Very high applied pressure induces superconductivity with the transition temperature ($T_c$) exceeding 19 K in elemental yttrium, but relatively little is known about the nature of that superconductivity. From point-contact spectroscopy (PCS) measurements in a diamond anvil cell (DAC), a strong enhancement in the differential conductance is revealed near the zero-biased voltage owing to Andreev reflection, a hallmark of the superconducting (SC) phase. Analysis of the PCS spectra based on the extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) model indicates two SC gaps at 48.6 GPa, where the large gap $Δ_L$ is 3.63 meV and the small gap $Δ_S$ is 0.46 meV. When scaled against a reduced temperature, both small and large SC gaps collapse on a single curve that follows the prediction from BCS theory. The SC gap-to-$T_c$ ratio is 8.2 for the larger gap, and the initial slope of the upper critical field is -1.9 T/K, indicating that Y belongs to a family of strongly coupled BCS superconductors. The successful application of PCS to Y in DAC environments demonstrates its utility for future research on other pressure-induced high-$T_c$ superconductors.
Ytterbium (Yb) metal is divalent and nonmagnetic but would be expected under sufficient pressure to become trivalent and magnetic. We have carried out electrical resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements on Yb to pressures as high as 179 GPa over the temperature range 1.4 - 295 K. No evidence for magnetic order is observed. However, above 86 GPa Yb is found to become superconducting near 1.4 K with a transition temperature that increases monotonically with pressure to approximately 4.6 K at 179 GPa. Yb thus becomes the 54th known elemental superconductor.
The density functional theory for superconductors developed in the preceding article [cond-mat/0408685] is applied to the calculation of superconducting properties of several elemental metals. In particular, we present results for the transition temperature, for the gap at zero temperature, and for thermodynamic properties like the specific heat. We obtain an unprecedented agreement with experimental results. Superconductors both with strong and weak electron-phonon coupling are equally well described. This demonstrates that, as far as conventional superconductivity is concerned, the first-pri…
The unconventional multi-gap superconductivity in elemental Pb were reported previously by surface sensitive tunneling experiments, as well as predicted by several theory works. To obtain bulk evidence for such multiple gap behavior, the thermodynamic critical field $B_{\rm c}$ was measured along three different crystallographic directions ([100], [110], and [111]) in a high-quality Pb single crystal by means of muon spin rotation/relaxation. No difference in temperature evolution of $B_{\rm c}$ for all three directions was detected. The average reduced gap $α=Δ/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}=2.312(3)$ ($…
Superconductive H3S synthesized from H2S is very poorly crystallized, and has excess sulfur as impurity (3H2S -> 2H3S + S). The phase transition process undergoes in sulfur excess condition, which might cause hydrogen deficiency. The influence of hydrogen deficiency is not clear. Therefore investigation on the superconductivity in H3S with no hydrogen deficiency is demanded. Two groups performed synthesis of H3S from elemental sulfur and hydrogen (direct synthesis) and their results have shown that no hydrogen deficiency is caused when the direct synthesis is performed under hydrogen excessive…
Using muon-spin rotation the pressure-induced superconductivity in the Bi-III phase of elemental Bismuth (transition temperature $T_{\rm c}\simeq7.05$ K) was investigated. The Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ=λ/ξ=30(6)$ ($λ$ is the magnetic penetration depth, $ξ$ is the coherence length) was estimated which is the highest among single element superconductors. The temperature dependence of the superconducting energy gap [$Δ(T)$] reconstructed from $λ^{-2}(T)$ deviates from the weak-coupled BCS prediction. The coupling strength $2Δ/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}\simeq 4.34$ was estimated thus implying that Bi-I…
We report a record high superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\rm c}$) up to 23.6 K under high pressure in the elemental metal Ti, one of the top ten most abundant elements in Earth's crust. The $T_{\rm c}$ increases monotonically from 2.3 K at 40.3 GPa to 23.6 K at 144.9 GPa, which surpasses all known records from elemental metals reported so far. With further compression, a robust $T_{\rm c}$ of ~23 K is observed between 144.9 and 183 GPa in the $δ$-Ti phase. The pressure-dependent $T_{\rm c}$ can be well described by the conventional electron-phonon coupling (EPC) mechanism. Density F…
The momentum and temperature dependence of the lifetimes of acoustic phonons in the elemental superconductors Pb and Nb was determined by resonant spin-echo spectroscopy with neutrons. In both elements, the superconducting energy gap extracted from these measurements was found to converge with sharp anomalies originating from Fermi-surface nesting (Kohn anomalies) at low temperatures. The results indicate electron many-body correlations beyond the standard theoretical framework for conventional superconductivity. A possible mechanism is the interplay between superconductivity and spin- or char…
The observed "simple cubic" (sc) phase of elemental Ca at room temperature in the 32-109 GPa range is, from linear response calculations, dynamically unstable. By comparing first principle calculations of the enthalpy for five sc-related (non-close-packed) structures, we find that all five structures compete energetically at room temperature in the 40-90 GPa range, and three do so in the 100-130 GPa range. Some competing structures below 90 GPa are dynamically stable, i.e., no imaginary frequency, suggesting that these sc-derived short-range-order local structures exist locally and can account…
The application of the muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) technique for studying type-I superconductivity is discussed. In the intermediate state, i.e. when a type-I superconducting sample with non-zero demagnetization factor $N$ is separated into normal state and Meissner state (superconducting) domains, the $μ$SR technique allows to determine with very high precision the value of the thermodynamic critical field $B_{\rm c}$, as well as the volume of the sample in the normal and the superconducting state. Due to the microscopic nature of $μ$SR technique, the $B_{\rm c}$ values are determin…
The evolution from BCS to BEC superconductivity in the s-wave and d-wave channels is analyzed at zero temperature for a two-dimensional superconductor. Spectroscopic quantities for s-wave and d-wave systems present fundamental differences when particle density and attraction strength are varied. A detailed analysis of single quasiparticle properties (excitation spectrum, momentum distribution, spectral function and density of states) indicates that the evolution of these spectroscopic quantities in the d-wave case is not smooth, unlike the situation encountered for the s-wave system.
We present electrical resistance measurements of elemental yttrium on bulk and film samples, and both exhibit superconductivity at very high pressures. We show that the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature above 100 GPa is in good agreement with the predicted Fddd phase by Chen et al. [Phys. Rev. lett. 109, 157004 (2012)]. This result together with a new Rietveld refinement made on X-ray data at 123 GPa from Samudrala et al. [J. Phys. Condens. Matter 24, 362201 (2012)] offer strong evidence that the atomic structure of yttrium above 100 GPa is orthorhombic Fddd. Fu…
A possible explanation for the existence of the cuprate "pseudogap" state is that it is a d-wave superconductor without quantum phase rigidity. Transport and thermodynamic studies provide compelling evidence that supports this proposal, but few spectroscopic explorations of it have been made. One spectroscopic signature of d-wave superconductivity is the particle-hole symmetric "octet" of dispersive Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference modulations. Here we report on this octet's evolution from low temperatures to well into the underdoped pseudogap regime. No pronounced changes occur in the oc…
Pressure-induced superconductivity and structural phase transitions in phosphorous (P) are studied by resistivity measurements under pressures up to 170 GPa and fully $ab-initio$ crystal structure and superconductivity calculations up to 350 GPa. Two distinct superconducting transition temperature (T$_{c}$) vs. pressure ($P$) trends at low pressure have been reported more than 30 years ago, and for the first time we are able to reproduce them and devise a consistent explanation founded on thermodynamically metastable phases of black-phosphorous. Our experimental and theoretical results form a …
Systematic benchmark calculations for elemental bulks are presented to validate the accuracy of density functional theory for superconductors. We developed a method to treat the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) together with the spin fluctuation (SF) and examine their effect on the superconducting transition temperature. We found the following results from the benchmark calculations: (1) The calculations, including SOI and SF, reproduce the experimental superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) quantitatively. (2) The effect by SOI is small excepting a few elements such as Pb, Tl, and Re. (3)…

We present the first direct evidence for two-band superconductivity in the quasi-one dimensional chalcogenide Nb$_{2}$Pd$_{0.81}$S$_{5}$. Soft point contact spectroscopic measurements reveal Andreev reflection in the differential conductance $G$ in the zero-resistance superconducting (SC) state below $T_c$(=6.6~K). Multiple peaks in $G$ were clearly observed at 1.8~K and were successfully explained by the two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model with two gaps $Δ_{1}=0.48$~meV and $Δ_{2}=1.05$~meV. Their evolution in temperature and magnetic field is consistent with the conventional BCS theory. …
The superconductivity in the Bi-II phase of elemental Bismuth (transition temperature $T_{\rm c}\simeq3.92$ K at pressure $p\simeq 2.80$ GPa) was studied experimentally by means of the muon-spin rotation as well as theoretically by using the Eliashberg theory in combination with Density Functional Theory calculations. Experiments reveal that Bi-II is a type-I superconductor with a zero temperature value of the thermodynamic critical field $B_{\rm c}(0)\simeq31.97$~mT. The Eliashberg theory approach provides a good agreement with the experimental $T_{\rm c}$ and the temperature evolution of $B_…
AuBe is a chiral, non-centrosymmetric superconductor with transition temperature $T_C$ $\simeq$ 3.25 K. The broken inversion symmetry in its crystal structure makes AuBe a possible candidate to host a mixed singlet-triplet pairing symmetry in its superconducting order parameter ($Δ$). This possibility was investigated by transport, thermodynamic, and muon-spin rotation/relaxation experiments in AuBe. However, this issue was not addressed using direct spectroscopic probes so far. In addition, certain ambiguities exist in the description of superconductivity in AuBe based on $μ$SR experiments re…
We present detailed studies of the superconductivity in high-pressure H3S. X-ray diffraction measurements show that cubic Im-3m H3S was synthesized from elemental sulfur and hydrogen donor ammonia borane (NH3BH3). Our electrical transport measurements confirm superconductivity with a transition temperature Tc = 197 K at 153 GPa. From the analysis of both the normal state resistivity and the slope of the critical field, we conclude that the superconductivity is described by clean-limit behaviour. A significant broadening of the resistive transition in finite magnetic field is found, as expected…
For certain complex superconducting systems, the superconducting properties get enhanced under mesoscopic point contacts made of elemental non-superconducting metals. However, understanding of the mechanism through which such contact induced local enhancement of superconductivity happens has been limited due to the complex nature of such compounds. In this paper we present giant enhancement of superconducting transition temperature (T$_c$) and superconducting energy gap ($Δ$) in a simple elemental superconductor Zr. While bulk Zr shows a critical temperature around 0.6\,K, superconductivity su…
Using a membrane-driven diamond anvil cell and both ac magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements, we have characterized the superconducting phase diagram of elemental barium to pressures as high as 65 GPa. We have determined the superconducting properties of the recently discovered Ba-VI crystal structure, which can only be accessed via the application of pressure at low temperature. We find that Ba-VI exhibits a maximum Tc near 8 K, which is substantially higher than the maximum Tc found when pressure is applied at room temperature.
High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission experiments reveal subtle modifications of the surface electronic structure of VSe2. Most remarkably, we show that superconductivity can be induced in VSe2 by the right selection of substrate and growth parameters. Evidence for the superconducting state comes from the simultaneous detection of spectral kink, quasiparticle peak, Fermi gap, and their evolution with the temperature. The observation of Bogoliubov-like back-bending bands at low temperatures, signaling electron-hole pairing, further supports the presence of superconductivity in this syste…
Divalent Eu (4f7, J=7/2) possesses a strong local magnetic moment which suppresses superconductivity. Under sufficient pressure it is anticipated that Eu will become trivalent (4f6, J=0) and a weak Van Vleck paramagnet, thus opening the door for a possible superconducting state, in analogy with Am metal (5f6, J=0) which superconducts at 0.79 K. We present ac susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements on Eu metal for temperatures 1.5 - 297 K to pressures as high as 142 GPa. At approximately 80 GPa Eu becomes superconducting at Tc = 1.8 K; Tc increases linearly with pressure to 2.75 …
The explanation of the nature of superconducting gap in high temperature superconductors (HTSC) is a fundamental task which solution can lead to the understanding of superconducting mechanism. However, it has not been fully solved yet. From the mid of the twentieth century when Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer constructed their theory it has been believed that a superconducting gap is a collective phenomenon of electron excitations. In this work it is demonstrated that according to translation-invariant bipolaron theory of HTSC the different types of experiments measure for the gap different val…
Cuprate superconductors have long been known to exhibit an energy gap that persists high above the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$). Debate has continued now for decades as to whether it is a precursor superconducting gap or a pseudogap arising from some competing correlation. Failure to resolve this has arguably delayed explaining the origins of superconductivity in these highly complex materials. Here we effectively settle the question by calculating a variety of thermodynamic and spectroscopic properties, exploring the effect of a temperature-dependent pair-breaking term in th…

Extreme pressure strongly affects the superconducting properties of ``simple'' elemental metals, like Li, K and Al. Pressure induces superconductivity in Li (as high as 17 K), while suppressing it in Al. We report first-principles investigations of the superconducting properties of dense Li, K and Al based on a recently proposed, parameter-free, method. Our results show an unprecedented agreement with experiments, assess the predictive power of the method over a wide range of densities and electron-phonon couplings, and provide predictions for K, where no experiments exist so far. More importa…
The Heusler compound ScInAu$_2$ was previously reported to have a superconducting ground state with a critical temperature of 3.0 K. Recent high throughput calculations have also predicted that the material harbors a topologically non-trivial band structure similar to that reported for beta-PdBi$_2$. In an effort to explore the interplay between the superconducting and topological properties properties, electrical resistance, magnetization, and x-ray diffraction measurements were performed on polycrystalline ScInAu$_2$. The data reveal that high-quality polycrystalline samples lack the super-c…
Two-dimensional Rashba superconductor Si(111)-$\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$-(Tl,Pb) is a candidate platform of mixed spin-singlet and -triplet superconductivity. A recent scanning tunneling microscope (STM) experiment revealed a pseudogap at the vortex core, suggesting the finite triplet component [T. Nakamura $\textit{et al.}$, Phys. Rev. B $\bf{ 98}$, 134505 (2018)]. Detailed spectroscopic information of the superconducting gap and the low-energy band structure is necessary to establish the putative triplet superconductivity. Here, we performed high-energy-resolution spectroscopic imaging experim…
A polycrystalline sample of the high-entropy-alloy-type telluride AgInSnPbBiTe5 was synthesized using high-pressure synthesis. Superconductivity with a transition temperature (Tc) of 2.6 K was observed in AgInSnPbBiTe5. Elemental and structural analyses revealed that five metals are mixed in a metal site of an NaCl-type structure. Since AgInSnPbBiTe5 has a cation site (Ag, In, Sn, Pb, and Bi) and an anion site (Te), this is the first example of a high-entropy-alloy (HEA) pseudo-binary superconductor.
The temperature dependent frequency shifts of the Raman active G-band have recently been measured by R.Walter et al. for single-walled carbon nanotubes containing different concentrations of the magnetic impurity Ni:Co. These Raman data can be quantitatively explained by magnetic pair-breaking effect on a superconductor with a mean-field transition temperature T_c0 of 645 K, in excellent agreement with independent electrical transport and single-particle tunneling data. We suggest that such high-T_c superconductivity might arise from the pairing interaction mediated mainly by undamped acoustic…
In an experiment in a diamond anvil cell utilizing helium pressure medium, yttrium metal displays a superconducting transition temperature which increases monotonically from Tc ? 3.5 K at 30 GPa to 17 K at 89.3 GPa, one of the highest transition temperatures for any elemental superconductor. The pressure dependence of Tc differs substantially from that observed in previous studies under quasihydrostatic pressure to 30 GPa. Remarkably, the dependence of Tc on relative volume V/Vo is linear over the entire pressure range above 33 GPa, implying that higher values of Tc are likely at higher pressu…
In a recent X-ray absorption study in boron doped diamond, Nakamura et al. have seen a well isolated narrow boron impurity band in non-superconducting samples and an additional narrow band at the chemical potential in a superconducting sample. We interpret the beautiful spectra as evidence for upper Hubbard band of a Mott insulating impurity band and an additional metallic `mid-gap band' of a conducting `self-doped' Mott insulator. This supports the basic framework of a recent theory of the present author of strongly correlated impurity band superconductivity (SCIBS) in a template of a wide-ga…
When certain elemental metals like Cu, Sr and Nb are intercalated between the layers of Bi$_2$Se$_3$, a topological insulator, the intercalated systems superconduct with critical temperatures around 3 K. Naturally, in all these cases, the possibility of topological superconductivity was suggested and explored. However, in cases of Cu and Sr intercalated systems, the low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments revealed fully formed gaps where no signature of low-energy states, a requisite for topological superconductivity, was found. Here, through STM spectroscopy down to 40…
Recent development in the physics of high-temperature superconductivity is reviewed, with special emphasis on the studies of the low-energy excitations of cuprate and iron-based superconductors. For cuprate superconductors, a phenomenology based on coexisting competing orders with superconductivity in the ground state of these doped Mott insulators is shown to provide a consistent account for a wide range of experimental findings. In the case of iron-based superconductors, studies of the low-energy excitations reveal interesting similarities and differences when compared with cuprate supercond…
We have computed the effective interaction between vortices in the Ginzburg-Landau model from large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations, taking thermal fluctuations of matter fields and gauge fields fully into account close to the critical temperature. We find a change, in the form of a crossover, from attractive to repulsive effective vortex interactions in an intermediate range of Ginzburg-Landau parameters $κ\in [0.76-1]/\sqrt{2}$ upon increasing the temperature in the superconducting state. This corresponds to a thermally induced crossover from \typeI to \typeII superconductivity around a temper…
The superconductivity of the 4-angstrom single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was discovered more than a decade ago, and marked the breakthrough of finding superconductivity in pure elemental undoped carbon compounds. The van Hove singularities in the electronic density of states at the Fermi level in combination with a large Debye temperature of the SWCNTs are expected to cause an impressively large superconducting gap. We have developed an innovative computational algorithm specially tailored for the investigation of superconductivity in ultrathin SWCNTs. We predict the superconducting tra…

The possibility of high temperature superconductivity in organic compounds has been discussed since the pioneering work of Little in 1964, with unsatisfactory progress until the recent report of a weak Meissner shielding effect at 120 Kelvin in potassium-doped para-terphenyl samples. To date however, no other signals of the superconductivity have been shown, including the zero-resistance state or evidence for the formation of the Cooper pairs that are inherent to the superconducting state. Here, using high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy on potassium surface-doped para-terphenyl crystals…
The highest superconducting temperature T$_c$ observed in any elemental metal (Li with T$_c$ ~ 20 K at pressure P ~ 40 GPa) is shown to arise from critical (formally divergent) electron-phonon coupling to the transverse T$_1$ phonon branch along intersections of Kohn anomaly surfaces with the Fermi surface. First principles linear response calculations of the phonon spectrum and spectral function $α^2 F(ω)$ reveal (harmonic) instability already at 25 GPa. Our results imply that the fcc phase is anharmonically stabilized in the 25-38 GPa range.
The superconducting transition temperatures of high-Tc compounds based on copper, iron, ruthenium and certain organic molecules are discovered to be dependent on bond lengths, ionic valences, and Coulomb coupling between electronic bands in adjacent, spatially separated layers [1]. Optimal transition temperature, denoted as T_c0, is given by the universal expression $k_BT_c0 = e^2 Λ/ \ellζ$; $\ell$ is the spacing between interacting charges within the layers, ζis the distance between interacting layers and Λis a universal constant, equal to about twice the reduced electron Compton wavelength (…
In the high-temperature ($T_{c}$) cuprate superconductors, increasing evidence suggests that the pseudogap, existing below the pseudogap temperature $T$*, has a distinct broken electronic symmetry from that of superconductivity. Particularly, recent scattering experiments on the underdoped cuprates have suggested that a charge ordering competes with superconductivity. However, no direct link of this physics and the important low-energy excitations has been identified. Here we report an antagonistic singularity at $T_{c}$ in the spectral weight of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ as a compel…
Single-layer FeSe films grown on the SrTiO3 substrate (FeSe/STO) have attracted much attention because of their possible record-high superconducting critical temperature Tc and distinct electronic structures in iron-based superconductors. However, it has been under debate on how high its Tc can really reach due to the inconsistency of the results obtained from the transport, magnetic and spectroscopic measurements. Here we report spectroscopic evidence of superconductivity pairing at 83 K in single-layer FeSe/STO films. By preparing high-quality single-layer FeSe/STO films, we observe for the …
High-entropy alloys (HEA) form through the random arrangement of five or more chemical elements on a crystalline lattice. Despite the significant amount of resulting compositional disorder, a subset of HEAs enters a superconducting state below critical temperatures $T_c<10$ K. The superconducting properties of the known HEAs seem to suffice a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) description, but little is known about their superconducting order parameter and the microscopic role of disorder. We report on magnetic susceptibility measurements on films of the superconducting HEA (TaNb)$_{1-x}$(ZrHfTi)…
Monovalent metals contain half filled band (HFB) of s-electrons. Emphasizing importance of Coulomb repulsions in HFB in 2D and 1D monovalent systems we sketched a theory (2018) for ambient temperature granular superconductivity reported by Thapa and Pandey (2018) in Au-Ag nanostructures (updated by Thapa et al., 2019). Sharpening our theory, we suggest that \textit{Coulomb repulsions in certain structurally perturbed regions (atomic clusters, stacking faults, grain boundaries etc.) create nanoscale reservoirs of singlet electron pairs}. These low dimensional patches are hybridized to a backgro…
We report the high-field superconducting properties of thin, disordered Re films via magneto-transport and tunneling density of states measurements. Films with thicknesses in the range of 9 nm to 3 nm had normal state sheet resistances of $\sim$0.2 k$Ω$ to $\sim$1 k$Ω$ and corresponding transition temperatures in the range of 6 K to 3 K. Tunneling spectra were consistent with those of a moderate coupling BCS superconductor. Notwithstanding these unremarkable superconducting properties, the films exhibited an extraordinarily high upper critical field. We estimate their zero-temperature $H_{c2}$…
Magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) has emerged as a novel moiré material that exhibits both strong electronic correlations and unconventional superconductivity. However, spectroscopic studies of its electronic properties are lacking, and the nature of superconductivity and the corresponding order parameter in this system remain elusive. Here we perform high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy of MATTG and reveal extensive regions of atomic reconstruction that favor mirror-symmetric stacking. In these regions, we observe a cascade of symmetry-breaking electronic…
Based on the first-principles density functional theory electronic structure calculation, we investigate the possible phonon-mediated superconductivity in arsenene, a two-dimensional buckled arsenic atomic sheet, under electron doping. We find that the strong superconducting pairing interaction results mainly from the $p_z$-like electrons of arsenic atoms and the $A_1$ phonon mode around the $K$ point, and the superconducting transition temperature can be as high as 30.8 K in the arsenene with 0.2 doped electrons per unit cell and 12\% applied biaxial tensile strain. This transition temperatur…
Thermal conductivity, point contact spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission and Raman spectroscopy measurements were performed on BaFe1.9Pt0.1As2 single crystals obtained from the same synthesis batch in order to investigate the superconducting energy gap structure using multiple techniques. Low temperature thermal conductivity was measured in the superconducting state as a function of temperature and magnetic field, revealing an absence of quasiparticle excitations in the T=0 limit up to 15 T applied magnetic fields. Point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy measurements were performed…
