Superconductive H3S synthesized from H2S is very poorly crystallized, and has excess sulfur as impurity (3H2S -> 2H3S + S). The phase transition process undergoes in sulfur excess condition, which might cause hydrogen deficiency. The influence of hydrogen deficiency is not clear. Therefore investigation on the superconductivity in H3S with no hydrogen deficiency is demanded. Two groups performed synthesis of H3S from elemental sulfur and hydrogen (direct synthesis) and their results have shown that no hydrogen deficiency is caused when the direct synthesis is performed under hydrogen excessive condition. However, no measurements of superconductivity has been carried out because of the major technical difficulties in hydrogen experiments in diamond anvil cells (DACs). Here, we report the first electrical resistance measurements in superconductive H3S synthesized from elemental sulfur and hydrogen (3H2 + 2S -> 2H3S). Our powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) using a synchrotron X-ray revealed that synthesized H3S has much improved crystalline quality and no sulfur as reported in previous works. We observed a superconducting transition with a sharp drop of the resistance at Tonset = 200 K and we obtained the highest Toffset of 186 K in S-H system.
We discovered a novel annealing method for Fe-chalcogenide superconductors. It was found that sulfur annealing deintercalated excess Fe via formation of FeS2. Due to its specifics, sulfur annealing is applicable when preparing Fe-chalcogenide-based wires or cables.
We report magnetization measurements performed on graphite--sulfur composites which demonstrate a clear superconducting behavior below the critical temperature T$_{c0}$ = 35 K. The Meissner-Ochsenfeld effect, screening supercurrents, and magnetization hysteresis loops characteristic of type-II superconductors were measured. The results indicate that the superconductivity occurs in a small sample fraction, possibly related to the sample surface.
We use Density Functional Theory (DFT) and structure searching methods to show that the ground state of elemental sulfur is a Barium-IVa type incommensurate host-guest (HG) phase between $386$-$679$ GPa, becoming the first group-VI element predicted to possess such a structure. Within the HG phase, sulfur undergoes a series of transitions in which adjacent guest chains are not aligned but rather offset by different amounts, which can be described as a rearrangement of the stacking order of the chains. We show that these chain rearrangements are intimately coupled to modulations of the host and…
Sulfur has recently been found to be a superconductor at high pressure. At ~93 GPa Tc is 10.1 K, and the sulfur is in a base-centered orthorhombic (b.c.o) structure. At ~160 GPa Tc is 17 K and sulfur is in a rhobohedral (b-Po) structure. The mechanism for superconductivity in sulfur is not known; in particular, a band-structure calculation does not find superconductivity in sulfur until 500 GPa. Following work by Anderson, in a 2D strongly interacting non-fermi liquid system with some degree of disorder at T=0, the only known conducting state is a superconductor. Following this idea it has bee…
Following our previous investigations on superconductivity in amorphous carbon (aC) based systems; we have prepared thin composite aC-W films using electron-beam induced deposition. The films did not show any sign for superconductivity above 5 K. However, local, non-percolative, superconductivity emerged at Tc = 34.4 K after treatment with sulfur at 250 C for 24 hours. The superconducting features in the magnetization curves were by far sharper compared to our previous results, and the shielding fraction increased by about an order of magnitude. Our data suggest that pairing and localized supe…
The recent report of superconductivity under high pressure at the record transition temperature of Tc=203K in sulfur hydride has been identified as conventional in view of the observation of an isotope effect upon deuteration. Here it is demonstrated that conventional theories of superconductivity in the sense of BCS or Eliashberg formalisms can neither account for the observed values of Tc nor the pressure dependence of the isotope coefficient. The only way out of the dilemma is a multi-band approach of superconductivity where already small interband coupling suffices to achieve the high valu…
Sulfur-doped SnSe single crystal was successfully synthesized using a melt and slow-cooling method. The chemical composition and valence state of the obtained sample were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The pressure range of a diamond anvil cell with boron-doped diamond electrodes was upgraded to 104 GPa using nano-polycrystalline diamond anvil to investigate a pressure effect for the sample. Electrical resistivity measurements of sulfur-doped SnSe single crystal showed the insulator-metal-superconductor transition by applying high pressure up to 75.9 GPa.
We present detailed studies of the superconductivity in high-pressure H3S. X-ray diffraction measurements show that cubic Im-3m H3S was synthesized from elemental sulfur and hydrogen donor ammonia borane (NH3BH3). Our electrical transport measurements confirm superconductivity with a transition temperature Tc = 197 K at 153 GPa. From the analysis of both the normal state resistivity and the slope of the critical field, we conclude that the superconductivity is described by clean-limit behaviour. A significant broadening of the resistive transition in finite magnetic field is found, as expected…
Capitani and coworkers [1] reported that infrared optical reflectance measurements provided evidence for a superconducting transition in sulfur hydride [2] under 150 GPa pressure, and that the transition is driven by the electron-phonon interaction. Here we argue that the measured data did not provide evidence that the system undergoes a transition to a superconducting state, nor do the data support any role of phonons in driving a transition. Rather, the data are consistent with the system remaining in the normal state down to temperature 50K, the lowest temperature measured in the experiment…
Superconducting characteristics such as the Meissner-Ochsenfeld state, screening supercurrents and hysteresis loops of type-II superconductors were observed from the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the magnetic moment, m(T, H), in graphite powders reacted with sulfur for temperatures below 9.0 K. The temperature dependence of the lower critical field Hc1(T) was determined and the zero-temperature penetration depth, lambda(0), was estimated (lambda (0) = 227 nm). The superconductivity was observed to be highly anisotropic and to coexist with a ferromagnetic state that has a Curie …
The phenomenon of high temperature superconductivity, approaching room temperature, has been realized in a number of hydrogen-dominant alloy systems under high pressure conditions1-12. A significant discovery in reaching room temperature superconductivity is the photo-induced reaction of sulfur, hydrogen, and carbon that initially forms of van der Waals solids at sub-megabar pressures. Carbonaceous sulfur hydride has been demonstrated to be tunable with respect to carbon content, leading to different superconducting final states with different structural symmetries. A modulated AC susceptibili…
It is demonstrated that resistive transition at 203 K observed in metallic sulfur hydride system at high pressure can be magnetic (rather than superconducting (SC)) in nature. The onset temperature of genuine superconducting transition in these compounds appears to be essentially lower on temperature. The normal-state magnetic (AF SDW) phase transition preceding a superconducting one (Tc < Tm) is characteristic for HTSC cuprates, pnictides (selenides) and organic superconductors. The resistive drop is provided by disappearing of magnetic (AF spin fluctuation) scattering of conduction electrons…
The maximum critical temperature for superconductivity in pressurized hydrides appears at the top of superconducting domes in Tc versus pressure curves at a particular pressure, which is not predicted by standard superconductivity theories. The a high-order anisotropic van Hove singularity near the Fermi level observed in band structure calculations of pressurized sulfur hydride, typical of a supermetal, has been associated with the array of metallic hydrogen wires modules forming a nanoscale heterostructure at atomic limit called superstripes phase. Here we propose that pressurized sulfur hyd…
A recent experiment has shown a macroscopic quantum coherent condensate at 203 K, about 19 degrees above the coldest temperature recorded on the Earth, 184 K, in pressurized sulfur hydride. This discovery is relevant not only in material science and condensed matter but also in other fields ranging from quantum computing to quantum physics of living matter. It has given the start to a gold rush looking for other macroscopic quantum coherent condensates in hydrides at the temperature range of living matter 200<Tc<400K. We present here a review of the experimental results and the theoretical wor…
Recently, Snider et al (2020 Nature 586 373) reported on the observation of superconductivity in highly-compressed carbonaceous sulfur hydride, $H_x$$(S,C)_y$. The highest critical temperature in $H_x$$(S,C)_y$ by 5 K exceeds previous record of Tc = 280 K reported by Somayazulu et al (2019 Phys. Rev. Lett. 122 027001) for highly-compressed $La$$H_{10}$. In this paper we analyze experimental temperature dependent magnetoresistance data, R(T,B), reported by Snider et al. The analysis shows that $H_x$$(S,C)_y$ compound exhibited Tc = 190 K (P = 210 GPa) has the electron-phonon coupling constant $…
Emerets's experiments on pressurized sulfur hydride have shown that H3S metal has the highest known superconducting critical temperature Tc=203K. The Emerets data show pressure induced changes of the isotope coefficient between 0.25 and 0.5, in disagreement with Eliashberg theory which predicts a nearly constant isotope coefficient. We assign the pressure dependent isotope coefficient to Lifshitz transitions induced by pressure and zero point lattice fluctuations. It is known that pressure could induce changes of the topology of the Fermi surface, called Lifshitz transitions, but were neglecte…
Sulfur intercalated graphite composites with diamagnetic transitions at 6.7 K and 37 K are prepared. The magnetization hysteresis loops (MHL), Xray diffraction patterns, and resistance were measured. From the MHL, a slight superconducting like penetration process is observed at 15 K in low field region. The XRD shows no big difference from the mixture of graphite and sulfur indicating that the volume of the superconducting phase (if any) is very small. The temperature dependence of resistance shows a typical semiconducting behavior with a saturation in low temperature region. This saturation i…
Ytterbium (Yb) metal is divalent and nonmagnetic but would be expected under sufficient pressure to become trivalent and magnetic. We have carried out electrical resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements on Yb to pressures as high as 179 GPa over the temperature range 1.4 - 295 K. No evidence for magnetic order is observed. However, above 86 GPa Yb is found to become superconducting near 1.4 K with a transition temperature that increases monotonically with pressure to approximately 4.6 K at 179 GPa. Yb thus becomes the 54th known elemental superconductor.
The density functional theory for superconductors developed in the preceding article [cond-mat/0408685] is applied to the calculation of superconducting properties of several elemental metals. In particular, we present results for the transition temperature, for the gap at zero temperature, and for thermodynamic properties like the specific heat. We obtain an unprecedented agreement with experimental results. Superconductors both with strong and weak electron-phonon coupling are equally well described. This demonstrates that, as far as conventional superconductivity is concerned, the first-pri…
Traces of superconductivity (SC) at elevated temperatures (up to 65 K) were observed by magnetic measurements in three different inhomogeneous sulfur doped amorphous carbon (a-C) systems: (a) in commercial and (b) synthesized powders and (c) in a-C thin films. (a) Studies performed on commercial (a-C) powder which contains 0.21% of sulfur, revealed traces of non-percolated superconducting phases below Tc = 65 K. The SC volume fraction is enhanced by the sulfur doping. (b) a-C powder obtained by pyrolytic decomposition of sucrose did not show any sign for SC above 5 K. This powder was mixed wit…
Motivated by the recent report of superconductivity above 200 K in ultra-dense hydrogen sulfide, we search for high-\tc\ conventional superconductivity in the phase diagram of the binary Li-S system, using {\em ab-initio} methods for crystal structure prediction and linear response calculations for the electron-phonon coupling. We find that at pressures higher than 20 GPa, several new compositions, besides the known Li$_2$S, are stabilized; many exhibit electride-like {\em interstitial} charge localization observed in other alkali metal compounds. Of all predicted phases, only Li$_3$S at P > 6…
The unconventional multi-gap superconductivity in elemental Pb were reported previously by surface sensitive tunneling experiments, as well as predicted by several theory works. To obtain bulk evidence for such multiple gap behavior, the thermodynamic critical field $B_{\rm c}$ was measured along three different crystallographic directions ([100], [110], and [111]) in a high-quality Pb single crystal by means of muon spin rotation/relaxation. No difference in temperature evolution of $B_{\rm c}$ for all three directions was detected. The average reduced gap $α=Δ/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}=2.312(3)$ ($…
Due to its low atomic mass hydrogen is the most promising element to search for high-temperature phononic superconductors. However, metallic phases of hydrogen are only expected at extreme pressures (400 GPa or higher). The measurement of a record superconducting critical temperature of 190 K in a hydrogen-sulfur compound at 200 GPa of pressure[1], shows that metallization of hydrogen can be reached at significantly lower pressure by inserting it in the matrix of other elements. In this work we re-investigate the phase diagram and the superconducting properties of the H-S system by means of mi…
Using muon-spin rotation the pressure-induced superconductivity in the Bi-III phase of elemental Bismuth (transition temperature $T_{\rm c}\simeq7.05$ K) was investigated. The Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ=λ/ξ=30(6)$ ($λ$ is the magnetic penetration depth, $ξ$ is the coherence length) was estimated which is the highest among single element superconductors. The temperature dependence of the superconducting energy gap [$Δ(T)$] reconstructed from $λ^{-2}(T)$ deviates from the weak-coupled BCS prediction. The coupling strength $2Δ/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}\simeq 4.34$ was estimated thus implying that Bi-I…
The superconductivity of graphite-sulfur composites is highly anisotropic and associated with the graphite planes. The superconducting state coexists with the ferromagnetism of pure graphite, and a continuous crossover from superconducting to ferromagnetic-like behavior could be achieved by increasing the magnetic field or the temperature. The angular dependence of the magnetic moment m(alpha) provides evidence for an interaction between the ferromagnetic and the superconducting order parameters.
The rapid variation of the superconductivity Tc in hydride sulfur (H3S) under high pressure [A. Drozdov et al, Nature 525, 73 (2015); M. Einaga et al, arXiv: 1509.03156] in a vicinity Pcr=123GPa is interpreted in terms of the 1st order transition, possibly related to a CDW-instability with a non-zero structural vector. The superconductivity mechanisms in high-Tc phase be discussed, ordinary methods of calculating Tc are shown not applicable in H3S because, beside the acoustic branches, its phonon spectrum contains hydrogen modes with much higher frequency. A modified approach provides realisti…
Very high applied pressure induces superconductivity with the transition temperature ($T_c$) exceeding 19 K in elemental yttrium, but relatively little is known about the nature of that superconductivity. From point-contact spectroscopy (PCS) measurements in a diamond anvil cell (DAC), a strong enhancement in the differential conductance is revealed near the zero-biased voltage owing to Andreev reflection, a hallmark of the superconducting (SC) phase. Analysis of the PCS spectra based on the extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) model indicates two SC gaps at 48.6 GPa, where the large gap $Δ…
Room-temperature superconductivity was recently discovered in carbonaceous sulfur hydride (C-S-H) close to 3\,Mbar. We report significant differences in the superconducting response of C-S-H, with a maximum $T_{C}$ of 191(1)\,K, below a 1\,Mbar. Variations in intensity of the C-H Raman modes reveal carbon content can vary between crystals synthesized with the same photo-induced method. Synchrotron single crystal x-ray diffraction identifies polymorphism with increasing degrees of covalency. These unique metastable states are highly sensitive to thermodynamic pathways.
It has long remained elusive whether CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$ thiospinel shows bulk superconductivity. Here we clarify the issue by studying on the samples of sulfur-deficient CuCo$_{2}$S$_{3.7}$ and sulfurized CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$. The sample CuCo$_{2}$S$_{3.7}$ has a smaller lattice constant of $a=9.454$ Å, and it is not superconducting down to 1.8 K. After a full sulfurization, the $a$ axis of the thiospinel phase increases to 9.475 Å, and the thiospinel becomes nearly stoichiometric CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$, although a secondary phase of slightly Cu-doped CoS$_2$ forms. Bulk superconductivity at 4.2 K and …
Recently, an extremely high superconducting temperature (Tc) of ~200 K has been reported in the sulfur hydride system above 100 GPa. This result is supported by theoretical predictions and verified experimentally. The crystal structure of the superconducting phase was also identified experimentally, confirming the theoretically predicted structure as well as a decomposition mechanism from H2S to H3S+S. Even though nuclear resonant scattering has been successfully used to provide magnetic evidence for a superconducting state, a direct measurement of the important Meissner effect is still lackin…
We report a record high superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\rm c}$) up to 23.6 K under high pressure in the elemental metal Ti, one of the top ten most abundant elements in Earth's crust. The $T_{\rm c}$ increases monotonically from 2.3 K at 40.3 GPa to 23.6 K at 144.9 GPa, which surpasses all known records from elemental metals reported so far. With further compression, a robust $T_{\rm c}$ of ~23 K is observed between 144.9 and 183 GPa in the $δ$-Ti phase. The pressure-dependent $T_{\rm c}$ can be well described by the conventional electron-phonon coupling (EPC) mechanism. Density F…
The long-sought goal of room-temperature superconductivity has reportedly recently been realized in a carbonaceous sulfur hydride compound under high pressure, as reported by Snider et al. [1]. The evidence presented in that paper is stronger than in other similar recent reports of high temperature superconductivity in hydrides under high pressure [2-7], and has been received with universal acclaim [8-10]. Here we point out that features of the experimental data shown in Ref. [1] indicate that the phenomenon observed in that material is not superconductivity. This observation calls into questi…
Recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity (Tc = 190 K) in sulfur hydrides at megabar pressures breaks the traditional belief on the Tc limit of 40 K for conventional superconductors, and open up the doors in searching new high-temperature superconductors in compounds made up of light elements. Selenium is a sister and isoelectronic element of sulfur, with a larger atomic core and a weaker electronegativity. Whether selenium hydrides share similar high-temperature superconductivity remains elusive, but it is a subject of considerable interest. First-principles swarm structure predi…
The multiple scattering-based theory of Gaspari and Gyorffy for the electron-ion matrix element in close packed metals is applied to Im-3m H3S, which has been predicted by Duan {\it et al.} and Bernstein {\it et al} to be the stable phase at this stoichiometry around 190 GPa, thus is the leading candidate to be the phase observed to superconduct at 190K by Drozdov, Eremets, and Troyan. The nearly perfect separation of vibrational modes into those of S and of H character provides a simplification that enables identification of contributions of the two atoms separately. The picture that arises i…
The application of the muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) technique for studying type-I superconductivity is discussed. In the intermediate state, i.e. when a type-I superconducting sample with non-zero demagnetization factor $N$ is separated into normal state and Meissner state (superconducting) domains, the $μ$SR technique allows to determine with very high precision the value of the thermodynamic critical field $B_{\rm c}$, as well as the volume of the sample in the normal and the superconducting state. Due to the microscopic nature of $μ$SR technique, the $B_{\rm c}$ values are determin…
A new experimental study by Snider et al. [Nature 586, 373-377 (2020)] reported behavior in a high-pressure carbon-sulfur-hydrogen system that has been interpreted by the authors as superconductivity at room temperature. The sudden drop of electrical resistance at a critical temperature and the change of the R vs. T behavior with an applied magnetic field point to superconductivity. This is a very exciting study in one of the most important areas of science, hence, it is crucial for the community to investigate these findings and hopefully reproduce these results. In this comment, we present c…
The momentum and temperature dependence of the lifetimes of acoustic phonons in the elemental superconductors Pb and Nb was determined by resonant spin-echo spectroscopy with neutrons. In both elements, the superconducting energy gap extracted from these measurements was found to converge with sharp anomalies originating from Fermi-surface nesting (Kohn anomalies) at low temperatures. The results indicate electron many-body correlations beyond the standard theoretical framework for conventional superconductivity. A possible mechanism is the interplay between superconductivity and spin- or char…
This article reports the experimentally clarified crystal structure of a recently discovered sulfur hydride in high temperature superconducting phase which has the highest critical temperature Tc over 200 K which has been ever reported. For understanding the mechanism of the high superconductivity, the information of its crystal structure is very essential. Herein we have carried out the simultaneous measurements electrical resistance and synchrotron x-ray diffraction under high pressure, and clearly revealed that the hydrogen sulfide, H2S, decomposes to H3S and its crystal structure has body-…
The observed "simple cubic" (sc) phase of elemental Ca at room temperature in the 32-109 GPa range is, from linear response calculations, dynamically unstable. By comparing first principle calculations of the enthalpy for five sc-related (non-close-packed) structures, we find that all five structures compete energetically at room temperature in the 40-90 GPa range, and three do so in the 100-130 GPa range. Some competing structures below 90 GPa are dynamically stable, i.e., no imaginary frequency, suggesting that these sc-derived short-range-order local structures exist locally and can account…
The recent discovery of superconductivity at 190~K in highly compressed H$_{2}$S is spectacular not only because it sets a record high critical temperature, but because it does so in a material that appears to be, and we argue here that it is, a conventional strong-coupling BCS superconductor. Intriguingly, superconductivity in the observed pressure and temperature range was predicted theoretically in a similar compound H$_{3}$S. Several important questions about this remarkable result, however, are left unanswered: (1) Does the stoichiometry of the superconducting compound differ from the nom…
The recent reports on high-temperature superconductivity above 190 K in hydrogen sulfide at 200 GPa pressure, exceeding all previously discovered superconductors, has greatly invigorated the interest in dense hydrogen-rich solids. In this paper, we investigate a possible way to optimize the critical temperature in these compounds using first-principles linear-response calculations. We construct hypothetical alchemical atoms to smoothly interpolate between elements of the chalcogen group and study their bonding and superconducting properties. Our results show that the already remarkable critica…
A quaternary compound Bi3O2S2Cl, which consists of novel [BiS2Cl]2-layers, is reported. It adopts a layered structure of the space group I4/mmm (No. 139) with lattice parameters: a = 3.927(1) Å, c = 21.720(5) Å. In this compound, bismuth and chlorine atoms form an infinite planar layer, which is unique among the bismuth halides. Superconductivity is observed in both polycrystals and single crystals, and is significantly enhanced in the samples prepared with less sulfur or at higher temperatures. By tuning the content of sulfur, Bi3O2S2Cl can be converted from a semiconductor into a superconduc…
The recent reports on 203 K superconductivity in compressed hydrogen sulfide, H$_3$S, has attracted great interest in sulfur-hydrogen system under high pressure. Here, we investigated the superconductivity of P-doped and Cl-doped H$_3$S using the first-principles calculations based on the supercell method, which gives more reliable results on the superconductivity in doped systems than the calculations based on the virtual crystal approximation reported earlier. The superconducting critical temperature is increased from 189 to 212 K at 200 GPa in a cubic $Im\bar{3}m$ phase by the 6.25 % P dopi…
The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in single-layer iron selenide has generated significant experimental interest for optimizing the superconducting properties of iron-based superconductors through the lattice modification. For simulating the similar effect by changing the chemical composition due to S doping, we investigate the superconducting properties of high-quality single crystals of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ ($x$=0, 0.04, 0.09, and 0.11) using magnetization, resistivity, the London penetration depth, and low temperature specific heat measurements. We show that the intro…
One of interesting open questions for the high transition temperature (Tc) superconductivity in sulfur hydrides is why high pressure phases of H3S have extremely high Tc's. Recently, it has been pointed out that the presence of the van Hove singularities (vHs) around the Fermi level is crucial. However, while there have been quantitative estimates of Tc based on the Migdal-Eliashberg theory, the energy dependence of the density of states (DOS) has been neglected to simplify the Eliashberg equation. In this study, we go beyond the constant DOS approximation and explicitly consider the electroni…
The superconductivity in the Bi-II phase of elemental Bismuth (transition temperature $T_{\rm c}\simeq3.92$ K at pressure $p\simeq 2.80$ GPa) was studied experimentally by means of the muon-spin rotation as well as theoretically by using the Eliashberg theory in combination with Density Functional Theory calculations. Experiments reveal that Bi-II is a type-I superconductor with a zero temperature value of the thermodynamic critical field $B_{\rm c}(0)\simeq31.97$~mT. The Eliashberg theory approach provides a good agreement with the experimental $T_{\rm c}$ and the temperature evolution of $B_…
Pressure-induced superconductivity and structural phase transitions in phosphorous (P) are studied by resistivity measurements under pressures up to 170 GPa and fully $ab-initio$ crystal structure and superconductivity calculations up to 350 GPa. Two distinct superconducting transition temperature (T$_{c}$) vs. pressure ($P$) trends at low pressure have been reported more than 30 years ago, and for the first time we are able to reproduce them and devise a consistent explanation founded on thermodynamically metastable phases of black-phosphorous. Our experimental and theoretical results form a …
Using a membrane-driven diamond anvil cell and both ac magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements, we have characterized the superconducting phase diagram of elemental barium to pressures as high as 65 GPa. We have determined the superconducting properties of the recently discovered Ba-VI crystal structure, which can only be accessed via the application of pressure at low temperature. We find that Ba-VI exhibits a maximum Tc near 8 K, which is substantially higher than the maximum Tc found when pressure is applied at room temperature.
For certain complex superconducting systems, the superconducting properties get enhanced under mesoscopic point contacts made of elemental non-superconducting metals. However, understanding of the mechanism through which such contact induced local enhancement of superconductivity happens has been limited due to the complex nature of such compounds. In this paper we present giant enhancement of superconducting transition temperature (T$_c$) and superconducting energy gap ($Δ$) in a simple elemental superconductor Zr. While bulk Zr shows a critical temperature around 0.6\,K, superconductivity su…
