We study the energy propagation in subwavelength waveguides and demonstrate that the mechanism of material gain, previously suggested for loss compensation, is also a powerful tool to manipulate dispersion and propagation characteristics of electromagnetic pulses at the nanoscale. We show theoretically that the group velocity in lossy nano-waveguides can be controlled from slow to superluminal values by the material gain and waveguide geometry and develop an analytical description of the relevant physics. We utilize the developed formalism to show that gain-assisted dispersion management can be used to control the transition between ``photonic-funnel'' and ``photonic-compressor'' regimes in tapered nano-waveguides. The phenomenon of strong modulation of group velocity in subwavelength structures can be realized in waveguides with different geometries, and is present for both volume and surface-modes.
We present a model of soliton propagation in waveguides with quadratic nonlinearity. Criteria for solitons to exist in such waveguides are developed and two example nano-waveguide structures are simulated as proof of concept. Interactions between quadratic solitons and dispersive waves are analysed giving predictions closely matching soliton propagation simulations. The example structures are found to support five different regimes of soliton and quasi-soliton existence. Pulse propagation in these example waveguides has been simulated confirming the possibility of soliton generation at experim…
Tuning the near-field using all-dielectric nano-antennae offers a promising approach for trapping atoms, which could enable strong single-atom/photon coupling. Here we report the simulation results of an optical trapping concept, in which a silicon nano-antenna produces a trapping potential for atoms in a chip-scale configuration. Using counter-propagating incident fields, bichromatically detuned from the atomic cesium D-lines, we numerically investigate the dependence of the optical potential on the nano-antenna geometry. We tailor the near-field potential landscape by tuning the evanescent f…
Photonic waveguides with triangular cross section are being investigated for material systems such as diamond, glasses and gallium nitride, which lack easy options to create conventional rectangular nanophotonic waveguides. The design rules for optical elements in these triangular waveguides, such as couplers and gratings, are not well established. Here we present simulations of elements designed to couple light into, and out of, triangular waveguides from the vertical direction, which can be implemented with current angled-etch fabrication technology. The devices demonstrate coupling efficien…
The strong interaction of light with metallic nanoparticles enables field confinement well below the diffraction limit. Plasmonic waveguides consisting of metal nanoparticle chains could be used for the propagation of energy or information on the nanoscale, but high losses have thus far impeded practical applications. Here we demonstrate that efficient waveguiding is possible through gold nanoparticle chains despite the high dissipative losses of gold. A DNA origami directed self-assembly of monocrystalline, spherical nanoparticles allows the interparticle spacing to be decreased to 2 nm or be…
We designed, fabricated and tested gallium phosphide (GaP) nano-waveguides for second harmonic generation (SHG). We demonstrate SHG in the visible range around 655 nm using low power continuous-wave pump in the optical communication O-band. Our structures utilize modal phase matching, such that lower order eigenmodes of the pump are phase matched to higher order eigenmodes of the second harmonic. We observe phase matched SHG for different combinations of interacting modes by varying the widths of the waveguides and tuning the wavelength of the pump. The presented results contribute to the deve…
This thesis covers different subjects of nonlinear and quantum optics, studied in systems with scales smaller or com-parable to the wavelength of interest. The manuscript is divided into two parts. The first part of the manuscript dealswith several applications of optical nanofibers as a platform for light-matter interaction. In particular we will explore: thecoupling between a dipole placed on the surface of the nanofiber; the coupling between two parallel nanofibers; as well asthe mechanical properties of an optical nanofiber. In the second part of the manuscript, we will focus on solving tw…

Recently, much research concerning the combination of nano-scale waveguides with nano-crystals and other nano-particles has been reported, because of possible applications in the field of quantum information and communication. The most useful and convenient method to verify the nature of such systems is optical detection. However, due to the diffraction limit, optical identification of characteristics such as particle type, particle position, etc is difficult or impossible. However, if such particles are placed on a waveguide, the coupling of scattered light to the waveguide guided modes can r…
Localized electromagnetic modes and negligible Ohmic losses dictate the growing interest in subwavelength all-dielectric nanoparticles. Although an exhaustive volume of study dealt with interaction of all-dielectric nanostructures with free-space electromagnetic fields, their performance as integrated photonics elements remains untackled. We present an experimental study of optical coupling between a resonant subwavelength silicon nanodisk and a non-resonant silicon waveguide, as probed by third harmonic generation microscopy. By placing the nanodisks at different distances from the waveguide,…
Plasmonic, as a rapidly growing research field, provides new pathways to guide and modulate highly confined light in the microwave to the optical range of frequencies. We demonstrate a plasmonic slot waveguide, at the nanometer scale, based on high transition temperature superconductor BSCCO, to facilitates the manifestation of the chip-scale millimeter waves to terahertz integrated circuitry operating at cryogenic temperatures. We investigate the effect of geometrical parameters on the modal characteristics of the BSCCO plasmonic slot waveguide between 100 GHz and 500 GHz. In addition, we inv…
We compare phase matching for four-wave mixing using one, two, three, and four waveguide modes. For the comparison, we use numerical optimizations and an estimate of the generated idler power. We present results for few-mode fibers and nano-rib waveguides and show that for both waveguide types, four-wave mixing bandwidths and idler powers are best for one- and two-mode operation and that four-mode four-wave mixing is not feasible at all. Some nano-rib waveguides support three-mode four-wave mixing, albeit with much reduced bandwidth and reduced idler power.
Strong amplification in integrated photonics is one of the most desired optical functionalities for computing, communications, sensing, and quantum information processing. Semiconductor gain and cubic nonlinearities, such as four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering, have been among the most studied amplification mechanisms on chip. Alternatively, material platforms with strong quadratic nonlinearities promise numerous advantages with respect to gain and bandwidth, among which nanophotonic lithium niobate is one of the most promising candidates. Here, we combine quasi-phas…
Local control of the generation and interaction of indistinguishable single photons is a key requirement for photonic quantum networks. Waveguide-based architectures, in which embedded quantum emitters act as both highly coherent single photon sources and as nonlinear elements to mediate photon-photon interactions, offer a scalable route to such networks. However, local electrical control of a quantum optical nonlinearity has yet to be demonstrated in a waveguide geometry. Here, we demonstrate local electrical tuning and switching of single photon generation and nonlinear interaction by embedd…
