In this paper, we propose a new analytical model for grounded chiral slab waveguides covered with graphene sheets. The general waveguide is constructed of a graphene sheet sandwiched between two different chiral layers (as substrate and cover layers). The substrate is supposed to be a perfect electromagnetic conductor (PEMC), which is able to easily convert to a perfect electric conductor (PEC) or a perfect magnetic conductor (PMC). A novel matrix representation is obtained for the general structure to find its dispersion relation and other propagating parameters. To show the richness of the proposed waveguide, two new structures have been introduced and investigated. It has been shown that the modal properties of these exemplary structures are tunable by changing the chemical potential of the graphene and the chirality. The proposed general structure and its analytical model can be utilized for designing tunable plasmonic devices in THz frequencies.
Dye-doped hybrid silicate/titanium nanofilms on the glass substrate in the structure of asymmetrical waveguides were studied as the laser system. The spatial and spectral features of laser oscillation of genuine and hollow waveguides were determined. Their lasing thresholds of a two-order difference of pumping power were identified. The calculated cutoff thickness for waveguides of 100 nm did not exceed their actual thickness of 300nm. The overall pattern of stimulated emission included two concurrent processes: one-mode waveguide lasing and the lateral beam emission of small divergence emanat…
Integrated thin-film lithium niobate platform has recently emerged as a promising candidate for next-generation, high-efficiency wavelength conversion systems that allow dense packaging and mass-production. Here we demonstrate efficient, phase-matched second harmonic generation in lithographically-defined thin-film lithium niobate waveguides with sub-micron dimensions. Both modal phase matching in fixed-width waveguides and quasi-phase matching in periodically grooved waveguides are theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Our low-loss (~ 3.0 dB/cm) nanowaveguides possess normal…
We present a model of soliton propagation in waveguides with quadratic nonlinearity. Criteria for solitons to exist in such waveguides are developed and two example nano-waveguide structures are simulated as proof of concept. Interactions between quadratic solitons and dispersive waves are analysed giving predictions closely matching soliton propagation simulations. The example structures are found to support five different regimes of soliton and quasi-soliton existence. Pulse propagation in these example waveguides has been simulated confirming the possibility of soliton generation at experim…
Tuning the near-field using all-dielectric nano-antennae offers a promising approach for trapping atoms, which could enable strong single-atom/photon coupling. Here we report the simulation results of an optical trapping concept, in which a silicon nano-antenna produces a trapping potential for atoms in a chip-scale configuration. Using counter-propagating incident fields, bichromatically detuned from the atomic cesium D-lines, we numerically investigate the dependence of the optical potential on the nano-antenna geometry. We tailor the near-field potential landscape by tuning the evanescent f…
Photonic waveguides with triangular cross section are being investigated for material systems such as diamond, glasses and gallium nitride, which lack easy options to create conventional rectangular nanophotonic waveguides. The design rules for optical elements in these triangular waveguides, such as couplers and gratings, are not well established. Here we present simulations of elements designed to couple light into, and out of, triangular waveguides from the vertical direction, which can be implemented with current angled-etch fabrication technology. The devices demonstrate coupling efficien…
Tapered and dispersion managed (DM) silicon nanophotonic waveguides are investigated for the generation of optimal ultra broadband supercontinuum (SC). DM waveguides are structures showing a longitudinally dependent group velocity dispersion that results from the variation of the waveguide width with the propagation distance. For the generation of optimal SC, a genetic algorithm has been used to find the best dispersion map. This allows for the generation of highly coherent supercontinuums that span over 1.14 octaves from 1300 nm to 2860 nm and 1.25 octaves from 1200 nm to 2870 nm at -20 dB le…
We demonstrate enhanced four-wave mixing (FWM) in doped silica waveguides integrated with graphene oxide (GO) layers. Owing to strong mode overlap between the integrated waveguides and GO films that have a high Kerr nonlinearity and low loss, the FWM efficiency of the hybrid integrated waveguides is significantly improved. We perform FWM measurements for different pump powers, wavelength detuning, GO coating lengths, and number of GO layers. Our experimental results show good agreement with theory, achieving up to ~9.5-dB enhancement in the FWM conversion efficiency for a 1.5-cm-long waveguide…
Nanoscale amplification of non-linear processes in solid-state devices opens novel applications in nano-electronics, nano-medicine or high energy conversion for example. Coupling few nano-joules laser energy at a nanometer scale for strong field physics is demonstrated. We report enhancement of high harmonic generation in nano-structured semiconductors using nanoscale amplification of a mid-infrared laser in the sample rather than using large laser amplifier systems. Field amplification is achieved through light confinement in nano-structured semiconductor 3D waveguides. The high harmonic nano…
We designed, fabricated and tested gallium phosphide (GaP) nano-waveguides for second harmonic generation (SHG). We demonstrate SHG in the visible range around 655 nm using low power continuous-wave pump in the optical communication O-band. Our structures utilize modal phase matching, such that lower order eigenmodes of the pump are phase matched to higher order eigenmodes of the second harmonic. We observe phase matched SHG for different combinations of interacting modes by varying the widths of the waveguides and tuning the wavelength of the pump. The presented results contribute to the deve…
Carrier recombination dynamics in strip silicon nano-waveguides is analyzed through time-resolved pump-and-probe experiments, revealing a complex recombination dynamics at densities ranging from ${10^{14}}$ to ${10^{17}}\,$cm$^{-3}$. Our results show that the carrier lifetime varies as recombination evolves, with faster decay rates at the initial stages (with lifetime of ${\sim 800}\,$ps), and much slower lifetimes at later stages (up to ${\sim 300}\,$ns). We also observe experimentally the effect of trapping, manifesting as a decay curve highly dependent on the initial carrier density. We fur…
This thesis covers different subjects of nonlinear and quantum optics, studied in systems with scales smaller or com-parable to the wavelength of interest. The manuscript is divided into two parts. The first part of the manuscript dealswith several applications of optical nanofibers as a platform for light-matter interaction. In particular we will explore: thecoupling between a dipole placed on the surface of the nanofiber; the coupling between two parallel nanofibers; as well asthe mechanical properties of an optical nanofiber. In the second part of the manuscript, we will focus on solving tw…
Chemical synthesized silver nanowires have been proved to be the efficient architecture for Plasmonic waveguides, but the high propagation loss prevents their widely applications. Here, we demonstrate that the propagation distance of the plasmons along the Ag NW can be extended if the Ag NW was placed on a dielectric multilayer substrate containing a photonic band gap, but not placed on a commonly used glass substrate. The propagation distance at 630 nm wavelength can reach 16 um even that the Ag NW is as thin as 90 nm in diameter. Experimental and simulation results further show that the pola…
We demonstrate that unidirectional and backscattering immune propagation of terahertz optical waves can be achieved in a topological valley-Hall waveguide made of graphene nanohole plasmonic crystals. In order to gain deeper physical insights into these phenomena, the band diagram of graphene nanohole plamsonic crystals has been investigated and optimized. We found that a graphene plasmonic crystal with nanohole arrays belonging to the $C_{6v}$ symmetry group possesses gapless Dirac cones, which can be gapped out by introducing extra nanoholes such that the symmetry point group of the system i…
We identify a broad class of phonon modes with persistent vortex fluxes at arbitrarily slow propagating velocities in periodic nano-waveguides. Such phonon vortices are associated with the split band-edges in dispersion dependencies, which can be engineered by waveguide design. Modulations introduced in such waveguides can support a pair of defect cavity phonon modes with an arbitrarily small frequency splitting. These features can find applications for sensing and nano-manipulation.
Recently, much research concerning the combination of nano-scale waveguides with nano-crystals and other nano-particles has been reported, because of possible applications in the field of quantum information and communication. The most useful and convenient method to verify the nature of such systems is optical detection. However, due to the diffraction limit, optical identification of characteristics such as particle type, particle position, etc is difficult or impossible. However, if such particles are placed on a waveguide, the coupling of scattered light to the waveguide guided modes can r…
We compare phase matching for four-wave mixing using one, two, three, and four waveguide modes. For the comparison, we use numerical optimizations and an estimate of the generated idler power. We present results for few-mode fibers and nano-rib waveguides and show that for both waveguide types, four-wave mixing bandwidths and idler powers are best for one- and two-mode operation and that four-mode four-wave mixing is not feasible at all. Some nano-rib waveguides support three-mode four-wave mixing, albeit with much reduced bandwidth and reduced idler power.

Plasmonic, as a rapidly growing research field, provides new pathways to guide and modulate highly confined light in the microwave to the optical range of frequencies. We demonstrate a plasmonic slot waveguide, at the nanometer scale, based on high transition temperature superconductor BSCCO, to facilitates the manifestation of the chip-scale millimeter waves to terahertz integrated circuitry operating at cryogenic temperatures. We investigate the effect of geometrical parameters on the modal characteristics of the BSCCO plasmonic slot waveguide between 100 GHz and 500 GHz. In addition, we inv…
Spin-dependent, directional light-matter interactions form the basis of chiral quantum networks. In the solid state, quantum emitters commonly possess circularly polarised optical transitions with spin-dependent handedness. We demonstrate numerically that spin-dependent chiral coupling can be realised by embedding such an emitter in a waveguide-coupled nanocavity, which supports two near-degenerate, orthogonally-polarised cavity modes. The chiral behaviour arises due to direction-dependent interference between the cavity modes upon coupling to two single-mode output waveguides. Notably, an exp…
By using the real-space method, switching of a single plasmon interacting with a hybrid nanosystem composed of a semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) and a metallic nanoparticle (MNP) coupled to one-dimensional surface plasmonic waveguide is investigated theoretically. We discussed that the dipole coupling between an exciton and a localized surface plasmon results in the formation of a hybrid exciton and the transmission and reflection of the propagating single plasmon could be controlled by changing the interparticle distance between the SQD and the MNP and the size of the nanoparticles. The contr…
Recently, there is growing interest in integrating alkali vapors with nanoscale photonic structures, such as nano-waveguides, resonators and nanoantennas. Nanoscale confinement of electromagnetic fields may introduce a longitudinal electric field component, giving rise to circularly polarized modes which are essential for diverse applications involving vapor and light, such as chirality and non-reciprocity. Hereby, we have designed, fabricated and characterized a miniaturized vapor cell that is integrated with optical waveguides that are designed to generate a peculiar circular-like polarizati…

The capability to embed self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) at predefined positions in nanophotonic structures is key to the development of complex quantum photonic architectures. Here, we demonstrate that QDs can be deterministically positioned in nanophotonic waveguides by pre-locating QDs relative to a global reference frame using micro-photoluminescence ($μ$PL) spectroscopy. After nanofabrication, $μ$PL images reveal misalignments between the central axis of the waveguide and the embedded QD of only $(9\pm46$) nm and $(1\pm33$) nm, for QDs embedded in undoped and doped membranes, respectivel…
Local control of the generation and interaction of indistinguishable single photons is a key requirement for photonic quantum networks. Waveguide-based architectures, in which embedded quantum emitters act as both highly coherent single photon sources and as nonlinear elements to mediate photon-photon interactions, offer a scalable route to such networks. However, local electrical control of a quantum optical nonlinearity has yet to be demonstrated in a waveguide geometry. Here, we demonstrate local electrical tuning and switching of single photon generation and nonlinear interaction by embedd…
Interfacing solid-state emitters with photonic structures is a key strategy for developing highly efficient photonic quantum technologies. Such structures are often organised into two distinct categories: nanocavities and waveguides. However, any realistic nanocavity structure simultaneously has characteristics of both a cavity and waveguide, which is particularly pronounced when the cavity is constructed using low-reflectivity mirrors in a waveguide structure with good transverse light confinement. In this regime, standard cavity quantum optics theory breaks down, as the waveguide character o…
Integrated optical devices able to control light matter interactions on the nanoscale have attracted the attention of the scientific community in recent years. However, most of these devices are based on silicon waveguides, limiting their use for telecommunication wavelengths. In this contribution, we propose an integrated device that operates with light in the visible spectrum. The proposed device is a hybrid structure consisting of a high-refractive-index layer placed on top of an ion-exchanged glass waveguide. We demonstrate that this hybrid structure serves as an efficient light coupler fo…
