A possible causal solution to the problem of providing a spacetime description of the transmission of signals in quantum entangled states is described using a `bimetric' spacetime structure, in which the quantum entanglement measurements alter the structure of spacetime. Possible experimental tests to verify the suggested spacetime interpretation of quantum entangled states are proposed.
In order to understand the detailed mechanism by which a fundamental discreteness can provide a finite entanglement entropy, we consider the entanglement entropy of two classes of free massless scalar fields on causal sets that are well approximated by causal diamonds in Minkowski spacetime of dimensions 2,3 and 4. The first class is defined from discretised versions of the continuum retarded Green functions, while the second uses the causal set's retarded nonlocal d'Alembertians parametrised by a length scale $l_k$. In both cases we provide numerical evidence that the area law is recovered wh…
A possible solution to the problem of providing a spacetime description of the transmission of signals for quantum entangled states is obtained by using a bimetric spacetime structure, in which quantum entanglement measurements alter the structure of the classical relativity spacetime. A bimetric gravity theory locally has two lightcones, one which describes classical special relativity and a larger lightcone which allows light signals to communicate quantum information between entangled states, after a measurement device detects one of the entangled states. The theory would remove the tension…
We analyze potential violations of causality in Unruh DeWitt-type detector models in relativistic quantum information. We proceed by first studying the relation between faster-than-light signaling and the causal factorization of the dynamics for multiple detector-field interactions. We show in what way spatially extended non-relativistic detector models predict superluminal propagation of the field's initial conditions. We draw parallels between this characteristic of detector models, stemming from their non-relativistic dynamics, and Sorkin's "impossible measurements on quantum fields" arXiv:…
Quantum mechanics, in principle, allows for processes with indefinite causal order. However, most of these causal anomalies have not yet been detected experimentally. We show that every such process can be simulated experimentally by means of non-Markovian dynamics with a measurement on additional degrees of freedom. Explicitly, we provide a constructive scheme to implement arbitrary acausal processes. Furthermore, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for open system dynamics with measurement to yield processes that respect causality locally, and find that tripartite entanglement and no…
Entanglement renormalization can be viewed as an encoding circuit for a family of approximate quantum error correcting codes. The logical information becomes progressively more well-protected against erasure errors at larger length scales. In particular, an approximate variant of holographic quantum error correcting code emerges at low energy for critical systems. This implies that two operators that are largely separated in scales behave as if they are spatially separated operators, in the sense that they obey a Lieb-Robinson type locality bound under a time evolution generated bya local Hami…
We calculate entanglement entropy in a non-relativistic field theory described by the Schrödinger operator. We demonstrate that the entropy is characterized by i) the area law and ii) UV divergences that are identical to those in the relativistic field theory. These observations are further supported by a holographic consideration. We use the non-relativistic symmetry and completely specify entanglement entropy in large class of non-relativistic theories described by the field operators polynomial in derivatives. We suggest that the area law of the entropy can be tested in experiments with con…
We show that the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) can be reformulated in terms of a causality constraint on discrete quantum dynamics. This causal structure is that of de Sitter space with a flat spacelike boundary, where the volume of a spacetime region corresponds to the number of variational parameters it contains. This result clarifies the nature of the ansatz, and suggests a generalization to quantum field theory. It also constitutes an independent justification of the connection between MERA and hyperbolic geometry which was proposed as a concrete implementation of t…
Phenomena induced by the existence of entanglement, such as nonlocal correlations, exhibit characteristic properties of quantum mechanics distinguishing from classical theories. When entanglement is accompanied by classical communication, it enhances the power of quantum operations jointly performed by two spatially separated parties. Such a power has been analyzed by the gap between the performances of joint quantum operations implementable by local operations at each party connected by classical communication with and without the assistance of entanglement. In this work, we present a new for…
We analyse a communication scenario over a particular causal broadcast channel whose state depends on a modulo sum. The receivers of the broadcast receive channel state information and collaborate to determine the channel state as to decode their private messages. Further, the receivers of the broadcast can collude up to the minimum non-collusion condition to determine state information of the other non-colluding receivers. We analyse three resource scenarios for the receivers: receivers can share entanglement without classically communicating, can just use classical communication, or have bot…
Quantum teleportation is possible because entanglement allows a definition of precise correlations between the non-commuting properties of a local system and corresponding non-commuting properties of a remote system. In this paper, the exact causality achieved by maximal entanglement is analyzed and the results are applied to the transfer of effects acting on the entanglement distribution channels to the teleported output state. In particular, it is shown how measurements performed on the entangled system distributed to the sender provide information on the teleported state while transferring …
We consider a bipartite entangled system half of which falls through the event horizon of an evaporating black hole, while the other half remains coherently accessible to experiments in the exterior region. Beyond complete evaporation, the evolution of the quantum state past the Cauchy horizon cannot remain unitary, raising the questions: How can this evolution be described as a quantum map, and how is causality preserved? The answers are subtle, and are linked in unexpected ways to the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics. We show that terrestrial experiments can be designed to constrain exa…
Superquantum ("PR-box") correlations, though designed to respect relativistic causality, violate relativistic causality in the classical limit. Generalizing to all stronger-than-quantum bipartite correlations, I derive Tsirelson's bound from the axioms of nonlocality, relativistic causality and the existence of a classical limit. This derivation of Tsirelson's bound does not assume quantum mechanics yet suggests how Hilbert space is implicit in quantum correlations.
I present a schema for a superluminal telecommunication system based on polarization entangled photon pairs. Binary signals can be transmitted at superluminal speed in this system, if entangled photon pairs can really be produced. The existence of the polarization entangled photon pairs is in direct contradiction to the relativistic causality in this telecommunication system. This contradiction implies the impossibility of generating entangled photon pairs.
After a review of the problems induced by the Lorentz signature of Minkowski space-time, like the need of a clock synchronization convention for the definition of 3-space and the complexity of the notion of relativistic center of mass, there is the introduction of a new formulation of relativistic quantum mechanics compatible with the theory of relativistic bound states. In it the zeroth postulate of non-relativistic quantum mechanics is not valid and the physics is described in the rest frame by a Hilbert space containing only relative variables. The non-locality of the Poincare' generators i…
We provide a simple argument showing that, in the limit of infinite acceleration, the entanglement in a fermionic field bipartite system must be independent of the choice of Unruh modes. This implies that most tensor product structures used previously to compute field entanglement in relativistic quantum information cannot give rise to physical results.
Entanglement-assisted communication over a random-parameter quantum channel with either causal or non-causal channel side information (CSI) at the encoder is considered. This describes a scenario where the quantum channel depends on the quantum state of the input environment. While Bob, the decoder, has no access to this state, Alice, the transmitter, performs a sequence of projective measurements on her environment and encodes her message accordingly. Dupuis established the entanglement-assisted capacity with non-causal CSI. Here, we establish characterization in the causal setting, and also …
It is often claimed that one cannot locate a notion of causation in fundamental physical theories. The reason most commonly given is that the dynamics of those theories do not support any distinction between the past and the future, and this vitiates any attempt to locate a notion of causal asymmetry -- and thus of causation -- in fundamental physical theories. I argue that this is incorrect: the ubiquitous generation of entanglement between quantum systems grounds a relevant asymmetry in the dynamical evolution of quantum systems. I show that by exploiting a connection between the amount of e…
We make a critical comparison of relativistic and non-relativistic classical and quantum mechanics of particles in inertial frames and of the open problems in particle localization at the two levels. The solution of the problems of the relativistic center of mass, of the clock synchronization convention needed to define relativistic 3-spaces and of the elimination of the relative times in the relativistic bound states leads to a description with a decoupled non-local (non-measurable) relativistic center of mass and with only relative variables for the particles (single particle subsystems do n…
Entanglement generation by Newtonian gravitational potential between objects has been widely discussed to reveal the quantum nature of gravity. In this paper, we perform a quantum field theoretical analysis of a slightly modified version of the gedanken experiment by Mari and co-workers. We show that decoherence due to the presence of a detector propagates with the speed of light in terms of a retarded Green's function, as it should be consistent with causality of relativistic field theories. The quantum nature of fields, such as quantum fluctuations or emission of gravitons expressed in terms…
The quantum nonlocality is limited by relativistic causality, however, the reason is not fully understood yet. The relativistic causality condition on nonlocal correlations has been usually accepted as a prohibition of faster-than-light signaling, called no-signaling condition. We propose another causality condition from the observation that space-like separate events should have no causal relationship. It is proved that the new condition is stronger than no-signaling condition for a pair of binary devices. We derive the standard probability assignment rule, so-called Born rule, on quantum mea…
I present some general ideas about quantum entanglement in relativistic quantum field theory, especially entanglement in the physical vacuum. Here, entanglement is defined between different single particle states (or modes), parameterized either by energy-momentum together with internal degrees of freedom, or by spacetime coordinate together with the component index in the case of a vector or spinor field. In this approach, the notion of entanglement between different spacetime points can be established. Some entanglement properties are obtained as constraints from symmetries, e.g., under Lore…
We show that the relativistic motion of a quantum system can be used to generate quantum gates. The nonuniform acceleration of a cavity is used to generate well-known two-mode quantum gates in continuous variables. Observable amounts of entanglement between the cavity modes are produced through resonances which appear by repeating periodically any trajectory.
We study the properties of entanglement entropy among scattering particles as observed from different inertial moving frames, based on an exemplary QED process $e^+e^-\rightarrowμ^+μ^-$. By the explicit calculation of the Wigner rotation, the entanglement entropy of scattering particles is found to be Lorentz invariant. We also study the behavior of the entanglement between spin degrees of freedom for scattering particles in moving frames. This quantity, being found to change with different inertial reference frames, does not exhibit as a Lorentz invariant.
In this study, the spin-momentum correlation of one massive spin-1/2 and spin-1 particle states, which are made based on projection of a relativistic spin operator into timelike direction is investigated. It is shown that by using Non-Linear entanglement witnesses (NLEWs), the effect of Lorentz transformation would decrease both the amount and the region of entanglement.
Bell appealed to the theory of relativity in formulating his principle of local causality. But he maintained that quantum field theories do not conform to that principle, even when their field equations are relativistically covariant and their observable algebras satisfy a relativistically motivated microcausality condition. A pragmatist view of quantum theory and an interventionist approach to causation prompt the reevaluation of local causality and microcausality. Local causality cannot be understood as a reasonable requirement on relativistic quantum field theories: it is unmotivated even i…
We study the full entanglement dynamics of two uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detectors with no direct interaction in between but each coupled to a common quantum field and moving back-to-back in the field vacuum. For two detectors initially prepared in a separable state our exact results show that quantum entanglement between the detectors can be created by the quantum field under some specific circumstances, though each detector never enters the other's light cone in this setup. In the weak coupling limit, this entanglement creation can occur only if the initial moment is placed early en…
The expected indefinite causal structure in quantum gravity poses a challenge to the notion of entanglement: If two parties are in an indefinite causal relation of being spacelike and timelike, can they still be entangled? If so, how does one measure the amount of entanglement? We propose to generalize the notions of entanglement and entanglement measure to address these questions. Incidentally but importantly, the generalization opens the path to study quantum entanglement of states, channels, networks and processes with definite or indefinite causal structure in a unified fashion, e.g., we s…
This article considers dynamical entanglement in non-relativistic particle scattering. Three questions are explored: what kinds of entanglement occur in this system, how do global symmetries constrain entanglement, and how do the boundary conditions of scattering affect dynamical entanglement? First, a simple model of scattering spin systems is considered, then the full system is discussed.
This paper considers the use an entanglement breaking channel in the construction of a secure bit-commitment protocol. It is shown that this can be done via a depolarizing quantum channel.
In this thesis, we investigate two different aspects of entanglement and classical communication in distributed quantum computation (DQC). In the first part, we analyze implementable computation over a given quantum network resource by introducing a new concept, quantum network coding for quantum computation. We consider a setting of networks where quantum communication for each edge of a network is restricted to sending one-qubit, but classical communication is unrestricted. Specifically, we analyze implementable $k$-qubit unitary operations over a certain class of networks, called cluster ne…
We prove a trade-off relation between the entanglement cost and classical communication complexity of causal order structure of a protocol in distributed quantum information processing. We consider an implementation of a class of two-qubit unitary gates by local operations and classical communication (LOCC) assisted with shared entanglement, in an information theoretical scenario of asymptotically many input pairs and vanishingly small error. We prove the trade-off relation by showing that (i) one ebit of entanglement per pair is necessary for implementing the unitary by any two-round protocol…
The generation of entangled states and their degree of entanglement is studied ab initio in a relativistic formulation for the case of two interacting spin-1/2 charged particles. In the realm of quantum electrodynamics we derive the interaction that produces entanglement between the spin components of covariant Dirac spinors describing the two particles. Following this consistent approach the relativistic invariance of the generated entanglement is discussed.
Entanglement is defined between subsystems of a quantum system, and at fixed time two regions of space can be viewed as two subsystems of a relativistic quantum field. The entropy of entanglement between such subsystems is ill-defined unless an ultraviolet cutoff is introduced, but it still diverges in the continuum limit. This behaviour is generic for arbitrary finite-energy states, hence a conceptual tension with the finite entanglement entropy typical of nonrelativistic quantum systems. We introduce a novel approach to explain the transition from infinite to finite entanglement, based on co…
Multiple photonic degrees of freedom can be explored to generate high-dimensional quantum states; commonly referred to as `qudits'. Qudits offer several advantages for quantum communications, including higher information capacity, noise resilience and data throughput, and lower information loss over different propagation mediums (free space, optical fibre, underwater) as compared to conventional qubits based communication system. However, qudits have been little exploited in literature, owing to their difficulty in transmission and detection. In this paper, for the first time, we develop and f…
The study of Entanglement of Formation of a mixed state of a bipartite system in high-dimensional Hilbert space is not easy in general. So, we focus on determining the amount of entanglement for a bipartite mixed state based on the concept of decomposable optimal entanglement witness (DOEW), that can be calculated as a minimum distance of an entangled state from the edge of positive partial transpose (PPT) states which has the most negative (positive) expectation value for non-PPT (bound) entangled states. We have constructed DOEWs based on the convex optimization method, then by using of it w…
This article discusses entanglement between two subsystems, one with discrete degrees of freedom and the other with continuous degrees of freedom. The overlap integral between continuous variable wave functions emerges as an important parameter to characterize this kind entanglement. ``Beam-like'' entanglement and ``shape-like'' entanglement are contrasted. One example of this kind of entanglement is between between the spin degrees of freedom and the momentum degrees of freedom for a non-relativistic particle. This intraparticle entanglement is Galilean invariant.
A symmetric monoidal category naturally arises as the mathematical structure that organizes physical systems, processes, and composition thereof, both sequentially and in parallel. This structure admits a purely graphical calculus. This paper is concerned with the encoding of a fixed causal structure within a symmetric monoidal category: causal dependencies will correspond to topological connectedness in the graphical language. We show that correlations, either classical or quantum, force terminality of the tensor unit. We also show that well-definedness of the concept of a global state forces…
The de Broglie-Bohm interpretation of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory is generalized in such a way that it describes trajectories of relativistic fermionic particles and antiparticles and provides a causal description of the processes of their creation and destruction. A general method of causal interpretation of quantum systems is developed and applied to a causal interpretation of fermionic quantum field theory represented by c-number valued wave functionals.
We consider electromagnetism in a cylindrical manifold coupled to a nonrelativistic charged point-particle. Through the relation between this theory and the Landau model on a torus, we study the entanglement between the particle and the electromagnetic field. In particular, we compute the entanglement entropy in the ground state, which is degenerate, obtaining how it varies in the degeneracy subspace.
The entanglement between spins of a pair of particles may change because the spin and momentum become mixed when viewed by a moving observer [R.M. Gingrich and C. Adami, Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 270402 (2002)]. In this paper, it is shown that, if the momenta are appropriately entangled, the entanglement between the spins of the Bell states can remain maximal when viewed by any moving observer. Further, we suggest a relativistic-invariant protocol for quantum communication, with which the non-relativistic quantum information theory could be invariantly applied to relativistic situations.
In general relativity, `causal structure' refers to the partial order on space-time points (or regions) that encodes time-like relationships. Recently, quantum information and quantum foundations saw the emergence of a `causality principle'. In the form used in this paper, which we call `process terminality', it states that when the output of a process is discarded, then the process itself may as well be discarded. While causal structure and process terminality at first seem to be entirely different notions, they become equivalent when making explicit what the partial order actually encodes, t…
It is shown that the correlations predicted by relativistic quantum field theory in locally normal states between projections in local von Neumann algebras $\cA(V_1),\cA(V_2)$ associated with spacelike separated spacetime regions $V_1,V_2$ have a (Reichenbachian) common cause located in the union of the backward light cones of $V_1$ and $V_2$. Further comments on causality and independence in quantum field theory are made.
We analyse particle creation and mode mixing for a quantum field in an accelerated cavity, assuming small accelerations but allowing arbitrary velocities, travel times and travel distances, and in particular including the regime of relativistic velocities. As an application, we identify a desktop experimental scenario where the mode mixing resonance frequency in linear sinusoidal motion or in uniform circular motion is significantly below the particle creation resonance frequencies of the Dynamical Casimir Effect, and arguably at the threshold of current technology. The mode mixing acts as a b…
