The superconductivity in the Bi-II phase of elemental Bismuth (transition temperature $T_{\rm c}\simeq3.92$ K at pressure $p\simeq 2.80$ GPa) was studied experimentally by means of the muon-spin rotation as well as theoretically by using the Eliashberg theory in combination with Density Functional Theory calculations. Experiments reveal that Bi-II is a type-I superconductor with a zero temperature value of the thermodynamic critical field $B_{\rm c}(0)\simeq31.97$~mT. The Eliashberg theory approach provides a good agreement with the experimental $T_{\rm c}$ and the temperature evolution of $B_{\rm c}$. The estimated value for the retardation (coupling) parameter $k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}/ω_{\rm ln} \approx 0.07$ ($ω_{\rm ln}$ is the logarithmically averaged phonon frequency) suggests that Bi-II is an intermediately-coupled superconductor.
Using muon-spin rotation the pressure-induced superconductivity in the Bi-III phase of elemental Bismuth (transition temperature $T_{\rm c}\simeq7.05$ K) was investigated. The Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ=λ/ξ=30(6)$ ($λ$ is the magnetic penetration depth, $ξ$ is the coherence length) was estimated which is the highest among single element superconductors. The temperature dependence of the superconducting energy gap [$Δ(T)$] reconstructed from $λ^{-2}(T)$ deviates from the weak-coupled BCS prediction. The coupling strength $2Δ/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}\simeq 4.34$ was estimated thus implying that Bi-I…
Although copper and bismuth do not form any compounds at ambient conditions, two intermetallics, CuBi and Cu$_{11}$Bi$_7$, were recently synthesized at high pressures. Here we report on the discovery of additional copper-bismuth phases at elevated pressures with high-densities from ab initio calculations. In particular, a Cu$_2$Bi compound is found to be thermodynamically stable at pressures above 59 GPa, crystallizing in the cubic Laves structure. In strong contrast to Cu$_{11}$Bi$_7$ and CuBi, cubic Cu$_2$Bi does not exhibit any voids or channels. Since the bismuth lone pairs in cubic Cu$_2$…
We report superconductivity in a new layered bismuth oxyselenide LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 with the ZrCuSiAs-type structure composed of alternating superconducting BiSe2 and blocking LaO layers. The superconducting transition temperature is TC = 2.6K, as revealed from DC magnetization, resistivity and muon spin rotation (muSR) experiments. DC magnetization measurements indicate a superconducting volume fraction of approximately 80%, which is at least twice higher in comparison to that found in corresponding sulphide LaO0.5F0.5BiS2. Importantly, the bulk character of superconductivity in LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 …
Single crystal of La(O,F)BiSe2 was successfully grown for the first time by the CsCl flux method. Single crystal X-ray structural analysis clearly showed that La(O,F)BiSe2 crystalizes with space group P4/nmm (lattice parameters a = 4.1408(2) Å, c = 14.1096(6) Å). The structure is composed of alternating BiSe2 and LaO layers. Magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurements showed the superconducting transition at 3.6 K, which is higher than that of as-grown La(O,F)BiS2. The structural analysis implies that La(O,F)BiSe2 is potential superconductor having higher Tc under high pressure.
To decipher the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity, it is important to know how the superconducting pairing emerges from the unusual normal states of cuprate superconductors, including pseudogap, anomalous Fermi liquid and strange metal (SM). A long-standing issue under debate is how the superconducting pairing is formed and condensed in the SM phase because the superconducting transition temperature is the highest in this phase. Here, we report the first experimental observation of a pressure-induced crossover from two- to three-dimensional superconducting states in the optimally…
The doped perovskite BaBiO$_3$ exhibits a maximum superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of 34 K and was the first high-$T_c$ oxide to be discovered, yet pivotal questions regarding the nature of both the metallic and superconducting states remain unresolved. Although it is generally thought that superconductivity in the bismuthates is of the conventional s-wave type, the pairing mechanism is still debated, with strong electron-phonon coupling and bismuth valence or bond disproportionation possibly playing a role. Here we use diffuse x-ray scattering and Monte Carlo modeling to study t…
Unconventional superconductivity has been suggested to be present at the interface between bismuth and nickel in thin-film bilayers. In this work, we study the structural, magnetic and superconducting properties of sputter deposited Bi/Ni bilayers. As-grown, our films do not display a superconducting transition, however, when stored at room temperature, after about 14 days our bilayers develop a superconducting transition up to 3.8 K. To systematically study the effect of low temperature annealing on our bilayers, we perform structural characterization with X-ray diffraction and polarized neut…
All solid phases of bismuth under pressure, but one, have been experimentally found to superconduct. From Bi-I to Bi-V, avoiding Bi-IV, they become superconductors and perhaps Bi-IV may also become superconductive. To investigate the influence of the electronic properties N(E) and the vibrational properties F(ω) on their superconductivity we have ab initio calculated them for the corresponding experimental crystalline structures, and using a BCS approach have been able to determine their critical temperatures Tc obtaining results close to experiment: For Bi-I (The Wyckoff Phase) we predicted a…
Superconductivity that spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry (TRS) has been found, so far, only in a handful of 3D crystals with bulk inversion symmetry. Here we report an observation of spontaneous TRS breaking in a 2D superconducting system without inversion symmetry: the epitaxial bilayer films of bismuth and nickel. The evidence comes from the onset of the polar Kerr effect at the superconducting transition in the absence of an external magnetic field, detected by the ultrasensitive loop-less fiber-optic Sagnac interferometer. Because of strong spin-orbit interaction and lack of inve…
Evidence for local charge fluctuations linked to a charge disproportionation of the Bi ions in the distorted lattice of superconducting LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ BiS$_{2}$ is presented. In-plane short-range distortions of sulfur atoms up to 0.3 Å in magnitude break site symmetry and create two distinct environments around Bi. Out-of-plane motion of apical sulfur brings it closer to the La-O/F doping layer with increasing $x$ that may lead to a charge transfer conduit between the doping layers and the superconducting BiS$_{2}$ planes. The mechanism for superconductivity may arise from the interplay be…
Magnetization measurements prove that the magnetic properties of large-angle (theta > 30o) bismuth bicrystals with crystallite interface (CI) of twisting type essentially differ from well-known results on single-crystalline specimens. Two superconducting phases were observed at CI of bicrystals (ordinary rhombohedral Bi is not a superconductor). It was shown that one of them (phase with Tc ~ 8,4 K) is localized in central part of crystallite interface. It was also found that in adjacent layers (width of layer d2 ~ 20 nm) of CI the proximity effect is significant.
Topological superconductivity is one of the frontier research directions in condensed matter physics. One of the unique elementary excitations in topological superconducting state is the Majorana fermion (mode) which is its own antiparticle and obeys the non-Abelian statistics, and thus useful for constructing the fault-tolerant quantum computing. The evidence for Majorana fermions (mode) in condensed matter state is now quickly accumulated. Here we report the easily achievable zero-energy mode on the tunneling spectra on Bi islands deposited on the Fe(Te,Se) superconducting single crystals. W…
Using a 72-atom supercell we report ab initio calculations of the electronic and vibrational densities of states for the bismuth (111) bilayers (bismuthene) with periodic boundary conditions and a vacuum of 5 Å, 10 Å and 20 Å. We find that the electronic density of states shows a metallic character at the Fermi level and that the vibrational density of states manifests the expected gap due to the layers. Our results indicate that a vacuum down to 5 Å does not affect the electronic and vibrational structures noticeably. A comparison of present results with those obtained for the Wyckoff structu…

As shown in former papers, the nonadiabatic Heisenberg model presents a novel mechanism of Cooper pair formation generated by the strongly correlated atomic-like motion of the electrons in narrow, roughly half-filled "superconducting bands". These are energy bands represented by optimally localized spin-dependent Wannier functions adapted to the symmetry of the material under consideration. The formation of Cooper pairs is not the result of an attractive electron-electron interaction but can be described in terms of quantum mechanical constraining forces constraining the electrons to form Coop…
We report low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy studies of Ni-Bi films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Highly anisotropic and twofold symmetric superconducting gaps are revealed in two distinct composites, Bi-rich NiBi3 and near-equimolar NixBi, both sharing quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure. We further reveal axially elongated vortices in both phases, but Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon states solely within the vortex cores of NiBi3. Intriguingly, although the localized bound state splits energetically off at a finite distance ~10 nm away from a vortex center along t…
Bismuth oxysulfide Bi4O4S3, which has recently been claimed to be an exotic superconductor (Tc = 4.5 K), was investigated by magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements as well as by electron probe microanalysis. Single-phase Bi4O4S3 was successfully prepared by a high-pressure method, and its lattice parameters and normal-state resistivity, as well as the density of states at the Fermi level, were found to be comparable to those determined earlier. However, the observed superconductivity was most likely impurity-driven, strictly contradictory to the observations in ongoing…
Magnetic measurements have been carried out in the superconducting and normal states of the optimally doped nonmagnetic bismuthate superconductor Ba0.63K0.37BiO3. The magnetic data along with previous muSR, resistivity, and tunneling data consistently show that there is a large polaronic enhancement in the density of states and effective electron-phonon coupling constant. The first-principle calculation within the density-functional theory indicates a small electron-phonon coupling constant of about 0.3-0.4, which can only lead to about 1 K superconductivity within the conventional phonon-medi…
We report experiments on a superconducting spin switch based on technologically relevant materials as elemental ferromagnetic Co and elemental superconducting Nb. The Co/Nb/Co structure exhibits inverse spin switch effect, can be operated at liquid helium temperature and can switch from superconductive to normal state in rather weak applied magnetic fields. Relevant critical currents as a function of temperature and magnetic field as well as preparation of superconductive or resistive state are addressed here.
Besides the cuprate superconductors lead-doped barium bismuthate still attracts intense interest concerning its relatively high critical temperature and the nature of its superconductivity in vicinity to a charge density wave ordered topological insulator. Here we present bilayers of barium bismuthate and barium leadate and find two-dimensional superconductivity at their interfaces well described by current-voltage characteristics compatible with a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Magneto-transport studies independently prove the two-dimensional character of the superconducting prop…
The density functional theory for superconductors developed in the preceding article [cond-mat/0408685] is applied to the calculation of superconducting properties of several elemental metals. In particular, we present results for the transition temperature, for the gap at zero temperature, and for thermodynamic properties like the specific heat. We obtain an unprecedented agreement with experimental results. Superconductors both with strong and weak electron-phonon coupling are equally well described. This demonstrates that, as far as conventional superconductivity is concerned, the first-pri…
The synthesis of materials in high-pressure experiments has recently attracted increasing attention, especially since the discovery of record breaking superconducting temperatures in the sulfur-hydrogen and other hydrogen-rich systems. Commonly, the initial precursor in a high pressure experiment contains constituent elements that are known to form compounds at ambient conditions, however the discovery of high-pressure phases in systems immiscible under ambient conditions poses an additional materials design challenge. We performed an extensive multi component $ab\,initio$ structural search in…
In the present paper, the impact of small Fermi energy on the selected parameters of the superconducting state in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$BiO$_{3}$ (BKBO) is studied at $x \in (0.3, 0.4, 0.5)$. This is done by employing the adiabatic and non-adiabatic Eliashberg equations in context of the available experimental data. It is found that the retardation, strong-coupling and the non-adiabatic effects notably influence superconducting phase in BKBO. In particular, the electron-electron interaction, approximated here by the Coulomb pseudopotential, is argued to be reduced by the non-adiabatic effects that …
When investigating low-frequency (0.1 Hz) oscillations of miltiphase high-temperature cuprate superconductors (HTSC) Bi1,7Pb0,3Sr2Ca(n-1)CunOy (n=2-30), a wide attenuation peak with a maximal at T=200K detected. This peak was particularly pronounced in field cooling (FC) experiments, i.e. after abrupt cooling of the sample in the external magnetic field at the temperature T less Tc with subsequent slow warming up to room temperature with invariance of applied field. The attenuation peak height depended on the preliminary orientation (before cooling) of the samples in the measured permanent mag…
The temperature dependent measurements of the thermodynamic critical field and the specific heat for the pressure stabilized Ga-II phase of elemental Gallium are presented. The discussion of these and other Ga phases data in the context of elemental and binary phonon-mediated type-I superconductors allowed to establish simple scaling relations between BCS quantities such as $B_{\rm c}(0)/T_{\rm c}\sqrt{γ_{\rm e}}$ and the specific heat jump at $T_{\rm c}$ versus the coupling strength $2Δ/k_{\rm B} T_{\rm c}$ [$Δ$ and $B_{\rm c}(0)$ are the zero-temperature values of the superconducting energy …
We have systematically searched for the ground state structures of bismuth hydrides based on evolutionary algorithm method and particle swarm optimization algorithm method. Given only rich-hydrogen region, except for BiH$_{3}$, other hydrides (BiH, BiH$_{2}$, BiH$_{4}$, BiH$_{5}$, BiH$_{6}$) have been predicted to be stable with pressurization. With the increase of hydrogen content, hydrogen exists in bismuth hydrides with the different forms and presents the characteristics of ionicity. Under high pressure, the remarkable structural feature is the emergence of H$_{2}$ units in BiH$_{2}$, BiH$…
Systematic benchmark calculations for elemental bulks are presented to validate the accuracy of density functional theory for superconductors. We developed a method to treat the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) together with the spin fluctuation (SF) and examine their effect on the superconducting transition temperature. We found the following results from the benchmark calculations: (1) The calculations, including SOI and SF, reproduce the experimental superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) quantitatively. (2) The effect by SOI is small excepting a few elements such as Pb, Tl, and Re. (3)…
We performed magnetization M(H,T) and magnetoresistance R(T,H) measurements on powdered (grain size ~ 149 micrometers) as well as highly oriented rhombohedral (A7) bismuth (Bi) samples consisting of single crystalline blocks of size ~ 1x1 mm2 in the plane perpendicular to the trigonal c-axis. The obtained results revealed the occurrence of (1) local superconductivity in powdered samples with Tc(0) = 8.75 \pm 0.05 K, and (2) global superconductivity at Tc(0) = 7.3 \pm 0.1 K in polycrystalline Bi triggered by low-resistance Ohmic contacts with silver (Ag) normal metal. The results provide eviden…
The search for unconventional superconductivity has been focused on materials with strong spin-orbit coupling and unique crystal lattices. Doped bismuth selenide (Bi$_2$Se$_3$) is a strong candidate given the topological insulator nature of the parent compound and its triangular lattice. The coupling between the physical properties in the superconducting state and its underlying crystal symmetry is a crucial test for unconventional superconductivity. In this paper, we report direct evidence that the superconducting magnetic response couples strongly to the underlying 3-fold crystal symmetry in…
Ytterbium (Yb) metal is divalent and nonmagnetic but would be expected under sufficient pressure to become trivalent and magnetic. We have carried out electrical resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements on Yb to pressures as high as 179 GPa over the temperature range 1.4 - 295 K. No evidence for magnetic order is observed. However, above 86 GPa Yb is found to become superconducting near 1.4 K with a transition temperature that increases monotonically with pressure to approximately 4.6 K at 179 GPa. Yb thus becomes the 54th known elemental superconductor.
Several decades after the discovery of superconductivity in bismuthates, the strength of their electron-phonon coupling and its evolution with doping remain puzzling. To clarify these issues, polycrystalline hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$BiO$_3$ ($0.1 \le x \le 0.6$) samples were systematically synthesized and their bulk- and microscopic superconducting properties were investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility and muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR), respectively. The phase diagram of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$BiO$_3$ was reliably extended up to $x = 0.6$, which is still found to be a bulk super…
A pressure-induced topological quantum phase transition has been theoretically predicted for the semiconductor BiTeI with giant Rashba spin splitting. In this work, the evolution of the electrical transport properties in BiTeI and BiTeBr is investigated under high pressure. The pressure-dependent resistivity in a wide temperature range passes through a minimum at around 3 GPa, indicating the predicted transition in BiTeI. Superconductivity is observed in both BiTeI and BiTeBr while the resistivity at higher temperatures still exhibits semiconducting behavior. Theoretical calculations suggest t…
We use Density Functional Theory (DFT) and structure searching methods to show that the ground state of elemental sulfur is a Barium-IVa type incommensurate host-guest (HG) phase between $386$-$679$ GPa, becoming the first group-VI element predicted to possess such a structure. Within the HG phase, sulfur undergoes a series of transitions in which adjacent guest chains are not aligned but rather offset by different amounts, which can be described as a rearrangement of the stacking order of the chains. We show that these chain rearrangements are intimately coupled to modulations of the host and…
We have investigated the Se isotope effect in layered bismuth chalcogenide (BiCh2-based) superconductor LaO0.6F0.4Bi(S,Se)2 with 76Se and 80Se. For all examined samples, the Se concentration, which is linked to the superconducting properties, is successfully controlled within x = 1.09-1.14 in LaO0.6F0.4BiS2-xSex. From the magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements, changes in Tc are not observed for the LaO0.6F0.4Bi(S,Se)2 samples with 76Se and 80Se isotopes. Our results suggest that pairing in the BiCh2-based superconductors is not mediated by phonons, and unconventional supercondu…
Pressure-induced superconductivity and structural phase transitions in phosphorous (P) are studied by resistivity measurements under pressures up to 170 GPa and fully $ab-initio$ crystal structure and superconductivity calculations up to 350 GPa. Two distinct superconducting transition temperature (T$_{c}$) vs. pressure ($P$) trends at low pressure have been reported more than 30 years ago, and for the first time we are able to reproduce them and devise a consistent explanation founded on thermodynamically metastable phases of black-phosphorous. Our experimental and theoretical results form a …
Oxygen-isotope effect has been investigated in a recently discovered superconductor Sr_{0.4}K_{0.6}BiO_{3}. This compound has a distorted perovskite structure and becomes superconducting at about 12 K. Upon replacing ^{16}O with ^{18}O by 60-80%, the T_c of the sample is shifted down by 0.32-0.50 K, corresponding to an isotope exponent of alpha_{O} = 0.40(5). This isotope exponent is very close to that for a similar bismuthate superconductor Ba_{1-x}K_{x}BiO_{3} with T_c = 30 K. The very distinctive doping and T_c dependencies of alpha_{O} observed in bismuthates and cuprates suggest that bism…
A comprehensive theory of superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ must explain experiments that suggest even parity superconducting order and others that suggest broken time reversal symmetry. Completeness further requires that the theory applies to Ca$_2$RuO$_4$, a Mott-Hubbard semiconductor that exhibits an unprecedented insulator-to-metal transition driven by very small electric field, and also by doping with very small concentration of electrons, leading to a metallic state proximate to ferromagnetism. A valence transition model, previously proposed for superconducting cuprates [Phys. Rev. B {\…
Bismuth displays puzzling superconducting properties. In its crystalline equilibrium phase, it does not seem to superconduct at accessible low temperatures. However, in the amorphous phase it displays superconductivity at ~ 6 K. Under pressure bismuth has been found to superconduct at Tcs that go from 3.9 K to 8.5 K depending on the phase obtained. So the question is: what electronic or vibrational changes occur that explains this radical transformation in the conducting behavior of this material? In a recent publication we argue that changes in the density of electronic and vibrational states…
The application of the muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) technique for studying type-I superconductivity is discussed. In the intermediate state, i.e. when a type-I superconducting sample with non-zero demagnetization factor $N$ is separated into normal state and Meissner state (superconducting) domains, the $μ$SR technique allows to determine with very high precision the value of the thermodynamic critical field $B_{\rm c}$, as well as the volume of the sample in the normal and the superconducting state. Due to the microscopic nature of $μ$SR technique, the $B_{\rm c}$ values are determin…
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is a powerful technique for imaging atomic structure and inferring information on local elemental composition, chemical bonding, and electronic excitations. However, traditional methods of visual inspection can be challenging for such determination in multi-component alloys, particularly beyond the dilute limit due to chemical disorder and electronic inhomogeneity. One viable solution is to use machine learning to analyze STM data and identify patterns and correlations that may not be immediately apparent through visual inspection alone. Here, we apply this …
Recent theoretical studies employing density-functional theory have predicted BaBiO$_{3}$ (when doped with electrons) and YBiO$_{3}$ to become a topological insulator (TI) with a large topological gap (~ 0.7 eV). This, together with the natural stability against surface oxidation, makes the Bismuth-Oxide family of special interest for possible applications in quantum information and spintronics. The central question, we study here, is whether the hole-doped Bismuth Oxides, i.e. Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$BiO$_{3}$ and BaPb$_{1-x}$Bi$_{x}$O$_{3}$, which are "high-Tc" bulk superconducting near 30 K, addit…
Superconductivity with an ultra low Tc $\sim$ 0.5 mK was discovered recently in bismuth, a semimetal. To develop a model and scenario for Bi we begin with a cubic reference lattice, close to A7 (dimerized cubic) structure of Bi. Three valence electrons hop among 6p$_x$, 6p$_y$ and 6p$_z$ orbitals and form \textit{quasi one dimensional chains at half filling}. An interesting interplay follows: i) Mott localization tendency in the chains, ii) metallization by interchain hopping and iii) lattice dimerization by electron-phonon coupling. In our proposal, a potential high Tc superconductivity from …
We examine the effect on the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of chemical inhomogeneities in Bi2201 and Bi2212 single crystals. Cation disorder at the Sr crystallographic site is inherent in these materials and strongly affects the value of Tc. Partial substitution of Sr by Ln (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, and Bi) in Bi_{2}Sr_{1.6}Ln_{0.4}CuO_{6} results in a monotonic decrease of Tc with increasing ionic radius mismatch. By minimizing Sr site disorder at the expense of Ca site disorder, we demonstrate that the Tc of Bi2212 can be increased to 96 K. Based on these results we discuss…
Newly discovered Bi-O-S compounds remain an enigma in attempts to understand their electronic properties. A recent study of Bi$_{4}$O$_{4}$S$_{3}$ has shown it to be a mixture of two phases, Bi$_{2}$OS$_{2}$ and Bi$_{3}$O$_{2}$S$_{3}$, the latter being superconducting [W. A. Phelan et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 135, 5372 (2013)]. Using density functional theory, we explore the electronic structure of both the phases and the effect of the introduction of stacking faults. Our results demonstrate that the S$_{2}$ layers dope the bismuth-sulphur bands. The bands at the Fermi level are of clear two-dim…
Very recent report [1] on observation of superconductivity in Bi4O4S3 could potentially reignite the search for superconductivity in a broad range of layered sulphides. We report here synthesis of Bi4O4S3 at 5000C by vacuum encapsulation technique and basic characterizations. Detailed structural, magnetization, and electrical transport results are reported. Bi4O4S3 is contaminated by small amounts of Bi2S3 and Bi impurities. The majority phase is tetragonal I4/mmm space group with lattice parameters a = 3.9697(2)Å, c = 41.3520(1)Å. Both AC and DC magnetization measurements confirmed that Bi4O4…
