The Painlevé equations are here connected to other classes of equations with the Painlevé Property (Ince's equations) by the same degeneracy procedure that connects the Painlevé equations (coalescence). These Ince's equations here are also connected among themselves like in the traditional Painlevé's coalescence cascade. Such degeneracy is considered also for the special equations, symmetric equations and Bäcklund transformations.
We extend Painlevé IV model by adding quadratic terms to its Hamiltonian obtaining two classes of models (coalescence and deformation) that interpolate between Painlevé IV and II equations for special limits of the underlying parameters. We derive the underlying Bäcklund transformations, symmetry structure and requirements to satisfy Painlevé property.
A determinant formula for a class of algebraic solutions to Painlevé VI equation (P$_{\rm VI}$) is presented. This expression is regarded as a special case of the universal characters. The entries of the determinant are given by the Jacobi polynomials. Degeneration to the rational solutions of P$_{\rm V}$ and P$_{\rm III}$ is discussed by applying the coalescence procedure. Relationship between Umemura polynomials associated with P$_{\rm VI}$ and our formula is also discussed.
Starting from the standard form of the five discrete Painlevé equations we show how one can obtain (through appropriate limits) a host of new equations which are also the discrete analogues of the continuous Painlevé equations. A particularly interesting technique is the one based on the assumption that some simplification takes place in the autonomous form of the mapping following which the deautonomization leads to a new $n$-dependence and introduces more new discrete Painlevé equations.
In this paper, we study a well known asymptotic limit in which the second Painlevé equation (P_II) becomes the first Painlevé equation (P_I). The limit preserves the Painlevé property (i.e. that all movable singularities of all solutions are poles). Indeed it has been commonly accepted that the movable simple poles of opposite residue of the generic solution of P_{II} must coalesce in the limit to become movable double poles of the solutions of P_I, even though the limit naively carried out on the Laurent expansion of any solution of P_{II} makes no sense. Here we show rigorously that a coales…
We present a determinant expression for a family of classical transcendental solutions of the Painlevé V and the Painlevé VI equation. Degeneration of these solutions along the process of coalescence for the Painlevé equations is discussed.
A determinant expression for the rational solutions of the Painlevé III (P$_{\rm III}$) equation whose entries are the Laguerre polynomials is given. Degeneration of this determinant expression to that for the rational solutions of P$_{\rm II}$ is discussed by applying the coalescence procedure.
Starting from integrable cellular automata we present a novel form of Painlevé equations. These equations are discrete in both the independent variable and the dependent one. We show that they capture the essence of the behavior of the Painlevé equations organizing themselves into a coalescence cascade and possessing special solutions. A necessary condition for the integrability of cellular automata is also presented.
Four 4-dimensional Painlevé-type equations are obtained by isomonodromic deformation of Fuchsian equations: they are the Garnier system in two variables, the Fuji-Suzuki system, the Sasano system, and the sixth matrix Painlevé system. Degenerating these four source equations, we systematically obtained other 4-dimensional Painlevé-type equations. If we only consider Painlevé-type equations whose associated linear equations are of unramified type, there are 22 types of 4-dimensional Painlevé-type equations: 9 of them are partial differential equations, 13 of them are ordinary differential equat…
A class of classical solutions to the $q$-Painlevé equation of type $(A_1+A_1')^{(1)}$ (a $q$-difference analog of the Painlevé II equation) is constructed in a determinantal form with basic hypergeometric function elements. The continuous limit of this $q$-Painlevé equation to the Painlevé II equation and its hypergeometric solutions are discussed. The continuous limit of these hypergeometric solutions to the Airy function is obtained through a uniform asymptotic expansion of their integral representation.
An ultradiscrete system corresponding to the $q$-Painlevé equation of type $A_6^{(1)}$, which is a $q$-difference analogue of the second Painlevé equation, is proposed. Exact solutions with two parameters are constructed for the ultradiscrete system.
We consider the q-Painlevé equation of type $A_4^{(1)}$ (a version of q-Painlevé V equation) and construct a family of solutions expressible in terms of certain basic hypergeometric series. We also present the determinant formula for the solutions.
We consider the generalized Painlevé--Ince equation, \begin{equation*} \ddot{x}+αx\dot{x}+βx^{3}=0 \end{equation*} and we perform a detailed study in terms of symmetry analysis and of the singularity analysis. When the free parameters are related as $β=α^{2}/9~$the given differential equation is maximally symmetric and well-known that it pass the Painlevé test. For arbitrary parameters we find that there exists only two Lie point symmetries which can be used to reduce the differential equation into an algebraic equation. However, the generalized Painlevé--Ince equation fails at the Painlevé te…
Hypergeometric solutions to the q-Painlevé equations are constructed by direct linearization of disrcrete Riccati equations. The decoupling factors are explicitly determined so that the linear systems give rise to q-hypergeometric equations.
In this paper, we classify all values of the parameters $α$, $β$, $γ$ and $δ$ of the Painlevé VI equation such that there are rational solutions. We give a formula for them up to the birational canonical transformations and the symmetries of the Painlevé VI equation.
One of the authors has recently introduced the concept of conjugate Hamiltonian systems: the solution of the equation $h=H(p,q,t),$ where $H$ is a given Hamiltonian containing $t$ explicitly, yields the function $t=T(p,q,h)$, which defines a new Hamiltonian system with Hamiltonian $T$ and independent variable $h.$ By employing this construction and by using the fact that the classical Painlevé equations are Hamiltonian systems, it is straightforward to associate with each Painlevé equation two new integrable ODEs. Here, we investigate the conjugate Painlevé II equations. In particular, for the…
A class of special solutions are constructed in an intuitive way for the ultradiscrete analog of $q$-Painlevé II ($q$-PII) equation. The solutions are classified into four groups depending on the function-type and the system parameter.
We discuss the relationship between the recurrence coefficients of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a semi-classical Laguerre weight and classical solutions of the fourth Painlevé equation. We show that the coefficients in these recurrence relations can be expressed in terms of Wronskians of parabolic cylinder functions which arise in the description of special function solutions of the fourth Painlevé equation.
We give Bäcklund transformations for first and second Painlevé hierarchies. These Bäcklund transformations are generalization of known Bäcklund transformations of the first and second Painlevé equations and they relate the considered hierarchies to new hierarchies of Painlevé-type equations.
We present the discrete, q-, form of the Painlevé VI equation written as a three-point mapping and analyse the structure of its singularities. This discrete equation goes over to P_{VI} at the continuous limit and degenerates towards the discrete q-P_{V} through coalescence. It possesses special solutions in terms of the q-hypergeometric function. It can bilinearised and, under the appropriate assumptions, ultradiscretised. A new discrete form for P_{V} is also obtained which is of difference type, in contrast with the `standard' form of the discrete P_{V}. Finally, we present the `asymmetric'…
We examine quantum extensions of the continuous Painlevé equations, expressed as systems of first-order differential equations for non-commuting objects. We focus on the Painlevé equations II, IV and V. From their auto-Bäcklund transformations we derive the contiguity relations which we interpret as the quantum analogues of the discrete Painlevé equations.
In this paper some open problems for Painlevé equations are discussed. In particular the following open problems are described: (i) the Painlevé equivalence problem; (ii) notation for solutions of the Painlevé equations; (iii) numerical solution of Painlevé equations; and (iv) the classification of properties of Painlevé equations.
All $q$-Painlevé equations which are obtained from the $q$-analog of the sixth Painlevé equation are expressed in a Lax formalism. They are characterized by the data of the associated linear $q$-difference equations. The degeneration pattern from the $q$-Painlevé equation of type $A_2$ is also presented.
Two-component hyperbolic system of equations generated by ordinary differential Painlevé I \[ u_{yy}=6u^2+y \] and Painlevé III \[ yuu_{yy}=yu^2_{y}-uu_y+δy+βu+αu^3 +γyu^4 \] equations are considered, where $α, β, γ, δ$ are complex numbers. The structure of characteristic Lie rings is studied and higher symmetries of Lie-Bäcklund are obtained.
We examine by singularity analysis an equation derived by reduction using Lie point symmetries from the Euler--Bernoulli Beam equation which is the Painlevé--Ince Equation with additional terms. The equation possesses the same leading-order behaviour and resonances as the Painlevé--Ince Equation and has a Right Painlevé Series. However, it has no Left Painlev% é Series. A conjecture for the existence of Left Painlevé Series for ordinary differential equations is given.
It is known that discrete Painlevé equations have symmetries of the affine Weyl groups. In this paper we propose a new representation of discrete Painlevé equations in which the symmetries become clearly visible. We know how to obtain discrete Painlevé equations from certain rational surfaces in connection with the extended affine Weyl groups. By means of this representation, we clarify the relation between the equation and the surface.
Given the second order scalar Lax pair of the sixth Painlevé equation, we build a generalized heat equation with rational coefficients which does not depend any more on the Painlevé variable. Étant donné la paire de Lax scalaire de la sixième équation de Painlevé, nous donnons une construction directe de l'équation de la chaleur généralisée à coefficients rationnels qui ne dépend plus de la variable de Painlevé.
We establish interpolation problems related to all the $q$-Painlevé equations of types from $E_7^{(1)}$ to $(A_2+A_1)^{(1)}$. By solving those problems, we can derive the evolution equations, the scalar Lax pairs and the determinant formulae of special solutions for the corresponding $q$-Painlevé equations.
It is well known that isomonodromic deformations admit a Hamiltonian description. These Hamiltonians appear as coefficients of the characteristic equations of their Lax matrices, which define spectral curves for linear systems of differential and difference systems. The characteristic equations in the case of the associated linear problems for various discrete Painlevé equations is biquadratic in the Painlevé variables. We show that the discrete isomonodromic deformations that define the discrete Painlevé equations may be succinctly described in terms of the characteristic equation of their La…
An ultradiscrete analog of the Bessel function is constructed by taking the ultradiscrete limit for a $q$-difference analog of the Bessel function. Then, a direct relationship between a class of special solutions for the ultradiscrete Painlevé III equation and those of the discrete Painlevé III equation which have a determinantal structure is established.
We consider the Hankel determinant representation for the rational solutions of the Painlevé II equation. We give an explicit formula for the generating function of the entries in terms of logarithmic derivative of the Airy function, which by itself is a particular solution of the Painlevé II equation.
In this paper we study different Hamiltonian systems with polynomial and rational Hamiltonians associated with the generic third Painlevé equation and present explicit birational transformations relating them.
We give an explicit determinant formula for a class of rational solutions of a q-analogue of the Painlevé V equation. The entries of the determinant are given by the continuous q-Laguerre polynomials.
In this paper classical solutions of the degenerate fifth Painlevé equation are classified, which include hierarchies of algebraic solutions and solutions expressible in terms of Bessel functions. Solutions of the degenerate fifth Painlevé equation are known to expressible in terms of the third Painlevé equation. Two applications of these classical solutions are discussed, deriving exact solutions of the complex sine-Gordon equation and of the coefficients in the three-term recurrence relation associated with generalised Charlier polynomials.
We wish to explore a link between the Lax integrability of the $q$-Painlevé equations and the symmetries of the $q$-Painlevé equations. We shall demonstrate that the connection preserving deformations that give rise to the $q$-Painlevé equations may be thought of as elements of the groups of Schlesinger transformations of their associated linear problems. These groups admit a very natural lattice structure. Each Schlesinger transformation induces a Bäcklund transformation of the $q$-Painlevé equation. Each translational Bäcklund transformation may be lifted to the level of the associated linea…
We present a Lax pair for the sixth Painlevé equation arising as a continuous isomonodromic deformation of a system of linear difference equations with an additional symmetry structure. We call this a symmetric difference-differential Lax pair. We show how the discrete isomonodromic deformations of the associated linear problem gives us a discrete version of the fifth Painlevé equation. By considering degenerations we obtain symmetric difference-differential Lax pairs for the fifth Painlevé equation and the various degenerate versions of the third Painlevé equation.
We present a special solutions of the discrete Painlevé equations associated with $A_0^{(1)}$, $A_0^{(1)*}$ and $A_0^{(1)**}$-surface. These solutions can be expressed by solutions of linear difference equations. Here the $A_0^{(1)}$-surface discrete Painlevé equation is the most generic difference equation, as all discrete Painlevé equations can be obtained by its degeneration limit. These special solutions exist when the parameters of the discrete Painlevé equation satisfy a particular constraint. We consider that these special functions belong to the hypergeometric family although they seem…
We study Padé interpolation problems on an additive grid, related to additive difference ($d$-) Painlevé equations of type $E_7^{(1)}$, $E_6^{(1)}$, $D_4^{(1)}$ and $A_3^{(1)}$. By choosing suitable Padé problems, we can derive time evolution equations, scalar Lax pairs of contiguous type and determinant formulae of special solutions given in terms of hypergeometric functions, for the corresponding $d$-Painlevé equations.
Fourth - order analogue to the second Painlevé equation is studied. This equation has its origin in the modified Korteveg - de Vries equation of the fifth order when we look for its self - similar solution. All power and non - power expansions of the solutions for the fouth - order analogue to the second Painlevé equation near points $z=0$ and $z=\infty$ are found by means of the power geometry method. The exponential additions to solutions of the equation studied are determined. Comparison of the expansions found with those of the six Painlevé equations confirm the conjecture that the fourth …
We derive integrable discrete systems which are contiguity relations of two equations in the Painlevé-Gambier classification depending on some parameter. These studies extend earlier work where the contiguity relations for the six transcendental Painlevé equations were obtained. In the case of the Gambier equation we give the contiguity relations for both the continuous and the discrete system.
We derive the Lagrangians of the higher-order Painlevé equations using Jacobi's last multiplier technique. Some of these higher-order differential equations display certain remarkable properties like passing the Painlevé test and satisfy the conditions stated by Jurá$\check{s}$, (Acta Appl. Math. 66 (2001) 25--39), thus allowing for a Lagrangian description.
In this paper, we show how to relate $n$-dimensional cubes on which ABS equations hold to the symmetry groups of discrete Painlevé equations. We here focus on the reduction from the 4-dimensional cube to the $q$-discrete third Painlevé equation, which is a dynamical system on a rational surface of type $A_5^{(1)}$ with the extended affine Weyl group $\widetilde{\mathcal W}\bigl((A_2+A_1)^{(1)}\bigr)$. We provide general theorems to show that this reduction also extends to other discrete Painlevé equations at least of type A.
We give an extension of the two-component KP hierarchy by considering additional time variables. We obtain the linear $2\times 2$ system by taking into consideration the hierarchy through a reduction procedure. The Lax pair of the Schlesinger system and the sixth Painlevé equation is given from this linear system. A unified approach to treat the other Painlevé equations from the usual two-component KP hierarchy is also considered.
We prove the meromorphy of solutions for a wide class of ordinary differential equations. These equations are given by invariant manifolds of non-linear partial differential equations integrable by the inverse scattering method. Some higher analogues of the Painlev\' e equations are considered as examples.
Recently we studied Padé interpolation problems of $q$-grid, related to $q$-Painlevé equations of type $E_7^{(1)}$, $E_6^{(1)}$, $D_5^{(1)}$, $A_4^{(1)}$ and $(A_2+A_1)^{(1)}$. By solving those problems, we could derive evolution equations, scalar Lax pairs and determinant formulae of special solutions for the corresponding $q$-Painlevé equations. It is natural that the $q$-Painlevé equations were derived by the interpolation method of $q$-grid, but it may be interesting in terms of differential grid that the Padé interpolation method of differential grid (i.e. Padé approximation method) has b…
A q-difference analogue of the Painlevé III equation is considered. Its derivations, affine Weyl group symmetry, and two kinds of special function type solutions are discussed.
One of the fourth-order analog to the first Painlevé equation is studied. All power expansions for solutions of this equation near points $z=0$ and $z=\infty$ are found by means of the power geometry method. The exponential additions to the expansion of solution near $z=\infty$ are computed. The obtained results confirm the hypothesis that the fourth-order analog of the first Painlevé equation determines new transcendental functions.
We relate two parameter solutions of the sixth Painlevé equation and finite-gap solutions of the Heun equation by considering monodromy on a certain class of Fuchsian differential equations. In the appendix, we present formulae on differentials of elliptic modular functions, and obtain the ellitic form of the sixth Painlevé equation directly.
Several results on Heun's equation are generalized to a certain class of Fuchsian differential equations. Namely, we obtain integral representations of solutions and develop Hermite-Krichever Ansatz on them. In particular, we investigate linear differential equations that produce Painlevé equation by monodromy preserving deformation and obtain solutions of the sixth Painlevé equation which include Hitchin's solution. The relationship with finite-gap potential is also discussed.
Rational solutions for a $q$-difference analogue of the Painlevé III equation are considered. A Determinant formula of Jacobi-Trudi type for the solutions is constructed.
We identify the self-similarity limit of the second flow of $sl(N)$ mKdV hierarchy with the periodic dressing chain thus establishing % a connection to $A^{(1)}_{N-1}$ invariant Painlevé equations. The $A^{(1)}_{N-1}$ Bäcklund symmetries of dressing equations and Painlevé equations are obtained in the self-similarity limit of gauge transformations of the mKdV hierarchy realized as zero-curvature equations on the loop algebra $\widehat{sl}(N)$ endowed with a principal gradation.
The fourth-order analog to the first Painlevé equation is studied. All power expansions for solutions of this equation near points $z=0$ and $z=\infty$ are found. The exponential additions to the expansion of solution near $z=\infty$ are computed. The obtained results confirm the hypothesis that the fourth-order analog of the first Painlevé equation determines new transcendental functions. By means of the methods of power geometry the basis of the plane lattice is also calculated.
We consider a modified Boussinesq type equation. The Painlevé test of the WTC method is performed for this equation and it shows that the equation has weak Painlevé property. Some exact solutions are constructed.
Problem of asymptotic description for global solutions to the six Painleve equations was investigated. Elliptic anzatzes and appropriate modulation equations were written out.
We argue the integrability of the generalized KdV(GKdV) equation using the Painlevé test. For $d( \le 2)$ dimensional space, GKdV equation passes the Painlevé test but does not for $d \geq 3$ dimensional space. We also apply the Ablowitz-Ramani-Segur's conjecture to the GKdV equation in order to complement the Painlevé test.
