The motion of a thin elastic plate interacting with a viscous fluid is investigated. A periodic force acting on the plate is considered, which in a setting without damping could lead to a resonant response. The interaction with the viscous fluid provides a damping mechanism due to the energy dissipation in the fluid. Moreover, an internal damping mechanism in the plate is introduced. In this setting, we show that the periodic forcing leads to a time-periodic (non-resonant) solution. We employ the Navier-Stokes and the Kirchhoff-Love plate equation in a periodic cell structure to model the motion of the viscous fluid and the elastic plate, respectively. Maximal Lp regularity for the linearized system is established in a framework of time-periodic function spaces. Existence of a solution to the fully nonlinear system is subsequently shown with a fixed-point argument.
Existence of non-resonant solutions of time-periodic type are established for the Kuznetsov equation with a periodic forcing term. The equation is considered in a three-dimensional whole-space, half-space and bounded domain, and with both non-homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann boundary values. A method based on Lp estimates of the corresponding linearization, namely the wave equation with Kelvin-Voigt damping, is employed.
We consider the long-time behavior of the mean curvature flow in heterogeneous media with periodic fibrations, modeled as an additive driving force. Under appropriate assumptions on the forcing term, we show existence of generalized traveling waves with maximal speed of propagation, and we prove the convergence of solutions to the forced mean curvature flow to these generalized waves.
For the 3D Navier-Stokes-Maxwell problem on the whole space and in the presence of external time-periodic forces, first we study the existence of time-periodic small solutions, and then we prove their asymptotic stability. We use new type of spaces to account for averaged decay in time.
The Blackstock-Crighton equations describe the motion of a viscous, heat-conducting, compressible fluid. They are used as models for acoustic wave propagation in a medium in which both nonlinear and dissipative effects are taken into account. In this article, a mathematical analysis of the Blackstock-Crighton equations with a time-periodic forcing term is carried out. For arbitrary time-periodic data (sufficiently restricted in size) it is shown that a time-periodic solution of the same period always exists. This implies that the dissipative effects are sufficient to avoid resonance within the…
An effective model is identified for thin perfectly plastic plates whose microstructure consists of the periodic assembling of two elastoplastic phases, as the periodicity parameter converges to zero. Assuming that the thickness of the plates and the periodicity of the microstructure are comparably small, a limiting description is obtained in the quasistatic regime via simultaneous homogenization and dimension reduction by means of evolutionary $Γ$-convergence, two-scale convergence, and periodic unfolding.
We show that nonlinearly elastic plates of thickness $h\to 0$ with an $\varepsilon$-periodic structure such that $\varepsilon^{-2}h\to 0$ exhibit non-standard behaviour in the asymptotic two-dimensional reduction from three-dimensional elasticity: in general, their effective stored-energy density is "discontinuously anisotropic" in all directions. The proof relies on a new result concerning an additional isometric constraint that deformation fields must satisfy on the microscale.
We identify effective models for thin, linearly elastic and perfectly plastic plates exhibiting a microstructure resulting from the periodic alternation of two elastoplastic phases. We study here both the case in which the thickness of the plate converges to zero on a much faster scale than the periodicity parameter and the opposite scenario in which homogenization occurs on a much finer scale than dimension reduction. After performing a static analysis of the problem, we show convergence of the corresponding quasistatic evolutions. The methodology relies on two-scale convergence and periodic …
We consider a conservative system consisting of an elastic plate interacting with a gas filling a semi-infinite tube. The plate is placed on the bottom of the tube. The dynamics of the gas velocity potential is governed by the linear wave equation. The plate displacement satisfies the linear Kirchhoff equation. We show that this system possesses an infinite number of periodic solutions with the frequencies tending to infinity. This means that the well-known property of decaying of local wave energy in tube domains does not hold for the system considered.
This paper is concerned with uniqueness for reconstructing a periodic inhomogeneous medium covered on a perfectly conducting plate. We deal with the problem in the frame of time-harmonic Maxwell systems without TE or TM polarization. An orthogonal relation for two refractive indices is obtained, and then inspired by Kirsch's idea, the refractive index can be identified by utilizing the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a quasi-periodic Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem.
We consider a PDE system with degenerate hysteresis describing unsaturated flow in 3D porous media. Assuming that a time periodic forcing is prescribed on the boundary, we prove that a time periodic response exists as long as the amplitude of the forcing terms is small enough to keep the solution within the convexity domain of the hysteresis operator.
We consider the Boussinesq PDE perturbed by a time-dependent forcing. Even though there is no smoothing effect for arbitrary smooth initial data, we are able to apply the method of self-consistent bounds to deduce the existence of smooth classical periodic solutions in the vicinity of 0. The proof is non-perturbative and relies on construction of periodic isolating segments in the Galerkin projections.
A thin and narrow rectangular plate having the two short edges hinged and the two long edges free is considered. A nonlinear nonlocal evolution equation describing the deformation of the plate is introduced: well-posedness and existence of periodic solutions are proved. The natural phase space is a particular second order Sobolev space that can be orthogonally split into two subspaces containing, respectively, the longitudinal and the torsional movements of the plate. Sufficient conditions for the stability of periodic solutions and of solutions having only a longitudinal component are given. …
We present here a version of the existence and uniqueness result of time periodic solutions to the viscous Burgers equation with irregular forcing terms (with Sobolev regularity -1 in space). The key result here is an a priori estimate which is simpler than the previously treated case of forcing terms with regularity -1/2 in time.
Under the action of a time-periodic external forces we prove the existence of at least one time-periodic weak solution for the interaction between a three-dimensional incompressible fluid, governed by the Navier- Stokes equation and a two dimensional elastic plate. The challenge is that the Eulerian domain for the fluid changes in time and is a part of the solution. We introduce a two fixed-point methodology: First we construct a time-periodic solutions for a given variable time-periodic geometry. Then in a second step a (set-valued) fixed point is performed w.r.t.\ the geometry of the domain.…
In this paper we study the homogenization effects on the model of elastic plate in the bending regime, under the assumption that the energy density (material) oscillates in the direction of thickness. We study two different cases. First, we show, starting from 3D elasticity, by means of $Γ$-convergence and under general (not necessarily periodic) assumption, that the effective behavior of the limit is not influenced by oscillations in the direction of thickness. In the second case, we study periodic in-plane oscillations of the energy density coupled with periodic oscillations in the direction…
By the Lyapunov-Perron method,we prove the existence of random inertial manifolds for a class of equations driven simultaneously by non-autonomous deterministic and stochastic forcing. These invariant manifolds contain tempered pullback random attractors if such attractors exist. We also prove pathwise periodicity and almost periodicity of inertial manifolds when non-autonomous deterministic forcing is periodic and almost periodic in time, respectively.
We analyse a system of partial differential equations describing the behaviour of an elastic plate with periodic moduli in the two planar directions, in the asymptotic regime when the period and the plate thickness are of the same order of smallness. Assuming that the displacement gradients of the points of the plate are small enough for the equations of linearised elasticity to be a suitable approximation of the material response, such as the case in e.g. acoustic wave propagation, we derive a class of "hybrid", homogenisation dimension-reduction, norm-resolvent estimates for the plate, under…
We analyze the long time behavior of solutions of the Schrödinger equation $iψ_t=(-Δ-b/r+V(t,x))ψ$, $x\in\RR^3$, $r=|x|$, describing a Coulomb system subjected to a spatially compactly supported time periodic potential $V(t,x)=V(t+2π/ω,x)$ with zero time average. We show that, for any $V(t,x)$ of the form $2Ω(r)\sin (ωt-θ)$, with $Ω(r)$ nonzero on its support, Floquet bound states do not exist. This implies that the system ionizes, {\em i.e.} $P(t,K)=\int_K|ψ(t,x)|^2dx\to 0$ as $t\to\infty$ for any compact set $K\subset\RR^3$. Furthermore, if the initial state is compactly supported and has on…
We show that the Cauchy Problem for a randomly forced, periodic multi-dimensional scalar first-order conservation law with additive or multiplicative noise is well-posed: it admits a unique solution, characterized by a kinetic formulation of the problem, which is the limit of the solution of the stochastic parabolic approximation.
We consider the effect of time-periodic forcing on a one-dimensional Schr{ö}dinger equation with a topologically protected defect (edge) mode. The unforced system models a domain-wall or dislocation defect in a periodic structure, and it supports a defect mode which bifurcates from the Dirac point (linear band crossing) of the underlying bulk medium. We study the robustness of this state against time-periodic forcing of the type that arises in the study of Floquet Topological Insulators in condensed matter, photonics, and cold-atoms systems. Our numerical simulations demonstrate that under tim…
We consider a class of linear second order differential equations with damping and external force. We investigate the link between a uniform bound on the forcing term and the corresponding ultimate bound on the velocity of solutions, and we study the dependence of that bound on the damping and on the "elastic force". We prove three results. First of all, in a rather general setting we show that different notions of bound are actually equivalent. Then we compute the optimal constants in the scalar case. Finally, we extend the results of the scalar case to abstract dissipative wave-type equation…
Based on our previous work, we propose a homogenized model of acoustic waves propagating through periodically perforated elastic plates with metamaterial properties due to embedded arrays of soft elastic inclusions serving for resonators. Such structures enable to suppress the acoustic transmission for selected frequency bands. Homogenization of the vibro-acoustic fluid-structure interaction problem in a 3D complex geometry of the transmission layer leads to effective transmission conditions prescribed on the acoustic meta-surface associated with the mid-plane of the Reissner-Mindlin plate. As…
