal μ-SQUID measurements at sub-Kelvin temperatures. We observe ferromagnetic inte…
We demonstrate, numerically, the possibility of manipulating the spin states of molecular nanomagnets with shaped microwave pulses designed with quantum optimal control theory techniques. The state-to-state or full gate transformations can be performed in this way in shorter times than using simple monochromatic resonant pulses. This enhancement in the operation rates can therefore mitigate the effect of decoherence. The optimization protocols and their potential for practical implementations are illustrated by simulations performed for a simple molecular cluster hosting a single Gd$^{3+}$ ion…
Presently, one of the most ambitious technological goals is the development of devices working under the laws of quantum mechanics. One prominent target is the quantum computer, which would allow the processing of information at quantum level for purposes not achievable with even the most powerful computer resources. The large-scale implementation of quantum information would be a game changer for current technology, because it would allow unprecedented parallelised computation and secure encryption based on the principles of quantum superposition and entanglement. Currently, there are several…

We present a "hybrid quantum repeater" protocol for the long-distance distribution of atomic entangled states beyond qubits. In our scheme, imperfect noisy entangled pairs of two qudits, i.e., two discrete-variable $d$-level systems, each of, in principle, arbitrary dimension $d$, are initially shared between the intermediate stations of the channel. This is achieved via local, sufficiently strong light-matter interactions, involving optical coherent states and their transmission after these interactions, and optical measurements on the transmitted field modes, especially (but not restricted t…
Monopoles play a center role in gauge theories and topological matter. There are two fundamental types of monopoles in physics: vector monopoles and tensor monopoles. Examples of vector monopoles include the Dirac monopole in 3D and Yang monopole in 5D, which have been extensively studied and observed in condensed matter or artificial systems. However, tensor monopoles are less studied, and their observation has not been reported. Here we experimentally construct a tunable spin-1 Hamiltonian to generate a tensor monopole and then measure its unique features with superconducting quantum circuit…
Artificial magnetic molecules are suitable hosts to one or several spin qubits, which could then implement small-scale algorithms. In order to become of practical use, such molecular spin processors need to increase the dimension $d$ of the available computational space and fulfill the highly demanding conditions that warrant universal operations. Here, we design, synthesize and fully characterize dissymetric molecular dimers hosting either one or two Gd(III) ions. The strong sensitivity of Gd(III) magnetic anisotropy to the symmetry of its local coordination gives rise to different zero-field…

A family of quantum Hamiltonians is said to be universal if any other finite-dimensional Hamiltonian can be approximately encoded within the low-energy space of a Hamiltonian from that family. If the encoding is efficient, universal families of Hamiltonians can be used as universal analogue quantum simulators and universal quantum computers, and the problem of approximately determining the ground-state energy of a Hamiltonian from a universal family is QMA-complete. One natural way to categorise Hamiltonians into families is in terms of the interactions they are built from. Here we prove unive…

We explore how to encode more than a qubit in vanadyl porphyrin molecules hosting a electronic spin 1/2 coupled to a nuclear spin 7/2. The spin Hamiltonian and its parameters, as well as the spin dynamics, have been determined via a combination of electron paramagnetic resonance, heat capacity, magnetization and on-chip magnetic spectroscopy experiments performed on single crystals. We find low temperature spin coherence times of micro-seconds and spin relaxation times longer than a second. For sufficiently strong magnetic fields (B larger than 0.1 T, corresponding to resonance frequencies of …
$\mathbb{Z}_d$ Parafermions are exotic non-Abelian quasiparticles generalizing Majorana fermions, which correspond to the case $d=2$. In contrast to Majorana fermions, braiding of parafermions with $d>2$ allows to perform an entangling gate. This has spurred interest in parafermions and a variety of condensed matter systems have been proposed as potential hosts for them. In this work, we study the computational power of braiding parafermions more systematically. We make no assumptions on the underlying physical model but derive all our results from the algebraical relations that define parafer…
Quantum systems with a finite number of states at all times have been a primary element of many physical models in nuclear and elementary particle physics, as well as in condensed matter physics. Today, however, due to a practical demand in the area of developing quantum technologies, a whole set of novel tasks for improving our understanding of the structure of finite-dimensional quantum systems has appeared. In the present article we will concentrate on one aspect of such studies related to the problem of explicit parameterization of state space of an $N$-level quantum system. More precisely…
The Talbot effect in quantum physics is known to produce intricate patterns in the probability distribution of a particle, known as "quantum carpets", corresponding to the revival and replication of the initial wave function. Recently, it was shown that one can encode a $D$-level qudit, in such a way that the Talbot effect can be used to process the $D$-dimensional quantum information [Far\'ıas et al, PRA (2015)]. Here we introduce a scheme to produce free-propagating "entangled quantum carpets" with pairs of photons produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. First we introduce an opt…
We show that several qubits can be integrated in a single magnetic ion, using its internal electronic spin states with energies tuned by a suitably chosen molecular environment. This approach is illustrated with a nearly-isotropic Gd(III) ion entrapped in a polyoxometalate molecule. Experiments with microwave technologies, either three dimensional cavities or quantum superconducting circuits, show that this magnetic molecule possesses the number of spin states and the set of coherently addressable transitions connecting these states that are needed to perform a universal three-qubit processor …

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion in quantum optics is an invaluable resource for the realization of high-dimensional qudits with spatial modes of light. One of the main open challenges is how to directly generate a desirable qudit state in the SPDC process. This problem can be addressed through advanced computational learning methods; however, due to difficulties in modeling the SPDC process by a fully differentiable algorithm that takes into account all interaction effects, progress has been limited. Here, we overcome these limitations and introduce a physically-constrained and differen…
Nuclear spins are candidates to encode qubits or qudits due to their isolation from magnetic noise and potentially long coherence times. However, their weak coupling to external stimuli makes them hard to integrate into circuit-QED architectures, the leading technology for solid-state quantum processors. Here, we study the coupling of $^{173}$Yb(III) nuclear spin states in an [Yb(trensal)] molecule to superconducting cavities. Experiments have been performed on magnetically diluted single crystals placed on the inductors of lumped-element $LC$ superconducting resonators with characteristic fre…

The study of molecular physics using ultracold gases has provided a unique probe into the fundamental properties of nature and offers new tools for quantum technologies. In this article we outline how the use of a space environment to study ultracold molecular physics opens opportunities for 1) exploring ultra-low energy regimes of molecular physics with high efficiency, 2) providing a toolbox of capabilities for fundamental physics, and 3) enabling new classes of matter-wave interferometers with applications in precision measurement for fundamental and many-body physics.
Ultrafast chemical reactions are difficult to simulate because they involve entangled, many-body wavefunctions whose computational complexity grows rapidly with molecular size. In photochemistry, the breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation further complicates the problem by entangling nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom. Here, we show that analog quantum simulators can efficiently simulate molecular dynamics using commonly available bosonic modes to represent molecular vibrations. Our approach can be implemented in any device with a qudit controllably coupled to bosonic oscillato…
We extend the theory of matter-wave interferometry of point-like particles to non-spherical objects by taking the orientational degrees of freedom into account. In particular, we derive the grating transformation operator, that maps the impinging state onto the outgoing state, for a general, orientation-dependent interaction potential between the grating and the molecule. The grating operator is then worked out for the diffraction of symmetric top molecules from standing light waves, and the resulting interference pattern is calculated in the near-field. This allows us to identify a signature …
We propose dissociation of cold diatomic molecules as a source of atom pairs with highly correlated (entangled) positions and momenta, approximating the original quantum state introduced by Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen (EPR) [Phys. Rev. 47, 777 (1935)]. Wavepacket teleportation is shown to be achievable by its collision with one of the EPR correlated atoms and manipulation of the other atom in the pair.
We investigate the quantum superchemistry or Bose-enhanced atom-molecule conversions in a coherent output coupler of matter waves, as a simple generalization of the two-color photo-association. The stimulated effects of molecular output step and atomic revivals are exhibited by steering the rf output couplings. The quantum noise-induced molecular damping occurs near a total conversion in a levitation trap. This suggests a feasible two-trap scheme to make a stable coherent molecular beam.
According to the Schiff theorem nuclear electric dipole moment (EDM) is completely shielded in a neutral atom by electrons. This makes a static nuclear electric dipole moment (EDM) unobservable. Interaction with the axion dark matter field generates nuclear EDM $d=d_0 \cos (ωt)$ oscillating with the frequency $ω= m_a c^2/\hbar$ . This EDM generates atomic EDM proportional to $ω^2$. This effect is strongly enhanced in molecules since nuclei move slowly and do not produce as efficient screening of oscillating nuclear EDM as electrons do. An additional strong enhancement comes due to a small ener…
