The conventional classification of electrolyte solutions as 'strong' or 'weak' accounts for their charge transport properties, but neglects their mass transport properties, and is not readily applicable to highly concentrated solutions. Here, we use the Onsager transport formalism in combination with linear response theory to attain a more general classification taking into account both charge and mass transport properties. To this end, we define a molar mass transport coefficient Λ_mass, which is related to equilibrium center-of-mass fluctuations of the mobile ions and which is the mass-transport analogue of the molar ionic conductivity Λ_charge. Three classes of electrolyte solution are then distinguished: (i) 'Strong' electrolytes with 4Λ_mass \approx Λ_charge; (ii) 'weak charge transport electrolytes' with Λ_charge << 4Λ_mass; and (iii) 'weak mass transport electrolytes' with 4Λ_mass << Λ_charge. While classes (i) and (ii) encompass the classical 'strong' and 'weak' electrolytes, respectively, many highly concentrated electrolytes fall into class (iii) and thus exhibit transport properties clearly distinct from classical 'strong' and 'weak' electrolytes.
By using the generalized version of the Shell Theorem analytical equations are derived to calculate the electric energy of a charged sphere and the field energy of the electrolyte inside and around the sphere. These electric energies are calculated as a function of the ion concentration of the electrolyte. The work needed to build up the charged sphere (i.e. the total charge-charge interaction energy) decreases with increasing ion concentration of the electrolyte because of the screening effect of the electrolyte on the charge-charge interaction. The energy needed to build up the charged spher…
We study, using Density Functional theory and Monte Carlo simulations, aqueous electrolyte solutions between charged infinite planar surfaces, in a contact with a bulk salt reservoir. In agreement with recent experimental observations [Z. Luo et al., Nat. Comm. 6, 6358 (2015)], we find that the confined electrolyte lacks local charge neutrality. We show that a Density Functional Theory (DFT) based on a bulk- HNC expansion properly accounts for strong electrostatic correlations and allows us to accurately calculate the ionic density profiles between the charged surfaces, even for electrolytes c…
We present an extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulation study of the lithium ion transport in ternary polymer electrolytes consisting of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), lithium-bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (LiTFSI) and the ionic liquid N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (PYR13TFSI). In particular, we focus on two different strategies by which the ternary electrolytes can be devised, namely by (a) adding the ionic liquid to PEO20LiTFSI, and (b) substituting the PEO chains in PEO20LiTFSI by the ionic liquid. In order to grasp the changes of the overall lithium tra…
We theoretically study the size effect of water molecule clusters not only on electrostatic interaction between two charged surfaces in an aqueous electrolyte but also on electroosmotic transport in a nanofluidic channel. Applying a free energy based mean-field approach accounting for different sizes of ions and water molecule clusters, we derive a set of coupled equations to compute electrostatic and electroosmotic properties between charged surfaces. We verify that the smaller the size of a water cluster, the stronger the electroosmotic transport in nanofluidic channels. In addition, we find…
In the present work, we study an electrolyte solution confined between planar surfaces with nonopatterned charged domains, which has been connected to a bulk ionic reservoir. The system is investigated through an improved Monte Carlo (MC) simulation method, suitable for simulation of electrolytes in the presence of modulated surface charge distributions. We also employ a linear approach in the spirit of the classical Debye-Hückel approximation, which allows one to obtain explicit expressions for the averaged potentials, ionic profiles, effective surface interactions and the net ionic charge co…
The replica Ornstein-Zernike equations for an electrolyte adsorbed in a charged, disordered matrix were applied to a model, where both subsystems consisted of points carrying a single (positive or negative) charge. While the system as a whole was electroneutral, each of the subsytems had a net charge. The results of this study are compared with the ones previously obtained, where the interactions in such a system were considered to be the same as in the case of electroneutral subsystems.
A microscopic theory for cation diffusion in polymer electrolytes is presented. Based on a thorough analysis of molecular dynamics simulations on PEO with LiBF$_4$ the mechanisms of cation dynamics are characterised. Cation jumps between polymer chains can be identified as renewal processes. This allows us to obtain an explicit expression for the lithium ion diffusion constant D_{Li} by invoking polymer specific properties such as the Rouse dynamics. This extends previous phenomenological and numerical approaches. In particular, the chain length dependence of D_{Li} can be predicted and compar…
We present a theory that enables us to calculate the effective surface charge of colloidal particles and to efficiently obtain titration curves for different salt concentrations. The theory accounts for the shift of pH of solution due to the presence of 1:1 electrolyte. It also accounts self-consistently for the electrostatic potential produced by the deprotonated surface groups. To examine the accuracy of the theory we have performed extensive reactive Monte Carlo simulations, which show excellent agreement between theory and simulations without any adjustable parameters.
The lithium transport mechanism in ternary polymer electrolytes, consisting of PEO/LiTFSI and various fractions of the ionic liquid N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide, are investigated by means of MD simulations. This is motivated by recent experimental findings [Passerini et al., Electrochim. Acta 2012, 86, 330-338], which demonstrated that these materials display an enhanced lithium mobility relative to their binary counterpart PEO/LiTFSI. In order to grasp the underlying microscopic scenario giving rise to these observations, we employ an analytical, Rouse-based…
The structure of dilute electrolyte solutions close to a surface carrying a spatially inhomogeneous surface charge distribution is investigated by means of classical density functional theory (DFT) within the approach of fundamental measure theory (FMT). For electrolyte solutions the influence of these inhomogeneities is particularly strong because the corresponding characteristic length scale is the Debye length, which is large compared to molecular sizes. Here a fully three-dimensional investigation is performed, which accounts explicitly for the solvent particles, and thus provides insight …
The three-phase contact line formed by the intersection of a liquid-vapor interface of an electrolyte solution with a charged planar substrate is studied in terms of classical density functional theory applied to a lattice model. The influence of the substrate charge density and of the ionic strength of the solution on the intrinsic structure of the three-phase contact line and on the corresponding line tension is analyzed. We find a negative line tension for all values of the surface charge density and of the ionic strength considered. The strength of the line tension decreases upon decreasin…
We calculate the force between two spherical metal nanoparticles of charge Q 1 and Q 2 in a dilute 1:1 electrolyte solution. Numerically solving the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann equation, we find that metal nanoparticles with the same sign of charge can attract one another. This is fundamentally different from what is found for like-charged, non-polarizable, colloidal particles, the two body interaction potential for which is always repulsive inside a dilute 1:1 electrolyte. Furthermore, existence of like-charge attraction between spherical metal nanoparticles is even more surprising in view o…
A variational theory is developed to study electrolyte solutions, composed of interacting point-like ions in a solvent, in the presence of dielectric discontinuities and charges at the boundaries. Three important and non-linear electrostatic effects induced by these interfaces are taken into account: surface charge induced electrostatic field, solvation energies due to the ionic cloud, and image charge repulsion. Our variational equations thus go beyond the mean-field theory. The influence of salt concentration, ion valency, dielectric jumps, and surface charge is studied in two geometries. i)…
We study electrostatic mechanisms of destabilization of highly asymmetric electrolytes. For this purpose, we perform primitive model Monte Carlo simulations of charged macroions immersed in multivalent salt solution. At low salt concentration, the macroion effective charge is reduced due to multivalent counterion adsorption. At high salt concentrations, the macroions become overcharged so that their apparent charge has the opposite sign to the stoichiometric one. The inverted charge is growing up to a saturation value upon further increasing the salinity. The system remains stable at low as we…
Grand canonical simulations designed to resolve critical universality classes are reported for $z$:1 hard-core electrolyte models with diameter ratios $λ{=} a_+/a_- {\lesssim} 6$. For $z {=} 1$ Ising-type behavior prevails. Unbiased estimates of $T_c(λ)$ are within 1% of previous (biased) estimates but the critical densities are $\sim $5 % lower. Ising character is also established for the 2:1 and 3:1 equisized models, along with critical amplitudes and improved $T_c$ estimates. For $z {=} 3$, however, strong finite-size effects reduce the confidence level although classical and O$(n {\geq} 3)…
Dynamic processes in dispersions of charged spherical particles are of importance both in fundamental science, and in technical and bio-medical applications. There exists a large variety of charged-particles systems, ranging from nanometer-sized electrolyte ions to micron-sized charge-stabilized colloids. We review recent advances in theoretical methods for the calculation of linear transport coefficients in concentrated particulate systems, with the focus on hydrodynamic interactions and electrokinetic effects. Considered transport properties are the dispersion viscosity, self- and collective…
We study the ionic equilibria and interactions of neutral semi-permeable spherical shells immersed in electrolyte solutions, including polyions. Although the shells are uncharged, only one type of ions of the electrolyte can permeate them, thus leading to a steric charge separation in the system. This gives rise to a charge accumulation inside the shell and a build up of concentration- dependent shell potential, which converts into a disjoining pressure between the neighboring shells. These are quantified by using the Poisson-Boltzmann and integral equations theory. In particular, we show that…
The electrostatic screening length predicted by Debye-Hückel theory decreases with increasing ionic strength, but recent experiments have found that the screening length can instead increase in concentrated electrolytes. This phenomenon, referred to as underscreening, is believed to result from ion-ion correlations and short-range forces such as excluded volume interactions among ions. We use Brownian Dynamics to simulate a version of the Restrictive Primitive Model for electrolytes over a wide range of ion concentrations, ionic strengths, and ion excluded volume radii for binary electrolytes.…
The Poisson-Boltzmann equation for a strongly charged plate inside a generic charge-asymmetric electrolyte is solved using the method of asymptotic matching. Both near field and far field asymptotic behaviors of the potential are systematically analyzed. Using these expansions, the renormalized surface charge density is obtained as an asymptotic series in terms of the bare surface charge density.
We discuss the thermoelectric properties of a locally heated micron-size volume in an electrolyte solution. We find that such a hot spot carries a net charge Q which, for an excess temperature of 10 K, may attain hundreds of elementary charges. The corresponding Seebeck electric field E increases linearly with the radius r inside the heated area, then goes through a maximum, and decays as 1/r2 at larger distances. Our results could be relevant to optothermal actuation of electrolytes and colloidal suspensions.
We studied ion concentration profiles and the charge density gradient caused by electrode reactions in weak electrolytes by using the Poisson--Nernst--Planck equations without assuming charge neutrality. In weak electrolytes, only a small fraction of molecules is ionized in bulk. Ion concentration profiles depend on not only ion transport but also the ionization of molecules. We considered the ionization of molecules and ion association in weak electrolytes and obtained analytical expressions for ion densities, electrostatic potential profiles, and ion currents. We found the case that the tota…
We study the adsorption of primitive model electrolytes into a layered slit system using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The slit system contains a series of charged membranes. The ions are forbidden from the membranes, while they are allowed to be adsorbed into the slits between the membranes. We focus on the electrical properties of the slit system. We show concentration, charge, electric field, and electrical potential profiles. We show that the potential difference between the slit system and the bulk phase is mainly due to the double layers formed at the boundaries of the slit sy…
In this study the Singlet Reference Interaction Site Model (SRISM) is employed to the study of the electrode charge dependence of the capacitance of a planar electric double layer using the primitive model of the double layer for a high density electrolyte that mimics an ionic liquid. The ions are represented by charged hard spheres and the electrode is a uniformly charged flat surface. The capacitance of this model fluid is calculated with the SRISM approach with closures based on the hypernetted chain (HNC) and Kovalenko-Hirata (KH) closures and compared with simulations. As long as the magn…
Ionic liquids are promising candidates for novel electrolytes as they possess large electrochemical and thermodynamic stability and offer a high degree of tunability. As purely-ionic electrolyte without neutral solvent they exhibit characteristic structures near electrified interfaces and in the bulk, both being described theoretically via separate frameworks and methodologies. We present a holistic continuum theory applying to both regions. This transport theory for pure ionic liquids and ionic liquids-mixtures allows the systematic description of the electrolyte evolution. In particular, dyn…
We present (asymptotically) exact expressions for the mobility and electrophoretic mobility of a weakly charged spherical particle in an $1:1$ electrolyte solution. This is done by analytically solving the electro and hydrodynamic equations governing the electric potential and fluid flow with respect to an electric field and a nonelectric force. The resulting formulae are cumbersome, but fully explicit and trivial for computation. In the case of a very small particle compared to the Debye screening length ($R \ll r_D$) our results reproduce proper limits of the classical Debye and Onsager theo…
Ion transport in concentrated electrolytes plays a fundamental role in electrochemical systems such as lithium ion batteries. Nonetheless, the mechanism of transport amid strong ion-ion interactions remains enigmatic. A key question is whether the dynamics of ion transport can be predicted by the local static structure alone, and if so what are the key structural motifs that determine transport. In this paper, we show that machine learning can successfully decompose global conductivity into the spatio-temporal average of local, instantaneous ionic contributions, and relate this ``local molar c…
Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation results are reported for an electric double layer modelled by a planar charged hard wall, anisotropic shape cations, and spherical anions at different electrolyte concentrations and asymmetric valencies. The cations consist of two tangentially tethered hard spheres of the same diameter, $d$. One sphere is charged while the other is neutral. Spherical anions are charged hard spheres of diameter $d$. The ion valency asymmetry 1:2 and 2:1 is considered, with the ions being immersed in a solvent mimicked by a continuum dielectric medium at standard temperatur…
The standard model for diffuse charge phenomena in colloid science, electrokinetics and biology is the Poisson-Boltzmann mean-field theory, which breaks down for multivalent ions and large surface charge densities due to electrostatic correlations. In this paper, we formulate a predictive continuum theory of correlated electrolytes based on two extensions of the Bazant-Storey-Kornyshev (BSK) framework: (i) a physical boundary condition enforcing continuity of the Maxwell stress at a charged interface, which upholds the Contact Theorem for dilute primitive-model electrolytes, and (ii) scaling r…
We develop an analytical theory that accounts for the image and surface charge interactions between a charged dielectric membrane and a DNA molecule translocating through the membrane. Translocation events through neutral carbon-based membranes are driven by a competition between the repulsive DNA-image-charge interactions and the attractive coupling between the DNA segments on the trans and the cis sides of the membrane. The latter effect is induced by the reduction of the coupling by the dielectric membrane. In strong salt solutions where the repulsive image-charge effects dominate the attra…
We present a theory which allows us to calculate the interaction potential between charge-regulated metal nanoparticles inside an acid-electrolyte solution. The approach is based on the recently introduced model of charge regulation which permits us to explicitly -- within a specific microscopic model -- relate the bulk association constant of a weak acid to the surface association constant for the same weak acid adsorption sites. When considering metal nanoparticles we explicitly account for the effect of the induced surface charge in the conducting core. To explore the accuracy of the approx…
Anionic DMPA monolayers spread on LaCl$_3$ solutions reveal strong cation adsorption and a sharp transition to surface overcharging at unexpectedly low bulk salt concentrations. We determine the surface accumulation of La$^{3+}$ with anomalous x-ray reflectivity and find that La$^{3+}$ compensates the lipid surface charge by forming a Stern layer with $\approx 1$ La$^{3+}$ ion per 3 lipids below a critical bulk concentration, $c_t \approx 500 \mathrm{nM}$. Above $c_t$, the surface concentration of La$^{3+}$ increases to a saturation level with $\approx 1$ La$^{3+}$ per lipid, thus implying tha…
We consider laminar flow of incompressible electrolytes in long, straight channels driven by pressure and electro-osmosis. We use a Hilbert space eigenfunction expansion to address the general problem of an arbitrary cross section and obtain general results in linear-response theory for the hydraulic and electrical transport coefficients which satisfy Onsager relations. In the limit of non-overlapping Debye layers the transport coefficients are simply expressed in terms of parameters of the electrolyte as well as the geometrical correction factor for the Hagen-Poiseuille part of the problem. I…
We present a simulation method to study electrolyte solutions in a dielectric slab geometry using a modified 3D Ewald summation. The method is fast and easy to implement, allowing us to rapidly resum an infinite series of image charges. In the weak coupling limit, we also develop a mean-field theory which allows us to predict the ionic distribution between the dielectric charged plates. The agreement between both approaches, theoretical and simulational, is very good, validating both methods. Examples of ionic density profiles in the strong electrostatic coupling limit are also presented. Fina…
In this work, we explore the statistical physics of colloidal particles that interact with electrolytes via ion-specific interactions. Firstly we study particles interact weakly with electrolyte using linear response theory. We find that the mean potential around a particle is linearly determined by the {\em effective charge distribution} of the particle, which depends both on the bare charge distribution and on ion-specific interactions. We also discuss the effective interaction between two such particles and show that, in far field regime, it is bilinear in the effective charge distributions…
Self-consistent theory for concentrated electrolytes is developed. Oscillatory decay of the charge-charge correlation function with the decay length that shows perfect agreement with the experimentally discovered and so far unexplained scaling is obtained. For the density-density correlations, monotonic asymptotic decay with the decay length comparable with the decay length of the charge correlations is found. We show that the correlation lengths in concentrated electrolytes depend crucially on the local variance of the charge density.
While ion transport processes in concentrated electrolytes, e.g. based on ionic liquids (IL), are a subject of intense research, the role of conservation laws and reference frames is still a matter of debate. Employ-ing electrophoretic NMR, we show that momentum conservation, a typical prerequisite in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, is not governing ion transport. Involving density measurements to deter-mine molar volumes of distinct ion species, we propose that conservation of local molar species volumes is the governing constraint for ion transport. The experimentally quantified net vol…
Structure of polymer electrolytes membranes, e.g., Nafion, inside fuel cell catalyst layers has significant impact on the electrochemical activity and transport phenomena that determine cell performance. In those regions, Nafion can be found as an ultra-thin film, coating the catalyst and the catalyst support surfaces. The impact of the hydrophilic/hydrophobic character of these surfaces on the structural formation of the films and, in turn, on transport properties, has not been sufficiently explored yet. Here, we report about classical Molecular Dynamics simulations of hydrated Nafion thin-fi…
The self-consistent field theory (SCFT) is used to study the mean potential near a charged plate inside a $m:-n$ electrolyte. A perturbation series is developed in terms of $g = 4 πb/\ell_{\rm {\scriptscriptstyle DB}}$, where $b, \ell_{\rm{\scriptscriptstyle DB}}$ are Bjerrum length and {\em bare} Debye length respectively. To the zeroth order, we obtain nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann theory. For asymmetric electrolytes ($m \neq n$), the first order (one-loop) correction to mean potential contains a {\em secular term}, which indicates the breakdown of regular perturbation method. Using a renormal…
Extensive Monte Carlo simulations and scaling arguments are used to study the colloidal charge reversal. The critical colloidal surface charge density $σ_c$ at which the reversal first appears is found to depend strongly on the ionic size. We find that $σ_c$ has an inflection point as a function of the electrolyte concentration. The width of the plateau region in the vicinity of the inflection point depends on the temperature and the ionic radius $a$. In agreement with the theoretical predictions it is found that the critical colloidal charge above which the electrophoretic mobility becomes re…
We report the ion transport mechanisms in succinonitrile (SN) loaded solid polymer electrolytes containing polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dissolved lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulphonamide (LiTFSI) salt using molecular dynamics simulations. We investigated the effect of temperature and loading of SN on ion transport and relaxation phenomenon in PEO-LiTFSI electrolytes. It is observed that SN increases the ionic diffusivities in PEO-based solid polymer electrolytes and makes them suitable for battery applications. Interestingly, the diffusion coefficient of TFSI ions is an order of magnitude hig…
In this paper, we study electrostatic properties between two similar or oppositely charged surfaces immersed in an electrolyte solution by using mean-field approach accounting for solvent polarization and non-uniform size effect. Applying a free energy formalism accounting for unequal ion sizes and orientational ordering of water dipoles, we derive coupled and self-consistent equations to calculate electrostatic properties between charged surfaces. Electrostatic properties for similarly charged surfaces depend on counterion size but not coion size. Moreover, electrostatic potential and osmotic…
The theory of transport phenomena in multicomponent electrolyte solutions is presented here through the integration of continuum mechanics, electromagnetism, and non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The governing equations of irreversible thermodynamics, including balance laws, Maxwell's equations, internal entropy production, and linear laws relating the thermodynamic forces and fluxes, are derived. Green-Kubo relations for the transport coefficients connecting electrochemical potential gradients and diffusive fluxes are obtained in terms of the flux-flux time correlations. The relationship betwee…
We consider the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann theory for a single cylindrical or spherical macro-ion in symmetric 1:1, together with asymmetric 1:2 and 2:1 electrolytes. We focus on the regime where $κa $, the ratio of the macro-ion radius $a$ over the inverse Debye length in the bulk electrolyte, is large. Analyzing the structure of the analytical expansion emerging from a multiple scale analysis, we uncover a hidden structure for the electrostatic potential. This structure, which appears after a heuristic resummation, suggests a new and convenient expansion scheme that we present and work out…
We show that topological defects in an ion-doped nematic liquid crystal can be used to manipulate the surface charge distribution on chemically homogeneous, charge-regulating external surfaces, using a minimal theoretical model. In particular, the location and type of the defect encodes the precise distribution of surface charges and the effect is enhanced when the liquid crystal is flexoelectric. We demonstrate the principle for patterned surfaces and charged colloidal spheres. More generally, our results indicate an interesting approach to control surface charges on external surfaces without…
Ion transport in porous media is present in a wealth of technologies, e.g., energy storage devices such as batteries and supercapacitors, and environmental technologies such as electrochemical carbon capture and capacitive deionization. Recent studies on flat-plate electrodes have demonstrated that asymmetries in ion properties, such as valences and diffusivities, lead to intriguing and counter-intuitive physical phenomena. Yet, the consequences of such asymmetries to ion transport have seldom been explored in porous geometries. To bridge this knowledge gap, we conduct a perturbation expansion…
We use molecular dynamics simulations of the primitive model of electrolytes to study the ionic structure in aqueous monovalent electrolyte solutions confined by charged planar interfaces over a wide range of electrolyte concentration, interfacial separation, surface charge density, and ion size. The investigations are inspired by recent experiments that have directly measured the increase in the decay length for highly-concentrated electrolytes with increase in concentration. The behavior of ions in the nanoconfinement created by the interfaces is probed by evaluating the ionic density profil…
