We propose a floating tunable coupler that does not rely on direct qubit-qubit coupling capacitances to achieve the zero-coupling condition. We show that the polarity of the qubit-coupler couplings can be engineered to offset the otherwise constant qubit-qubit coupling and attain the zero-coupling condition when the coupler frequency is above or below the qubit frequencies. We experimentally demonstrate these two operating regimes of the tunable coupler by implementing symmetric and asymmetric configurations of the coupler's superconducting pads with respect to the qubits. Such a floating tunable coupler provides flexibility in designing large-scale quantum processors while reducing the always-on residual couplings.
High-fidelity parametric gates have been demonstrated with superconducting qubits via rf flux modulation of the qubit frequency. The modulation however leads to renormalization of the bare qubit-qubit coupling, thereby reducing the gate speed. Here, we realize a parametric-resonance gate, which is activated by bringing the average frequency of the modulated qubit in resonance with a static-frequency qubit while approximately retaining the bare qubit-qubit coupling. The activation of parametric-resonance gates does not depend on the frequency of modulation, allowing us to choose the modulation …

The implementation of many-body interactions is relevant in various areas of quantum information. We present a superconducting device that implements a strong and tunable three-body interaction between superconducting quantum bits, with vanishing two-body interactions and robustness against noise and circuit parameter variations. These properties are confirmed by calculations based on the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, a two-level model for the coupling circuit, and numerical diagonalization. This circuit behaves as an ideal computational basis ZZZ coupler in a simulated three-qubit quantum a…
Controllable interaction between superconducting qubits is desirable for large-scale quantum computation and simulation. Here, based on a theoretical proposal by Yan et al. [Phys. Rev. Appl. 10, 054061 (2018)] we experimentally demonstrate a simply-designed and flux-controlled tunable coupler with a continuous tunability by adjusting the coupler frequency, which can completely turn off adjacent superconducting qubit coupling. Utilizing the tunable interaction between two qubits via the coupler, we implement a different type of controlled-phase (CZ) gate with 'dynamically decoupled regime', whi…

We propose a scheme of tunable coupler based on quarter-wave resonator for scalable quantum integrated circuits. The open end of the T-type resonator is capacitively coupled to two Xmon qubits, while another end is an asymmetric dc-SQUID which dominates the inductive energy of coupler resonator. The dc-Current applied through the flux bias line could change the magnetic flux inside the dc-SQUID, so the frequency of coupler resonator can be effectively tuned and the qubit-qubit coupling can be totally switched off. As the increase of junction asymmetry for the dc-SQUID, the coupling of SQUID's …
High-fidelity two-qubit gates at scale are a key requirement to realize the full promise of quantum computation and simulation. The advent and use of coupler elements to tunably control two-qubit interactions has improved operational fidelity in many-qubit systems by reducing parasitic coupling and frequency crowding issues. Nonetheless, two-qubit gate errors still limit the capability of near-term quantum applications. The reason, in part, is the existing framework for tunable couplers based on the dispersive approximation does not fully incorporate three-body multi-level dynamics, which is e…
High fidelity two-qubit gates are fundamental for scaling up the superconducting number. We use two qubits coupled via a frequency-tunable coupler which can adjust the coupling strength, and demonstrate the CZ gate using two different schemes, adiabatic and diabatic methods. The Clifford based Randomized Benchmarking (RB) method is used to assess and optimize the CZ gate fidelity. The fidelity of adiabatic and diabatic CZ gates are 99.53(8)% and 98.72(2)%, respectively. We also analyze the errors induced by the decoherence. Comparing to 30 ns duration time of adiabatic CZ gate, the duration ti…

High-fidelity two-qubits gates are essential for the realization of large-scale quantum computation and simulation. Tunable coupler design is used to reduce the problem of parasitic coupling and frequency crowding in many-qubit systems and thus thought to be advantageous. Here we design a extensible 5-qubit system in which center transmon qubit can couple to every four near-neighbor qubit via a capacitive tunable coupler and experimentally demonstrate high-fidelity controlled-phase (CZ) gate by manipulating center qubit and one near-neighbor qubit. Speckle purity benchmarking (SPB) and cross e…
The development of high-fidelity two-qubit quantum gates is essential for digital quantum computing. Here, we propose and realize an all-microwave parametric Controlled-Z (CZ) gates by coupling strength modulation in a superconducting Transmon qubit system with tunable couplers. After optimizing the design of the tunable coupler together with the control pulse numerically, we experimentally realized a 100 ns CZ gate with high fidelity of 99.38%$ \pm$0.34% and the control error being 0.1%. We note that our CZ gates are not affected by pulse distortion and do not need pulse correction, {providin…
Parasitic crosstalk in superconducting quantum devices is a leading limitation for quantum gates. We demonstrate the suppression of static ZZ crosstalk in a two-qubit, two-coupler superconducting circuit, where the frequency of a tunable coupler can be adjusted such that the ZZ interaction from each coupler destructively interfere. We verify the crosstalk elimination with simultaneous randomized benchmarking, and use a parametrically activated iSWAP interaction to achieve a Bell state preparation fidelity of 98.5% and a $\sqrt{\textrm{iSWAP}}$ gate fidelity of 94.8% obtained via quantum proces…
Superconducting fluxonium qubits provide a promising alternative to transmons on the path toward large-scale superconductor-based quantum computing due to their better coherence and larger anharmonicity. A major challenge for multi-qubit fluxonium devices is the experimental demonstration of a scalable crosstalk-free multi-qubit architecture with high fidelity single-qubit and two-qubit gates, single-shot readout and state initialization. Here, we present a two-qubit fluxonium-based quantum processor with a tunable coupler element following our theoretical proposal [DOI: 10.1063/5.0064800]. We…
We theoretically analyze a scheme for fast stabilization of arbitrary qubit states with high fidelities, extending a protocol recently demonstrated experimentally [Lu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 150502 (2017)]. That experiment utilized red and blue sideband transitions in a system composed of a fluxonium qubit, a low-Q LC-oscillator, and a coupler enabling us to tune the interaction between them. Under parametric modulations of the coupling strength, the qubit can be steered into any desired pure or mixed single-qubit state. For realistic circuit parameters, we predict that stabilization can…

For a variety of superconducting qubits, tunable interactions are achieved through mutual inductive coupling to a coupler circuit containing a nonlinear Josephson element. In this paper we derive the general interaction mediated by such a circuit under the Born-Oppenheimer Approximation. This interaction naturally decomposes into a classical part, with origin in the classical circuit equations, and a quantum part, associated with the coupler's zero-point energy. Our result is non-perturbative in the qubit-coupler coupling strengths and in the coupler nonlinearity. This can lead to significant …

The addition of tunable couplers to superconducting quantum architectures offers significant advantages for scaling compared to fixed coupling approaches. In principle, tunable couplers allow for exact cancellation of qubit-qubit coupling through the interference of two parallel coupling pathways between qubits. However, stray microwave couplings can introduce additional pathways which complicate the interference effect. Here we investigate the primary spectator induced errors of the bus below qubit (BBQ) architecture in a six qubit device. We identify the key design parameters which inhibit i…

The prospect of computational hardware with quantum advantage relies critically on the quality of quantum gate operations. Imperfect two-qubit gates is a major bottleneck for achieving scalable quantum information processors. Here, we propose a generalizable and extensible scheme for a two-qubit coupler switch that controls the qubit-qubit coupling by modulating the coupler frequency. Two-qubit gate operations can be implemented by operating the coupler in the dispersive regime, which is non-invasive to the qubit states. We investigate the performance of the scheme by simulating a universal tw…
Photonic routing is a key building block of many optical applications challenging its development. We report a 2$\times$2 photonic coupler with splitting ratio switchable by a low-voltage electronic signal with 10~GHz bandwidth and tens of nanoseconds latency. The coupler can operate at any splitting ratio ranging from 0:100 to 100:0 with the extinction ratio of 26 dB in optical bandwidth of 1.3 THz. We show sub-nanosecond switching between arbitrary coupling regimes including balanced 50:50 beam splitter, 0:100 switch, and a photonic tap. The core of the device is based on Mach-Zehnder interf…
Tunable two-qubit couplers offer an avenue to mitigate errors in multiqubit superconducting quantum processors. However, most couplers operate in a narrow frequency band and target specific couplings, such as the spurious $ZZ$ interaction. We introduce a superconducting coupler that alleviates these limitations by suppressing all two-qubit interactions with an exponentially large on-off ratio and without the need for fine-tuning. Our approach is based on a bus mode supplemented by an ancillary nonlinear resonator mode. Driving the ancillary mode leads to a coupler-state-dependent field displac…
