Although the path-integral formalism is known to be equivalent to conventional quantum mechanics, it is not generally obvious how to implement path-based calculations for multi-qubit entangled states. Whether one takes the formal view of entangled states as entities in a high-dimensional Hilbert space, or the intuitive view of these states as a connection between distant spatial configurations, it may not even be obvious that a path-based calculation can be achieved using only paths in ordinary space and time. Previous work has shown how to do this for certain special states; this paper extends those results to all pure two-qubit states, where each qubit can be measured in an arbitrary basis. Certain three-qubit states are also developed, and path integrals again reproduce the usual correlations. These results should allow for a substantial amount of conventional quantum analysis to be translated over into a path-integral perspective, simplifying certain calculations, and more generally informing research in quantum foundations.
Spacetime emergence from entanglement proposes an alternative to quantizing gravity and typically derives a notion of distance based on the amount of mutual information shared across sub-systems. Albeit promising, this program still faces challenges to describe simple physical systems, such as a maximally entangled Bell pair that is taken apart while preserving its entanglement. We propose a solution to this problem: a reminder that quantum systems can have multiple sectors of independent degrees of freedom, and that each sector can be entangled. Thus, while one sector can decohere, and decrea…
Casimir-Polder interaction arises from the vacuum fluctuations of quantum field that depend on spacetime curvature and thus is spacetime-dependent. Here we show how to use the resonance Casimir-Polder interaction (RCPI) between two entangled atoms to detect spacetime curvature. We find that the RCPI of two static entangled atoms in the de Sitter-invariant vacuum depends on the de Sitter spacetime curvature relevant to the temperature felt by the static observer. It is characterized by a $1/L^2$ power law decay when beyond a characteristic length scale associated to the breakdown of a local ine…
The saddle points of a conventional Feynman path integral are not entangled, since they comprise a sequence of classical field configurations. We combine insights from field theory and tensor networks by constructing a Feynman path integral over a sequence of matrix product states. The paths that dominate this path integral include some degree of entanglement. This new feature allows several insights and applications: i. A Ginzburg-Landau description of deconfined phase transitions. ii. The emergence of new classical collective variables in states that are not adiabatically continuous with pro…
A possible causal solution to the problem of providing a spacetime description of the transmission of signals in quantum entangled states is described using a `bimetric' spacetime structure, in which the quantum entanglement measurements alter the structure of spacetime. Possible experimental tests to verify the suggested spacetime interpretation of quantum entangled states are proposed.
Presented is a topological representation of quantum logic that views entangled qubit spacetime histories (or qubit world lines) as a generalized braid, referred to as a superbraid. The crossing of world lines is purely quantum in nature, most conveniently expressed analytically with ladder-operator-based quantum gates. At a crossing, independent world lines can become entangled. Complicated superbraids are systematically reduced by recursively applying novel quantum skein relations. If the superbraid is closed (e.g. representing quantum circuits with closed-loop feedback, quantum lattice gas …
A digital signature is a mathematical scheme for demonstrating the authenticity of a digital message or document. For signing quantum messages, some arbitrated quantum signature schemes have being proposed. However, in the existing literature, arbitrated quantum signature schemes depend on entanglement. In this paper, we present two arbitrated quantum signature schemes without utilizing entangled states in the signing phase and the verifying phase. The first proposed scheme can preserve the merits in the existing schemes. Then, we point out, in this scheme and the prior schemes, there exists a…
The extension of many-body quantum dynamics to the non-unitary domain has led to a series of exciting developments, including new out-of-equilibrium entanglement phases and phase transitions. We show how a duality transformation between space and time on one hand, and unitarity and non-unitarity on the other, can be used to realize steady state phases of non-unitary dynamics that exhibit a rich variety of behavior in their entanglement scaling with subsystem size -- from logarithmic to extensive to \emph{fractal}. We show how these outcomes in non-unitary circuits (that are "spacetime-dual" to…
We argue that under very general conditions, there is a significant complication in amplitudes for spacetimes regions constructed from path integrals. This is the fact that the concrete implementation of the restrictions on paths over an interval of time corresponds, in an operator language, to sharp monitoring at every moment of time in the given time interval. Such processes suffer from the quantum Zeno effect -- the continual monitoring of a quantum system in a Hilbert subspace prevents its state from leaving that subspace. As a consequence, path integral amplitudes defined in this seemingl…
Even though ideas of extracting future-related, or Faster-Than-Light (FTL) information from hyperspace using quantum entanglement have generally been refuted in the last ten years, in this paper we show that the original 'Delayed Choice Quantum Eraser Experiment', 1st performed by Yoon-Ho Kim, R. Yu, S.P. Kulik, Y.H. Shih, designed by Marlan O. Scully & Druhl in 1982-1999, still features hidden topological properties that may have been overlooked by previous analysis, and which prohibit, by principle, the extraction of future-related or real-time information from the detection of the signal pa…
A quantum mechanical path integral derivation is given of a thermal propagator in non-static Gui spacetime. The thermal nature of the propagator is understood in terms of homotopically non-trivial paths in the configuration space appropriate to tortoise coordinates. The connection to thermal emission from collapsing black holes is discussed.
A possible solution to the problem of providing a spacetime description of the transmission of signals for quantum entangled states is obtained by using a bimetric spacetime structure, in which quantum entanglement measurements alter the structure of the classical relativity spacetime. A bimetric gravity theory locally has two lightcones, one which describes classical special relativity and a larger lightcone which allows light signals to communicate quantum information between entangled states, after a measurement device detects one of the entangled states. The theory would remove the tension…
Quantum illumination can utilize entangled light to detect the low-reflectivity target that is hidden in a bright thermal background. This technique is applied to the detection of an object in the curved spacetime of the Earth, in order to explore how the curvature of spacetime affects quantum illumination. It is found that the spatial quantum illumination with entangled state transmitter outperforms that with coherent-state transmitter in the near-Earth curved spacetime. Moreover, either the quantum illumination system or the coherent-state system is employed, and gravity can enhance the spac…
In modern quantum information theory one deals with an idealized situation when the spacetime dependence of quantum phenomena is neglected. However the transmission and processing of (quantum) information is a physical process in spacetime. Therefore such basic notions in quantum information theory as qubit, channel, composite systems and entangled states should be formulated in space and time. In this paper some basic notions of quantum information theory are considered from the point of view of quantum field theory and general relativity. It is pointed out an important fact that in quantum f…
The propagator of a spinless particle is calculated from the quantum mechanical path integral formalism in static curved spacetimes endowed with event-horizons. A toy model, the Gui spacetime, and the 2D and 4D Schwarzschild black holes are considered. The role of the topology of the coordinates configuration space is emphasised in this framework. To cover entirely the above spacetimes with a single set of coordinates, tortoise coordinates are extended to complex values. It is shown that the homotopic properties of the complex tortoise configuration space imply the thermal behaviour of the pro…
A Lagrangian formulation is constructed for particle interpretations of quantum mechanics, a well-known example of such an interpretation being the Bohm model. The advantages of such a description are that the equations for particle motion, field evolution and conservation laws can all be deduced from a single Lagrangian density expression. The formalism presented is Lorentz invariant. This paper follows on from a previous one which was limited to the single-particle case. The present paper treats the more general case of many particles in an entangled state. It is found that describing more t…
We study the properties of quantum entanglement and teleportation in the background of stationary and rotating curved space-times with extra dimensions. We show that a maximally entangled Bell state in an inertial frame becomes less entangled in curved space due to the well-known Hawking-Unruh effect. The degree of entanglement is found to be degraded with increasing the extra dimensions. For a finite black hole surface gravity, the observer may choose higher frequency mode to keep high level entanglement. The fidelity of quantum teleporation is also reduced because of the Hawking-Unruh effect…
We investigate the radiative processes of a quantum system composed by two identical two-level atoms in the de Sitter spacetime, interacting with a conformally coupled massless scalar field prepared in the de Sitter-invariant vacuum. We discuss the structure of the rate of variations of the atomic energy for two static atoms. Following a procedure developed by Dalibard, Dupont-Roc and Cohen-Tannoudji, our intention is to identify in a quantitative way the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and the radiation reaction to the generation of quantum entanglement and to the degradation of entangle…
Bell's theorem is supposed to exclude all local hidden-variable models of quantum correlations. However, an explicit counterexample shows that a new class of local realistic models, based on generalized arithmetic and calculus, can exactly reconstruct rotationally symmetric quantum probabilities typical of two-electron singlet states. Observable probabilities are consistent with the usual arithmetic employed by macroscopic observers, but counterfactual aspects of Bell's theorem are sensitive to the choice of hidden-variable arithmetic and calculus. The model is classical in the sense of Einste…

We propose a new thought experiment, based on present-day Quantum Information Technologies, to measure quantum gravitational effects through the Bose-Marletto-Vedral (BMV) effect by revealing the gravitational $t^3$ phase term, its expected relationships with low-energy quantum gravity phenomena and test the equivalence principle of general relativity. The technique here proposed promise to reveal gravitational field fluctuations from the analysis of the stochastic noise associated to an ideal output of a measurement process of a quantum system. To improve the sensitivity we propose to cumulat…
There should be quantum vacuum fluctuations of spacetime itself, if we accept that the basic quantum principles we are already familiar with apply as well to a quantum theory of gravity. In this paper, we study, in linearized quantum gravity, the quantum entanglement generation at the neighborhood of the initial time between two independent gravitationally polarizable two-level subsystems caused by fluctuating quantum vacuum gravitational fields in the framework of open quantum systems. A bath of fluctuating quantum vacuum gravitational fields serves as an environment that provides indirect in…
We assume that space-time at the Planck scale is discrete, quantised in Planck units and "qubitsed" (each pixel of Planck area encodes one qubit), that is, quantum space-time can be viewed as a quantum computer. Within this model, one finds that quantum space-time itself is entangled, and can quantum-evaluate Boolean functions which are the laws of Physics in their discrete and fundamental form.
Path integrals appear to offer natural and intuitively appealing methods for defining quantum-mechanical amplitudes for questions involving spacetime regions. For example, the amplitude for entering a spatial region during a given time interval is typically defined by summing over all paths between given initial and final points but restricting them to pass through the region at any time. We argue that there is, however, under very general conditions, a significant complication in such constructions. This is the fact that the concrete implementation of the restrictions on paths over an interva…
A causal set C can describe a discrete spacetime, but this discrete spacetime is not quantum, because C is endowed with Boolean logic, as it does not allow cycles. In a quasi-ordered set Q, cycles are allowed. In this paper, we consider a subset QC of a quasi-ordered set Q, whose elements are all the cycles. In QC, which is endowed with quantum logic, each cycle of maximal outdegree N in a node, is associated with N entangled qubits. Then QC describes a quantum computing spacetime. This structure, which is non-local and non-casual, can be understood as a proto-spacetime. Micro-causality and lo…
Networking plays a ubiquitous role in quantum technology. It is an integral part of quantum communication and has significant potential for upscaling quantum computer technologies that are otherwise not scalable. Recently, it was realized that sensing of multiple spatially distributed parameters may also benefit from an entangled quantum network. Here we experimentally demonstrate how sensing of an averaged phase shift among four distributed nodes benefits from an entangled quantum network. Using a four-mode entangled continuous variable (CV) state, we demonstrate deterministic quantum phase s…
Semidefinite programs (SDPs) are a framework for exact or approximate optimization that have widespread application in quantum information theory. We introduce a new method for using reductions to construct integrality gaps for SDPs. These are based on new limitations on the sum-of-squares (SoS) hierarchy in approximating two particularly important sets in quantum information theory, where previously no $ω(1)$-round integrality gaps were known: the set of separable (i.e. unentangled) states, or equivalently, the $2 \rightarrow 4$ norm of a matrix, and the set of quantum correlations; i.e. cond…
Although the standard viewpoint in theoretical physics is that the unification of quantum theory and general relativity requires the quantization of gravity and spacetime, there is not consensus about whether spacetime must fundamentally have any quantum features. Here we show a theorem stating that spacetime degrees of freedom and a quantum system violate a Bell inequality in a background Minkowski spacetime if a few properties of general relativity and quantum theory have a broad range of validity, and if the quantum state reduction upon measurement is a real physical process that is complet…

Modern quantum information theory deals with an idealized situation when the spacetime dependence of quantum phenomena is neglected. However the transmission and processing of (quantum) information is a physical process in spacetime. Therefore such basic notions in quantum information theory as qubit, channel, composite systems and entangled states should be formulated in space and time. In particlular we suggest that instead of a two level system (qubit) the basic notion in a relativistic quantum information theory should be a notion of an elementary quantum system, i.e. an infinite dimension…
We give for the first time a diagrammatic calculational tool of quantum entanglement. We present a pedagogical and simple mechanical implementation of quantum entanglement or "spooky action at a distance" to give a tangible realization of this weird quantum mechanical concept alien to classical physics. When two or more particles are correlated in a certain way, no matter how far apart they are in space, their states remain correlated. Their correlation, which is instantaneous, does not seem to involve any communication which is limited by the speed of light. The same mechanical implementation…
The conserved probability densities (attributed to the conserved currents derived from relativistic wave equations) should be non-negative and the integral of them over an entire hypersurface should be equal to one. To satisfy these requirements in a covariant manner, the foliation of spacetime must be such that each integral curve of the current crosses each hypersurface of the foliation once and only once. In some cases, it is necessary to use hypersurfaces that are not spacelike everywhere. The generalization to the many-particle case is also possible.
We here put forward a new path-integral over Hilbert space and show that it reproduces quantum mechanics exactly. This approach works by optimizing the generating functional under a variation of the final state; it is hence an example of a future-input dependent theory. The benefit of this method is that entangled states appear in the paths directly, and the generating functional can be modified to also include wave-function collapse.
We present a simple and practical quantum protocol involving two mistrustful agencies in Minkowski space, which allows Alice to transfer data to Bob at a spacetime location that neither can predict in advance. The location depends on both Alice's and Bob's actions. The protocol guarantees unconditionally to Alice that Bob learns the data at a randomly determined location; it guarantees to Bob that Alice will not learn the transfer location even after the protocol is complete. The task implemented, transferring data at a space-time location that remains hidden from the transferrer, has no preci…
In this note, we describe how collections of arbitrary numbers of "BC-bits," distinct non-interacting quantum systems each consisting of a holographic boundary conformal field theory (BCFT), can be placed in multipartite entangled states in order to encode single connected bulk spacetimes that approximate geometries dual to holographic CFT states. The BC-bit version of a holographic CFT state corresponds to a geometry that can be made arbitrarily similar to the associated CFT-state geometry within a "causal diamond" region defined by points that are spacelike separated from the boundary time s…
In this manuscript, we consider a scenario in which a spin-1/2 quanton goes through a superposition of co-rotating and counter-rotating geodetic circular paths, which play the role of the paths of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer in a stationary and axisymmetric spacetime. Since the spin of the particle plays the role of a quantum clock, as the quanton moves in a superposed path it gets entangled with the momentum (or the path), and this will cause the interferometric visibility (or the internal quantum coherence) to drop, since, in stationary axisymmetric spacetimes there is a difference in prop…
We investigate two measures of quantum correlations and entanglement, namely the violation of the Bell-Mermin-Klyshko inequalities and the quantum discord, for Dirac fermions in the cosmological de Sitter background of dimension four. The BMK violation is focussed on the vacuum for two and four mode squeezed states and it is shown to increase with the number of modes. For the quantum discord, we investigate a maximally entangled in-vacuum state. Qualitative similarities as well as differences of our results with that of different coordinatisations of de Sitter in the context of scalar and ferm…
Gravitational waves, as predicted by Einstein's general relativity theory, appear as ripples in the fabric of spacetime traveling at the speed of light. We prove that the propagation of small amplitude gravitational waves in a curved spacetime is equivalent to the propagation of a subspace of electromagnetic states. We use this result to propose the use of entangled photons to emulate the evolution of gravitational waves in curved spacetimes by means of experimental electromagnetic setups featuring metamaterials.
We derive a discrete path integral for massless fermions on a hypercubic spacetime lattice with null faces. The amplitude for a path with N steps and B bends is +/- (1/2)^N (i/sqrt{3})^B.
