For the 3D compressible isentropic Euler equations with an initial perturbation of size $\ve$ of a rest state, if the initial vorticity is of size $\dl$ with $0<\dl\le \ve$ and $\ve$ is small, we establish that the lifespan of the smooth solutions is $T_{\dl}=O(\min\{e^\frac{1}{\ve},\frac{1}δ\})$ for the polytropic gases, and $T_{\dl}=O(\frac{1}δ)$ for the Chaplygin gases. For example, when $\dl=e^{-\f{1}{\ve^2}}$ is chosen, then $T_{\dl}=O(e^{\f{1}{\ve}})$ for the polytropic gases and $T_{\dl}=O(e^{\f{1}{\ve^2}})$ for the Chaplygin gases although the perturbations of the initial density and the divergence of the initial velocity are only of order $O(\ve)$. Our result illustrates that the time of existence of smooth solutions depends crucially on the size of the vorticity of the initial data, as long as the initial data is sufficiently close to a constant. The main ingredients in the paper are: introducing some suitably weighted energies, deriving the pointwise space-time decay estimates of solutions, looking for the good unknown instead of the velocity, and establishing the required weighted estimates on the vorticty.
In this paper we prove the local well-posedness (LWP) for the 3D compressible Euler equations describing the motion of a liquid in an unbounded initial domain with moving boundary. The liquid is under the influence of gravity but without surface tension, and it is not assumed to be irrotational. We apply the tangential smoothing method introduced in [10,11] to construct the approximation system with energy estimates uniform in the smooth parameter. It should be emphasized that, when doing the nonlinear a priori estimates, we need neither the higher order wave equation of the pressure and delic…
We prove a priori estimates for the compressible Euler equations modeling the motion of a liquid with moving physical vacuum boundary in an unbounded initial domain. The liquid is under influence of gravity but without surface tension. Our fluid is not assumed to be irrotational. But the physical sign condition needs to be assumed on the free boundary. We generalize the method used in \cite{LL} to prove the energy estimates in an unbounded domain up to arbitrary order. To our knowledge, this result appears to be the first that concerns a priori energy bounds for the compressible water wave. In…
In this paper, we numerically study a class of solutions with spiraling singularities in vorticity for two-dimensional, inviscid, compressible Euler systems, where the initial data have an algebraic singularity in vorticity at the origin. These are different from the multi-dimensional Riemann problems widely studied in the literature. Our computations provide numerical evidence of the existence of initial value problems with multiple solutions, thus revealing a fundamental obstruction toward the well-posedness of the governing equations. The compressible Euler equations are solved using the po…
We study the Cauchy problem for the compressible Euler equations in two spatial dimensions under any physical barotropic equation of state except that of a Chaplygin gas. We prove that the well-known phenomenon of shock formation in simple plane wave solutions, starting from smooth initial conditions, is stable under perturbations that break the plane symmetry. Moreover, we provide a sharp asymptotic description of the singularity formation. The new feature of our work is that the perturbed solutions are allowed to have small but non-zero vorticity, even at the location of the shock. Thus, our…
This paper is devoted to the study of the low Mach number limit for the 2D isentropic Euler system associated to ill-prepared initial data with slow blow up rate on $\log\varepsilon^{-1}$. We prove in particular the strong convergence to the solution of the incompressible Euler system when the vorticity belongs to some weighted $BMO$ spaces allowing unbounded functions. The proof is based on the extension of the result of \cite{B-K} to a compressible transport model.
The well-posedness of Cauchy problem of 3D compressible Euler equations is studied. By using Smith-Tataru's approach \cite{ST}, we prove the local existence, uniqueness and stability of solutions for Cauchy problem of 3D compressible Euler equations, where the initial data of velocity, density, specific vorticity $v, ρ\in H^s, \varpi \in H^{s_0} (2<s_0<s)$. It's an alternative and simplified proof of the result given by Q. Wang in \cite{WQEuler}.
In this paper, we establish new $L^p$ gradient estimates of the solutions in order to discuss Cauchy problem for the full compressible magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) systems in $\mathrm{R}^3$. We use the "$\rm{div}-\rm{curl}$" decomposition technique (see \cite{{HJR},{MR}}) and new modified effective viscous flux and vorticity to calculate "$\Vert\nabla \mathbf{u}\Vert_{L^3}$" and "$\Vert\nabla \mathbb{H}\Vert_{L^3}$".As a result, we obtain global well-posedness for the solution with the initial data being in a class of space with lower regularity, while the energy of which should be suitably small.
We address the structural stability of 3-D axisymmetric subsonic flows with nonzero swirl for the steady compressible Euler-Poisson system in a cylinder supplemented with non small boundary data. A special Helmholtz decomposition of the velocity field is introduced for 3-D axisymmetric flow with a nonzero swirl(=angular momentum density) component. With the newly introduced decomposition, a quasilinear elliptic system of second order is derived from the elliptic modes in Euler-Poisson system for subsonic flows. Due to the nonzero swirl, the main difficulties lie in the solvability of a singula…
In this paper, we investigate linear stability properties of the 2D isentropic compressible Euler equations linearized around a shear flow given by a monotone profile, close to the Couette flow, with constant density, in the domain $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. We begin by directly investigating the Couette shear flow, where we characterize the linear growth of the compressible part of the fluid while proving time decay for the incompressible part (inviscid damping with slower rates). Then we extend the analysis to monotone shear flows near Couette, where we are able to give an upper bound, s…
We prove the local-in-time well-posedness for the solution of the compressible Euler equations in $3$-D, for the Cauchy data of the velocity, density and vorticity $(v,\varrho, \fw) \in H^s\times H^s\times H^{s'}$, $2<s'<s$. The classical local well-posedness result for the compressible Euler equations in $3$-D holds for the initial data $v, \varrho \in H^{s+\f12},\, s>2$. Due to the works of Smith-Tataru and Wang for the irrotational isentropic case, the local well-posedness can be achieved if the data satisfy $v, \varrho \in H^{s}$, with $s>2$. In the incompressible case the solution is prov…
We derive a new formulation of the compressible Euler equations exhibiting remarkable structures, including surprisingly good null structures. The new formulation comprises covariant wave equations for the Cartesian components of the velocity and the logarithmic density coupled to a transport equation for the specific vorticity, defined to be vorticity divided by density. The equations allow one to use the full power of the geometric vectorfield method in treating the "wave part" of the system. A crucial feature of the new formulation is that all derivative-quadratic inhomogeneous terms verify…
We prove a series of results tied to the regularity and geometry of solutions to the $3D$ compressible Euler equations with vorticity and entropy. Our framework exploits and reveals additional virtues of a recent new formulation of the equations, which decomposed the flow into a geometric "(sound) wave-part" coupled to a "transport-div-curl-part" (transport-part for short), with both parts exhibiting remarkable properties. Our main result is that the time of existence can be controlled in terms of the $H^{2^+}(\mathbb{R}^3)$-norm of the wave-part of the initial data and various Sobolev and Höl…
In this paper we give a new formulation of the compressible Navier-Stokes by introducing an suitable effective velocity $v=u+\n\va(ρ)$ provided that the viscosity coefficients verify the algebraic relation of \cite{BD}. We give in particular a very simple proof of the entropy discovered in \cite{BD}, in addition our argument show why the algebraic relation of \cite{BD} appears naturally. More precisely the system reads in a very surprising way as two parabolic equation on the density $ρ$ and the vorticity ${\rm curl}v$, and as a transport equation on the divergence ${\rm div}v$. We show the ex…
We consider the 2D isentropic compressible Euler equations, with pressure law $p(ρ) = (\sfrac{1}γ) ρ^γ$, with $γ>1$. We provide an elementary constructive proof of shock formation from smooth initial datum of finite energy, with no vacuum regions, and with {nontrivial vorticity}. We prove that for initial data which has minimum slope $- {\sfrac{1}{ \eps}}$, for $ \eps>0$ taken sufficiently small relative to the $\OO(1)$ amplitude, there exist smooth solutions to the Euler equations which form a shock in time $\OO(\eps)$. The blowup time and location can be explicitly computed and solutions at …
We consider the 3D isentropic compressible Euler equations with the ideal gas law. We provide a constructive proof of shock formation from smooth initial datum of finite energy, with no vacuum regions, with nontrivial vorticity present at the shock, and under no symmetry assumptions. We prove that for an open set of Sobolev-class initial data which are a small $L^ \infty $ perturbation of a constant state, there exist smooth solutions to the Euler equations which form a generic stable shock in finite time. The blow up time and location can be explicitly computed, and solutions at the blow up t…
We derive a new formulation of the $3D$ compressible Euler equations with dynamic entropy exhibiting remarkable null structures and regularity properties. Our results hold for an arbitrary equation of state (which yields the pressure in terms of the density and the entropy) in non-vacuum regions where the speed of sound is positive. Our work is an extension of our prior joint work with J. Luk, in which we derived a similar new formulation in the special case of a barotropic fluid, that is, when the equation of state depends only on the density. The new formulation comprises covariant wave equa…
We establish the existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions with large vorticity and weak solutions with vortex sheets/entropy waves for the steady Euler equations for both compressible and incompressible fluids in arbitrary infinitely long nozzles. We first develop a new approach to establish the existence of smooth solutions without assumptions on the sign of the second derivatives of the horizontal velocity, or the Bernoulli and entropy functions, at the inlet for the smooth case. Then the existence for the smooth case can be applied to construct approximate solutions to establish the exi…
We derive new, localized geometric integral identities for solutions to the $3D$ compressible Euler equations under an arbitrary equation of state when the sound speed is positive. The identities are coercive in the first derivatives of the specific vorticity and the second derivatives of the entropy, and the error terms exhibit remarkable regularity and null structures. Our framework allows one to simultaneously unleash the full power of the geometric vectorfield method for both the wave- and transport- parts of the flow on compact regions. In particular, the integral identities yield localiz…
A compactness framework is formulated for the incompressible limit of approximate solutions with weak uniform bounds with respect to the adiabatic exponent for the steady Euler equations for compressible fluids in any dimension. One of our main observations is that the compactness can be achieved by using only natural weak estimates for the mass conservation and the vorticity. Another observation is that the incompressibility of the limit for the homentropic Euler flow is directly from the continuity equation, while the incompresibility of the limit for the full Euler flow is from a combinatio…
We show the short-time existence and nonlinear stability of vortex sheets for the nonisentropic compressible Euler equations in two spatial dimensions, based on the weakly linear stability result of Morando--Trebeschi (2008) [20]. The missing normal derivatives are compensated through the equations of the linearized vorticity and entropy when deriving higher-order energy estimates. The proof of the resolution for this nonlinear problem follows from certain \emph{a priori} tame estimates on the effective linear problem {in the usual Sobolev spaces} and a suitable Nash--Moser iteration scheme.
We establish rigorously the existence of a three-parameter family of self-similar,globally bounded, and continuous weak solutions in two space dimensions to the compressible Euler equations with axisymmetry for gamma-law polytropic gases with gamma between 1 and 2, including 1. The initial data of these solutions have constant densities and outward-swirling velocities. We use the axisymmetry and self-similarity assumptions to reduce the equations to a system of three ordinary differential equations, from which we obtain detailed structures of solutions besides their existence. These solutions …
A compactness framework is established for approximate solutions to subsonic-sonic flows governed by the steady full Euler equations for compressible fluids in arbitrary dimension. The existing compactness frameworks for the two-dimensional irrotational case do not directly apply for the steady full Euler equations in higher dimensions. The new compactness framework we develop applies for both non-homentropic and rotational flows. One of our main observations is that the compactness can be achieved by using only natural weak estimates for the mass balance and the vorticity, along with the Bern…
We study the Cauchy problem for the $3D$ compressible Euler equations under an arbitrary equation of state with positive speed of sound, aside from that of a Chaplygin gas. For open sets of smooth initial data with non-trivial vorticity and entropy, our main results yield a constructive proof of the formation, structure, and stability of the singular boundary, which is the set of points where the solution forms a shock singularity, i.e., where some first-order Cartesian coordinate partial derivatives of the velocity and density blow up. We prove that in the solution regime under study, the sin…
Two prized papers, one by Augustin Cauchy in 1815, presented to the French Academy and the other by Hermann Hankel in 1861, presented to Göttingen University, contain major discoveries on vorticity dynamics whose impact is now quickly increasing. Cauchy found a Lagrangian formulation of 3D ideal incompressible flow in terms of three invariants that generalize to three dimensions the now well-known law of conservation of vorticity along fluid particle trajectories for two-dimensional flow. This has very recently been used to prove analyticity in time of fluid particle trajectories for 3D incomp…
We prove that the divergence-free component of the compressible Euler equations with solid-wall boundary condition converges strongly towards the incompressible Euler equations at the same order as the Mach number. General initial data are considered and are not necessarily close to the divergence-free state. Thus, large amplitude of fast oscillations persist and interact through nonlinear coupling without any dissipative or dispersive mechanism. It is then shown, however, that the contribution from fast oscillations to the slow dynamics through nonlinear coupling is of the same order as the M…
The existence and uniqueness of two dimensional steady compressible Euler flows past a wall or a symmetric body are established. More precisely, given positive convex horizontal veloicty in the upstream, there exists a critical value $ρ_{cr}$ such that if the incoming density in the upstream is larger than $ρ_{cr}$, then there exists a subsonic flow past a wall. Furthermore, $ρ_{cr}$ is critical in the sense that there is no such subsonic flow if the density of the incoming flow is less than $ρ_{cr}$. The subsonic flows possess large vorticity and positive horizontal velocity above the wall ex…
