This paper presents computer simulations of Cu$_x$Zr$_{100-x}$ $(x=36,50,64)$ in the liquid and glass phases. The simulations are based on the effective-medium theory (EMT) potentials. We find good invariance of both structure and dynamics in reduced units along the isomorphs of the systems. The state points studied involve a density variation of almost a factor of two and temperatures going from 1500 K to above 4000 K for the liquids and from 500 K to above 1500 K for the glasses. For comparison, results are presented also for similar temperature variations along isochores, showing little invariance. In general for a binary system the phase diagram has three axes: composition, temperature and pressure (or density). When isomorphs are present, there are effectively only two axes, and for a fixed composition just one. We conclude that the liquid and glass parts of the thermodynamic phase diagram of this metallic glass former at a fixed composition is effectively one-dimensional in the sense that many physical properties are invariant along the same curves, implying that in order to investigate the phase diagram, it is only necessary to go across these curves.
We show that a deep-learning neural network potential (DP) based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations can well describe Cu-Zr materials, an example of a binary alloy system that can coexist in several ordered intermetallics and as an amorphous phase. The complex phase diagram for Cu-Zr makes it a challenging system for traditional atomistic force-fields that fail to describe well the different properties and phases. Instead, we show that a DP approach using a large database with ~300k configurations can render results generally on par with DFT. The training set includes configuratio…
Using molecular dynamics simulation, we study the plastic zone created during nanoindentation of a large CuZr glass system. The plastic zone consists of a core region, in which virtually every atom undergoes plastic rearrangement, and a tail, where the density distribution of the plastically active atoms decays to zero. Compared to crystalline substrates, the plastic zone in metallic glasses is significantly smaller than in crystals. The so-called plastic-zone size factor, which relates the radius of the plastic zone to the contact radius of the indenter with the substrate, assumes values arou…
Planar flow casting (PFC) is a method that can be used to make thin, long, and wide metallic alloy foils by extruding molten liquid through a thin and wide nozzle and immediately quenching on a moving roller. The quenching rates are high enough that amorphous metallic glasses may be formed which have many desirable properties for a wide variety of applications. This paper reviews how PFC processes were developed, examines the typical operability range of PFC, and reviews the defects that commonly form. The geometrical similarities between PFC and slot coating process are apparent, and this pap…
We combine hydrodynamic and field theoretic methods to develop a general theory of phonons as Goldstone bosons in crystals, glasses and liquids based on non-affine displacements and the consequent Goldstones phase relaxation. We relate the conservation, or lack thereof, of specific higher-form currents with properties of the underlying deformation field -- non-affinity -- which dictates how molecules move under an applied stress or deformation. In particular, the single-valuedness of the deformation field is associated with conservation of higher-form charges that count the number of topologic…

Temperature rise ($ΔT$) associated with shear-banding of metallic glasses is of great importance for their performance. However, experimental measurement of $ΔT$ is difficult due to temporal and spatial localization of shear bands and, as a result, our understanding of the mechanism of $ΔT$ is limited. Here, based on molecular dynamics simulations we observe a spectrum of $ΔT$, which depends on both sample size and strain rate, in the shear bands of CuZr metallic glass under tension. More importantly, we find that the maximum sliding velocity of the shear bands correlates linearly with the cor…

We control the anisotropic molecular packing of vapor-deposited glasses of ABH113, a deuterated anthracene derivative with promise for future OLED materials, by changing the deposition rate and substrate temperature at which they are prepared. We find that, at substrate temperatures from 0.65Tg to 0.92Tg, deposition rate significantly modifies the orientational order in the vapor-deposited glasses as characterized by X-ray scattering and birefringence. Both measures of anisotropic order can be described by a single deposition rate-substrate temperature superposition (RTS). This supports the ap…
Confined glasses and their anomalous interfacial rheology raise important questions in fundamental research and numerous practical applications. In this Letter, we study the influence of interfacial air nanobubbles on the free surface of ultrathin high-molecular-weight glassy polystyrene films immersed in water, in ambient conditions. In particular, we reveal the counterintuitive fact that a soft nanobubble is able to deform the surface of a rigid glass, forming a nanocrater with a depth that increases with time. By combining in-situ atomic-force-microscopy measurements and a modified lubricat…
On the role of Sm in solidification of Al-Sm metallic glasses
The similarity in atomic structure between liquids and glasses has stimulated a long-standing hypothesis that the nature of glasses may be more fluid like, rather than an apparent solid. In principle, the nature of glasses can be characterized by measuring the dynamic response of rheology to shear strain rate in the glass state. However, limited by the brittleness of glasses and current experimental techniques, the dynamic behaviors of glasses were mainly assessed in the supercooled liquid state or in the glass state within a narrow rate range. Therefore, the nature of glasses has not been wel…
Crystallization of metallic glass as a grain-boundary nucleated process: experimental and theoretical evidence for the grain structure of metallic glasses
The glass transition temperature (Tg) is the temperature, after which the supercooled liquid undergoes a dynamical arrest. Usually, the glass network modifiers (e.g., Na2O) affect the behavior of Tg. However, in aluminosilicate glasses, the effect of different modifiers on Tg is still unclear and show an anomalous behavior. Here, based on molecular dynamics simulations, we show that the glass transition temperature decreases with increasing charge balancing cations field strength (FS) in the aluminosilicate glasses, which is an anomalous behavior as compared to other oxide glasses. The results…
We have studied the liquid-like response of the surface of vapour-deposited glassy films of polystyrene to the introduction of gold nanoparticles on the surface. The build-up of polymer material was measured as a function of time and temperature for both as-deposited films, as well as films that have been rejuvenated to become normal glasses cooled from the equilibrium liquid. The temporal evolution of the surface profile is well described by the characteristic power law of capillary-driven surface flows. In all cases, the surface evolution of the as-deposited films and the rejuvenated films a…
In this paper we compare the composition fluctuations and interaction potentials of a good metallic glass former, Cu$_{50}$Zr$_{50}$, and a poor glass former, Ni$_{50}$Al$_{50}$. The Bhatia-Thornton correlations functions are calculated. Inspired by the observation of chemical ordering at the NiAl surface, we derive a new property, R$_{cn}$( q ), corresponding to linear susceptibility of concentration to a perturbation in density. We present a direct comparison of the potentials for the two model alloys, using a 2nd order density expansion, establish that the one body energy plays a crucial ro…

Exploring structural order in disordered systems including liquids and glasses is an intriguing but challenging issue in condensed matter physics. Here we construct a new parameter based on the angular distribution function of particles and show that this new orientational order has significantly higher correlation with dynamic heterogeneity compared to a translational parameter based on the radial distribution functions in colloidal glasses. The gradual development of orientational and translational order in supercooled liquids shows that the higher correlation between orientational order and…
The evolution of porous structure and mechanical properties of binary glasses under tensile loading were examined using molecular dynamics simulations. We consider vitreous systems obtained in the process of phase separation after a rapid isochoric quench of a glass-forming liquid to a temperature below the glass transition. The porous structure in undeformed samples varies from a connected porous network to a random distribution of isolated pores upon increasing average glass density. We find that at small strain, the elastic modulus follows a power-law dependence on the average glass density…
Borosilicate glasses are traditionally challenging to model using atomic scale simulations due to the composition and thermal history dependence of the coordination state of B atoms. Here, we report a new empirical interatomic potential that shows a good transferability over a wide range of borosilicate glasses--ranging from pure silicate to pure borate end members--while relying on a simple formulation and a constant set of energy parameters. In particular, we show that our new potential accurately predicts the compositional dependence of the average coordination number of boron atoms, glass …
The concept of vibrational density of states in glasses has been mirrored in liquids by the instantaneous-normal-mode spectrum. While in glasses instantaneous configurations correspond to minima of the potential-energy hypersurface and all eigenvalues of the associated Hessian matrix are therefore positive, in liquids this is no longer true, and modes corresponding to both positive and negative eigenvalues exist. The instantaneous-normal-mode spectrum has been numerically investigated in the past, and it has been demonstrated to bring important information on the liquid dynamics. A systematic …
We adapt and apply a recently developed optimization scheme used to obtain effective potentials for aluminosilicate glasses to include the network former boron into the interaction parameter set. As input data for the optimization, we used the radial distribution functions of the liquid at high temperature generated by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, and density, coordination and elastic modulus of glass at room temperature from experiments. The new interaction potentials are shown to reproduce reliably the structure, coordination and mechanical properties over a wide range of compos…
We propose a new scheme to parameterize effective potentials that can be used to simulate atomic systems such as oxide glasses. As input data for the optimization, we use the radial distribution functions of the liquid and the vibrational density of state of the glass, both obtained from ab-initio simulations, as well as experimental data on the pressure dependence of the density of the glass. For the case of silica, we find that this new scheme facilitates finding pair potentials that are significantly more accurate than previous ones even if the functional form is the same, thus demonstratin…
Chalcogenide glasses possess several outstanding properties that enable several ground breaking applications, such as optical discs, infrared cameras, and thermal imaging systems. Despite the ubiquitous usage of these glasses, the composition property relationships in these materials remain poorly understood. Here, we use a large experimental dataset comprising approx 24000 glass compositions made of 51 distinct elements from the periodic table to develop machine learning models for predicting 12 properties, namely, annealing point, bulk modulus, density, Vickers hardness, Littleton point, You…
We apply a recently developed optimization scheme to obtain effective potentials for alkali and alkaline-earth aluminosilicate glasses that contains lithium, sodium, potassium, or calcium as modifiers. As input data for the optimization, we used the radial distribution functions of the liquid at high temperature generated by means of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and density and elastic modulus of glass at room temperature from experiments. The new interaction potentials are able to reproduce reliably the structure and various mechanical and vibrational properties over a wide range …
Crystallization kinetics has features that are universal and independent of the type of crystallized system. The possibility of using scaling relations to describe the temperature dependences of the surface self-diffusion coefficient $D_s$, which is one of the key characteristics of crystallization kinetics, has been demonstrated in application to various crystallized molecular glasses. It has been shown that the surface self-diffusion coefficient $D_s$ as a function of the dimensionless temperature is reproduced by a power law and is universally scaled for all considered systems. The analysis…
We propose a novel model for a glass-forming liquid which allows to switch in a continuous manner from a standard three-dimensional liquid to a fully connected mean-field model. This is achieved by introducing k additional particle-particle interactions which thus augments the effective number of neighbors of each particle. Our computer simulations of this system show that the structure of the liquid does not change with the introduction of these pseudo neighbours and by means of analytical calculations, we determine the structural properties related to these additional neighbors. We show that…
Gaussian process regression (GPR) is a useful technique to predict composition--property relationships in glasses as the method inherently provides the standard deviation of the predictions. However, the technique remains restricted to small datasets due to the substantial computational cost associated with it. Here, using a scalable GPR algorithm, namely, kernel interpolation for scalable structured Gaussian processes (KISS-GP) along with massively scalable GP (MSGP), we develop composition--property models for inorganic glasses based on a large dataset with more than 100,000 glass compositio…
