We show that nonlinearly elastic plates of thickness $h\to 0$ with an $\varepsilon$-periodic structure such that $\varepsilon^{-2}h\to 0$ exhibit non-standard behaviour in the asymptotic two-dimensional reduction from three-dimensional elasticity: in general, their effective stored-energy density is "discontinuously anisotropic" in all directions. The proof relies on a new result concerning an additional isometric constraint that deformation fields must satisfy on the microscale.
We derive, via simultaneous homogenization and dimension reduction, the $Γ$-limit for thin elastic plates of thickness $h$ whose energy density oscillates on a scale $\eh$ such that $ \eh^2 \ll h\ll \eh$. We consider the energy scaling that corresponds to Kirchhoff's nonlinear bending theory of plates.
The presence of prestrain can have a tremendous effect on the mechanical behavior of slender structures. Prestrained elastic plates show spontaneous bending in equilibrium -- a property that makes such objects relevant for the fabrication of active and functional materials. In this paper we study microheterogeneous, prestrained plates that feature nonflat equilibrium shapes. Our goal is to understand the relation between the properties of the prestrained microstructure and the global shape of the plate in mechanical equilibrium. To this end, we consider a three-dimensional, nonlinear elasticit…
In this paper we study the homogenization effects on the model of elastic plate in the bending regime, under the assumption that the energy density (material) oscillates in the direction of thickness. We study two different cases. First, we show, starting from 3D elasticity, by means of $Γ$-convergence and under general (not necessarily periodic) assumption, that the effective behavior of the limit is not influenced by oscillations in the direction of thickness. In the second case, we study periodic in-plane oscillations of the energy density coupled with periodic oscillations in the direction…
We carry out the spatially periodic homogenization of nonlinear bending theory for plates. The derivation is rigorous in the sense of Gamma-convergence. In contrast to what one naturally would expect, our result shows that the limiting functional is not simply a quadratic functional of the second fundamental form of the deformed plate as it is the case in nonlinear plate theory. It turns out that the limiting functional discriminates between whether the deformed plate is locally shaped like a "cylinder" or not. For the derivation we investigate the oscillatory behavior of sequences of second f…
Well-posedness of a free boundary problem for electrostatic microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) is investigated when nonlinear bending effects are taken into account. The model describes the evolution of the deflection of an electrically conductive elastic membrane suspended above a fixed ground plate together with the electrostatic potential in the free domain between the membrane and the fixed ground plate. The electrostatic potential is harmonic in that domain and its values are held fixed along the membrane and the ground plate. The equation for the membrane deflection is a parabolic qua…
Here, we address a dimension-reduction problem in the context of nonlinear elasticity where the applied external surface forces induce bending-torsion moments. The underlying body is a multi-structure in $\mathbb{R}^3$ consisting of a thin tube-shaped domain placed upon a thin plate-shaped domain. The problem involves two small parameters, the radius of the cross-section of the tube-shaped domain and the thickness of the plate-shaped domain. We characterize the different limit models, including the limit junction condition, in the membrane-string regime according to the ratio between these two…
The present paper treats the problem of finding the asymptotic bounds for the globally optimal locations of orthogonal stiffeners minimizing the compliance of a rectangular plate in elastostatic bending. The essence of the paper is the utilization of a method of analysis of orthogonally stiffened rectangular plates first presented by Mazurkiewicz in 1962, and obtained herein in a closed form for several special cases in the approximation of stiffeners having zero torsional rigidity. Asymptotic expansions of the expressions for the deflection field of a stiffened plate are used to derive limit-…
This article is concerned with bending plate theory for thermoelastic diffusion materials under Green-Naghdi theory. First, we present the basic equations which characterize the bending of thin thermoelastic diffusion plates for type II and III models. The theory allows for the effect of transverse shear deformation without any shear correction factor, and permits the propagation of waves at a finite speed without energy dissipation for type II model and with energy dissipation for type III model. By the semigroup theory of linear operators, we prove the well-posedness of the both models and t…
In this paper, we study an elastic bilayer plate composed of a nematic liquid crystal elastomer in the top layer and a nonlinearly elastic material in the bottom layer. While the bottom layer is assumed to be stress-free in the flat reference configuration, the top layer features an eigenstrain that depends on the local liquid crystal orientation. As a consequence, the plate shows non-flat deformations in equilibrium with a geometry that non-trivially depends on the relative thickness and shape of the plate, material parameters, boundary conditions for the deformation, and anchorings of the li…
We consider the two-dimensional Kirchhoff-Love plate equation in the context of elasticity modeling the stresses and deformations in thin plates subjected to forces and moments. We establish global recovery of the material parameters like bending stiffness, Poisson coefficient, Lamé parameters from the associated boundary Cauchy data of the equation.
This paper is devoted to describe the asymptotic behavior of a structure made by a thin plate and a thin rod in the framework of nonlinear elasticity. We scale the applied forces in such a way that the level of the total elastic energy leads to the Von-Kármán's equations (or the linear model for smaller forces) in the plate and to a one dimensional rod-model at the limit. The junction conditions include in particular the continuity of the bending in the plate and the stretching in the rod at the junction.
This paper is the second part of a work devoted to the modelling of thin elastic plates with small, periodically distributed piezoelectric inclusions. We consider the equations of linear elasticity coupled with the electrostatic equation, with various kinds of electric boundary conditions. We derive the corresponding effective models when the thickness $a$ of the plate and the characteristic dimension $\varepsilon $ of the inclusions tend\ together to zero, in the two following situations: first when $a \simeq \varepsilon$, second when $a/\varepsilon$ tends to zero.
In this section, we consider the heat equation on a plate with thickness h > 0 being heated by a heat source on upper and lower faces of the plate. We obtain an asymptotic profile of the solution as the thickness h > 0 approaches to zero.
In the article the formulas for the modeling of conservative fields in piecewise infinite plate with a thin inclusion found. The accuracy of the found formulas is of order equal to the thickness of the outer layer. The problem for higher accuracy solved by means of asymptotic formulas.
In this paper, we prove that the inverse problems for 2D elasticity and for the thin plate with boundary data (finite or full measurements) are equivalent. Having proved this equivalence, we can solve inverse problems for the plate equation with boundary data by solving the corresponding inverse problems for 2D elasticity, and vice versa. For example, we can derive bounds on the volume fraction of the two-phase thin plate from the knowledge of one pair of boundary measurements using the known result for 2D elasticity \cite{ml}. Similarly, we give another approach to the size estimate problem f…
We construct strong solutions for a nonlinear wave equation for a thin vibrating plate described by nonlinear elastodynamics. For sufficiently small thickness we obtain existence of strong solutions for large times under appropriate scaling of the initial values such that the limit system as $h\to 0$ is either the nonlinear von Kármán plate equation or the linear fourth order Germain-Lagrange equation. In the case of the linear Germain-Lagrange equation we even obtain a convergence rate of the three-dimensional solution to the solution of the two-dimensional linear plate equation.
In this paper we deduce by Γ-convergence some partially and fully linearized quasistatic evolution models for thin plates, in the framework of finite plasticity. Denoting by ε the thickness of the plate, we study the case where the scaling factor of the elasto- plastic energy is of order ε^ (2α-2), with α>=3. We show that solutions to the three- dimensional quasistatic evolution problems converge, as the thickness of the plate tends to zero, to a quasistatic evolution associated to a suitable reduced model depending on α.
We illustrate, with a simple example of domain perturbation problem, how Linear Algebra can be applied to determine the behavior of a family of partial differential equations posed in a thin rectangular domain. (In portuguese)
The mechanical model of a thin plate with boundary control and observation is presented as a port-Hamiltonian system (pHs), both in vectorial and tensorial forms: the Kirchhoff-Love model of a plate is described by using a Stokes-Dirac structure and this represents a novelty with respect to the existing literature. This formulation is carried out both in vectorial and tensorial forms. Thanks to tensorial calculus, this model is found to mimic the interconnection structure of its one-dimensional counterpart, i.e. the Euler-Bernoulli beam. The Partitioned Finite Element Method (PFEM) is then ext…
In this paper we investigate the limit behavior of the solution to quasi-static Biot's equations in thin poroelastic plates as the thickness tends to zero. We choose Terzaghi's time corresponding to the plate thickness and obtain the strong convergence of the three-dimensional solid displacement, fluid pressure and total poroelastic stress to the solution of the new class of plate equations. In the new equations the in-plane stretching is described by the 2D Navier's linear elasticity equations, with elastic moduli depending on Gassmann's and Biot's coefficients. The bending equation is couple…
We discuss a 1D variational problem modeling an elastic sheet on water, lifted at one end. Its terms include the membrane and bending energy of the sheet as well as terms due to gravity and surface tension. By studying a suitable Gamma-limit, we identify a parameter regime in which the sheet is inextensible, and the bending energy and weight of the sheet are negligible. In this regime, the problem simplifies to one with a simple and explicit solution.
The purpose of this note is to establish two continuum theories for the bending and torsion of inextensible rods as $Γ$-limits of 3D atomistic models. In our derivation we study simultaneous limits of vanishing rod thickness $h$ and interatomic distance $\varepsilon$. First, we set up a novel theory for ultrathin rods composed of finitely many atomic fibres ($\varepsilon\sim h$), which incorporates surface energy and new discrete terms in the limiting functional. This can be thought of as a contribution to the mechanical modelling of nanowires. Second, we treat the case where $\varepsilon\ll h…
We consider a two phase elastic thin film with soft inclusions subject to bending dominated deformations. The soft (void) phase may comprise asymptotically small droplets within the elastic matrix. We perform a dimension reduction analysis and obtain a novel `Blake-Zisserman-Kirchhoff' model that combines Kirchhoff's classical plate theory with Blake-Zisserman type surface energy contributions at cracks, folds and the boundary of voids.
We study the effective elastic behavior of incompatibly prestrained plates, where the prestrain is independent of thickness as well as uniform through the thickness. We model such plates as three-dimensional elastic bodies with a prescribed pointwise stress-free state characterized by a Riemannian metric $G$ with the above properties, and seek the limiting behavior as the thickness goes to zero. Our results extand the prior analysis in M. Lewicka, M. R. Pakzad ESAIM Control Optim. Calc. Var. 17 (2011), no. 4. We first establish that the $Γ$-limit is a Kirchhoff type bending. Further, we show t…
We derive asymptotic formulas for the solutions of the mixed boundary value problem for the Poisson equation on the union of a thin cylindrical plate and several thin cylindrical rods. One of the ends of each rod is set into a hole in the plate and the other one is supplied with the Dirichlet condition. The Neumann conditions are imposed on the whole remaining part of the boundary. Elements of the junction are assumed to have contrasting properties so that the small parameter, i.e. the relative thickness, appears in the differential equation, too, while the asymptotic structures crucially depe…
We analyse a system of partial differential equations describing the behaviour of an elastic plate with periodic moduli in the two planar directions, in the asymptotic regime when the period and the plate thickness are of the same order of smallness. Assuming that the displacement gradients of the points of the plate are small enough for the equations of linearised elasticity to be a suitable approximation of the material response, such as the case in e.g. acoustic wave propagation, we derive a class of "hybrid", homogenisation dimension-reduction, norm-resolvent estimates for the plate, under…
